Weiter so beim HR!

Yup, I saw her little face, totally into it. It amazes me how these audiences can just sit there like statues, not moving a muscle while listening to this soul-stirring music. See, they'd have to come and contain me--I'd be standing up shouting amen at some parts and clapping lol (I just love 34:22). There's no way I could sit still like a stump hearing all this magnificence.

I adore this orchestra and seek it for whatever work I want to hear. Such a fine orchestra who you just know knows the rep. Especially the German composers. It's so sad that only 133,000 people have sought out this magnificent Brahms creation in the last 6 years. Please, God, don't let this splendid music fade out. Whoever thought we might live to see the end of great music? What else separates us from the jungle?

What a contrast there is between Orozco-Estrada's more traditional, classical Brahms First and Skrowaczewski's gut-wrenching emotional one! Both achieve greatness, this one with its energetic, even urgent, forward momentum is exhilerating, and the other probes the depths of the soul. The FRSO responds equally well to both conductors, bringing out their individual concepts and the strength of the music. I feel privileged to have heard them both.

I fully get how we are influenced by the greats that precede us. Brahms did not enjoy that perspective. For him, to compose in the tradition where Beethoven is the chief exemplar, is another matter. I think he felt deeply unworthy, how dare he, etc. My hunch is the Schumanns bolstered his courage to give a try, not to hide. Let us be grateful he was supported by intimates who saw his talent and knew he had something to add to the tradition he felt connected. Oh, don’t forget that Wagner was cutting new trail as Brahms labored in older vineyards. Greatness does not equal cutting edge production. Depth and sturdy construction will always count for something. JS Bach will always remind of of that.

I only discovered the performances of Andre's Orozco-Estrada on this UA-cam channel with the Hessischer Rundfunk Orchestra after I started listening to many and various symphonic readings here. I long knew he had a sizeable tenure with HR, and he is no longer there, he's on his "way up" as he certainly deserves to be...but as I hear his Beethoven and Brahms interpretations now, I realize what a pity it is he's no longer in Frankfurt. Perhaps in comparison with Vienna, Berlin, London, New York et al., Frankfurt might be considered a backwater, but a musician of his caliber lifts/lifted it considerably out of the ordinary. A shame he's not with "us" any more! This Brahms 1st is audible proof of that. JAT

You could probably write a book on that subject (and I’m sure some people have done so). I think it has something to do with the excesses of romanticism (emphasis on originality and freedom from formal constraints) leading eventually to its demise-the pressure to pen something obscure and difficult to understand became a tyranny in its own right that inhibited expression of anything with emotional resonance. Maybe the anxieties of the 20th century could only be expressed by ugly, dissonant music. Or maybe too many composers were writing for the critical evaluation of academic musicologists? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Nobody was in a hurry. He worked on this symphony 14 years, and released it in 1876. People took enough time to think, read, pray, camp in the forest on horseback...which Herr Brahms enjoyed, as he exchanged melodies with Roma while sharing food, wine, and stories at the fire circle. (Hungarian Dances origin).
Somewhere, in a home-office, or a trailer park, a music school drop-out is composing lovely music. The record companies, the Labels won't pick up their offering.
From time to time I hear some outstanding music and gifted performances in my former travels. (I'm old: speak four languages, play 3 instruments at small venues).
Thing is, some of the wonder-filled performers were not white, not European, no English speakers and no money was asked. The regions were unpaved and not everybody had electricity.

Well, the main theme of the finale of the First Symphony is also reminiscent of the main theme of the finale of Beethoven's Ninth, and when this resemblance was pointed out to Brahms he replied that any dunce could see that! In 1876, when the work was premiered in Vienna, it was immediately hailed as "Beethoven's Tenth"!
