The most heartbreaking thing in that bedroom scene that I never noticed until I had rewatched for the millionth time, Karen had worn a red cardigan with red earrings knowing that the necklace would match.
@@HayleyGC great observation
Whr exactly is it shown? I watched the bedroom scene multiple times but I didn't notice.
Uuugh, that seriously makes it so much worse! But yes excellent observation
How would it match. It's golden?
@@aurorerich it has a red stone
Also, the power of a mom to hide all of that raw pain and wrap the kids in big love when your heart has just been crushed. Incredible

The most difficult thing is to continue treating their cheater father with respect and love that he doesn't deserve, only for their own good.
The bedroom scene! What a wonderful! Emma Thompson acting is superb, no scream, no break things, the way she fixes the blanket, pure acting ❤
No one can cry like Emma - did you see her and Anthony Hopkins in “Remains of the Day”? Superb ❤
@@kikeara It echoed her real life when her first husband cheated she was devastated. She was !acting’ what happened to her really.
Superb actress. She got him in the end though..not coming back from that. He lost badly
@@kikeara the bedroom scene especially tidying the bed is an unconscious reaction. It is a normal behaviour it is something she has done as a wife and homemaker hundreds of times and it is an anchor behaviour when her life has just hit a wild storm with the realization of the dishonesty of her husband the bare faced cheerfulness he shows when she opens her Joni Mitchell dvd. She is devastated and the floor has given way beneath her. Right is left up is down. She is astounding cos her love for her children compels her to put on the. brave face. The husband is incomprehensible. How long would the deceit have continued. She was so brave to challenge him and burst his bubble and make him wake up and she did it magnificently after the children’s show. Her voice breaks as she tells him in the ‘what would you do?’ Statements and she lays it on how he made her life and her foolish. Perfect he is left squirming exposed for what he is with guilt She then pours out her love to her children greeting them in Princess Diana style with outstretched open arms and takes them home to treats and he follows like a sheep. I wonder what their conversation was like when they were alone. Did the secretary leave her job? It was later decided by the scriptwriters that it wasn’t a full an affair but a flirtation but that is dishonest and a betrayal of love and marital attention his wife deserved.
This Sean just broke my heart and cut deeply .
Emma Thompson is just brilliant. No matter how many times I see this part I can’t stop crying 😭
Such dignity. I ran onto the lawn at 1 am blubbering like an idiot. 😢🇿🇦
And to think that this really did happen to her in her first marriage to Kenneth Branagh. Everyone thought that they were the Golden Couple, In fact, her 'Good 'Friend', Helena Bornheim Carter, had an affair with her husband and ended their marriage in the process.
Allora ci sei passata pure tu
I remember when it happened, and have disliked both Branaugh and Carter. @sarahreid3467
I think the only thing missing in this summary is when she unexpectedly sees her brother at her kids' school, and hugs him so tightly, almost clinging to him in that moment. And her brother instinctively knows she is not okay.
The way it was done in the movie is less dramatic and likely closer to reality. Having something unexpected like that would make it less relatable, imo, and it might even remove some of the tension. Would have been interesting, but not really needed.
The airport scene too. Really shows the end result
I can sympathize with her because she's right. When you find out the one you love is cheating on you, you do feel like a fool. But, it's almost unbearable when you realize they don't care they hurt you - that's my story.
Correct. He doesn't care, makes it all the worst
Oh, I feel so sorry for you. Please make some choice, choice that will be good for you.
Her problem (Emma Thompson and her character) was that she looked and dressed like a 65 year old grandma, when she was actually in her early 40s in this storyline (and her actual age at the time). Many people in early 40s still dressed and looked very attractive and young. Both in western and asian nations.
@@Mav86asian So? Is that a reason for him to cheat? Adultery is adultery. There is no justification for it, even if your wife or husband look terrible. It is not difficult to talk to each other before it goes so far. The problem is in the heart of the one cheating. People change, they not always look good, sometimes they let themselves go, they get sick or do not take care of themselves. This is part of life. What are you gonna do then? Find another model? That one WILL have his/her weak moments for sure. And then what, run off again?
@@Mav86asian But that's no excuse to cheat and you know it.
"You've made the life I lead foolish too." 😢 truer words never spoken - infidelity does cut that deep
Infidelity kills trust.

I love how the jewelry guy makes him suffer…
Mr. Bean

Rowan Atkinson is always fantastic
My take was he was a Christmas angel trying to stop him. Giving him time to rethink it.
The other woman/man you invest in while being married will eventually become ordinary in your eyes as well just as the one you are married to. The problem is in your heart. Fascinating how people have time and energy to invest in adulterous relationship but have no time and energy to invest in their own. Ruining people's lives for a couple of moments of pleasure. Foolish!
💯
The sad thing is that even when the cheater fully realizes that, does their healing and comes full circle, the damage is already done. It takes an incredible effort to move beyond it.
@@DIVIPI9 over working ZI thought but no it was a woman who looked like me. This was six months after the marriage!! I invited her to dinner showed her my wedding photos drove her home in the car my husband had bought me ( none of this was making sense) and her one other she brought

When Emma is in her bedroom and is trying not to break down....I loose it every single time. When this came out, I was in an abusive marriage that was hellish. I was severely neglected and our business got all my ex's attention. It was the "mistress". This scene...I _felt_ her pain in my bones. The pain of rejection, hurt, betrayal, heartbreak.....😢😢😢
So many times I'd go into the bathroom to cry....and try to pull it together. Thousands of times I put a smile on my face and acted like all was OK, when it was so far beyond OK. I won't ever do that again. Stuffing how you feel is the highest form of self betrayal.
Emma is waaaaaay more beautiful than the "other".
When respect is no longer being served, leave the table 🙏❣️
@@starlingswallow Your second comment was unnecessary. The ''other'' woman is played by an actress, a real woman whose only ''fault'' is PLAYING THE ROLE of the other woman, and you just insulted her looks. Immature.

I always feel on some level Rowan Atkinson is a higher being giving Rickman every single chance to stop what he is doing and reconsider. "Tis but the work of a moment".
I've always thought that, too. Later on at the airport he shows up and provides the distraction that Sam needs. ☺️
apparently he was supposed to be a "christmas angel' who showed up in multiple storylines but they cut most of his scenes!
@@phantasma616 they should've kept his parts in a cut out the adult actors subplot and subplot of the lady with the brother. Movie would've been so much better.
RIGHT? ... same
Emma Thompson is brilliant of course, but can we please take a second to appreciate Rowan Atkinson at the counter? His increasingly ridiculous gift-wrapping sequence has me dying of laughter every time!!
We can only take time in the Flashiest of Flashes. Prontissimo. Tis but the work of a moment.
the wrapping of gift lightens up the severed relationship of the couple
Rowan knows.
❤
@@Zarina1634I never thought of that until now. Sales clerks must develop a sixth sense for when the gift is for the wife or for the mistress
This broke my heart for her, so brilliantly acted.
I remember watching this movie the first time and my stomach dropping to the floor when Karen opened the gift and it was a CD. Emma is such a brilliant actress.
The painful detail here is that this is Joni Mitchell's most famous CD. Since Karen calls Joni a love for life, she probably already has it, and knows every song already. It wasn't just the cheating. The man also said he doesn't care one bit about her.
@@aurorerich and only gave her scarves
Just found out Emma shoot the heartbreaking scene channeling her own actual heartbreak from her former husband’s affair with his coworker(Ken cheated with Helena on Frankenstein set) it makes her tears so much powerful
HBC --- clearly something wrong with her.
Just as a side note, that necklace is effing *hideous*
Agree haha and i think that was the point. It was a careless choice. He didn't think much about it when he picked it which also reflects what he thinks of his secretary, a careless choice. Compare that to the depth of his Joni CD gift which was because he cared to remember something his wife loved. The irony of him not seeing and acknowledging his deep love for his wife is such a tragedy.
Yes....yes...my thought exactly.
For the early 2000s when the film was made it wasnt that bad 😅😅
Thank you--not pretty at all.
It matches the girlfriend 😅😂
Swallowing your tears and standing still for the kids....its been done for centuries...😢....Emma portrayed this fact superbly....her real life heartache gave her inspiration....I'm sure...😢
Trust is sacred. Once lost, it can never be fully regained. We just put back the pieces sometimes, but things are never the same. Wish all people would fully realize that sacredness.
I find the last scene even better than the bedroom scene, because there she has to fight with her emotions even more. And her breaking tone in the end was brilliant. You can tell that she is a very good actress.
Emma Thompson cries, then I cry. So relatable.
My god this gets me every time. Emma Thompson is an amazing actress!
I kept hoping that Harry would surprise us and pull the the necklace from his pocket and give it to his wife.
I don't think Harry ever went any further, he just picked the 1st thing he saw....he got caught up in a little flirtation...STILL WRONG....but her heartbreak was sooo strong...
Love Alan Rickman in everything
Would have loved to see the end of this story and the sister taking care of her mentally ill brother

Just a reminder, when a person cheats, they’re not just cheating on their spouse, they’re cheating on their children too.
I have watched “Love Actually” quite a few times as I purchased it on Amazon Prime…these are my two favorite actors with their awesome abilities to portray a character…Alan Rickman portrays a middle aged man who has a coworker throw herself at him…he does rise above it in the end but it’s hard to watch… just one vignette in this movie of different lives intersecting…in real life Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman were lifelong friends in the truest sense of the word…
He did not resist, the EP's of the movie tells us that he does cheat with her.
You see Mia getting out of a messy bed and putting the necklace on. I think it's quite obvious how she received it and what happened.

Mr. BEAN at his usual crazy self😂wrapping that terrible betrayal necklace.
I always wondered what happened to this couple and a quick search revealed a tweet from the wife of the director which stated that “They stay together but home isn’t as happy as it once was.” How sad.
It’s a bit strange, because at the end of the movie we clearly see them being separated, at the airport scenes.
@@annab9994she probably stayed with him for the sake of their children. I like to imagine she left him once they reached adulthood.
She stayed, knowing life would always be a little bit worse...
@@annab9994No they meet at the airport. There is no way she would be meeting him if they have separated. He has been away on business I summise. The screen writers have conceded much later and said he only flirted with the office girl He was emotionally unfaithful.
@@claredeniz6075 Where did you read that? I just read an article with this quote in it: Some people have asked whether Harry actually physically cheated or not, but "Love Actually" script editor Emma Freud clarified that he did. "DEFINITELY had an affair," she wrote on X in 2015. "I begged richard just to make it a flirtation, but no. the whole way."
the bedroom describes their relationship, dull, browned off, small bed,
old fashioned wood furniture, handed down Loyd Loom chair, Sainsbury plastic bag in the corner, clothes on hangers not in their ‘right’ place, headboard with its back to the window (light, illumination!) completely flat bed, neat, undisturbed, her awful frumpy clothes.
This is such a clever scene no wonder it is shown regularly, a masterclass
of symbolism in visual clues.
Joni Mitchell’s plaintive lament for her lost innocence is hammering this home.
Emma Thompson’s portrayal of Karen’s epiphany, quiet muted distress,
the pathos of the scene, a superlative performance, still moving today.
Great comment. The only thing i like in the bedroom is the chair! 😂 but i would probably put it in a sun room
Very interesting indeed. Thank you for your input.
Awful clothes? Not very glamorous, sure, but not awful. Not everything is that deep. Sometimes berdoom is just bedroom and it was implied that she was actually happy until she found out, and she thought he was happy with her too. People don't always cheat because it's ''dull'', that's the thing. Everything was fine with them, he just got carried away with lust.
@@yevgeniyaleshchenko849dull can be also described as predictable……nothing wrong with that. It can be put right.
Thoughtful comment and I absolutely agree with you.
Emma Thompson’s acting in this scene hit me so hard, I actually bought my wife jewelry for Christmas.
6:29 When the bass sounds, its so powerful, its the sound of when ur world has been flipped in just one breath. That gut wrenching pain thats blown up inside ur body.
I’ve been in her shoes at Christmas. Being used after I provided everything for my family. I then made the dedication to move on..no regrets
Mr. Bean, Professor Snape and Professor Trelawney in one movie
Before that they were Elinor Dashwood and Colonel Brandon
You forgot Mr. Darcey
And they originally wanted Hugh Grant to play Gilderoy Lockheart.
It was an all-star ensemble movie, the whole cast collectively had 15 Oscar and 32 BAFTA nominations under their belt
She nailed the agony of mothers holding it together for their babes. Insides ripped up in agony, smiling, still standing, going through the motions, forcing cheer in your voice. I often wondered how many years that act would take off my life.
Harry nearly loosing it with the gift wrapping always gets me 😅
Ive been there. My husband had a female coworker who was obviously flirting with him and he wouldnt stop talking to her. I left him for a couple of weeks and we went to therapy and are stronger than ever. But I'll never forget that awful feeling of being a fool 😢
Ok but honestly that necklace is HIDEOUS
A cheap bauble for a cheap floozie in a spontaneous fling...
Because he obviously had never bought his wife anything remotely like this plus he doesn't seem to be that au fait with the niceties or of good taste; his manners, very direct plainspoken speech and clothing give clues.
OMG I thought the same thing! Haha.
250 pounds and it looked like a little girl's fake princess necklace.
@@caronstout354it really suits her well 😅
This scene was gut wrenching so well played !
9:23 he looks _completely indifferent_ to her finding out. Even if he didn't love her any more he might have looked slightly alarmed upon realising life as he knew it was about to fall apart and they'd have to split custody of the kids and he'd have to pay child support and find somewhere else to live.
Emma is beyond brilliant.
I can also relate to this story. Hubby betrayed me so many times but God helped me to recover from all the burdens, heartaches & pains.🙏
And to leave your unfaithful hubby?
Did you divorce him?
I completely relate too, my hubby was a habitual cheater. We are divorced. It really does make you feel like a fool
This breaks my heart. Every time. Emma is a genius......but ofc she's been there. 😥
His girlfriend is disgusting, making such an obvious play for her MARRIED BOSS.
Love Alan Rickman but will never forgive him for breaking her heart. Emma Thompson is a superb actor
They are both amazing actors.
He didn't actually break her heart did he? Did they date? I know Kenneth Branagh broke her heart.
@@pollypockets508 No, he absolutely didn't. They were very great friends and it shows in how much empathy and anguish they could bring to this scene.
Harry's note on Karen's present ('sorry I'm such a grumpy bugger') was actually written by Alan Rickman.
I wonder if Emma Thompson kept that note. I hope so.
He had lovely handwriting.
I heard Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman were close friends in real life, so that'd make sense.
No person in his right mind would risk cheating on Emma Thompson...
Through the ages we've been pondering what's the meaning of life? What's our purpose really...?
Finding a kind, sweet, sophisticated, stunningly beautiful, yet humble woman like Ms Thompson to share you inner most feelings with truly answers that esoteric question!
It might still be a man's world, but boy it means nothing without a woman to share your life with.
Her ex husband Kenneth Branagh did ….
I am really crying right now! Omg!! Thats soooo heartbreaking! 😭
In my humble opinion, Emma Thomsons most finely judged, most eloquent, most brilliant performance ever on screen.
This scene in the bedroom - a bed with no pillows because it is over.
I found out while dining in a fine Italian restaurant. I never made one sound, just tears streaming down my face.
I hate how he never once says "I'm sorry, "
Сказал
they're British.
I kind of like that he doesn't say it, you can see it in his eyes that he's ashamed. Some people say it naturally and some say it more as "I'm sorry I got caught". I think he was sorry and knew it was wrong, he loved that someone was finding him attractive. It's just depressing that he couldn't be satisfied with his wife loving him 😢
I think he does apologise in a garbled way just before the bit where he says he is a classic fool. He doesn’t make a song and dance about it which maybe a proper clear apology is needed really
He does say sorry I distinctly in a garbled way just before he says he’s a classic fool
When u give ur heart ur life to someone and they do this its the end of u and what u thought u had it destroys u been there too many times i can feel every tear

When she picks him up at the airport at the end… her face just kills me
Moral of the story: say no to gift wrap and do it yourself😂 also don't cheat.
I love Alan Rickman so much in that scene after the play. It was like him calling Branagh a fool and underplaying himself to give Emma the catharsis.
Its the hardest hit. When someone who have goven so much too cheats. Realizing, wondering how much was true? What was a lie? Knowing things will never be the same. That you're entire foundation has just crumbled beneath your feet and you just can't get a breath
Lloré con Emma...imposible evitarlo!😢
She handled it so perfectly and in public too! Now that’s a strong woman. Calling him out and then physically turning her back on him and loving her children.
When Emma's character said "would you stay, knowing life would always be that little bit worse". The cheating party can be so very sorry, but they just don't realise that the best part of their partner has died and things will never be the same.
RIP Alan Rickman. What a wholesome actor, even in this character as a cheating husband, he was brilliant too...😞
I absolutely love the gift wrapping scene. Rufus knew Harry was a cheater. Rufus wanted Karen to walk up and catch Harry trying to buy a gift for his affair partner, that’s why he took a century to wrap the gift. But that didn’t succeed.
I'd like to think so, and maybe that's the cinematic intention, but Rufus is still doing the same thing years later in an entirely different context in the Red Nose Love Actually.
Everytime I watch this, I am crying with her 😢
Emma Thompson broke my heart in this. Her crying made me want to cry 😢
My heart ❤ breaks when Emma realises and cries silently 💔
I struggle to even think about this scene without welling up but l cry every time l watch it (dozens of times). Knowing what's coming doesn't make it easier 😢
I found a notebook in my wife's drawer. I thought it was our daughter's. It wasn't. She wrote about somone's 'beautiful crooked teeth' and later... 'did you notice the waitress thought we were together, I felt it, did you?' I carried on for ten months, trying as hard as I could. We were both damaged. It's well over now. I remember that shocked feeling, like yesterday
The cinematography scene of that girl putting on the gold heart neclace in her bedroom, looking into the mirror above a table, cuts them to all the pictures of his family and his wife and his whole literal life after a shot of the mistress wearing the pretty gold necklace which the wife thought was meant for her, looking all happy, to then the wife in her bedroom from the same angle, not wearing the neclace but almost looking for it as she had found it before and was giddy and happy and looked loved/loving, and realizing what is actually going on and just looks shameful, shocked, pure despair but also some anger beneath the sadness. It is quite a visual journey to see as I have never seen the movie just this video by random. It shows what affairs do to a family, to the wife (or husband). Great acting all around and just can’t say enough about that cinematic experience.
21 years later, I still want to know where their pillows are.
Ditto.
In another actor's story except it was life imitating art as Liam Neeson was portraying a widower with a young son before his wife did die unexpectedly to raise their kids. 😢
Alan Rickman was fantastic in every movie he made!
great film great actors
I know people harp on her frump mom clothes, but am I the only one that thinks it’s actually cute? Besides that, difficult scene, makes me cry.
Well she handled the situation like the lady she was ,but it was heart breaking ,to think you are safe but turns out your not ,he didn't cheat but given the change he would have and they both know .
He did cheat. He gave Mia the necklace and when she puts it on, in her bedroom, it looks like she's just slept with him.
i know its a movie but i still can't forgive him breaking her heart that way. Oh, man her poor, poor heart.

i HAVE CRIED SO SO MANY TIMES OVER EMMA'S THOMPSON ACTING. IT IS SOOOOO PAINFUL. AND THE OTHER WOMAN WAS NOT EVEN BEAUTIFUL.
Thank you! It was heartless and she had no appeal, fashion sense, and was not even beautiful.

Emma is way more attractive tbh
If she was beautiful would it be more acceptable? I don't understand what beauty has to do with it.
@@saregreenwood9113 No, if she were beautiful, it wouldn't be more acceptable, but there would be a better reason behind the affair. Everyone loves beauty.
It can die in a blaze of glory....or bit by bit, hurt by hurt, over a long, long time. Emma nonetheless captures the ache of a soul who put her all into marriage and family, without ever questioning him.
Bedroom scenes of hers make me cry, such an actress! This one and the other is when she is begging Marianne not to leave her in Sense and Sensitivity. I loose it every.single.time I see one of these
I cried my eyes out when I saw her open that package. My husband and I chose marriage and kids, but we both had to work. If one of us had broken that covenant, it would’ve killed the other one. It’s your whole life that you’ve put into that person.
its easy to cry when you have been there.....done that.
What bothered me most of all is the "girlfriend" is so cheap and scummy. She has no class and making a beeline for a married man is just tacky. And he fell for her anyway. Men!
It was on a plate no questions asked and I suppose he was flattered by the attention.Emma and Alan talk about this 'no time for each other' sort of marriage in a you tube interview which is how this film marriage had become. They were caught up in getting children off to school and all sorts of things just running the home and the romance and excitement had been shoved in a corner for some while. It is a very interesting You Tube interview
Missing Alan Rickman. RIP, sir.
I still feel awful for her cause her real life husband did this to her in 1994 😢😢
But she did find love again. Probably still hurts somewhere though.
I love the Christmas hanging features in the corner.
A cinematic example of how she doesn't have to be pretty. Just young.
Rather harsh, considering the actress is a real person.
It isn't lost on me that the gift bag is transparent.
Marriage is not made for everyone because it can not be maintained without fidelity. It needs not only love but also morals, maturity, and integrity. For that, just a few people can make it..
“I am so in the wrong”… the truth is that he knows he is in the wrong. But the part which is breaking her heart the most is he knows it and if it weren’t for her happening to find out, he’d possibly not have been the one to confess to it and it could have continued. So while he can mean what he says here… she is now forever haunted by the prospect of what if she hadn’t found out. Even if they patch this up she is never going to know if she can ever fully trust him again. Something pure has been lost and so hard to get back to that bliss you once had. While you can try to repair it, it’s never the same. Something is now and forever broken and there’s no going back, no matter how much you make up for it. Things are changed forever after something like this happens.
Exactly. He would have just gone on until the secretary got bored with him or manipulated him into leaving Karen and the kids. A good argument for speaking up when we first notice the infidelity.
It's like Mr. Bean knew.
Always fantastic!
How stupid it is to loose your family over this…
Those poor kids will go from "I love Daddy" to "Oh, yeah him... I don't see much of him" in a heartbeat - and for what?
