A Smart Switch to Make Your Dumb Fans Smart!

  • In this video I review the TreatLife Ceiling Fan & Light Dimmer Switch. This unit is really 2 switches in one, and uses WiFi to bring a "dumb" pull chain fan under the control of your Smart Home assistant, controlling not only the fan (with 4 speeds), but the light as well (including dimming)!
    Full disclosure: TreatLife sent me this unit in exchange for an honest review. As in all my videos, the opinions reflected herein are unbiased.

    Are these UL and 15 amp rated? I don't see that listed on the website. Not sure you want to install a 2.5 amp rated switch in a 15amp lighting circuit. I see that as a issue with most of these generic smart switches. They are usually made in countries that don't have Standards for electricity or submit them to UL or even ETL for testing.

    Hi. My fan/light switch is a single manual wall switch with 2 sliders, one for the fan, one for the light. When I removed the switch from the wall there was only a single load wire for both. Is there a way to wire this treatlife switch for this setup?

      Yeah, these switches have 2 load wires, one for light, one for fan. Should work

    Thank you for the video! I just install 3 those at my apartment. I have one question, was you able to integrate in home assistant using Local Tuya? I tried but too many Pins I don't know what to choose.

      I believe you can, but I wasn't using Home Assistant when I made this video, and I've since switched away from these. I don't have any to test, unfortunately.

      @@makeitworktech what did you switch to instead? I'm looking to control some pull chain fans with Alexa. Or, would you still recommend this product?

    I’m trying to replace my Casablanca #45E5 switch for my Inteli-touch series fan with a smartswitch.

    This switch is great - now I know they say it wont work with a ceiling fan/light that has its own remote - but will in work if you just dont install the other remote and wire just like you instructed??

    • @makeitworktech
      @makeitworktech  2 роки тому

      I'm not sure, it probably depends on what controls the speed of the fan - the remote or pull-chains. I've only used this on a pull chain fan, but not one with a remote.

      I saw somewhere that this only works with non-smart fans and fans that don't have a separate remote. I believe that it's supposed to be for traditional fan/light fixtures that have pull chains. But you could give it a shot.....

    My room has two flip switches on its own "island." I was wondering if this would work, or If I'd need two separate switches.

    My electrician installed my treatlife switch without telling me that I would not be able to control the lights & fans separately. He said I only have 1 wire that powers my ceiling fan. My ceiling fan has a pull chain to control the fan only. How would I get my switch to control both light and switch independently? It's a single pole switch.

    • @makeitworktech
      @makeitworktech  Рік тому

      Unfortunately there's no easy way to control both separately unless you run a 3 conductor wire. There are smart relays that you can install in your ceiling from companies like Shelly, but if the power goes off to them then they're useless

    What is you have two switches one for the fan and one for the light. And make it just the one. And cover the big hole

      @@makeitworktech doesn't work. You can still control the fan and the light with the TreatLife app and you can add them to Google home, you cannot voice control the fan or the light with Google Assistant, the switches just show up on Google home and you can control them through the app, which is pointless because you control them through the TreatLife app too. I wanted this for Google Assistant control. It just doesn't give you the option. Otherwise the switches are easy to install with the treatife app and easy to install on Google home there's just no functionality for voice control. That's what I bought them for. Suggestions?

    Did you ever try and get these connected to HA?

    • @makeitworktech
      @makeitworktech  2 роки тому

      Yes but they wouldn't show up in the Tuya integration. I have since removed them and went with the Zooz double switch, but these still function better IMO since they can control fan speed as well.

      @@makeitworktech i haven't integrated Z-wave yet, but I am considering adding it just for the leviton or jasco fan control switches. The rooms in question have double gang boxes so adding two switches aren't a problem for me.

      I really like Z-Wave! My Z-Wave network has outgrown my Zigbee network at this point!

    • @7MBoosted
      @7MBoosted 2 роки тому

      @@makeitworktech my only hesitation in adopting z-wave is the $$$, Zigbee tends to be so much less expensive.
      So far, I was given a bunch of tuya wifi stuff as gifts, and that was fun. But I wanted more, and I have just started using HA and Zigbee with an old raspberry pi 3 B+ I had laying around.
      So far, I'm very happy with my decision ☺. Next I might try getting local tuya working with the stuff I have already set up.

    • @makeitworktech
      @makeitworktech  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, that is the problem. Zooz is the cheapest/best value I've found for Z-Wave stuff.
      I started with Tuya as well! Best decision ever to ditch SmartThings and go with Home Assistant.
      I tried local Tuya but it didn't support some of my devices so I just use the default integration and replaced devices with Zigbee or Z-Wave in critical applications
