That may be the best Freddie Hubbard solo I've ever heard. When my daughter was an infant, she literally turned her head while feeding from a bottle when she heard this solo when this Blue Note special was on HBO. Later when Cassandra Wilson came on and started singing, she crapped her diaper. True Story!
i love jazz i think that jazz will never die as a musical style. but whats sad is that now most of our youth dousn't listen to this special kind of music. for all i know lil' wayne can be gone tomorrow but jazz stays forever. i think our youth needs to listen to more jazz and keep the fire burning.
Post bop jazz does not get any better than this. This is a performance to cherish. Everyone is on top of their game. The solo work, the ensemble work--all perfect!
We are SO lucky that this amazing moment in musical history was captured on audio and video. Absolutely mind blowing playing by everyone on the stage--and FREDDIE, dear lord! Hearing solos like this, it's no suprise why Hub went down in history as the Don of the modern jazz trumpet (to coin a phrase by my friend Maurice Brown). Hopefully Herbie and Ron will have many healthy and happy years ahead of them. RIP Freddie, Joe, and Tony--your many musical contributions will never be forgotten!
i agree. its good. this video nearly convinced me that freddie hubbard was the greatest trumpet ever. rest in peace freddie. we miss your spirit and you will never be forgotten.
«Jazz is Freedom. You think about that.» T. Monk Freddie Hubbard, one of the last Jazz legends, died one day after my 15th birthday. The day when he died I was watching an interview of him and this solo on «Blue Note - A Story of modern Jazz» and I thought: «This is an historical Solo for the Jazz». Rest in Peace Freddie.
I've watched this video on youtube almost every time im online. and every single time i say to myself that this is the best video i have ever witnessed by far. this is jazz and what every artist should strive for, though no one can do it like these guys
Wait! Hold the phone! Damn I've been listening to this version now about umpteen times and now marveling at how that mutha**f**g Hancock switches from basic melodic structure of noting to chording and tempo shifting and all in perfect counterbalance to Hubbard's masterful swinging trumpet, pounding out a beautiful rendition that hits so many strides, I cannot keep up or find my stumbling listening skills twirling and almost giving up. HANCOCK just continues to demonstrate he is not human, a fallen angel sent to give us a glimpse of the Empyrean Realm, allowing us to swim in those sacred waters!!! Damn!!!! God Bless Him!!! God Bless Ron Hubbard, Tony Williams, Ron Carter, et al for moving into our world for a brief time to bring utter joy!
i've heard this song all over the place as far back as i can remember but i never knew who wrote it. man, we owe the jazz world our gratitude. to do less than honour these geniuses and their work is to do a disservice to american culture and humanity as a whole
Whenever I listen to this song, I have to close my eyes, bob my head, and go on the journey to Canteloupe Island with Herbie and the crew. It ain't always the same ride, but its always a good one. Kudos to Hubbard and Henderson for the solo work! esp. Hubbard... good Lord, man! You blowin that thing!
When Freddie takes off on his solo, it's like a rocket launch. He is so hot, his horn is smoking. How he does it wearing a suit and tie is beyond me. This really cooks!! Thanks again.
I never listen to jazz but this is so cool. A lot of my favorite Japanese visual kei rock bands incorporate jazzy and rock n roll elements into hard rock. So it’s nice to see a song of that genre that’s this amazing. They KILLED it, especially the keyboardist and drummer
Every jazz trumpeter, student or otherwise, owes him a debt, there was no one he didn't influence with his technique, his soul, his style, his sound.. there was no style of music he couldn't play, I am stunned tonight.
Thank you so much for sharing this. Another uploader had shared a clearer version. Yet, the ending of their upload was cut off. This performance is quite a joy to listen to.
Great solo from the great Freddie Hubbard (1938-2008): notice how much blues is in his playing here and how soulful. A lot of younger cats could learn from that. Also he switches it up from chromatic passages to more tuneful ones.
This is pure music. People like me sought this music in New York. We dug deep and hard and found it.
This live version of Cantaloupe Island is the BEST!
Herbie plays the piano so funky.
The other musicians also are great.
I had the pleasure of playing with Herbie and composing a song for Freddie. These cats are legends indeed!
Joe Henderson approaches his solo in an amazing number of ways, deconstructs the harmony, the modal approach. He was a giant.
how can someone dislike this wonderful video? If Bach was alive, he would be probably jammin' with these legendary jazzers
The best performance of this classic piece I've ever found on UA-cam :)
What a man! Just hits the double C in the middle of the solo without breaking a sweat.. Freddie's got crazy skills..
Vegas Holum yes Freddie did have crazy skills ...but it cost him very dear 😪😪😪😪
I love the way Ron just eases into those notes. What a groove.
The 4 original musicians plus the great Joe Henderson on a serious classic! Don't get no better!

What a frontline!
Hancock, Hubbard, Henderson, Carter and Williams.
«Jazz is Freedom. You think about that.» T. Monk

Herbie is one of the greatest...fabulous tune and incredible playing!!!

Excellent talent, could listen to them all day.
A beautiful recording of some great musicians doing their thing, the production is as perfect as the performance.
The title number recalls an essence of wonderful flavor. A quite good feeling!

Figured that was Freddie Hubbard. What an amazing performance! All of them have unbelievable chops! Thanks for posting!
When Freddie takes off on his solo, it's like a rocket launch. He is so hot, his horn is smoking. How he does it wearing a suit and tie is beyond me. This really cooks!! Thanks again.

this is the best solo trompet that i ever heared in my whole life...
Magnífica execução de Cantaloupe Island! Jazz popular, comercial, para bater o pé.
Jazz pra ouvir pegando a estrada!
Yes yes Herbie and Co. Beautiful sounds!
Every jazz trumpeter, student or otherwise, owes him a debt, there was no one he didn't influence with his technique, his soul, his style, his sound.. there was no style of music he couldn't play, I am stunned tonight.
Every time I watch this I enjoy it immensely.
Awesome music. As I never have been heared before. I like mainly the starting. Great.
Damn, Freddy givin' it to that trumpet like it's his prom date!

By youth you mean how old? I'm 13 and i listen to jazz, it's my favourite kind of music.
herbies comping towards the end is incredible, so is hubbards solo, and hendersons AHHH its just incredible!
Great solo from the great Freddie Hubbard (1938-2008): notice how much blues is in his playing here and how soulful. A lot of younger cats could learn from that. Also he switches it up from chromatic passages to more tuneful ones.
This is a true inspiration to jazz players and jammers everywhere.

This and watermelon man, best two songs ever to improvise to. Me and my friends go at it for hours.
That trumpet solo! Absolutely great :D
I love this song! A fun, easy groove on bass, but a great piece for a big band jazz ensemble!
Simply outstanding!
I like how Herbie plays C#'s over the D minor. And yet it still sounds good. I'm thinking in concert key here for everyone's sake.
Listening to learn jazz style, and this is just the thing!
This is one of the best examples of the might of Jazz music ever!
Oh man, Freddie Hubbard is amazing. Isn't he?
