- I finally got my hands on the retail Microsoft Surface Duo phone. I picked it up yesterday from Best Buy and I wanted to share with you guys my 24 hours real-world impressions of using this device as a daily driver. I will demonstrate the surface duo camera capabilities, speaker capabilities when it comes to audio, I will also demo the gaming capabilities of the Microsoft Surface Duo phone. people play pubg mobile, Call of Duty mobile, Asphalt 9. is an attempt from Microsoft to bring the Windows Surface experience to a dual-screen folding phone. did they succeed or is this just another need a test that Microsoft is charging us $1,399 to try out. I ordered mine late Saturday Evening, I just stumbled upon a video and was like OMG. I should receive mine tomorrow (9/16) and I cannot concentrate on anything else. This video is the best I’ve seen with demonstrating the device without a ton of personal user likes/dislikes. This was a detailed demonstration of functionality and features. With any new, especially first Gen devices, there will be room for improvement, most of which can be fixed with software updates. If you consider buying this device, buy it with a purpose in mind and ask yourself if it will work for you. If you do that, your expectations will be reasonable, leaves less room for disappointment. I believe those YT’brs bashing the DUO were following other reviews or expecting a phone. This is a professional device, with a phone as an option IMO.
I’m keeping my iPhone for regular use the Duo will be my business phone so won’t need to take pictures or videos on it, as long as it works for meetings then great 👍🏽 won’t need it for Netflix or video games either. I just want to point out this phone isn’t for a gamer or photographer it’s mainly tailored for people like me, a business professional. Those who are like me see this as the perfect phone for business!

Hey just read your comment, cool I'm currently using a note 10 plus which is doable but as myself being a small business owner I am intrigued by this phone, anyhow if you do have it just wanted some feedback, I'm also use Office 365 so perhaps i may have to eventually transition over to this phone, my only fear is that they discontinue making these models (like past Microsoft phones). I love mine so far. Finally a UA-camr that isn't already against this device. Now my wife wants one. I just got her the Note 20 Ultra.

Really appreciate your review. A true influencer that understands what reviews are about. Disappointed about other creators using words like trash to describe the Duo and other devices without understanding the lengths companies and by extension the teams who worked years in most cases to develop and bring a product to the market. I am yet to get my unit to unbox and review on my channel and very much still exciting about the possibilities with the understanding about what Microsoft is trying to achieve especially by not saying that the Surface Duo is not a phone. Props again keep up the good work 👍🏽

I think you guys are right, but when you're asking 1500 bucks and don't offer simple things like a decent camera, wireless charging, nfc...i understand why they say trash. This device should be 800 bucks. Especially with last year's specs as well
For the asking price, there are a lot of compromises. It's good for those who like running 2 apps at once, but this can be achieved with the lg's using the dual screen case for half the cost. The duo is more of a refined concept of that. In the end, I hope folding devices stick around.

Thanks for the informative review. I've been thinking about the Duo a lot lately. I'm willing to give MS another try on this as I loved the Nokia 920 and 1520 when I had them. I have since moved back to Apple. Since this is the first gen of the Duo it will not be my daily driver. But I like everything you said and will move forward with getting the Duo. I'm also swayed by the Duo because I am using the Surface Laptop 3 for my media consumption. I did see and touch the Duo today at Best Buy today and was equally impressed by the hardware.
I am enjoying the Duo, some very annoying unexpected behaviors with apps vanishing as you transition postures and other funkiness that the Surface team should be able to iron out.

Really that was the best review I've seen so far all of the reviewers they were trying to say negative things about it but your's was pretty awesome / do you like the speakers on them? I mean is it loud and bassy? Cause bass is pretty important for me

I cannot wait for version 2. Similar size, with slimmer bezels for more screen real estate. I wouldn't compare this to a Samsung Fold until the Fold gets full S Pen support. This can be such a productivity monster it's not even funny. I really think that some consumers have bought into the hype that every device has to be able to do everything. We do need more diversity and should welcome specialists like the Duo.

For sure it's for a veey specific market, you have to like the form factor and need the features it brings for the price

I just got one used off Amazon for about 340. At that price I really like it. It doe have its bugiand issues. But I'm using it more as a companion to my s21 ultra

I think games and videos are secondary here. I can see this shining as a replacement for a desktop with two monitors. Teams on one screen, Outlook on the other. Or Outlook, reading a mail and the Excel attachment open on the other screen. Could you show Office apps open on the Duo next time? I think this is what it is for. However, how good will that experience be? Maybe it is easier to carry my laptop for a full experience?
if you're the type that thought using a phone for any real work is impossible and needs a laptop or tablet, this may sway you because this phone makes some things so simple that were so cumbersome to do on a phone. and the aspect ratio is amazing. if you were ever frustrated with 16:9 laptops or the tall skinny phones, you will love how much you can see on the surface screens. I own big phones (Galaxy S20, S10+, S9 and S8) and I always felt their keyboards were cramped in portrait mode. But the keyboard on the Surface Duo is so roomy in portrait mode. So roomy that I added the number row, the arrow cursors, etc. That said, Office on a phone is okay. Miles ahead of other phones but still, I need my Surface Pro 7 for real Office work. but it is an email beast. I've never liked doing emails on phones. Phones are great for texting but I view emails as work or more formal. The Surface Duo is the first time I felt like I could do proper emails. I even added my work signature to the Surface Duo! And you will have your moments where something totally unexpected happened that will pleasantly surprise you.

I've tried the fold and it's not for me. The fold's screen is easily scratched and blemished. I also prefer the duo's screen real estate for multitasking.
I ordered the Z Fold, due to be delivered 9/18. I saw this device and cancelled the Z Fold order. I wasn’t feeling good about the Z Fold purchase anyway and I am glad I was able to cancel before the it arrived.

That's really interesting - playing video, it seems Microsoft has managed to make the hinge active (unlike that abomination with the two different screens in a case)

Hi.. nice job... It seems to me that this is a second device to have, mainly due to the camera. With that in mind, is it possible that it will substitute an iPad for exemple? So we can have 2 instead of 3 devices.

Great review but for this price it should have the latest chip or at least have a less buggy android skin.... its one of the richest companies of the world so i would thought it was offer a smoother experience. I like how think the device is tho and hope that version 2 gets a decent camera. Also its weird that they dont split up the keyboard on hald so that you get a side on both screens.

I am expecting a second generation of Duo with much much less bezels all around and an improved UI experience. I wonder if Microsoft will come up with an improved version of the current Duo. They put so much time on Duo already. Just a little bit of tweak on Duo will go a long way....
Hello, is it possible to plug an external screen by using the usb c ?
Surface Duo is a mini portable touchscreen laptop with pen support that can also make/receive phone calls. If you want nonproductivity-related features such as multiple cameras, NFC, wireless charge, smaller bezels, etc. get a "traditional" smartphone...
It's a good device that could be great if it had proper software support. Would like to see more developers develop their apps around it's two screen design, but that's going to be an issue for Microsoft to get them to do that for one phone.
Can you run Nova Launcher on the Duo and make a video?
Too many complaints on the camera. Just keep the Duo in your pocket with the screens out when you expect to shoot photos. You can have the camera app already running. That makes it no different than any slab phone. Just pull the Duo out, aim, and shoot.

You would need a screen protector as it is only Gorilla Glass 5 and MS need to utilise AOD so that is a good choice. As you say, that is an option though I doubt many people will use it like that as that negates its looks.

just wondering TK, if you are sitting at a table opposite a friend, could you fold it so it stands up on table with a display facing each of you and play an identical you tube or video/movie on both screens?
And if you can split the audio via Bluetooth, that's game over!

Why reviewers keep calling the duo a phone? The primary purpose of this device is for productivity [ i think its more like a reincarnation of the PDA] than a smart phone. Its similar to smartphone but the target audience is enterprise as oppose to mass market; hence the reason why the camera the shines best for video chat. Good review only issue i have is that you refer to it as a phone

Good review. Would have like to see more focus on the dual screen... So it only takes decent photos, so let's see if there are any photo editing/painting app (e.g. Fantasia Painter) can make use of dual screen, surface pen etc
I see this failing. The amount of proprietry software changes needed for andriod to functionthe way it does over dual screens will take a good few generations in order to get them down. Unfortunatley at the same time these devices are going to cost considerably. Were talking about two large amoled screens here. I just dont see it selling enough at such a high price for generation are genration to be feasable to produce. Would love to be proved wrong. I think the concept is fantastic. Would love to be a generation 2 or 3 owner!

Playing games on this machine is possible but it is a sub-par experience especially if you compare to the brilliant Fold 2 gaming experience, night and day! MS and developers are yet to use the second display as a controller which might redeem it (like LG Velvet), but do not buy this if you game a lot as full screen it sucks.
Having a small device that opens to a bigger display for media consumption is a big selling point; both the Fold and Duo are a bit meh due to the aspect ratio and more so on the Duo as the hinge ruins a full-screen viewing.
Along with a mediocre camera, many of the features we use our phone/tablets for are not very good, media and games as well, so it really does limit the usefulness of the Duo. Certainly with these big compromises it will ruin many consumers user experience so the Duo is a very niche product. I can see it working in Enterprise but I would still argue that in a World Recession businesses could buy far cheaper and more useful devices than the Duo and I am struggling to make sense of this product at the high price. People will buy it like they did with the Windows Phone even though that was a major fail, so MS/Windows fans, those with money to spare, and the Instagram “cool” factor, but this does not look like it brings anything new to the game, in fact a lot less, apart from it folds!
