  • Every landscape will contain foliage. Pastels are the simplest medium to portray it. In this demo, Master artist Johannes Vloothuis (Jo) will show you exactly how this should be done step by step. Jo has always recommended to thousands of artists that even if pastels are not your medium of choice, it serves as a perfect training vehicle to improve foliage in the other mediums. He has developed an infallible technique that will instantly improve your foliage. The demos will include: summer trees, autumn trees, winter frosted and bare trees, evergreens, and bushes. Come see what the hype of why thousands of artists won’t miss a free demo from Jo.
Johannes is an award winning artist and instructor for the Artists Network, publishers of several magazines. He is known for conveying the complexity of landscape painting into simple easy to understand terms.

Joe is the best teacher out there, none other are telling you anything, they demonstrate just a little and not telling you what and why they are doing. Joe is the most humble and generous artist and I learn so much from him every lesson. Thank you.

I’ve done oils and I’ve now switched to pastels. Originally I was a potter but during the Covid shutdown, I decided to teach myself to paint. I love pastels and I will say that I have learned more in during this demo than I have in the year of watching videos. You explain things amazingly clearly, thanks

There is a saying: “every master was once a beginner.” What distinguishes a master is they know when to break the rules. But to become a master you must first learn the rules, otherwise you won’t know what rules to break (or what rules to follow). What I love about Jo is he offers many rules of thumb, and his rules or tips on technique are practical and easy to follow. But it’s important to realize that although he makes it look easy, this is deceptive because pastels are not really that easy - they require a certain “touch” and an understanding of both drawing and painting principles because pastels are both a painting and drawing medium. What Jo is doing is providing guidelines to follow, but it takes practice to master the finer points, the intangible aspects that produce a masterpiece. But you must start somewhere. Jo provides a good starting point, a springboard from which to leap into your pastel journey, and I find his teaching style not only informative and entertaining, but also inspirational, and that is the hallmark of a great teacher.

I must say that I will be joining the classes . What a wonderful teacher Jo’s is .
I watched the the entire video of the snow bridge hoping to learn about applying pastel over watercolor. And… not much pastel used ,it was ok though . Maybe if I join the classes I see some watercolor with added pastel. Also loved your trees in which was very informative. Thank you Joe , Bravo to you Joe & June .

You can use watercolor paper for pastel. You can remove the sizing from the paper by taking a piece of 80 grit sandpaper and gently rub the surface, and or apply clear Gesso. Let it dry and you are good to go!

AND...WHERE CAN I FIND ALL OF HIS LESSONS? AKA.. LECTURES..Thank you so much Jo...and Cheryl...

I guess you can use a colour wheel. If the colour isn't from the same group. nor complimentary then it's more like a discordant one. Also you'd be able to judge for yourself if the discordant colour brought a "punch" to your painting.
