    Would love to see the creatures have day and night patterns. Like a bear creature will live in a cave at night and hunt for hunger and find water but not too frequent. Also birds that nest in trees. Spiders that climb. Creatures that live underground and can dig a hole under you. Looks awesome ❤

      Thats an awesome idea. Simulating eco systems, inter-creature behaviour etc is something I really find interesting and would fit the goal of having a living environment.

    This is super cool! I saw your post on the Godot reddit too, that grass looks so good.
    While controlling a monster, would be awesome to see the player character move around in the back, similar to the Pokemon trainer in smash bros, throwing out commands and such (maybe also trying to stay out of harms way in heated battle).

      Thanks :) For now there is no ai for the player character. But when this will change, the character will participate in the fight. That's currently the idea.

    Remember Overlord? You can control the Overlord by left analog and the minions by right analog. Just a thought.

    • @nathaniel1940

      Its a cool option. But if they want more precise Action combat it could be better to stick with controlling one character at a time. The minions in overload were pretty much a death ball you threw at your opponents so the simultaneous control made sense there.
      Switching between characters also lets each character have access to more buttons as they wouldn't need to share the same set of buttons.
      Really it all depends on how they want the game to feel

    How are you planning on financing your game dec? Will you apply for crowdfunding (e.g. Kickstarter etc.)? Or working in empty time until late hours after day job like me? (for your health try the plan A, with a good teaser trailer + this video + text pitch you should get a good funding to work full time)

I have a job as a game designer so I am good in that regard. :) I am financing this game with my free time basically and don't plan on changing that. I feel good and not exhausted or anything. If I have important stuff to do (like at the moment), I just slow down or take breaks.
      I hope though your project won't affect your health, no one is forcing you to keep working on it constantly.

    The switchable point of view for combat seems interesting and potentially fun. While you're paying one or the other character, you could give the computer controlled one some instruction to steer its behavior to assist you in a more desirable way. Something like "flank him", "take cover", "cease hostility".
    What would be the game world's setting time period? Are motorized boats appropriate or maybe sailing boats or rowing boats should be used instead?

    • @twntysvn9882
      @twntysvn9882  3 місяці тому

      Yeah that is the idea. :) Or even Co-Op playing with a friend while one controls the other character.
      My idea is to have a wheel menu when pressing middle mouse button, but I can imagine that this would be too tedious to do everytime. We will see.
      The time period would probably be without technology per se (for now). But I like how Final Fantasy X did it with their Machina and how it is justified. I can imagine some hints of (ancient) Steam Punk for technology etc.

    Hello! Love your art style! Can you give me a quick rundown of how you made the grass look like that? kinda watercolor-ish with large strokes of different colors
    Even better if you have/know a tutorial!

    • @twntysvn9882
      @twntysvn9882  2 місяці тому +3

      I don't have a tutorial yet for it, neither have I watched tutorials to achieve this, so I can't help you with that. But I will probably make one about the grass soon.
      But I can give you a quick info about it, maybe it is already you can look into.
      Basically the patched strokes are a seamless texture I did in Photoshop. Nothing fancy, just some natural looking green patches.
      This texture is then applied to the terrain aswell as the grass shader, while both use the same coordinates for its scaling.
      The terrain is just a mesh with heightmap displacement.
      The grass is a GPUParticles3D with a custom process material shader. This shader takes the heightmap information to render patches of grass meshes onto the terrain, in a 200x200 particles grid around the player / camera.
      The shading for those grass particles are the same shader settings for the terrain shader. That would be the same texture aswell as the same coordinates so that the colors at each position match.
      Another tip for the grass to blend is to make the normals of the grass mesh face up, so they are aligned with the normals of the underlying terrain.
      I hope this helps for now. :)

    • @twntysvn9882
      @twntysvn9882  2 місяці тому +1

      :) Thanks. It's self-written.
      It's basically just checking for mouse input on the terrain, converting the 3D position to 2D texture position of my terrain maps and apply texture changes to them depending on brush settings.
      I then just save those edited textures via the Save button and they replace the ones I use in my game scene.
      Changing height is painting the heightmap in greyscale and changing ground/textures is just painting the splatmap (rgb), both which are used in the resulting terrain shader.
      Very simple and nothing too fancy.

    Will the rats other other monsters evolve? Are they called monsters?

    • @twntysvn9882
      @twntysvn9882  2 місяці тому

      Currently no and I don't think they will. Maybe in a new way, but not like X evolves into Y.
      The reason is that the evolution, which mostly implies getting stronger per stats, would most likely change the playstyle of the monster (maybe because of bigger size, etc).
      I can imagine many people would not want to evolve their monster, because then they are for example not so agile anymore, don't have the ability that they used to have, etc.
      As for progression of a monster itself, they will level up or progress in a way, to get stronger, learn new abilities, etc.
      I am not sure yet whether I go for a level system or some other stat based system.
      They are currently called monsters and will probably get a more fitting name later. Currently, I don't want to pin down on wording and naming yet.

    • @twntysvn9882
      @twntysvn9882  2 місяці тому +1

      Yeah, focus is mainly on the creatures and their combat at first. My idea with the player was to have some entity that is "above" the team of creatures, acting as protagonist the player can control while not in battle, to interact with people, etc.
      It felt weird to run around as creatures only. The player being in combat was to give some variety to the combat and gameplay, but I can see it not being required. Still some testing is needed and maybe or maybe not, I'll scratch the player character altogether.

    Any advice for people starting now with godot? I'm trying to create something with a bunch of friends and i'm kinda new with godot. I am a full-stack developer with 8 years of experience on the "standard" world (not related to the gaming industry)

    • @twntysvn9882
      @twntysvn9882  2 місяці тому +2

      So, basically you should have a vision of what you want to do and don't to expect big results from the beginning but rather embrace the little steps you make towards your goal.
      Other than that, try to understand how Godot handles stuff (Rendering meshes, materials, shaders, collisions, scene instancing, the node system, etc.) This will be a lot at first, but you can start small and build upon it.
      Definitely check out the Godot documentation, there are nice beginner friendly examples and guides, you can also find some useful information regarding specific methods and properties of each of the built-in Godot classes.
      What helped me a lot was to learn 3D design and programming and Godot simultaneously (or 2D design if you prefer). This will keep a nice balance of logical thinking (scripting, coding, etc) and art (3D modeling, painting, etc). But this depends on your goal. :)
      Since you have a good experience in coding already, the coding part should be probably less intimidating and it just comes down to getting to know Godot and the design part.
      Good luck to you :)

Those maps are applied to the shader in World coordinates (and not the mesh UV), so when moving the clipmap (or moving the player and the clipmap follows the player) the terrain stays in place, but the mesh itself will move. You probably can find stuff about clipmap technique on UA-cam or anywhere really.
      My custom editor basically allows me to paint onto those splatmaps on-the-fly. This works by mapping the cursor position (when painting) to world-position and then to texture position of those maps and applying the color onto the texture.
      Before I used blender to create those maps. For heightmaps I just rendered out the plane from top-view and colored in the mesh depending on height (lowest points = black; highest point = white).
      There is no right or wrong way to do it. You can definitely do all of this without a clipmap, but it is a simple way of having different LODs for the terrain).
      The objects (trees, bushes, rocks, etc) are then hand-placed onto the terrain using the Godot Editor.
      If you're interested in learning more about this, you google for something along the lines of "splatmap technique", "heightmap vertex displacement", "clipmap technique".

      Oh yeah for sure :) Maps, world, etc are less of a priority at the moment. It was just some tests to path a way for me in the future, to see where this could lead to. Focus will be on the creatures and their fighting skills + their behaviour.

  • @shippous
    @shippous 2 місяці тому +1

    I'll be honest, fightning as the creatures seems a lot more fun than fightning as the player.
    I would remove player combat and 100% focus on creature combat!

      I wouldn't remove the player combat completely yet, but you're right, the focus is and should be on the creatures for now.

    a cool system to add this is using your pokemon style monsters in some way other than combat and/or transportation
    like in palworld, or in a rimworld mod that add pocket monsters your pals can do works in the base, water pals do firefighting, grass pals reap and sow the fields, eletric pals power machines
    if not for basebuilding them puzzles that would require you taking control of a legally distincti eletric rat to power a generator them swamp control to the player that press a switch and a gate opens

    Why do you guys repeatedly try to do this?
    Do you want the Nintendo ninjas to come after you?
    Why not just call it Pal-world style games, with maybe small Pokémon tags here and there?
    Anyway nice concept, the mechanics look fluid meshing into one another, terrain editor looks good did you guys develop it by yourself? Good luck with the Po***on style RPG game.

      @@twntysvn9882 awesome bro, it's always nice to see people making their own stuff, without relying on proprietary abstractions.
      And I'm not mad about the "poke" thing, it's just watching people making something new but gets taken down because "NINTENDO" makes me very sad.

    The work behind this is impressive and game looks great . For me the final result as a videogame is too much generic (open world in woods, water, common movement, same weapons as many other rpgs...). If I want to provide one feedback is make your gameplay different and attractive because that's the only thing that matters to the players.
    You are in the right path technically but honestly, you need to develop some hooked gameplay.
