  • Honda CB750 First Start Attempt Ends In Failure | Using Brake Cleaner to Start an Engine | Part 10
In this episode I make the first attempt to start my Honda CB750 K series project bike. I have already done quite a lot of work on it; changing the starter and oil pressure switch; cleaning the oil tank and putting in fresh oil; setting the valve clearances and ignition timing; cleaning and rebuilding the carburettors. All of which are documented in my previous videos on this channel.
Here's what I used in this video:
    Fire extinguisher: ebay.us/Mks7nC
    JIS Screwdrivers: ebay.us/R2brPs
    Auxiliary fuel tank: ebay.us/otHb8C
    CB750 NGK Spark plugs: ebay.us/B4z3sO
    Brake and Clutch Cleaner: ebay.us/ibW7Zu
In preparation for this attempt at a first start, I made sure I had a fire extinguisher to hand, it is best not to take too many risks at this stage in a motorcycle project. The external auxiliary fuel tank is a little fiddly but I managed to fill it and connect it OK. I put some new NGK spark plugs in so that it had the best chance of firing possible too.
I made a number of attempts just using normal unleaded fuel without any success. I checked to make sure that I was still getting a spark. I then tried squirting brake cleaner into the carbs. After a few coughs and bangs, I did manage to get it running for a few seconds, which is brilliant news, but not quite what I was hoping for having spent hours working on those carbs already.
I wasn’t sure what the problem was, but as the carbs are not really the right ones for this year of bike I felt there may be an issue there. I decided to stop at that point so that I could check a few things out before making another attempt in the near future.

Absolutely, the silver lining is that she seems like she's going to run! :D Always extremely satisfying hearing cylinders fire for the first time in decades. Even if just on brake cleaner haha!
Hopefully I can solve this pesky carb issue and get her running under her own steam very soon. Cheers! ☕

@@SPANNERRASH and I shall keep watching you chipping away brother! As soon as you post a video on your CB750 I watch it because I own 3 CB750s! And I just picked up an old BSA but I'm still trying to figure the year out and it looks like a gold star but not very sure it does have a pre unit motor and I cannot wait to figure out what this old girl is all about! Keep on posting videos and I shall keep watching brother!

@@oilinmyblood3906 Awesome, that sounds very exciting indeed. I've always fancied a BSA but never actually had one of my own. Maybe one day I will change that, and add one to my little collection. Enjoy getting to the bottom of what the bike is.

@@SPANNERRASH thank you brother! and I think I figured it out, I believe she is a 54 BSA golden flash 650 with a swingarm frame, but I am still looking more into it and will be acquiring some help hopefully from Century motorcycles here in LA oh, they've been in LA since 53 and they specialize in British motorcycles, if anybody can help me it's going to be then

After several years of sitting our CB750 would not start so after checking spark and it checked out went after fuel delivery what we found is no fuel to the fuel pump which is a small vacuum fuel pump so we changed out the filter in the tank which made no difference what ended up to be the fix was pulling the fuel pump apart and freeing up the piston that is located in the fuel pump which was stuck in the fuel pump housing and put it back together with all the same parts Just make sure all parts move freely in the fuel pump housing and all will go well

Thanks for the information, but it sounds like your CB is from a later generation than this one. There isn't a fuel pump on the K series bikes, it relies on gravity.
Isn't it a great feeling though, when you work out what is wrong and get a vehicle that has lain dormant for a long time to start.

Just curious, is that brake cleaner chlorinated or non chlorinated?

    • @SPANNERRASH
      @SPANNERRASH  Рік тому +2

Well I know a hell of a lot more about my brake cleaner than I did. but whether it is cholinated or not isn't anything I could find out. The brand is PMA, and I was amazed that besides Naptha, it contains Butane and Propane which amazed me. Hope that helps with your curiosity :)

As a retired Honda automotive engineer, it was interesting to see you using brake and clutch cleaner to fire up your 750. Thanks for looking into the contents of the can just to satisfy my curiosity. It's wonderful to see you getting this great old bike back on the road. I really enjoy your videos.
