Dubs weren't better in the past. Every generation has a few good dubs and mostly bad ones. But back in the days that anime was first coming to the West, the vast majority of dubbed anime was total garbage. The reason it's easy to imagine things were better back then is that most people just remember the good ones- if a dub from the 90s was bad, no one talks about it, they just watch the subbed version. Furthermore, most kids getting into anime watched their first shows (often Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, or for a slightly younger generation, Pokemon or One Piece) dubbed, so they'd get used to the dubbed version first. To this day, I much prefer dubbed Dragon Ball just because I grew up with it. I'd probably feel the same about any show I watched dubbed as a kid. My point is, dubs were not better in the past. In fact, on average, they tend to be much better today. It's just that a truly iconic dub (such as Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, or PSG) only comes around every like five years, so it's easy to imagine the past has it better off.

Nah not that easy. You just can’t replicate the quality of the anime, especially with the kind of themes it had.
