A role model is an example of a person that someone should aspire to. But good advice/lessons can come from anywhere.
His brother is not a role.model, that's literally what he's trying to say "you're better then me, act like it"

They got this from a real-life story. I can't find their names, but it was two brothers, very similar situation. Sadly, the older brother never made it out of the prison. Died after getting jumped and stabbed to death from someone who mistaken him for another man. Shame too because that older brother had actually been given an early release and waiting on the paperwork to go through.
The younger brother did turn his life around but only after his brother died in prison. Later he had a son who we named after his older brother. He's still married and doing very well for himself to this day.

As a bus driver in the 70's, I drove a bus load of bad ass, tough talking teenagers from Oakland, CA to San Quentin for a program called Scared Straight. Noisy and loud and cussing on the trip over....you could have heard a pin drop on the way back. As we were about to depart, one of the kids started to smart off.... the entire bus shouted him down and sounded like we were in church! I believed that the message took root they way they were after.

He may not have made the best choices, and his brother may not be looking at the right qualities in his older brother, but that older brother is a good role model by simply telling his brother the reality of the situation he's in. To teach him to be better.

I love that the older brother knows the difference between respect and fear. You can rule with both, but they are not the same thing. Case in point, when the riot happens in this same prison later this episode, Nolan swears to the brother he'll protect Hector and get him to safety. He does, earning the older brothers respect. That respect then allows him, Harper, and the Warden to walk out of the prison untouched by the other inmates, due to the older brother's say so.

      @duskshadow25 3 місяці тому

@@Valentinathevamp Valentina, even after your mom passes away, which one day we all will, please consider keep living your life. I promise you life gets better if you give it enough time, even if it may seem there is no light at the end of the tunnel, because I was in the same position as you. My life isn't perfect by any mean, but it has improved a lot when I look back at it 10 years ago.
It took me probably 8 years to finish college just to get my bachelor because I didn't give a crap back then, and I was super depressed and just wanted to escape reality and die somewhere. But I eventually realized that I couldn't just kept living my life like that, and I had to do something about it if I wanted to make a change. I didn't graduate with a high GPA, and I actually graduated with only 2.5GPA. But I was still happy that I finished college, even though I had constant doubt if I was even going to make it.
Then after I graduated, it was probably hundreds of failed interviews and no response from applying jobs because I had no experience. What I want to say is that, life is always a constant uphill and it's a bitch. But I met a lot of people along the way and they were all struggling in their own ways. Some of them may be worse than you and some of them may be doing better than you, but the point is that everyone struggle with their own problem.
You can have all the money in the world, but it doesn't mean you're happy with your life. Materialistic things can only go so far in life. Once you have 5 houses, 5 cars, 5 boats, etc., there's not much else to keep buying, so this is where helping the other less fortunate comes in. What I can tell you is that gratification and happiness of helping others is something definitely rewarding. I'm not talking about rewarding as in they give you money in return or something, but I'm talking about you making a difference in their life and you see them wanting to change and do better than they were yesterday.
If you just set a small goal for yourself and slowly work toward that goal, you will reach there eventually. Remember to never give up. Because once you give up, there's no progress whatsoever. Once you achieved your small goal, you can then work on another one and eventually set a big goal for yourself for long term and work towards that (i.e. purchasing a car, house, etc.). It may seem very far or even impossible, but if other people can do it, then so can you. The only difference is that they put in more time and effort than you did.
Find your passion, Valentina. If you don't know what you like, try it. Then you'll know if you like it or not, similar to tasting a food for the first time. And I promise you, you are not alone, because there are a lot of people out there experiencing similar problems as you, if not worse.
"Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid." - Albert Einstein

Sometimes a prisoner can give great advice to their family or friends so they never end up behind bars. Despite being a criminal they can give great advice to you even if they have to isolate themselves from family and friends in order to protect them. They may be murderers but some of them are not stupid. I should know I have a cousin whose been behind bars for drug abuse and he did serve his time and as of right now he's been rehabilitated and sober for a more years than I could count and he's got a wife and kids. Sometimes prison or interventions can really change you and maybe even give you a chance at being born again.

After working in a jail for several years, this scene can be fairly accurate with how convicts think of their families, especially younger siblings.

I hitch hiked 2,000 miles away and continued learning my first profession as a carpenter. I had $5 when I hit town, and worked hard, buying my first car a year later. Police were constantly trying to find a reason to arrest me for made up reasons, like they had a profit incentive to arrest me, put me through the system, pay for their overtime.
I am not supportive of those who hate on police officers. But if I had a young son moving toward his teen years, (besides raising him well, being an example), I would make a point of getting involved with the police, doing research, do they frivolously arrest teen boys. It was my experience that many police officers seem to want to train youth to be criminals.

My big brother ran the streets his whole life, got locked up and did a combined 17 years in prison, which up until the point he got out had been my whole life throughout my childhood he made it his mission to keep me as far from the “family business” as possible I mean literally put the fear of god in me to stay out of trouble, he died a few years ago from cancer and I remember one of our last conversations where I told him how I was bitter that thugs and inmates got more time with my brother than me, he paused for a min and then told me “the best thing I ever did for you as a brother..was get locked tf up” this scene gives me that exact energy and honestly brought a tear out of me💯 sorry for the long comment just had to get it out

As a person who suffered a lot from just getting far too close to going to juvenile, I BEG YOU, do NOT let your anger get control over you. I was sent away from my family and home. You know what that means? It means no freedom. No comfort. And no love from others. I’m back home and I’m NEVER making that mistake again ( the mistake is personal).
