- After taking Japan by storm when it was released in theaters in 2001, Spirited Away (Sen To Chihiro no Kamikakushi) was finally making its way to DVD, in Japan, during the summer of 2002. Millions of tapes and DVDs were being shipped to stores, and it sold 1.4 million DVDs during the first week of its release. But something wasn’t right.

This is a very well made video about such an obscure ghibli fact, I was shocked to see how low the view count was! I'm curious though if the Blu-ray release corrected the issue, seeing as TVs modernized and don't look different to theater screens
Maybe to satisfy everyone, they should create versions of the film one with the tint and one clear. Gibli gets has their revised color tone, and the public get there clearer toned movie.
Kinda reminded me of the Star Wars special edition changes where George Lucas made changes, but people wanted the original versions, but the special edition are the movies that are still in print and stream to this day
Fascinating story haha. I love weird tidbits of history like this! Great work for such an oddly specific story!
Is there any explanation on why this type of mistake happened?
Blue and Red values got reduced by 30% compared to original.
No data compression format works like that.. Actually it wouldn't even reduce data, since the blue and green images were still at the same size (JPEG reduces the chroma image size, darkening wouldn't cause less storage-weight)
