If you clicked on this video then you’ve probably heard about Apple’s Wheel Kit that they’re selling for $700, which is pretty shocking considering you’d be spending the same amount on four metal wheels, as on an iPhone 11. So what are these wheels for? Well, they’re designed to be used with the Mac Pro in order to make it more portable. Whether that means moving it around a studio or moving it across town, rolling the 39-pound Mac Pro is much easier than picking it up and lugging it around. But you guys won't have the wheels. These wheels are more than just wheels. They are Apple wheels. I don't know about you, but I'll never buy anything that doesn't have Apple in front of it. I bought the wheels as soon as I got the money for it. I'm still saving for the Mac pro though. I'm hoping three years from now they'll still be available.

I agree that low cost devices can make a bad impact on Apple’s luxury brand but if you think that those devices are just for getting them inside their ecosystem. When they are in the ecosystem, people usually buy more Apple products.

What do you mean that there is only one options for Mac Pro wheels? I can go to my local hardware store and pick up some wheels for like a dollar a piece. Given, they might not fit as well but I don’t think that they’re “incompatible”.

You have no idea how much accessories cost in other countries. In Serbia, Apple’s case for the iPad is $160. The Smart Keyboard Folio is $350 and the Magic Keyboard for iPad is $620. That’s unbelievable in comparison to our wages, wich average $300/month in this country. Just seems funny to me now that people in the US with twenty times bigger wages complain about accessories that cost so much less… I would be so happy for a $1299 Mac, but iMacs start at $2399 here… It’s VERY TOUGH being an Apple customer in other countries than the US.
Well it is fairly similar in Lithuaniai although not as extreme. Here it is also more expensive than in the US.

It's the same here in India. The import taxes are horribly high, and due to the products being considered as luxury items, a GST of 28% is applied which makes it super expensive.
The funny part is that this doesn't only apply to Apple, but every other electronic appliance which has not been manufactured locally. A horrible example of which is the Xbox Series X, which through direct currency conversion should cost around 37,999 rupees, but after taxes and everything it is 49,999. Which is even more than my dad's salary

There is also a $1500 stand available for each wheel. I do not own the Mac Pro nor its wheels but I do own 2 Apple Mac Pro Wheel Stands.
I use the Apple Magic Keyboard ONLY, and that is not only the design, but the FEELING of typing on that keyboard is really magic. There is no other keyboard I tried, that is even close to that nice typing-feeling.
The "they don't have a choice" is ridiculous. I can make a trolley with a slab of wood and screw four retail wheels on it for a total of 20 bucks tops.

Well explained. However, you missed the biggest reasons of having the well-engineered and high reliability products. Of course one could say well design includes engineering and production as well but the author seems to focus on the aesthetic of the design rather than engineering (and testing) part of the process.
To refute your argument, compare the engineering of the wheels to an iPhone 11. They cost the same.

Also consider that the Mac Pro is a niche product that still costs quite a bit develop while having relatively lower expected sales numbers vs an iMac or Macbook Air laptop. This is why Luxury car manufacturers wt the highest level of luxury like McLaren or Bhugathi charge so much for the supercars because they know they will only sell in small numbers so very high profit margin is key and rich folks tend to be less price conscious. Appke's Pro customers are less price conscious and thus ok with paying more per machine to help cover the R&D costs.

I have the Apple magic keyboard. Even tough the Microsoft isn’t bad the key quality typing the size and the battery duration are killer. They are very very good and the same for the trackpad you can’t have a better trackpads from any manufacturer.
What annoys me with Apple is they would program the iPhone not to recognize 3rd party accessories. I suffered this and some point I gave up on Apple.

Last important thing that I would have mentioned - economies of scale. There is decent investment in design, tooling, production for a product that (in terms of Apple) has an extremely low sales volume.
Why Apple Is Selling $700 Wheels:
Because there are fools who are willing to buy them.
2:06 For comparison, the same amount of money will get you the Corsair K70 RGB, which is a full-size mechanical keyboard with addressable RGB lights, a wrist rest, and 104-key rollover. Or you could buy a similar keyboard from Redragon and have enough left over for an MX Master 3 mouse from Logitech. Expect more price comparisons in the replies to this comment.

It is ridiculous. But, those high-cost items also keep the company flush with cash so they can do the eccentric things that they do. Some of those things are really beneficial to their entire customer base, maybe the entire industry, and wouldn't be possible if the company were running on typical margins. Savvy players of business chess, those guys.
For my perspective even as an app developer. I find Apple really great at creating high quality tools for helping developers bring high quality apps. So I think the same concept goes to its products
