  • Michael Crockett is one of thousands of servicemen and women who've been asked to leave the military due to downsizing and sequestration. Michael had hoped to dedicate 20 to 30 years of his life to serving his country, but like so many, his dream of retiring from military service will go unfulfilled.

I’’m not a transition expert, yet, many ex-military have transferred their years in service to a new, yet, related GS position. You’ll go in with near 15 years of combined service towards a future government retirement.

This is not Michael's fault but around 2003 we had a group of 2nd classes that didn't want to take certain assignments and didn't want to study for advancement commands at the local level probably could have taken care of some of the issues but big Navy stepped in sailors have to realize you have to hit the books your brothers in the Marines have only to shots at the staff nco board after the second shot it's back to the house the army you have 2 shots at the board for staff sergeant the 2nd time it's back to the house the Navy as long as you are eligible for the advancement test you can take it they have the study time now I never had before these are some of the factors that created the"big Navy downsizing" you have the advance to position program, the meritorious advancement program there is no more E-3 test and the 3rd class test is gone a lot of qualifications you had to do years ago you don't no longer required to do now so why is the Navy advancement stagnant? The Coast Guard it's up are out the Navy you got 16 years to make first class without the drama others had Hit the Books

My buddy who I served with was involuntary seperated during Obama's Administration in 2012. He already had 13 years of active duty service and was discharged as an E-6 1st Class Petty Officer, he had to sell his 5 bedroom house, all his cars and his wife didnt work & left California back to his home state in the midwest, the Navy did not help him transition at all just gave him a little seperation money and told him to use his GI bill for school and that was it, luckily after a long struggle, he and his wife are working raising their four kids, but their standard of living is not like when he was still active duty getting all those great benefits.

only thing i can say in move on from it and if you expect an answer they are not going to give it to you. The Navy is what it is. You are a gear on the wheel once they feel they don't need you they replace you, It is what it is

CB1942EO My husband has Re 3 under qmp making it to where he can’t get back in without a waiver... permanent other wise and it also means you have to payback involuntary separation pay if you do get back in or file for any VA disability Oh yeah, and if you get a government job... you have to buy back the time for service in order to recoup for retirement... the government is not right at all. This happens to e-6 and above

It’s disgusting. Fell victim to it also. Joined in 1999 there was none of this PTS, 3 PFA Failure bullshit. It’s all about cutting you out of a retirement check.

not to be the assholes here and I agreed them separating them right before his retirement date is pretty sleazy, but I was trying to take a look at his collar see what rank he was it look like he was a MA2 and after 14 years even with all those combinations that's not that great.. with the hardware he's got on his chest he definitely should be a MAC.. maybe that's why they decided to separate him he couldn't make rank because of poor exam results..

    • @ranchero7406

1:55 Actually he is an E-6 paygrade, Master at Arms 1st Class with 14 years and 11 months- Time in Service, E-6s can retire with full benefits at 20 years and can now stay up to 22 years, he should have been given other opportunities if his rating was simply overmanned or be allowed to transition to the reserve force. Now in 2019, The Navy is doing the opposite and trying to retain sailors, unfortunately Mr, Crockett was discharged without retirement benefits, but looks like he has attained his master's degree and transitioned to civilian life successfully. Bravo Zulu to him
