They could have recorded a hundred albums of original material and I would have ‘em all. If Herbie had used them as his group for all or the eighties and nineties (until Henderson passed) it would have been ideal IMHO.
……the winds, they are so warm, you wear just a smile. You eat and you love and laugh all the while. But beware the happiness! You will get lost in loneliness. The mist from the sea will hide you away. The game that you play will turn night to day. You´ll be gone for sure, my friend! What a foxy way to end!
This piece just has such an incredibly timeless and really moody riff. I just love it. And there's always such an incredible lightness to the freestyling that totally kills it. It's really hard to not be blown away by it :D ALWAYS puts a big smile on my face.
My dearest friend, neighbor clued me to Freddie Hubbard - First Light; Red Clay my first jazz LPs.Jazz the music which opens the mind, feeds the soul. Never old.
Wow. Just wow. Even 23 years later. I'm just in awe and wonder over this. What I wouldn't give to get into Herbie Hancock's head for a song writing session.
The music of Faso is an inexhaustible source of sweetness. It allows us to plunge deep inside ourselves and at the same time resonate with our fellow man, Yé Lassina Coulibaly❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Hay un DVD del concierto de 1985, que pertenece este video, con el reencuentro de estos músicos y el sello Blue Note. This is from a concert in DVD. The label Blue Note reunion in 1985, New York. Wonderfull!!
A beautiful work of art, Herbie’s early writing as mentioned in book , the assemble of musicians are like my hero’s , Freddie Hubbard is amazing with high notes , remembering Stanley Clark’s Nubia albums, Toney William’s at his best, Mr Henderson superb sax, and Ella’s bass , coolest, relaxed, playing, love this sound, Bruce Tribe.
C'ets là qu'on ressent tout le génie créatif de Herbie Hancock, c'est américain, pas français, on est à new york, on est à chicago, on est est transporté, ce morceau a été inspiré lors d'un moment de grâce.
Late convert to jazz hearing her this mind blowing bewilderingly beautiful music for the first time. A most welcome and timely life changer. Boundless gratitude.
Herbie Hancock is awesome on that piano Freddie Hubbard is awesome on that horn every 1 involved is awesome damn the song is awesome i love hearing it everyday
The Bass line for this song calls for a vamp, nothing more.If you cannot hear Ron Carter's tone, dynamics and phrasing, if it all sounds the same to you, you need a better speakers. Do check out some of Mr Carter's work with Mcoy Tyner, your opinion will change. BTW, there is a 1990 live version of this tune on UA-cam featuring Pat Metheney, Jack De Johnette and Dave Holland. Dave mostly vamps through that one also. And Dave Holland is no"normie"
@@marksilowitz3196 Ron's work is killer. When my bass player passed a couple years ago, I put together a 30 minute slide show w/ Ron's 'Saguaro' for his memorial. I know he was digging it.
Take a bow:
Herbie Hancock (piano)
Freddie Hubbard (trumpet)
Joe Henderson (sax)
Ron Carter (bass)
Tony Williams (drums)
Three fifths of this band are still here in spirit.
This is the STANDARD of EXCELLENCE.
The finest musicians at their prime.
When sound was a reason for living✌🏾🎺🎺🎹🎹🎷🎷💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾
A study finds that jazz fans are the happiest people of any genre of music. 😃 No surprises at all... 👍🏼
How is it that every one of Herbie's iterations of this is a classic?! Each performer absolutely top notch here.
I have been listening to this song multiple times with different lineups the last few days. Each one unique and each one perfect.

Increible, como es posible, despues de tantos anos, todavia hay gente, como Yo, quales gustan la musica de Herbie Hancock?
I like to listen to this melody also in the version in 2022 ,and also with Stanley Clarke,Wain Shorter , and Omar Hakim (1991)
Yes excellent version live from Japan. 1991 I believe
Herbie's solo beginning at 5:54 steals the show by a mile. Best solo ever on Cantaloupe Island by anyone.
Herbie Hancock - coming to Portland this September (2023). Got my tickets as a birthday present to myself. Can’t wait!
This piece just has such an incredibly timeless and really moody riff. I just love it. And there's always such an incredible lightness to the freestyling that totally kills it. It's really hard to not be blown away by it :D ALWAYS puts a big smile on my face.

The late, great genius Joe Henderson! What a band of geniuses!!!
They have all passed except for Herbie and Ron, sadly.
Wow. Just wow. Even 23 years later. I'm just in awe and wonder over this. What I wouldn't give to get into Herbie Hancock's head for a song writing session.

This reminds me of Cliff Huxtable, taking his family to a night club to listen to some good old Jazz. I fell in love with jazz because of that show.

Tony's rushing the beat being a hotdog & Ron is reeling him in. All flash and no groove.

A beautiful performance, but beside Mr. Hancock I can see other musicians, is it so hard to put their names in the description?
Massimo ! Herbie Hancock ( Piano), Frediie Hubbart (Trumpet), Ron Carter (Bass), Tony Williams (Drums) and Wayne Shorter (Saxo).
Joe Henderson on sax
That's Joe Henderson, not Wayne Shorter, on sax

I am so transported to Cantaloupe Island.
A very forward looking variation, even in it's acoustic form.
A true hero. I remember seeing him and Chick Corea in San Diego. Just two pianos and pure joy.

Normies: bass is so easy, he plays the same thing over and over.
Bass players: Ron Carter is a godlike legend, he plays the same thing over and over!

Leaving room for improvisation. Humble players know when to get out of the way

"If music does not surprise you, what's the point?"
this scares a lot of trumpet players
Of course it's Freddie Hubbard man
