That may be the best Freddie Hubbard solo I've ever heard. When my daughter was an infant, she literally turned her head while feeding from a bottle when she heard this solo when this Blue Note special was on HBO. Later when Cassandra Wilson came on and started singing, she crapped her diaper. True Story!
i love jazz i think that jazz will never die as a musical style. but whats sad is that now most of our youth dousn't listen to this special kind of music. for all i know lil' wayne can be gone tomorrow but jazz stays forever. i think our youth needs to listen to more jazz and keep the fire burning.
We are SO lucky that this amazing moment in musical history was captured on audio and video. Absolutely mind blowing playing by everyone on the stage--and FREDDIE, dear lord! Hearing solos like this, it's no suprise why Hub went down in history as the Don of the modern jazz trumpet (to coin a phrase by my friend Maurice Brown). Hopefully Herbie and Ron will have many healthy and happy years ahead of them. RIP Freddie, Joe, and Tony--your many musical contributions will never be forgotten!
i agree. its good. this video nearly convinced me that freddie hubbard was the greatest trumpet ever. rest in peace freddie. we miss your spirit and you will never be forgotten.
«Jazz is Freedom. You think about that.» T. Monk Freddie Hubbard, one of the last Jazz legends, died one day after my 15th birthday. The day when he died I was watching an interview of him and this solo on «Blue Note - A Story of modern Jazz» and I thought: «This is an historical Solo for the Jazz». Rest in Peace Freddie.
Post bop jazz does not get any better than this. This is a performance to cherish. Everyone is on top of their game. The solo work, the ensemble work--all perfect!
Every jazz trumpeter, student or otherwise, owes him a debt, there was no one he didn't influence with his technique, his soul, his style, his sound.. there was no style of music he couldn't play, I am stunned tonight.
i've heard this song all over the place as far back as i can remember but i never knew who wrote it. man, we owe the jazz world our gratitude. to do less than honour these geniuses and their work is to do a disservice to american culture and humanity as a whole
Hubbard opens with a lyrical motif establishes the changes ... includes space ... then starts to burn (look at the note he delineates when he goes into the upper register) having grounded the solo he cooks and it is meaningful shit played with intensity and total commitment ... finally he gives primacy to a lyrical approach when he takes it out. A god of trumpet
I've watched this video on youtube almost every time im online. and every single time i say to myself that this is the best video i have ever witnessed by far. this is jazz and what every artist should strive for, though no one can do it like these guys
Whenever I listen to this song, I have to close my eyes, bob my head, and go on the journey to Canteloupe Island with Herbie and the crew. It ain't always the same ride, but its always a good one. Kudos to Hubbard and Henderson for the solo work! esp. Hubbard... good Lord, man! You blowin that thing!
Wait! Hold the phone! Damn I've been listening to this version now about umpteen times and now marveling at how that mutha**f**g Hancock switches from basic melodic structure of noting to chording and tempo shifting and all in perfect counterbalance to Hubbard's masterful swinging trumpet, pounding out a beautiful rendition that hits so many strides, I cannot keep up or find my stumbling listening skills twirling and almost giving up. HANCOCK just continues to demonstrate he is not human, a fallen angel sent to give us a glimpse of the Empyrean Realm, allowing us to swim in those sacred waters!!! Damn!!!! God Bless Him!!! God Bless Ron Hubbard, Tony Williams, Ron Carter, et al for moving into our world for a brief time to bring utter joy!
how can someone dislike this wonderful video? If Bach was alive, he would be probably jammin' with these legendary jazzers
I had the pleasure of playing with Herbie and composing a song for Freddie. These cats are legends indeed!
L'un des plus beaux morceaux de jazz que je connaisse; souvenirs souvenirs ... d'une lointaine jeunesse
This live version of Cantaloupe Island is the BEST!
Herbie plays the piano so funky.
The other musicians also are great.
What a man! Just hits the double C in the middle of the solo without breaking a sweat.. Freddie's got crazy skills..
Vegas Holum yes Freddie did have crazy skills ...but it cost him very dear 😪😪😪😪
The best performance of this classic piece I've ever found on UA-cam :)

Deep pocket, deep pockets, pocketatious, pocketized 'n fonkey out too... Freddie Tony and Joe, man... that energy will live forever!
Freddie Hubbard was one of the all-time greats.
What a frontline!
Hancock, Hubbard, Henderson, Carter and Williams.
Freddie!! Hub you were the man. Thanks wherever you are!

Superb sound.....fabulous muscians.....great jazz standard beautifully played....fantastic....
The 4 original musicians plus the great Joe Henderson on a serious classic! Don't get no better!
Cuando no sé que escuchar, recurro a esta maravilla. Y la vida se ve de otra manera.
Joe Henderson approaches his solo in an amazing number of ways, deconstructs the harmony, the modal approach. He was a giant.
tell curtis mayfield that ;) rest in peace mr hubbard.. thanks for the great music.
high caliber musicians , never again u'll see in this life , thank god for video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i agree. its good. this video nearly convinced me that freddie hubbard was the greatest trumpet ever. rest in peace freddie. we miss your spirit and you will never be forgotten.
Mr. Hancock, you're the Greatest!
I love the way Ron just eases into those notes. What a groove.

Every jazz trumpeter, student or otherwise, owes him a debt, there was no one he didn't influence with his technique, his soul, his style, his sound.. there was no style of music he couldn't play, I am stunned tonight.

Damn, the trumpet solo is pure electric energy. I love this noise.
Bye Freddie! All jazzmen will never forget this, your legendary solo! Tell to Tony that we miss him too!!

This is my favorite version of this song. This is a group of Blue Note All Stars recorded in 1987.
I wouldn't put quite that way, but your appreciation of his talent is definitely shared by me.
Greatest groove ever made EVER

Kudos to Hubbard and Henderson for the solo work! esp. Hubbard... good Lord, man! You blowin that thing!
Tony Williams' drumming has such attacking attitude, he drives up the energy level without calling undue attention to himself.
freddie hubbard is my favorite trumpeter to listen to. full of tricks and makes it look easy
This is SO absolutely SICK! Long live the TRUE American art form that is jazz!
Como tem gente boa nesse mundo !
