Alpine A110 - Quirky Cayman Rival (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • Alpine A110 looks like a Porsche Cayman, costs about the same, it has 50 less horsepower, but is over 200 kg lighter. Younger viewers may not remember the Alpine brand, as it was axed back in 1995. However those who do remember it, probably know the original A110, and its rally pedigree.
    Alpine history dates back to the 1950s, when a mechanic and racing driver Jean Redele started modifying Renault 4 CVs. Later he used Renault R8 platform, and which was the basis for the original A110 - a sports coupe, which did quite well in rallies in 1970s.
    Original Alpine A110 was powered by small, tuned engines, and the cars were light and nimble. Just like the modern version, which depending on the trim weighs around 1100 kg.

    Alpine did something wonderful. The original A110 was one of the most beautiful sports car I know. 1/2 the weight of the new one. But still, the new one keeps the philosophie going. Still reasonable light. The looks are again stunning, how they did that, I do not know. The front lights of course, it is beautiful again. You must buy it in the blue color of course. If I had the money...
    You let see the car in a very nice way, every vlog about this great car already told us how great it is on the road. Which you do also. And some irritating things can also be said. If I see some comments about a French car hater, that is stupid comment. Very nice vlog!

    Very disappointing review, no or very little words on the incomparable way this car is on the road - the (nice) images are not enough - due to being 350kg/720 pounds lighter than the Cayman - and ignoring largely the philosophy of what is an Alpine : it is unbelievably fun to drive, it is a driver's car not a car to show off in front of the Ritz. Low weight means better handling, cornering, braking, while preserving some comfort. Insisting on stupid details (put your keys in your pocket and a cup holder is meant for a cup, not a bottle), nobody else has found the radio command obstructing anything and it is ten times better than any command on the steering wheel by the way. And the driving position, although with minimum adjustment possibilities (fighting weight again), has earned very good reviews everywhere. If you were enthousiastic about the car, it does not transpire. I drove this Alpine - on the Le Mans track - so, yes, I know what I am saying. The original Alpine A110 achieved (with 75% standard Renault components) things that no Porsche ever did (like finishing 1,2,3 on the Monte-Carlo rally) with a lot less power and...money. And for those with always derogatory comments about Renault, ask yourself what make of engine has won more Formula One races than all other makes in the last 40 years. No, it's not Ferrari...and not Mercedes. Renault worldwide sales last year +10%, Renault-Nissan alliance (which Renault controls) : 1st car manufacturer in the world in 2017, VW-Porsche only second !

    • @MarekDrives

    • @praetor47

      what kind of bullshit sophistry is this?!
      "The original Alpine A110 achieved (with 75% standard Renault components) things that no Porsche ever did (like finishing 1,2,3 on the Monte-Carlo rally)". and Porsche achieved in other disciplines what no Alpine ever did, nor ever will. lol, until Group B and its quick demise, Porsche (and many others) didn't even really try. hell, a fucking Citroen C4 achieved more in rally than Alpine ever did. does that mean a Citroen C4 is a better drivers car than the A110? what kind of imbecilic argument is that?!
      "And for those with always derogatory comments about Renault, ask yourself what make of engine has won more Formula One races than all other makes in the last 40 years." again, so fucking what? unlike Ferrari and Mercedes, Renault's achievements in F1 don't translate AT ALL to their road cars. there's no goddamned relation. hell, their best driver's car before the new A110, the Clio V6 wasn't even developed by RS. jesus, man, how do you come up with this nonsense?
      "Renault worldwide sales last year +10%, Renault-Nissan alliance (which Renault controls) : 1st car manufacturer in the world in 2017, VW-Porsche only second !" where the hell did you pull this numbers from?! VW was the no1 in 2017 after YEARS of Toyota domination worldwide. the numbers are literally one quick google search away. are you really THAT inept even at using the internet.
      dear god, fanboys are the worst, but it seems Alpine is breeding a special kind of fanboy... is it an Alpine or French thing to be so obnoxiously wrong while pretending to be right?

    Satnav cannot use while driving is not due to the manufacturer’s choice. It’s for some countries regulations for road approved system.
    So check your statement please !
    If you’re looking for a GT with space inside and all full equipments then for sure don’t get an Alpine, or a Lotus. Get yourself a proper GT.

    • @GG-gk7jn
      @GG-gk7jn 6 років тому

      Marek Drives you don’t care but don’t imply that’s because of the manufacturer either. 😉 anyway these cars shouldn’t even have any satnav and all these things which will be obsolete very quickly. Just a simple and nice dash board
      If you want more then they should develop apps and link it to your tablet or your phone and that’s it. And it will always be updated

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 6 років тому

      As far as I am concerned, blocking sat nav input while driving makes it obsolete. I understand some markets may require it, but AFAIK Alpine isn't sold in any particularly "exotic" market.
      I like the car as a whole, and if I needed another impractical car, I'd sign up for Alpine, despite its shortcomings, which it is my duty as a reviewer to mention. Sat nav is crap, and I don't care who's responsible.

    I really like the looks. I absolutely dont understand why they didnt release this also with manual (yaris grmn only manual sold out before someone even saw it live, etc...). That is my nubmer one complaint.
    Second thing is, that it is seriously too close to cayman. When we heard first news about this, they were talking about 40-50k price range. I understand they dont have to sell it cheaper (yet), but it is still a bit disappointing for me. Also as someone stated, Megane RS 30k €, this 55k€?

      As far as GRMN is concerned, I don't think Toyota has a DCT (or any other quick automatic transmission) that it could adapt for the Yaris. So in this case it was also a matter of cost saving.
      Megane RS starts at 35-37 depending on the market.

    A) It is ugly B)It is not iconic, or widely recognizable brand(Renault had some AMAZING cars over the years, this is NOT it, anyone remember the SPORT SPIDER? AVANTIME? WIND? MEGANE RS? 5 RS?) C) it has no prestige D)Porsche beats it on every level E)It's not a luxury car, yet it is priced as one F) this car serves no purpose for Renault. With all it's failiures(mainly the stupid aftermarket radio and engine that is not powerful enough, and same goes for air con) Alfa 4c LOOKS distinctive. This thing looks no better than a current VW beetle. Um NO! For the same money you can get a BMW2 series which is a true drivers car, and is more practical, better looking, pretty much better in every way, and NOT TO MENTION THE CAYMAN??? Cayman can wipe the floor with this thing. Heck I'd even take the TT over this POS. i mean look at that cheap interior, those megane handles, that stupid rear end that makes it look like a soap on wheels...

      France invented car, petrol engine, twin cam, gear box, chassis, tyres, suspension, aviation, copter, powered submarine, camera, cinema, vaccine, english language coz 60% of english words are french ones like science art medecine justice culture savoir-faire techniques renaissance avant-garde or dentist dent means tooth in french, even mayday means help me in french so without France u won't be there ! by the way, you would be muslim without France coz French defeated Arabs in 732 and saved the whole Christian's Europe and now the killing point : when u claim u're anglophone did u realise that u tell it in french coz anglo means english in french ! France haters are just jealous and ashamed of their country

      Why?

      @@MarekDrives look how other guys did it (especially independent ones), they impressions are the same. Only you focused on cup holders and shit like that. Like somebody is going to drink while running thru mountain, this is not family car.

      @@dzonibravo7867I think you missed about 11 minutes 45 seconds of the review.

      @@MarekDrives you are reviewing this car like it is MPV or something, third of that 12 minutes are wasted. I'm telling you again, look at the other independent reviewers, especially older gentleman from England. Focus on the important things. And I'm not telling your job is all bad, you got left behind this time.

      @@dzonibravo7867 you started off with "Worst A110 review on youtube", which is quite a long way from "I'm not telling your job is all bad, you got left behind this time". But let's focus on the review itself. There's a part devoted to to history, a part devoted driving impressions, and a part devoted to general practicality, because this car will not magically appear on track days.
      Unless someone is willing to tow it on a trailer, Alpine will have to drive from wherever the owner lives to a cars & coffee meeting, to a track, or simply somewhere up in the mountains for the weekend. And I assure you, the owner will want to take with him/her more, than just a change of underwear.
      When I get into a car, I usually want to put some stuff away. That includes my mobile phone (because charging and sat nav - the one in Alpine is crap), house keys, a bottle of water or a cup of coffee, my sunglasses case (because I don't want them to get scratched, when I put them away because it got cloudy), and so on. And these things need to be secure ESPECIALLY in a sporty car, where there's a chance you're going to be taking a corner faster than normally. Because physics. And you don't want to end up with your smartphone under the brake pedal, because 1. you're not going to be able to brake, and 2. because you're going to break the phone.
      Porsche 718 seems to have you covered in that department. I'm not saying Porsche is the better car, because I think Alpine is better to drive, but even McLaren 570S has better storage inside the cockpit, than Alpine. McFuckingLaren!
