  • For those who would like to go-beyond Chrysler public relations rhetoric, and learn the truth about that company's historical thru current approach to safety, I recommend that you download/read the letter I wrote to Attorney General Janet Reno in October 1999:
    www.pvsheridan....
You might wish to review the COLORED TAB and TAB 27 as a quick introduction. This readership will introduce you to the stark reality behind the PR machinations about "meets or exceeds all applicable federal safety standards."

I grew up in these old Chrysler minivans. I still remember my old man telling me not to fucking! Touch that shift lever when he's gone or else your gonna take a shit beating!

Its totally their fault. If they added the interlock in the first place then the vans wouldnt move. Kids are curious and wont always know what their doing and sense their so short most kids cant reach the brake and pull the lever too. This could have prevented alot of deaths if they added this safety feature in the first place.

I only leave my keys in the ignition when the vehicle is attended by someone who also has a driver's license and is in position to gain control of the vehicle if that happens .

My 1999 Town & Country doesn't have the shift interlock and i always use the emergency brake no matter where im at incase it does come out of gear..Chrysler may deny the fact about the issue but i truly believe that you shouldn't leave your kids unattended in the van. why on gods earth would you let your kid in the van to play a cd knowing 9 times out of 10 she might end up touching something in the van that she shouldn't.

My mother had a 1994 Chrysler Concorde without the shift interlock. I was born in ‘95 and was never left alone in the car until I was like 13. She kept the car many years until 2016

I told my mom about this since she used to have 1997 Dodge Caravan that was until 2007 when we got a Honda Odyssey. She was honestly kind of surprised by the dangers of it. I even showed her how the 1996 Dodge Caravan did POOR in the IIHS Crash Tests and the occupant compartment collapsed trapping the dummy. She was said “this was probably why they switched to the Honda Odyssey because it did good in the crash tests and were known to be safe cars. My moms Dodge Caravan also had a lot of front end issues with it and my parents had to put s couple grand into fixing the suspension and radiators as well as other front end problems. That’s also why they switched to Honda and has had a Honda car ever since. She had her 2008 Honda Odyssey since 2007 until 2014 when she traded it in for a 2015 Honda Odyssey. She then traded that in 2018 for a 2019 Honda CRV and drove that until 2021 when she got a 2021 Honda Pilot.
My aunt also had a 2008 Honda Odyssey which replaced her 2002 Ford Explorer. Unfortunately hers was totaled when she tried to turn left and a 2003 Chevy Caviler hit her head on, because she misjudged how far she drifted and accidentally drifted into the oncoming traffic. I remember the Cavalier did POOR in the IIHS crash tests too and the dummy was trapped and occupant compartment collapsed. The guy in the Cavalier was also trapped in his car and suffered a broken femur, broken leg, and broken arm. Firefighters had to cut the roof of the car off to get at him and paramedics airlifted him. Meanwhile my aunt was able to walk away from her Honda Odyssey and only suffered from soreness mostly because her car turned left very violently at 90°. However knowing that if that was my mom who got into that crash with her Dodge Caravan haunts me because she definitely would’ve been severely injured.

If I were in a leadership position at Chrysler, I wouldn’t say that after just having to recall thousands of Jeep Cherokees and Grand Cherokees to retrofit them with brake-shift interlock just because of a design-related safety defect.

It's scary because a lot of vehicles actually have a disengage device in the ignition for the Brake Interlock Device. I have a 2003 Grand Cherokee and a 2001 Malibu in which both you can flip the key to the first notch before the ON position and it allows you to pull it into gear without hitting the brakes. Chevrolet and Chrysler did this purposely as a mechanism for easy towing so you can easily put it in Neutral. Convenient in a sense but moreso scary for kids.

I think it’s more of an issue with minivans because they tend to be “family cars” where one or multiple young children will be present. Where as a Honda Civic is less likely to be a family vehicle PLUS in minivans of that era, you could walk without much obstruction from the backseat to the driver and/or passenger seats. That’s how the boy was probably able to leave his seat and head out after his mom, consequently grabbing the gear shift. In a Honda Civic, it’s difficult if not impossible for passengers in the rear to exit into the front of the vehicle. Not to say it COULDNT happen, or that even kids couldn’t reach over and grab the gearshift on the floor but with the center console, it’s highly unlikely. With the minivan you have a door on ONE side, the passenger side, and open floor plan making it easy for passengers to leave the rear and enter the front of the vehicle, it’s more likely a kid would follow a parent out the drivers side door being the easiest, shortest route. In a Honda civic, it would be easier for a kid to just unbuckle the seatbelt and exit via the rear doors. It’s a totally different situation than a minivan. When I was a kid, my grandfather had a 15 passenger van for the longest time. And there was a clear walkway from the the rear area to the driver’s side and passenger side areas. Normally on trips we’d set a big cooler which still wouldn’t stop us from stepping over it to get out. The rear area had one sliding door on the passenger side and two swing doors in the back cargo area. At one point the sliding door became damaged and it took a lot of force to slide it closed and make sure it was latched properly. Sometimes to save time, if it was just me and my grandparents, I would just get in via the front passenger side door and head to the back passenger area. I’ve even walked up and exited via the driver side vehicle though I was old enough to know not the touch the gear shift. But if I recall, we had a ford econoline van and it did have Break Shift Interlock so it wasn’t an issue but I still knew not to mess with the gear shifter unless instructed to do so.

How can a responsible adult driver not be smart enough to apply the emergency brake when parked on even the slightest incline? That is a safety feature of long ago!!! No matter what or how many additional safety features are added will not supplement the lack of intelligence of an owner operator of any given vehicle!! Unless the emergency brake is vacuum released automatically there is no justification therein.

Chrysler didn't even have a Park position on its cars until after 1964. Shift locks didn't become law until 2005. If you learned to drive a manual transmission, you knew about the the Parking Brake. Jill Claybrooke is the Auto Nanny or Airbag Nazi. She was behind the push to the air bags after telling people for years all you needed was safety belts. Using the Parking Brake would have stopped everyone of the accidents or incidents.

Not investing $9 in a bit to prevent accidents? That cheapness is like deciding to buy condoms after having sexy time. Is it just me or are Chrysler just committed to passing off piles of rubbish as a family of fine cars?
I’ve read UA-cam comments from people claiming to be Chrysler mechanics who themselves don’t recommend their own vehicles. My mother owned a Plymouth Acclaim for about a year and a half and it was equally rubbish. Broke down frequently. 🚗

    Hey more.
    All cars can kill.
The problem is the nut behind wheel.
You don't leave kids in a car alone.
You don't leave the keys in the car.
You don't leave a vehicle without putting on the emergency brake. If you want to use a vehicle, any vehicle you need to take a class in common sense. Insurance covers vehicles even the vehicle s of stupid people.
