6:16 - I have Focal Bathys. Sadly, as far as I can tell, you can't use them AT ALL while off. So once the battery is cooked, they are e-waste. Would be more than happy to be corrected tho!
That would be an instant deal breaker for me (if I was looking for bluetooth headphones in the first place). The Sony WH-1000xm4 I got with my phone can be used wired with an aux cord when turned off, which is actually my preferred way to use them. Even then, I will use my Meze 99 Neo or AKG K712 Pro over the Sonys whenever I can, since both of those sound better.
I looked it up, and according to a post on iFixit, the battery is not designed to be user replaceable. It's crazy to ask someone to pay several hundred bucks for something that will only last a few years, especially when it's not due to a real technical limitation. $1200 for the same problem is like an automatic disqualifier IMO.
@@justinharrison9521 yeah, for the next 5-10 years but i would bet that you can't get a new battery in 20 years. On normal headphone most likely only your cable will break but it is easy and cheap to change to another one. When you have good cables they will last for decades. The only thing you have to change regularly are the earpads but it is the same for this Bluetooth garbage. I have an Sennheiser HD598 which is now ~14 years old and still works. My HD660s is 6 years old and my Focal Celestee is 3 years old. I expect all of those headphone will still works when the last Bathys goes to the landfill because of a dead battery and no replacement.

What i like about the bathys is that it works even when you charge it. Most of the high end bluetooth headphones like Bose turn off when you charge. Its a shame you have to turn it on to use the 3.5 mm jack. But after 1-2 years (i bought it around launch), it still has good battery life. And i read it maybe in the manual or on focal website, but they change the battery if there is a problem with it. If i remember correctly it not a proprietary battery, you can buy one if you want to.
I love how Sennheiser got there that “wash” of the cymbal, while almost any other brand makes them sound like they not “washy” at all. Just bonkers. We loosing so much high end there. Brutal.
I feel like the Airpod Max's were better at removing hiss - but I don't think you'd have a bad audio experience with anyone. Its all about UX at that point.
I'm still perfectly happy with my old Bose Quiet Comfort from 2016. Changed the ear pillows once. Still going strong and keeping plane rides comfortable.
I've owned the Bathys since they were released. Worth every dollar. And the app is fine (has the noise cancelling settings, EQ and hearing compensation too), no signup if you don't want to. Then there's the properly good battery life, and at least Focal has also said they will replace batteries (not free of course) when they eventually die.
I bought them this week and I love them ! But is it true that the bathys will sound better over time? I heard that they need at least 40 hours of listening to get the full power and stuff
@@Lukas-vy5pb No that's a common myth in the headphone world, that they need to "burn in" before they get good. It's caused by a shit ton of factors but the gist of it is "People noticed that they like the sound of something they've become used to better than the sound of something new and instead of rightfully saying that *you* need to get used to them, they've started saying that the hardware is changing"
the problem with having an app is that it will stop working one day. Eventually it will not be worth the R&D cost to the company to keep the app updated and compatible with every OS release and support will be discontinued. It's good that it doesn't require a login because that's another service that will one day stop being supported so another point of failure
Did anyone else get that Randy Feltface sketch in their head when Wade invented "blue"? Because there are, after all, no blue foods... name one blue food...
Bluetooth tech has its convenience but the reliability and persistent issues can be a pain. The fact that these highly-priced headphones will eventually become useless because of battery life is utterly frustrating.
0:25 when the audio cut out I thought my bluetooth stuff was breaking because I was just updating related stuff, only to read the text and realize it was *your* bluetooth stuff breaking. that made me laugh
That mini "incompetent degenerates" rant made me laugh way too much. It's especially funny to me given how much I drive for work and some days the incompetence of others really gets to me.
Funny thing about the digital pushback. I still buy movies on disc. Why? Because I can watch them any time I want, I don't have to worry about them not being available/deleted, and I OWN THEM. I had an argument with a guy on another video once (well, he called it an argument, I called it wasting his time) about how his collection of streaming movies was far superior (you know, the ones you get the codes for in physical media?). He said I was "old" and "backwards" and that it was stupid to own discs. I asked him what would he do if those servers suddenly shut down and all that money he spent on those movies were just gone. He said "oh, they can't do that, it's illegal". Then there was the huge Sony movie server in the UK that shut down a couple years ago. I hope he wasn't getting movies from that one.
(Agreeing with you, to clarify in advance.) Doesn't even have to be *their* servers. What if your internet connection goes down? As happened to me the other week (cable was damaged), so I had no internet connection for a few days. Fortunately I had some entirely-offline media to tide me over, but it was rough. Alternatively, what if the media is written off for tax purposes and deleted from the servers, like all those Cartoon Network shows a while back? Or, what if they lose the rights to a song in the movie and have to edit it and their choice of replacement song doesn't fit, is it still the same? Did Han Solo shoot first? (Not quite the same situation but still a post-release change that people have strong opinions about, and streaming only makes it more possible for other movies etc to make similar changes.) Physical media isn't affected by *any* of that, because you always have the exact copy you bought. (I personally would also argue in favour of DRM-free digital downloads filling a similar role, but that has downsides that are likely dealbreakers for some physical media enjoyers, and is not a 1:1 equivalent. But there's a mashup I only have because I was sent an mp3 over discord, because it's otherwise *completely unavailable* on the internet as a whole.)
I feel like in 5-10 years there's gonna be a massive DIY movement for restoring BT headsets and converting them into standard sets. Probably gonna be heaps of fun and frustration.
"I've ditched Windows and Apple's next I'm tellin' ya." You won't. Everything you have is Apple and even after much complaints as of late, you still get more :D
I know you’ve basically written off wireless headphones for having a limited lifespan but do try to get those batteries replaced. Apple will probably be shit if not impossible to fix so throw those in the bin but those AKGs will be using a standard lipo battery you can disconnect and replace with another one on eBay.
I was doing calls for a government organisation, a dude drove in his driveway and automatically joined the call in his car. "What the bloody hell's this?!"
This is why I got the 99 Classics, tried them on at the store and immediately loved the sound, and they will never die a battery death. The guy at the store even said Meze is pretty good about providing replacement parts, so hopefully these will be my forever set. Now if only I could find a phone with a headphone jack that doesn't suck and has long software support...
Consider looking into Sony flagships. They don't have all the bells & whistles other top companies offer, but are a solid choice hardware and software wise (and yes, they got a 3,5mm jack)
I've been looking into Focal for the speakers in my Abarth, but then I discovered BLAM, same audio engineer but somewhat cheaper and with an audio signature that I think I will prefer in the long term.
NGL the old AUX stinkbud mic almost sounds unacceptably good. Like, we had this TEN YEARS AGO!!! But somehow our Bluetooth microphones never really got much better in that time. BROTHER HUMANS ARE SOON GONNA LAND ON FREAKING MARS HOW HAVE WE NOT FIGURED OUT HOW TO MAKE DECENT BLUETOOTH MICROPHONES BY NOW?!?!
@@mysteryboyee Yes..... So how about we update that standard then? Like I know that's very much easier said than done, but come on now this audio quality is an insult to modern tech. I'm studying to work in the live audio industry. And I know for a fact, standards in audio transmission and transmission of data in general can change. If there is a limitation then you upgrade and change your systems even if it's cumbersome and hard. This is not mission impossible.

I believe this is the first time we've heard the headphone test song beyond the typical cutoff point in one of these videos
hi
@@CheddyHello
I think he did it one other time in an After Show vid where he compared a bunch of cans back to back?

What i like about the bathys is that it works even when you charge it. Most of the high end bluetooth headphones like Bose turn off when you charge. Its a shame you have to turn it on to use the 3.5 mm jack. But after 1-2 years (i bought it around launch), it still has good battery life. And i read it maybe in the manual or on focal website, but they change the battery if there is a problem with it. If i remember correctly it not a proprietary battery, you can buy one if you want to.
The side story about blue fruit was worth the watch on it's own.
Those microphone test stories are funny alone. That Raycon/KZ mic test was a funny ramble.
I feel like the blue fruit is a personal story that we need to know more about
I love how Sennheiser got there that “wash” of the cymbal, while almost any other brand makes them sound like they not “washy” at all. Just bonkers. We loosing so much high end there. Brutal.
4:56 that caught me off guard so much. Like what?? The song isnt just 30 seconds long??
Way longer ,it's a whole track, he just doesn't use all of it. Even as he ended it, there's more
The airpods max sounds like a journalist talking random shit in tv💀💀💀💀

I feel like the Airpod Max's were better at removing hiss - but I don't think you'd have a bad audio experience with anyone. Its all about UX at that point.
I WAS NOT READY FOR THE SONG TO CONTINUE
On the subject of noise cancelling I would love to see you talk about etymotic iems and their foam tips, for those who prefer passive noise cancelling
I still can't get over how Airpods Max case looks like a sport bra
I'm still perfectly happy with my old Bose Quiet Comfort from 2016. Changed the ear pillows once. Still going strong and keeping plane rides comfortable.
@greystone9350 Batteries can be a little annoying I agree.
Sounds cromulent to me. I don't think the AKGs can have their batteries replaced easily.
@@naunau311 Ok ! Thank you for answering
the problem with having an app is that it will stop working one day.
Well, thanks for that little heart attack in the beginning, I though that my sound card failed.
I thought my AirPods disconnected 🤣
Sound card failure can cause myocardial infarction?
Mildly
Bluetooth tech has its convenience but the reliability and persistent issues can be a pain. The fact that these highly-priced headphones will eventually become useless because of battery life is utterly frustrating.
That audio cut-out because of the AirPoods was peak DankPods

You absolutely can....

I was not emotionally prepared for the extended headphone test
0:22 i wasnt paying attention and straight up thought my senn'ies or my amp died LOL
(Not quite the same situation but still a post-release change that people have strong opinions about, and streaming only makes it more possible for other movies etc to make similar changes.)
Physical media isn't affected by *any* of that, because you always have the exact copy you bought.
7:39 “VERY” fair test

Sennheiser HE-1 review coming soon
I feel like in 5-10 years there's gonna be a massive DIY movement for restoring BT headsets and converting them into standard sets. Probably gonna be heaps of fun and frustration.

"I've ditched Windows and Apple's next I'm tellin' ya."
You won't.
The peppa pig band-aid is dope
No, it’s not dopamine it’s a plaster!
@@Leo-ym5xn I have, they're REALLY expensive in my area and don't have very long software support... Everything else about them seems great on paper.
I was beginning to think we wern't going to get a Dank Pods episode this week. Nice work. 👍
Sennheiser Momentum 4's are legitimately pretty good. You can actually control them lol, and they sound good.
Wearing them right now, they genuinely do sound quite good

That microphone test made me keep thinking of that Randy Feltface "Name me one blue food" gag.
Blue means there’s sharks in it!!!
I love your unhinged rants when testing microphones. 90% of them could be Monty Python skits.
Your videos are always on point, keep it going
Because it's literally not possible as of this moment, it's a limitation in the current version of the bluetooth standard itself
That's why I use the PS5 planer magnet headphoens for voice calls. I wouldn't run around outside with them however.
I'm not holding my breath on "landing on Mars soon" until they actually announce a launch day. They've been saying that for 30 years now.
@@OtakuUnitedStudio Not in 10 years at least. We wouldnt even be returning to the moon until starflop is replaced by something actually capable.
Hey just as an aside one of the major benefits of Bluetooth headphones is that for people who struggle with proprioception wires can be frustrating. Think a blind cat and a ball of wool.
