- Who was the mysterious Baroness Kessler, one of the owners of The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows? This video explores theories about the character making appearances in only two scenes.
The Ninth Gate (1999) was co-written, produced, and directed by Roman Polanski and starred Johnny Depp as Dean Corso. Baroness Kessler was played by Barbara Jefford. The film is loosely based upon Arturo Pérez-Reverte's 1993 novel The Club Dumas.

1:48 Yes, she said whe saw devil when she was 15. Remember, she was german. In my opinion she was talking about very famous historic figure ;)
Ah yes... The Austrian artist who went on to lead Germany into war and shame.
I was quite impressed with Jefford's portrayal here. If my memory serves, she only had a few days to prepare for the shoot.
I believe she also made an attempt to travel to the Ninth Gate like Balkan and like Balkan failed leaving her disfigured.
What an observant perspective
I've seen this film at least a dozen times and I completely missed the stump right arm ...
The elevator conundrum escaped
Me as well... One thing I did notice recently is that she expressly prohibit smoking in her library then met her death by smoke and fire.
In my head cannon Balkan and Kessler were lovers, she introduced him to the occult and perhaps even the cult, perhaps her injuries are from a car accident after one of those orgies and Balkan was driving he came out unscathed and she didn't starting a feud.
I was thinking Kessler chose the "left hand path." Left side stuff is always attributed to evil in most of the standard occult literature.
Left hand equals left hand path.
What is that?
Black magic, mystery, allegorical, primitive
Right hand is more objective, scientific, civilized
It def makes sense you'd give up the right hand in exchange for the left hand power
The Himmler-connection makes sense and would have been a nice little tie-in with the Nazi occultists.
Yes, the author of the book stated her occupation within the circle of Nazi-conected occultists.
Hahahahahaha...🤣🤣🤣
When i saw it i thought her deformity was part of the curse or bad fortune that followed anyone in pursuit of the books. Her mear disfigurement was the result of her distant proximity to obtaining all of them. The closer you got the greater your ill fortune. But that is just what i thought at the time im not positive of this determination. Once she got CLOSER she woke up dead...
👏 Brilliant! Thank you for your insightful observations
The oranges must have been a nod to The Godfather, right? Like in The Godfather they were foreboding death...And the death follows after the secretary returns to the office...Just my 2 cents.
Oranges often symbolise death in movies, actually. They are often shown right before something bad happens. I don't know if it started with The Godfather, but you're right, it's definitely the case here!

i would like to see this film from the Balkan perspective
I enjoy your videos on this movie. I think much of this is imagination and speculation. I did get the impression that her stump right arm was most likely a result of her being involved in this group. You play with fire, you get burned. You play the Devil's game, you don't get out of it without paying a price. The clairvoyance is interesting. Not sure if you are reading more into it than actually is, but that's an interesting theory.
Not sure, the movie is rather dismissive of the cult as non-threatening posers.
Roman Polansky was heavily envolved in gnosticism (the bad kind) and Peres-Reverte is not distant from that despite being atheist.
Kessler is depicted has an incomplete woman (a surrogate of one) , most problably lesbian and the amputated hand, along with spine injury and the burning library (the soul to be burnt) points to the fact that she had a deviated understanding of the matter she was dealing in
What “bad kind” exactly?
polanski has stated he is an atheist and doesnt believe in anything, even going back to rosemary's baby, levin said same about himself too.
By "the bad kind" you do mean the Left-Hand Masonic type, uh? I have an old friend who informed me about it, a longtime ago. Very proficient guerilla chronicler. Made a lot of enemies... I don't know if he'a still alive.
@@ptolemeeselenion1542would love to hear more about this
Have you seen the 1971 " Mephisto Waltz?" This a favorite than could use some deep decryption.
I think the change in script to not having the picture would make you think she met the actual devil instead of an evil person.
Wonder if the 15 year old Kessler met Corso's father...
The rule of two
Inception
Think Kessler is Polanski's surrogate
Maybe some time we could talk about other kinds of war criminals too? I mean shake it up a little? Or are some victims more important than others? (Hints: Holomodor, Mao, Pol Pot, Stalin).
Couldn't agree more. I am German, and we get taught about Hitler, Second World War, Drittes Reich (Third Reich), and of course the Holocaust in school (history lessons in 10th grade, so the pupils are a bit older and can grasp and understand what all this meant).
I, personally, additionally have read many biographies about Hitler, other important people of the NSDAP, the Second World War, the Holocaust... the list goes on.
Meanwhile it is still possible to buy Stalin busts in Russia, and Mao even get praised (German politicians were some of these fools, which didn't really surprise me, thinking of the politics they make these days in Germany 🤦🏻♀️).
But back to the topic, you have such a good point; why not include one of the other terrible leaders who were criminals, too, instead of bringing up Hitler (or one of his consorts) over and over again?
I'm honestly glad that the picture didn't make into the movie, and they changed the plot to what it is.
Love these videos
Love love love this film too....like have seen it a hundred times...have watched it more than angel heart lol 😆❤
OMG! I love the same two films!
