      Two dudes shoving their emotions down to appear like they don't care. Jet immediately talking about business to say "I might let you back in if you have something good" even though he knows he's letting him in. Spike having too much pride to plead simply answers the question. And then Jet, having to reluctantly show some leeway and going back on his words of kicking him out, tells Spike he can come in.
      Truly excellent writing. Few shows have as many deep characters - especially in the short ~25 episodes we have with these guys. Cowboy Bebop is so genius only have about 5 episodes advancing the main plot, and the rest are goofy side stories allowing us to explore and connect to the cast. Death Note is really up there for me, but nothing can top Cowboy Bebop imo.

      I’ve watched the scene multiple times because of how impressed I am by it, and I read you’re comment...you’re so right. It really, really does.
      The theme of Bebop appears to be life after regret, loss, hardship, degradation, depravity; and what the day to day life of someone who’s trying to live with those things is like.
      I think that video “Cowboy Bebop: The meaning of nothing” is potentially the best exploration of the show’s themes. Some things seem like a stretch, but it’s very well made and analyzed. I recommend anyone who enjoys the show, watches that video.
      What a wonderful world we live in where we’ve made such beautiful art.

    All Gren wanted was to know why Vicious betrayed him. Vicious was the definition of a true soldier, but the concept of comrade or friendship was meaningless to him he hated the fact Gren looked up to him. Vicious saw nothing but Spike in Gren and the times when he once had a friend which made him resent Gren even more. Vicious lost all emotion when Julia chose Spike over him feeling betrayed by the two people he thought cared about him. Vicious merely betrayed Gren to project his hatred of Spike on him so he can make someone feel the pain of betrayal he’s felt.

      Gren had blue eyes. After he "selfishly" helped Faye and left her to confront his past, she resented him for it. Faye hated this so much because he's very, very similar to Spike. She hated the inevitable conclusions of where their paths would lead.
      And of course, the color blue also signifies Spike, himself. It's made clear by the final track of the show being titled "Blue," and appearing as Spike concludes facing his own past. Parallels and forshadowing together.
      Tl;dr: For Faye, the color blue makes her think of Spike and Gren... both of whom she was developing feelings for, and both of whom meet the same end because they cannot let go of their pasts.

    I ball my eyes out everytime I see Jupiter Jazz. Ren's story really hurt the most because he had a good spirit even after he was betrayed. He was just looking for peace & closure. I was hoping him & Faye would hit it off, sensed that she kind of liked him. They both seemed like lost souls. Cowboy Bebop was so ahead of its time.

      AnastaziaU When this was first released in the US there was so much fan theory that Gren was gay and in love with Vicious. Even then I disagreed; in his conversation with Faye there is a definite sexual tension. He wants her-but he also doesn’t want to show her his disfigurement. The grin he flashes when she finds out is just as much tormented as amused. And at the end when Ed is painting her toenails she says “Any color but blue.” Gren’s eyes are blue. There was something there, and maybe a bit more than they showed us.

    • @LonnieBhi
      @LonnieBhi 6 років тому +26

      Interesting, I never thought of Ren and Vicious as possible romantic partners, but it would totally make sense considering their history. Afterall, Ren did say women weren't his type. That leaves so many questions. Why would Vicious sell him out in the end? Other than for selfish motive maybe. Ren could be a cross lover. And yes, there was definitely a connection between him and Faye.

    • @dkupke
      @dkupke 6 років тому +33

      AnastaziaU No, I don’ believe Ren and Vicious were lovers. Ren was just naive and chose the wrong person to look up in Vicious. Vicious sold him out for self serving reasons, which would have still been heartbreaking to Ren because he had been betrayed by a person he admired. And when Ren tells Faye he doesn’t like women he is really just trying to prevent her from finding out about his disfigurement. Its after she throws him a somewhat lusty glance that he cuts the conversation off and goes to take a shower-again, trying to hide what the medical experiments did to him. IF there is any one possibility I would have loved to see explored, it would have been if either Vicious or Gren ever encountered Vincent as they all fought in the war.

    I owe so much to this show . Two days after finishing the finale , I checked into a psychiatric ward because I was about to kill myself . I have been a slave to my past tragedies and relationships for years . Always reminiscing, wondering what could have been . I realized that I was pushing myself into total insanity . Im not sure if I didnt have the perspective that I gained from this show … i dont know if I would have done the right thing . Was listening to this song on repeat as well as the song Call Me . Its like i was staring at myself over a puddle . Unable to process emotions properly or speak out to others . Cowboy Bebop saved my life

      They changed the character drastically but not sure why. I think that the direction of Vicious’ character and Julia’s on netflix must have made Garen original story too difficult to integrate. Still an odd choice as they made him like a random character ..maybe I was an hommage..I dunno man hahha

    I can't believe the many times I came across Cowboy Bebop I didn't even consider watching it until recently. I thought the show would be some kind of comedic western. I like anime that gets dark, deep thinking, and hit serious subjects. Boy was I wrong about this show and I'm glad I experienced. Cowboy Bebop is timeless for a show that aired in the late 90s. It ages very very well. If this show was to air this year, the story line would still be considered fresh and original compared to others. How many times you watch a show or movie and you can guess what happens next because of the predictability of the writing. Cowboy Bebop is a gem and I can see why this show was one of the first few big animes to be successful in the west. From the stunning visuals, chill soundtrack, great English voice work (I realized Steve Blum the voice of T.O.M, voiced Spike), to the little sayings after each episode. This will go down as one of my favorite animes, and I'm not even a huge anime guy. See you space cowboy.

    I feel like gren was pretty lonely for his entire life, with how he was "attracted" to the idea of comrades and just wanted to "be around" faye. This tells me that he just wanted to feel wanted by someone, so when he was betrayed by vicious, someone who he felt a genuine connection with, it really got to him and he just couldn't accept it. So he wanted to go and kill vicious so that he could finally be at peace with himself before finally going off to die on titan, the place where for once in his life, he actually had a genuine connection with someone.

    Sabrina, your star went out 2 years, 1 month, and a day ago, and it still only feels like it just happened, but.. through the times we had for all those years, I've never known a love like what we shared. You were one of a kind, a sweet song and a strange lilting tune all your own. Your memories, our memories, they always put me back on my feet to keep going. You fought your battle, and met the end of your story in peace. My journey continues as it did, for as long as I can, just like I know you'd have wanted, and when ours stars meet at last, somewhere out in space, that will be a magnificent day once again.

    This was in my opinion the best episode, and I just slowly nodded my head in acknowledgment. Gren was truly a tragic deuteragonist who just wanted to know why his best comrade betrayed him, ending up with years taken from him, and his body ruined from experimentation. When he realized all was truly lost ad near death, he could only recall the war on Titan side by side with his "comrade" as the best years of his life, and he requested to be sent back there, reminiscing as he slowly fades from life.
    Had such an effect on the main characters that they begin deep contemplation, Laughing Bull's wisdom, and that track just made it more complete. This is a masterpiece!

    Scene breakdown: Sax solo, Spike helping his lost bounty in an unexpected gesture of gratitude, making ammends with Jet with simple diaogue, Faye pondering about everything she experienced, and innocent Ed totally oblivious to recent events. Cue Laughing bull quoting again words that suddenly make much more sense and hit deep inside of you. The two-part episode comes to an end, the camera pans away into the stars, and the volume in crescendo is now much more evident, so much so that you need to lower the volume not to wake your folks up, for its late night 1999, and tomorrow is school day. Credits roll away as you listen to Space Lion for the first time, while fascinated by weird kanji. Something magical happened and you just know it. Years will go by, you will still carry that weight, but will every now and then come back to feel young again with this video. It's simply perfect. It's simply Cowboy Bebop.
