Uwharrie Trail Dutchman's Creek Trail Figure 8 Loop - Uwharrie NF NC | 3-day Backpacking Report

- This is the full length trip report with natural sounds and on-trail commentary from a 3-day backpacking adventure that Joey and I took to Uwharrie National Forest in February 2021. We covered ~20 miles hiking the Uwharrie Trail & Dutchman's Creek Trail Figure 8 Loop starting at the 24-27 trailhead.
There are plentiful camping and water options across the Wood Run section of Uwharrie. The Dutchman's Creek Trail tends to stick to the ridgelines while the Uwharrie Trail more so follows the streams.
Highlight Video set to music:

URE = Home ♥️
That campsite right off of the uwharrie trail is where we camp at last weekend, it was so peaceful hearing the stream at night...
Sounds like you had a great weekend! Can’t beat a nice stream sound at night
Nice trip. I've enjoyed a few foggy wet mornings walking in those woods.
The Uwharries are a great place to enjoy a walk in the woods
Great video and trip, Layne! Really enjoy the way you mix in the history of the area in your hikes. Looking forward to your next post!
Scott - thanks for taking the time out of your 2,190-mile journey to watch my 20-mile jaunt! Next video set will be a trek along the Art Loeb Trail
@@LayneComfort Oh man! Looking forward to it! Really would like to do that trail soon as I can. Thank you for sharing your adventures!
Looking like an amazing place for hiking! Thanks for sharing! Amazing video! 👌👌
Thanks Trav! I always enjoy hiking in Uwharrie. Beautiful and has a lot of history
Great video! Awesome sights and sounds. Well done. Crow
Thanks for watching Crow! I appreciate the kind words
Your first hike of 2021 was my last. Took my 6 yr old on his first backpacking trip. Lower loop over a couple days after Christmas. Great video / great hike.
Thanks Gonella. Very cool to hear that you got your son out on his first backpacking trip
Nice trip. You're definitely perfecting your formula. I think more narration mixes very well with you using nature as your main source of music. Good to hear joey talk more too.
Thanks for the feedback buddy. Joey and I just got back in from a trip. We were thinking of you out there, hope to get on trail together soon.
Quality. Waiting to see you do the AT. Your camera and editing skills have gotten quite polished.
Thank you Barragin. Let me know what you think of the quality next month - I switched cameras and editing programs
I’ve done a bunch of AT sections but don’t have any plans to do the full thing. Would be a dream to have that much time off to just hike.
Hi! Going to do this hike next week. Coming up from Florida. Question. Do you need to use bear bags on this trail? Would you recommend them for this trail? Btw I absolutely love your videos!!
Hi Leslene! That’s a long drive up from Florida. There are no bears in Uwharrie but I do often use a bear bag to keep food away from other critters like rodents. I’ve also slept with my food in Uwharrie so either way would work. Thank you and enjoy your visit!
Thank you for the information. Honestly, I’m worried about the weight of my pack so not needing a bear bag or canister will help me a lot.
Finding your videos is what introduced me to the Uwharrie forest and I can’t wait to get there. Planning three days . . . doing the figure 8, going to approach from a different trail head though.
Thank you so much Layne! 🙂
Definitely no need to carry a bear canister. You’d be fine sleeping with your food if weight is a concern for a bag. October is a great time of year to get out to Uwharrie, happy trails!
Looks like a good time! Have you ever done/thought about doing a video with a rundown of your gear? Not sure about others but I would be interested.
It sure was a good time Joshua! Thanks for letting me know about your interest. I don't have any plans to do a gear video right now but here is my lighterpack loadout for this trip if you'd like to take a look: lighterpack.com/r/5la3de
@@LayneComfort that works! Thanks!
That is the gear that works for me! YMMV
Can you gold pan there or need a permit
I’m not familiar with the rules & regulations regarding panning out there, never tried it myself
Do you happen to have a map of the route you took? (EDIT : Nevermind! I watched the whole video and will check out the book!)
Yes sir - The Uwharrie Lakes Region Trail Guide by Don Childrey has all the info needed to succeed in URE
@@LayneComfort It's on the way to my house right now! (found it on Amazon last night)
I'm headed to the Birkhead Wilderness area this weekend for a quick overnight. Never hiked/camped in Uwharrie before!
Love your videos dude.
Awesome Drew! Birkhead was the location of my first solo overnighter many years ago. All I did was hike in from Tot Hill TH to Camp 1 (although Camp 1B had a ton of blowdown last time I hiked through - not sure if the area is currently campable). Good luck on your trip and I'd love to hear how it goes
@@LayneComfort how cool! I'm planning to do the loop from Joe Miller's book. Starts at the Robbins Branch trailhead. If you happen to have any recommendations for a cool campsite I'd love to hear it. Seems like there are several to choose from out there. This will be my first time doing an overnight longer than the Campbell Creek Loop at Raven Rock I'm really excited.
I love Joe's book Backpacking North Carolina, it is my favorite all-time resource. I'd aim for Camp 3 or Camp 6 coming from Robbins Branch TH. Once you get the Uwharrie Trail Guide you'll see exactly where those are located. Wear some orange this weekend.
