Big tech (Amazon, Google, etc) pays substantially more. The first guy seemingly works for a big public tech company if he's getting $80k in stock each year.
It's a little bit complex, just because they are all Software Engineers it doesn't mean they all do the same job. These people are hired to perform a specific role and that role is what determines the pay. You can also negotiate your salary which I find really interesting. Being a teacher I can't really do that 😅

It depends on what you actually do in a daily basis, you can work with front end, back end, you could work on apps, maintaining something that already exists or creating something from the very beginning. All of this plays a role in pay.
