“Cleaning of the Dead”?? (dials Telephone) Hello, Power? It’s me, Marvin! …Your cousin? Marvin Wash Simulator?? You know that new crossover theme you’ve been looking for…?
My favorite underrated genre of retro video game is virtual pinball games, especially games that try to enhance the pinball concept with larger and multiple tables, complex features, and progression.
Growing up in the 8- and 16-bit eras, when the availability and variety of games was far more limited than today, it wasn't at all uncommon that I'd rent a different game in a completely genre every weekend of any given month. The limits on choice forced me to play anything and everything, even virtual pinball. Is that lost now that 15 games in every genre imaginable release every week and every possible appetite is well fed?
The best pinball games -battle pinball for the super famicom (snes) -metroid pinball for the ds -dragons fury for sega genesis if you're looking for a progression table, I would try zen balls skyrim table.
Aside from the fact that your content is great, I knew there was some reason your channel resonates with me. You said in 2002 you were 20, and so was I. We both came up in the same era of gaming and likely share reverence for the same classics.
Not the only game. It actually got a sequel - Typing of the Dead: Overkill. That one was PC only. Not as strange as having a typing game with arcade and home console versions.
42?! That can't be right, then I'd be... uh, it checks out Thanks for the video, it's nice that you cover these kinda niche games in other not-so-popular Nintendo libraries.
This is easily one of my favorite video pinball games, and I've been playing this genre since Blaster Master on the Apple II back in the late 70's early 80's. Anytime I visit my GBA collection for a handful of game sessions, Pinball of the Dead is always in the rotation, for sure a GBA hidden gem.
Good review! I love pinball games! I've actually been meaning to play this one and I always hear good things about it! Glad to hear it still holds up! I also had no idea Advancedrunk was a thing now, but look forward to any other GBA games that end up getting reviewed! 😅
The coolest part of this video is I didn't know Drunk was basically the same age as me, I'm 43. Hey we grew up with the same generation games together. No wonder we have so much of the same thoughts in common with these games!
I will say, the bright colors might have been designed for the original non backlit gba screen which would wash things out. This is fixable in an emulator via color correction.
I love seeing horror themes mixed in unexpected game genres. This one and Devil's Crush are pretty cool, used to play them on those handheld chinese consoles.
Man, House of the Dead; that takes me back. Christmas 1999, got the Dreamcast for Christmas, which came with a demo disc. That disc had a demo for House of the Dead. LOVED IT.
If you haven't played it yet, try Pokémon Pinball, the first one for the Game Boy Color, and I think you'll have a similar opinion. It's incredible how much depth these games can have using such simple mechanics and graphics.
This kind of reminds me of the Taito pinball packs for my AtGames pinball machine. There's several of those tables where it's a normal table with flippers and ramps and alleys and whatnot and then every so often an enemy starts wandering on top of the play field and you score extra points for nailing them with the ball. Also reminds me of Metroid Pinball for the original DS - it also had enemies wandering the playfield and had a supplemental GBA cartridge that was just a force feedback motor. I get that those are later games but it's neat to see the concept as far back as the GBA.
I just want to say that I love your channel man. Do you ever do any gaming conventions? I went to too many games this past summer in Pa. and if you were there I would have absolutely gone to your booth
You're the same age as me and gotta say I had a similar reaction back in the day when I saw this in gaming magazines. But yeah these days it's cool to see some games that are just kind of weird and unexpected.
Been emulating pinball games on my emulation handheld, mostly Alien & Devil's Crush as well as Revenge Of The Gator. They're perfect time killer games! Glad to have another one for the "collection"
My all-time favorite Pinball Game Boy Game is "Pinball- Revenge of the gator"! Never have had more fun than with that one. But this one looks also nice. Stay healthy!
I am 42 as well. I think that is why I understand your obscure references (throaty roar of a K Car, Cincinnati Reds outfielder Billy Hatcher) and can enjoy the boomer specific context
The reigning champion of ambitious, technical miracles on the GBA has to go to Driv3r. A full blown third-person vehicular mission-based sandbox game on this handheld. You can get out of your car just like in GTA. It’s unreal.
Wow, this game looks surprisingly in depth for a handheld pinball game! It reminds me of one of my favorite handheld pinball games. It comes from the Nintendo DS, specifically DSiWare, called Pinball Pulse: The Ancients Beckon (2009). Greek mythology themed. Well crafted, including mini games. Long games! Great game overall!!
Same era, Pinball Pulse: The Ancients Beckon. DSiWare. It's a game by Nintendo. That's a favorite of mine. I also enjoyed Metroid Pinball! It was a good time period, just before Zen Studios took over the pinball scene.
I got Pinbot on NES by Rare second hand when I was a kid, I didn't know what to do or how the table evolved but I had a great time with it. A few years later I saw that is was based on an actual Pintbot machine. 🙂

Back in high school I worked at a grocery store and walking in one day, some person had dropped several GBA carts and I scooped them up. The games were Dual Blades (okay fighter), Mortal Kombat Advance (horrendous), and The Pinball of the Dead. Not a terrible (literal) pickup.
Had no idea this exists! I play typing of the Dead on Dreamcast with my kids and they love it. My mom kicked my ass in that game when I was a kid. I still suck at typing.
Mentioning that there are things real pinball tables can't do got me thinking about the potential of a pinball table designed around AR where the top case is smart glass and projects things on to the table for the pinball to hit. That's probably too expensive to be viable but would be neat.
Considering that number of horror-themed pinball tables (both real and digital) and HotD's weird spinoffs, it would be weird if Pinball of the Dead DIDN'T exist.
I LOVE Pinball of the Dead. Probably my favorite pinball game on the GBA and that says something considering pokemon pinball ruby and sapphire is also on the gba.
I think it could but it would be expensive. It the bottom of the table would have to be LCD with thick impact resistant glass/plastic and a way to tell where the ball is on the table. I don’t think it would do well but i think it could be done.
I'm impressed with how good this gba game looks. Sure, colors are a bit loud, but everything moves fluidly. The pixel style is reminding me a bit of an indi title called (I think) Hylix. Not a pinball game, but the movement on some of the bosses reminded me of it.
It's interesting how the devs took bits of "House of the Dead" and "Typing of the Dead" and mixed them together into a pinball game, of all things. Everything I've seen about the GBA makes it look as if "throw something at the wall and see what sticks" were a console ideology, especially compared to other systems out at the time. I'm adding my "please do more GBA games" plea to the list. I'm near your age, but I skipped the GBA entirely due to going without the internet during the years of its initial release and not knowing a thing about it until a relative showed up with the OG GBA one day. I embraced the DS with a passion that no other post-2000 game system has ever reached for me, but the GBA was one of those vague systems that I had little connection with and am still clueless about.
The GBA has a lot of shovelware games, as all of Nintendo's handheld systems do. The system has a library of like 1500+ games and it still has a lot of good stuff for it. If you like Pinball of the Dead, then you also need to get around to Sonic Pinball Party. Which really just plays like Pinball of the Dead with Sonic, Nights and Samba De Amigo themed pinball tables.
You mentioned "If these tables were real ..." which made me wonder how big a table would have to be to host interactive holographic 3D enemies on the playing field. Decades ago, I remember the last big pinball innovation (not that I keep up with the tech) was incorporating a screen on the play field at the top of the board. The original big mechanical tables will always be classic, so is this idea a way to evolve the tech if a company cared to try it out?
if you're looking for another "wait that exists??" type of GBA game, please check out the GBA port of Driver 3 it is an insane technical feat and is literally a 3rd person open world game on the goddamn Gameboy Advanced, it's wild
Rather than a cheap cash grab, this feels like someone on the HotD team at Sega just really wanted to make a pinball game and got a few of the boys on board to put something together.
Back in my day SEGA had multiple successful video games series. House of the Dead was one of them. Nowadays Sega will ignore everything that isn’t Sonic, Yakuza, or Super Monkey Balls.
My favorite video game pinball is NES's pinbot. Ironic there is an actual physical version, but the game is way better. I think the ball changing shapes was just insane at the time
You gotta cover Buffy the vampire slayer for GBA. It is a platformer. it is a beat'em up, it has that magical high school dramady/horror/kung mix that makes a great story. It has awkwardly unnecessary inventory management that makes the game harder.
Spooky season is NEVER over!!! But I'm wondering if you could do the little figures in a real pinball game. I can see using hologram tech to do it. It'd probably look a bit like the chess game in Star Wars IV: A New Hope. What with the pinball board being a sealed environment you could probably have some sort of gas or vapor to project it on. I'm not saying it would practical or cheap, but I bet it would be possible.
I've never cared for pinball, but I've been interested in this one since I've learned about it. I want to shake the hand of whoever thought to marry pinball and The House of the Dead.
Speaking of house of the dead any reviews for overkill on WII? I know you focus on retro but for a console arcade style arcade shooter this was the best you could get.
If I had known about this back then it I might have passed on it too unless I could have gotten it cheap in the bargain bin. I never bought pin ball video games back in the day because I didn't think I would like them. Pinball is one of those things that just didn't seem like fun in video game form. For some reason though, I've started to reconsider that view. I be checking this out the next time I want to try the genre.
Another GBA oddity is Dynasty Warriors Advance. It's a demake of DW4. I enjoyed them tho I must admit I've never finished either so I don't know if the GBA version really has staying power. Would be interesting to see your thoughts!
ok why this exists and how did this get approved? Like imagine if we had a tlou golf game with joel's head as golf ball with the goal of striking zombies. not that I'd be against that.

Clearly the Yakuza games need Pinball of the Dead machines in the different arcades you can visit.
Remember Typing of the Dead: the only game where you can beat zombies while also practicing computer keyboard typing skills? THAT was weird!
After the zombie apocalypse there's gonna be a ton of data to enter, so it's just making sure the veterans have an easy transition to civilian life.
Not the only game. It actually got a sequel - Typing of the Dead: Overkill.
That one was PC only. Not as strange as having a typing game with arcade and home console versions.
Yeah, the GBA has a little of everything. It was like they looked at the Gameboy's library and went "what if we just topped that?"
I had one of the NES-themed SP models, had a ton of fun with it back in the day. It always reminded me of a handheld SNES, but with a crazy library.
@@Davtwan Fun fact, the GBA could run GB and GBC games. It was just an awkward fit.

Yes, high contrast is needed on the GBA. Especially for the original model which didn't have a backlight for the screen.
