@@LayneComfort Hey Layne, what campsites have stream by them? Do you know how many miles the robbins trail loop is? Robbins, Birkhead, and Hannah"s Creek. Thanks
That loop looks to be in the 5-6 mile range Tim. Campsites 4&6 both have stream access. You could probably also find a stream side site along where Robbins Branch and Robbins Branch trail run together. Highly recommend the Uwharrie Lakes Region Trail Guide book, it has all these details and more.
Great video and great info! I've been to the southern portion of Uwharrie but not up around Birkhead. Really liked how you showed your route on the map and what the campsites look like!
Hey Layne. Great video. We were at Birkhead for three nights back in January and had a great time. It was cool hearing some of the local history. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.
We carried our water from the creek and camped up on the ridge at a very nice site. After seeing camp six on your video I wish we had stayed the first night there. I guess we'll have to go back and check it out.
I got Don's book and we ended up doing a similar loop, hiked to camp 6 and spent the night there and left the next day. Next time we want to check out the Cooper Cemetery.
I thought Camp 6 was the nicest looking camp in the area! I would like to check out the Cooper Cemetery trail as well, I heard that one day they may connect it so it doesn’t just dead-end.
There are a bunch of good sites out in Birkhead. The Coolers Knob area has some nice camping on the ridge sans water, camps 3 & 6 are both nice with water access. Sometimes they have those paper maps available at the trailhead but they aren’t always stocked. Have a good first solo trip!
Hey gnar, Uwharrie is a great place to get started backpacking. It is dispersed backcountry camping throughout the national forest, first come first served
Was there for 1 night in early April with my youngest daughter. We camped at the spot you spent your second night. I heard some crazy noises there at night!!
@@LayneComfort Thank you! Such an awesome place! It was our first time backpacking / primitive camping. She was a trooper, we hiked about 7 miles total. I have to admit, the sounds at night really spooked me!
The ghost hasn’t hurt anyone yet so the noises should be as bad as it gets! She might enjoy Little Long Mountain farther south in URE for another trip. Shorter walk than y’all did in Birkhead but you would need to carry water to the top. Best views in the whole forest!
@@LayneComfort Thanks, I'll check it out! The only thing Birkhead was missing for me was a chance to fish. I was really hoping those streams would be deep enough in places to have some panfish. Still a great place. Once things cool down a bit we'll have to try it again
Won’t be too much fishin in the Little Long Mountain area either. For that I would check out Hannah’s Creek near the southern boundary of the Birkhead Wilderness - biggest body of water I remember seeing. Camp 6 would be a perfect base camp to scope out the North & South Prongs
Uharwrrie mountains are one of the oldest if not the oldest in north America. They used to tower at 20,000 ft wind and erosion have taken its toll on the mountains. West border of montgomery county rivers lakes and mountains the eastern side mainly flat and sandy. Sandhills used to be the ocean front. Witch is why fossils of old sea creatures can be found east of the sandhills all the way to the beach. I have all three of the County heritage books for montgomery co. My ancestry is of the parsons.
That region gets all kinds of crazy weather! My parents live about 20 minutes away and got hit by a tornado in February. Straight line winds come through on a fairly regular basis as well. Add all that up with the shallow root systems/towering trees and you’ve got a recipe for what we see out there
Don't miss the special surprise guest appearances near the end of Day 2!
Good trip! Looked like fun, loved the campsite by the creek.
It was fun to run into Joey & Cate out there! We enjoyed that campsite by the creek. Thanks for watching!

@@LayneComfort Thanks so much!
Just got that Childrey book yesterday at El Dorado outpost. Loving it, packed full of info. Nice vid btw too.
The Uwharrie Lakes Region Trail Guide is a great resource! Thanks for watching.

Thanks for sharing what you liked STA! If you enjoyed the southern portion of Uwharrie you won’t be disappointed with a visit up to Birkhead

Hey Randy! That’s awesome that you got to spend three nights in Birkhead, whereabouts did you stay at? The history in this area is very cool.
We stayed two nights at camp three and the third night at one of the sites on the Robin's Branch trail.
Good stuff! I saw several nice campsites along the Robbins Branch trail, both up on the ridge and down along the creek

I also wish I had stayed at camp six - good excuse to make it back!

Which was you favorite camp to stay at? Thinking of doing my first solo backpack here. Also where did you get the maps? Great video.

@@LayneComfort awsome thanks for the reply! Cant wait to get out there when it warms up just a little
I look forward to hearing how it goes!
Hey Layne I have never backpacked before but live fairly close to Uwarrhie. Did you have to reserve the campsites or are the first come first serve?
Hey gnar, Uwharrie is a great place to get started backpacking. It is dispersed backcountry camping throughout the national forest, first come first served
@@LayneComfort Have you ever experienced not being able to get a site?
Never been a problem, there are plenty of sites and if all established sites were taken can always set up off in the woods
@@LayneComfort thank you so much for your help!

That’s awesome to take your daughter out camping in Birkhead! Maybe the ghost of Mr. Hanes was raising cane that night

Thanks for sharing Evelyn! I always enjoy hearing information on the Uwharries.
It was a couple of hurricanes and two ice storms friend

Spooky guy watching at 5:00
Haha, good eye! There were a pair of day hikers who were checking out the Camp 3 area. I chatted with them before setting up.
It’s a pretty hike isn’t it? I was there a couple of weeks ago for a 3-day, 2-night trip. Check out my videos. Thanks for sharing! Monk
It sure is! Yes sir
Looks like a Native American trail marker 12:41
Sure looks like it, doesn’t it? Tree formations like that are fairly common across URE.
I live in Denton
Not too far away!
