The hardest part for me was understanding that I wasn't in a platoon anymore. That the formations, the strict duty officers, chow halls, the barracks and guard duty in the middle of the night had ended. Instead of moving around with a bunch of guys everywhere I went, I would be moving around alone.

Man, I can definitely empathize with this feeling.

I accidentally changed my phone number when I retired. I took one week of terminal leave then started work. I did not know anyone in the company, no secret public fraternities, and no college degree.

I can tell yah for someone who is 3 months away separating. 3 college degrees and a great civilian background as well with my military. I am still having hard time trying to find a job!! I’m scared! It’s rough out there!

The economy is not the greatest right now, but what type of jobs are you targeting and how are you networking to get in front of the right people?

Great video! The military transition process is complicated, especially the benefits and financial aspects.

SPOT ON! When I got out, I had saved over $30K so I was ready IF I did not get a job soon after that. Your first year will be the toughest; loss of contact with your unit, loss of comradery, and most of all, loss as to what the REAL world is about. Civilians have a different outlook on life and other stuff so just play things quiet and lose. I would also consider the guard/reserves. 1 weekend a month, two weeks Active Duty. after 20 "good years" ( Active Duty counts ), you can draw a retirement pension. I left in 1989, returned for Desert Storm and did the rest in the Naval Reserves. At 60, I started to draw my retirement....Tricare for life....$25 a month for my wife and I, monthly pension of $1600 AFTER taxes.

Finding a job after your service is the biggest concern I have but I already know I wanna do software engineering, but still, I don’t know everything and I can only over prepare before anything right guys ?! And i aspire to pursue stand up comedy more financially stable this time so the grind can be a lot more balanced than working certain jobs while New York rent is too high. I wanna be financially good while pursuing stand up comedy after the military if I decide to go!

Great tips!! would you be interested in linking up to do a show or two? I run the @retire_army podcast and trying to do some shorter content like this with my cohost. Let me know if you would like to collaborate. 🎉
