In the process of making this using your tutorial…. So far so good! The foam clay took a bit of trial as I’m not used to it’s texture but came out decent. Was able to get the same witch globe head and book box too. My daughter and I actually got the head off and with a little ingenuity are using the whole base so the globe can screw on and off if the head ever needs replacement or repair! Thank you so much for posting this as we are hard core Disney fans!
So glad it is working out for you. I was going to originally use the base that the witch head came on, but it actually still worked, so I re-purposed it for another project. I'd love to see the end result. Take care and Happy Halloween!!!
Hi there, where did you get the box from? I've been looking for it everywhere. Which projector did you end up going with? Any info would be helpful, thank you
What an amazing project! It's a lot of work, but you can make it seem like I could do it too. Thanks for sharing this. Your son must have been thrilled!
Thank you so much for the compliment, it does take a little time, but I tried to make it as easy as possible to follow so anyone could do it. Also, yes my son and his bride loved it. Madame Leota greeted guests as they arrived for their reception.
It's been awhile since I actually did separate the two. I believe there were a few screws that I had to undo, but I will check for you. I actually have found a couple of these animatronics during the off season and was able to get them for a good price. I'll take a look and let you know for sure, unless you have figured it out by the time you get my message.

@@plantspace the crystal ball itself has about a 12 inch diameter, with a 9 inch opening. Like I describe in my tutorial, I repurposed a Halloween Prop. Unfortunately, those particular ones are getting harder to find and when u do they tend to be a bit expensive. A suggestion that I have wo in old be to go to the hobby shops in your area and see if you could find something that would work or try a lamp globe, the sell them on Ebay and amazon.
Hi, I came across your video and was immediately inspired to try it. I have pretty much have everything. Just Recieved the Spirit ball from eBay and went to test out the projection which looked perfect when shot directly onto the foam head… but when I put the clear Acrylic ball over it, I got a full face projection of Madame Leota on both the front of the ball and head. How do I get rid of the full faced image showing up on the ball? I know you mentioned getting rid of a small light around the mouth by using candles, but I am having issues just having the image on the head and not on the ball. Could it be that my projector has too many Lumens/Lux (too bright)? Mine has 9500 Lumens. I got one this high so the image would show up even in a room with Ambient light. I hope you can help. Thank you in advance.
Sorry to hear that you are having this issue. I'll try to trouble shoot a bit for you. First, check your spirit ball you purchased from ebay. The ones that I have used always seem to have one side of the crystal ball slightly frosted opposed to the side that you could see the head through. Are you making sure that the projection is going through the non-frosted side? If you are trying to do it through the frosted side you may have that happen. Second, I'm not sure why a higher lumen would cause the projection to appear on the ball an face, but one way to find out would be to put a tinted filter in front to reduce the lumens and see if that eliminates the issue. Let me know if either suggestion works, if not, I'll try to figure something out for you.
Hi, Thank you for the quick reply. I just the the Lumens might be so bright that the shine from the plastic ball might be picking the image up. But I just discovered something. I am projecting through the correct side that is not frosted fully (front). When I look closer it looks like the front does have some frost…Very thin…You have to get up close to see it, but it is there. Looks like it was done on purpose to make look more magical, I guess. I will try to remove the paint from the front with a thinner. Do you have a recommendation for a spray paint thinner that won’t ruin the clear plastic. I don’t want to make it worse. Thank you kindly for your help.
@@johnburgos1073 You can use 70% isopropyl alcohol on the plastic, this should remove any residue or slight bit of paint without ruining the plastic. However, test a small area 1st before using it all over, just to be sure. ***Make sure to use 70% only not anything higher percentage or it will damage the plastic.*** Again, test a small area 1st that won't be noticed if it does ruin the plastic before putting it all over. This is great, how did you take the UA-cam video and turn it into loop? I can do everything else but I’m not too good with these techie parts. And you mention you used some software to make it the right size. What are those too ? Thank you in advance.
If you follow my link in the description, you can just download the looping video from my website. However, if you are trying to change it with the original, I used VLC Media player. It's free to download, and what I had available at the time. However, any media editing software should do.
Wow this was an awesome video . I always was wanting to learn how to make this project and projection of this project . this will be my winter 2021 activity to make . thank you for this amazing video as i saved it to my favorites . question is a plastic ball better to use then a glass one i am thinking the glass ball would reflect exterior light from the projection and of course the candle shining would cause the projection to not be so clear. . not sure to go with glass or plastic. awesome job .
Thank you for the compliment, mine is plastic and I have not tried glass. Glass I think would be easier to clean and keep clear, but of course you risk it breaking if it falls.
Would be nice to find the Madam Leota from 2006 movie to change things up a bit. She was pretty funny and said a lot more. I used your suggestions with a 16" globe and foam head and small projector. Looks and sounds great. Rather than continuous looping when there is no one watching it, it would be nice to emply a motion sensor. But doing that with a projector seems unlikely because of the setup sequence one must go through to get to, open and launch the files. Thx for the insight.
Thank you Gypsy Moon Tarot, I appreciate the compliment. As far as projecting from the below/beneath uses a technique that uses mirrors in a periscoping fashion. I have seen others use it on other videos, but have not tried it myself. The projection technique worked well enough for me and I have not had time to try the periscope method. Although, it would solve the issue of the refection of the projection on the crystal ball. So if you look at some other DIY videos some use this method. Here is an example of what I mean, this guy uses this method, but it is pretty entailed. I was pressed for time when I created the illusion and didn't have time to do it. Hope this helps! ua-cam.com/video/trboU9aouAY/v-deo.html
Great video and thank you for sharing! Was thinking about maybe following your lead... Is there a size of globe that you would recommend to fit the dummy head inside... Also do you think plastic or glass would be better? Cheers!
Thanks, the size of the globe I used is approximately 12inches in diameter, give or take, and the opening for the wig head is about 9inches, I used plastic just because it is what I had at the time and it is lighter and more durable. However, glass may be easier to project through. Would love to see your end result, have fun with it. Happy Halloween!
@@Vincent_Serpico Thanks a lot!! I might be a bit late this season but hoping to try in time... I always loved this at Disneyland.... Yours had been the best recreation I have seen...Will send you update if I can get it done in time or next year for sure.... Thanks again!!
HEY VINCE... AWESOME!!! Thank you for posting this. Wondering, Im going to build it from scratch so WHAT SIZE is the Acrylic ball across? and what size s the opening?
Thanks John, the globe I used is approximately 12inches in diameter, give or take, and the opening for the wig head is about 9inches. However, as you can see from my video, I reused a mechanical witch head prop that I was able to purchase cheap. Those are not always available to use and can get expensive. I have not tried it myself but I know others have used light acrylic globe lamp covers. A normal styrofoam wig head is about 5.5 inches across so the opening needs to be at least that, but it would be safer if it were around 6 or 6.5". Sometimes you can find these types of globes at hobby shops and the like. Hope this helps let me know if you have any other questions. Also, I love seeing end results. If you can shoot me a quick video through my email: DocHollidaysGameEmporium@gmail.com.
I don't have a direct link for you. If you get on ebay, there are several listed, unfortunately they run from around $65-$100. I don't believe the Company (Gemmy) makes them anymore. I was lucky and found mine on a garage sale site and picked it up for about $50.00. I'm not sure why they are listed this high? Could be because it is not close to Halloween? Another option is to use a clear plastic lamp bowl with an opening like the witch head crystal ball. I found this one on ebay that would probably be close to what you need. (171150625307). Just put that number in the ebay search engine. Otherwise you could visit a craft store like Hobby Lobby or Michaels. Some times they carry similar lamp bowls that can serve the same purpose as the crystal ball. Hope this helps.

Hello again! I just finished the fake book projector box for this project. Did you need to create venting for the projector? Doesn’t it get hot in the box?
Glad to hear your project is coming along. I do not have any ventilation in my set up. The projector I used seem to be ok without it. However, having said that I know you probably have a different projector. I would just test it out for a bit, if you notice it getting too hot then ventilation holes may need to be made.
It depends on the foam wig head you buy, the one I used did not need to be trimmed, but I know that others come with a larger base for balance. The neck itself should not be larger than the head, but if it is for some reason and you can't fit it in, taking a bit off should not ruin the effect.
Its Wayne again. Still working on the project. Questions your projector in your video does it have keystone? And who was the manufacturer, the make, any info so I can find it. I like its size and I see them on website but when it gets here its bigger and will not fit in the box. Thank you
@waynesmith3427 Wayne, when I created this project I was not trying to break the bank so the projector i used was a small generic one. You can find them on ebay for around $40.00. The important part is to make sure you either have a usb or micro SD slot so you can loop your video. I suggest one that is 1080dpi, to answer your question about keystone, no, mine did not have that , so it's not really necessary. Here is a ebay number to a similar projector that I had used, but as I said any should work that is small enough. EBAY# 296646915785, hope this helps, let me know.

How did you solve for the blue halo projecting behind the globe? Did you just tease the hair big enough to catch it all or was there another trick. I’m about 40 inches away using your video download and I do notice a large blue around the back wall. Haven’t played with the hair yet but trying to make sure I go in the right direction.
Michael, you may have to play with the distance a bit. 40 inches was approximate, so you may need to move it up or back a little. I'm not sure how big you have the hair around your wig head, but I would try to have it fill as much of the inside of the crystal ball as you can. This should help with cancelling out the outer rim of the projection. However, it may also be the type of projector your using, all are a bit different. Let me know if this helps.

@allaboutthemagic9617 A 10 inch will work, but you will have to scale everything down a bit, and I'm not sure if your opening will be big enough for a full sized mannequin head. You may need to find something smaller.

I am trying to do a more custom version of this for our home attraction this year (it’s our 30th anniversary)…… I wanted to film either myself or one of my grandsons and have us lead a seance in a seance room. 2 Questions - 1) do you have any experience making your own videos? 2) Any advice on how to do this attraction with a thin shell head and a projector inside of it? Thanks , Sal Calta
Thanks for the compliment on my prop. To answer your 1st question, yes, I do have some experience, not professional level by any means, but some. As far as the 2nd question, give me a few more details about what you are trying to do. Do you have the thin shell head already? I believe in order to get the effect you want, you may need to use a periscoping technique. I originally was going to use this technique for my prop, but abandoned it because it entails more setup to achieve the effect, and I was limited on time. However, in theory it eliminates the projector having to project the image from outside the head or crystal ball. Can you send me a few pics of what you have or what you are trying to achieve. No, sorry to hear that. The one I used seem to be pretty clear. I did have to increase the focus to the max for it to be clear. You may have to actually adjust the distance of the projector slightly since you are using a projector that is not the same. I assumed that most of these were pretty universal as far as the clarity. However, it is a cheaper projector. Try moving it slightly forward or back and see if it does the sharpen your picture a bit. I had to do trail and error with the video in order to achieve the correct distance I wanted. Let me know if this helps. If not let me know and I will try to trouble shoot with you.
Thrash, make sure your video on the USB is at least or higher than the resolution of your projector and both are the highest resolution you can get. When projecting an image, the resolution drops as the projection size gets larger and most projectors will try to fill in the image of it is lower resolution than the equipment, making for pixilation.
To all, I accidently erased someone's comment when I was attempting to answer it. I apologize. If you did not get an answer from me about your question, please just repost it. The person commenting stated that they had just bought a crystal ball with a custom 10" bottom, if that helps. Sorry again.
Sorry for the delayed response, if you have a shorter distance to work with try half the size. There is not really a formula for it. More trial and error, also will depend on if you are using a similar projector or something different. Try reducing by half then work your way up or down on your Madame Leota face. Let me know if that works, if not I'll try to figure out a better solution for you.

Any info would be helpful, thank you
Building one right now. Thank you for your advice and the in depth video. So awesome!

Fantastic!!! thanks for sharing
Wow this is the coolest thing ever. My cousin is having a the same themed wedding lol. She would love this!
Great tutorial. Very well done.
You are extremely talented ! This is awesome 👏🏼
Thank you very much, I appreciate it😊
This is amazing! I got my hands on the same animatronic crystal ball. How did you separate the base from the ball to swap out the head? Thank you!
It's been awhile since I actually did separate the two. I believe there were a few screws that I had to undo, but I will check for you. I actually have found a couple of these animatronics during the off season and was able to get them for a good price. I'll take a look and let you know for sure, unless you have figured it out by the time you get my message.
Thank you! I found 1 tiny screw and took it out but the glove is still not budging from the base. I’m afraid to break it by forcing it. If you happen to figure it out. Please let me know! :)

Hello Vincent could you please provide a link for a crystal ball or the size of crystal ball used?
@@plantspace the crystal ball itself has about a 12 inch diameter, with a 9 inch opening. Like I describe in my tutorial, I repurposed a Halloween Prop. Unfortunately, those particular ones are getting harder to find and when u do they tend to be a bit expensive. A suggestion that I have wo in old be to go to the hobby shops in your area and see if you could find something that would work or try a lamp globe, the sell them on Ebay and amazon.
Very cool!!!!
Hi,
I came across your video and was immediately inspired to try it.
Hi,
Thank you for the quick reply.
WOW this amazing and so helpful! i want to project this for halloween! I was thinking of using a sheet and putting it on the 2nd floor but I might try this instead
Thanks Vincent for the inspiration to make even cooler displays for my Haunted Mansion Theme Halloween
Nice job!
Wow great work 🤗💜 I would think they would sell them by now . I would of thought hollagrams would be in out houses by now im 2024
@VampDaVegan Thank you and yes I would have thought so too by now!
@Vincent_Serpico strange isn't it 🤔
Wow this was an awesome video .
That would be a nice change, I'll have to look into getting some of that video, and adding motion sensor would be great for displays!
Awesome job!!! 👏 love you arcade collection too 😉. I was wondering how to accomplish projecting from below/beneath the crystal ball?

Do you have a link or direction to where you grabbed the crystal ball? Cant find it anywhere. Thanks!
I would get a fish bowl from a craft store and get a bowl stand that fits.
@@Vincent_Serpico Any ideas for what to search? Couldn’t find anything
@@dannyx3883 did you see my reply from a couple of weeks ago when you asked? I put an eBay number to enter into your search, that should be an alternative to use for a crystal ball.

What did you use to clean off the paint on the ball?
Hello again! I just finished the fake book projector box for this project. Did you need to create venting for the projector? Doesn’t it get hot in the box?
Glad to hear your project is coming along. I do not have any ventilation in my set up. The projector I used seem to be ok without it. However, having said that I know you probably have a different projector. I would just test it out for a bit, if you notice it getting too hot then ventilation holes may need to be made.
Did you have to trim the neck portion of the foam head in order to fit in the crystal ball?

You did I great Job, I worked at Disneyland for years and each year I do up my home and this year I will be doing Madame Leota. The only difference is I'm making a cast mold of my wife's face because she will be playing the role. It will line up with her features. I have the sound track with out any sound effects and I also have the background sound and effects so it sould work out well. I will post it for 2024 Halloween at majorvideoinc there you can see what I did in past years.... keep it up, You are very creative.
@waynesmith3427 Thank you sir, I would love to see the outcome of the mold you make for your wife and the end result of course. I will definitely keep an eye out for your post. Thank you for the compliment, it means a lot. Especially, coming from someone who worked for Disney.
HI! Your Madame Leota is awesome! How do I download the projection video onto a USB stick to use in the projector?
Thank you Erin for the compliment. To download the video, just follow the link in my description which will take you to my website. Hit the link, which is the crystal ball, and download the zip file. It may a take a bit to download. Once downloaded, unzip the file, you should see an mp4. Then just save it to a thumb drive. Let me know if it does not work for you for any reason. I am finding that the Firefox browser messes the link up sometimes, it is best to use chrome.
What type of device did you use to run the loop? That hooks into the projector? SD card? USB
I used a usb flash drive. Just put the loop file on the drive. Make sure it is the only one on it. That way it will autoloop just that file.
I wonder it this could be done with peppers ghost effect
I'm sure you could, but I found that the projection made for a clearer image on Madame Leota's face.
Where did you get the box looks like books?
I had puchased mine at TJ Max after Halloween and they had everything discounted. Look at any hobby or craft store in your area, like Michaels or a Hobby Lobby. Otherwise you can find them on ebay, but they are generally overpriced. You can use a similar bookbox, it does not have to be exactly like mine. Hope this helps.

I know it’s been a while, but I wonder if you might give information or links about what projector to use. It looks like there’s no working link, and I would love to do this this year.
This is a link to a similar one. However, you can buy a more expensive one if you would like. It all depends on your budget. Sorry for the delayed response, I actually just used VLC Media player. You can watch a tutorial on how to edit your video. However, at the time I was pressed to get this project done. I'm sure there are others out there , that may be easier to use.

As far as the crystal ball, I used a Halloween prop that they used to make that had a moving witch head in it, as seen in the video. However, you can substitute the plastic crystal ball with an Acrylic Clear Plastic Round Globe Lamp Light Fixture, the size depends on how big your going to make your prop. You can find them on ebay.
We only have a 10” globe, would this work?
@allaboutthemagic9617 A 10 inch will work, but you will have to scale everything down a bit, and I'm not sure if your opening will be big enough for a full sized mannequin head. You may need to find something smaller.
Vincent - great prop and great video - thanks.
I'll do some brainstorming and try to come up with something for you.

Did you run into any issues with the mini projector ...got one that looks identical to yours but having issues were the projection is pixelated
I probably only have about 20 inches away to work with… how much smaller does the video have to be? Or larger? How does that work?
Sorry for the delayed response, if you have a shorter distance to work with try half the size. There is not really a formula for it. More trial and error, also will depend on if you are using a similar projector or something different. Try reducing by half then work your way up or down on your Madame Leota face. Let me know if that works, if not I'll try to figure out a better solution for you.
Were you able to resize the video for the 20 inches?
I bought the 14” ball and a foam head- but the head seems too big. Was your ball bigger?
Sorry for the late response, been busy today, I'll have to measure the one I used and get back with you tomorrow with the measurements.
I measured mine and it seems to be maybe an inch more in diameter. What type of ball did you end up buying?
So when you took apart the spirit ball was the witch trashed?
No, actually it came out pretty easy, I actually kept it, may use it in a future project.
So what was your base? Didn’t you use the legs?
Do you have a pic of the base
Or did you just use the ball?
@@KelseyKraemer if you watch the video from the 8:30 mark you can see how I made the base. I used the legs from the witch ball and then cut a piece of wood for the stand.
What's the diameter on that ball?
It is about a 12 inch diameter, with a 9 inch opening.
Must the candle holders be amber?
No, you can use clear or any other color. The main use of the lights is to mask the projector reflection. The holders are just to add to the effect.
I want to make one of these, u have the supplies/directions on how to do it?
Sorry Jacob, I'm not quite understanding your question? Do you mean do I have links to the supplies used? The tutorial explains the process.

I know some have found other things to use for the crystal ball, like a clear globe lamp replacement, you just need to make sure the neck opening is wide enough to fit your Madame Leota head through or if it's made from plastic you may be able to just widen the neck entrance.
What size wood did you use to add to the stand?

Aerial Sean the items that I used are no longer available, but I have given you 3 links to similar items. If you have a hobby shop in your area, these items are generally available there, some times for cheaper. The camera I used was a generic one from the internet. I was trying to keep my costs low. The link I provided is to a similar camera. Keep in mind that you can get a higher end camera, but if your using my video, you may have to play with the focus and distance a bit. Let me know if you have any other questions or issues if you are making your own Madame Leota. I'd love to see how your project turns out. Thanks again.

@@Vincent_Serpico Ive already made and have used my own ML for years but need to update it a bit. Did the same thing with the foam head and plaster. Unfortunately I was only able to find a round fishbowl which had a flat bottom. A full size projector, positioned about 6 feet away, hiding in a wooden crate. Still came out good but her face was a little fuzzy. Hoping your friend’s video is a little bit clearer. The video I used was similar but it was the green halo version instead of the blue one. The projector I have now you can only hook up a laptop to it. Which is why I asked about yours so I can use a memory stick.
@@Vincent_Serpico what size projector is yours and what size is the fake book box in order to fit it in?
@@Kana7782 I have attached a link to the same type of book box that I used. I found mine at a hobby store after Halloween so it was discounted to around $20.00. Unfortunately, this one is on ebay and the seller wants quite a bit more. However, this should give you the dimensions. As far as the projector the link I sent, I believe, has the dimensions as well. This was close to size, price, and quality that I used with mine. Hope this helps.

@@Vincent_Serpico I found some mini projectors on Amazon. Are you able to hook up external speakers to it and how do you program it to play/loop? (Even after the 30 minute video is done)
So how do you create a loop? My technical partner is now in basic training 😁
All you should have to do is put the video file on a USB or SD card, depending on what you will be using in your projector, as long as it is the only video file on the USB it should automatically loop once you start playing it.
What projector off of eBay?
Hi Kandy, the projector that I used is not listed on ebay anymore, but this item #393299583250, is almost the same type that you need. Any one similar to it will work too. It just depends on how much you want to spend. This one, like the one I purchased, runs about $40.00. Hope this helps, any other questions, feel free to ask. Also, if you create your own Madame Leota display, I'd love to see it. Thanks
the video you show to use is locked how can i get the video. please help
Sorry about that, when you say it's locked, do you mean it will not download or you are unable to play it?
@@Vincent_Serpico can not download ..do u happen to have a copy I could get. Making a haunted mansion escape room
Yes, but let me check my website when I get home. If you are having trouble downloading it I'll still need to fix it. Once it's fix you should have no issue downloading it. However, if for some reason that does not work I'll figure out a way to get you a copy.
Laura, I tested my site and was able to download and open the file? Are you downloading my file from my site? Here is the link, let me know if it does not work for you again.

@@Vincent_Serpico the problem is i can download , but it opens on web to play, i need to just play a loop off of projector like you did, can you send the file thru email. no matter what i do to save the video it opens online.
I thought it robot head ,but it's hologram ?
It's a projection onto a molded face, similar to a hologram, but not quite.
Dude, you have a child who is old enough to be married? Give us a tutorial on how you stay looking so young.
Lol...thank you for the compliment, Ken. Well i do have a bit of Romanian in my family tree, perhaps I have a bit of vampire gene that keeps me looking young. Happy Halloween!
Ooooooh I want to make one with a sassy black woman talking smack like Wanda Sykes ripping on everyone coming in.
LOL
Don't you own the haunted mansion rental home?
No, sorry that is not me.
I love it so average to the original
You look like Keanu Reeves
Thanks for the compliment😉
This looks great! Would love the haunted mansion holiday version of her. 💕💕
Thank you for the compliment, however I am a bit embarrassed to say I'm not familiar with the holliday version. Could you give me a reference to that. Thanks!!!
In Disneyland they do a nightmare before Christmas holiday overlay. There's many videos on UA-cam. You should check it out. 👍🏻
@@kristinmoore4624 thanks, I had no idea. I've never been to the Haunted Mansion during Christmas, so I will definitely look it up!
Omg I really thought u were Keanu Reeves 😭
8:57, Hitler Lol!
Lol...had to take a second look, lol...not what I was going for, but yes I see it.
