Again the "Detroit Techno" debate. Usually the term is used as clickbait. Make your own decisions on how you use the label or whether you think that adding Detroit in before the term Techno makes the music better or inferior. For those who ask the question - what makes Detroit something different, something defined as not a part of the EDM mainstream? It's obvious that many parts of the city are abandoned and left in ruins, the toll of heavy industrial investment. Often dubbed "murder capitol" the city just does not have the marketable appeal of cool cities like New York or LA where the entertainment industries are polarized. The consumer industry has pretty much left the territory of Detroit alone... no Apple Stores, no Starbucks on every street corner, none of the typical commercial and retail that you would find pretty much everywhere else. This environment is great for an artist to develop. Basically, you have a blank canvass from which to make your own creative choices. From my viewpoint of 1990's Detroit I saw the creative people, be it music or architecture or art, as being very autonomous and independent of the mainstream. People didn't have the outside pressures or the need to conform to any pre-conceived ideas about what a party should be like or what tracks are in the Beatport top ten. Sites like UA-cam didn't exist because the internet was just an infant. Most people in Detroit didn't know what was going on outside the city, they just knew that what they had in front of them was insanely great and that it wasn't going to last forever. They partied hard knowing that eventually enterprising people would come in and try to cash in on that "Detroitness." That's the part that you can't capture musically or commercially or stylistically.

Why is detroit techno so much better than everything else that is techno
Detroit, baby
yo don't be getting into that detailed shit
I like berlin techno more. Its deeper and heavier
Because the originators will always be better than the copies.
