- This was taken around Christmas 2003 - on the old Escondido Branch line - prior to the Sprinter passenger train service. Here is the BNSF local heading out to Eccondido from Oceanside crossing what was one of the last remaining grade crossings with a Wig Wag.
How could anyone dislike historicle technology like this?! l grew up near these signals and would run or ride my bicycle as fast as could to watch them swing. To this day wig wag are as exciting to watch as it was in 1960! People need to pay attention to things like this because this is part of what made this country great and free.
I
Trains are so epic to watch!
*karen.*
@@Nthuziast wow I’m pretty sure the Karen here
Don’t forget about making it safe too
And this guy’s not a Karen this is an actual piece of American history on the first electric powered railroad crossings in the world
Everything about this video is cool: the horn echoing. the fading on and off of the red, wig wag warning light, the screeching of the wheels, the wig wag bell, the night photography... could not ask for more. Thank you for posting this. Too bad it is history.
Santa Fe GP30's were always the best to watch. great work horses.
Man, watching this video again takes me back.
Thanks for uploading this video, this is really nostalgic to watch since I've lived in the area since I was little. I never really got to see the Escondido local ran by BNSF. Now since the Pacific Sun took over. Ive gone to the site where this crossing once was (now gated) and it is sad that all these old historic railroad images fading right before our eyes.
The Pacific Sun operates the line to escondido at night on selected weekdays.
These RS3L's are amazing sounding! And with Santa Fe GP30! Best catch ever!!!
BNSF Bandit
Whats the line name? Or the google maps coordinate
M. Omar Batistuta Idk I live in Ohio lol
The echos scared me when I was 5 and was watching this
I like the darkness the silence and only the sound of the locomotive just before the wig wag signal starts
love the sound of those diesels rev- ving up to make the grade and then the wonderful air horns.
I to remembered this wigwag
The only time I saw it in operation was on a rainy day 25ish years ago during the day time.
Holy RS3L! Beauty of a horn and echo. Shame to see the wigwag has been retired! Fantastic video!!
I remember this wig wag. Thanks for posting the video. I really never got to see this wig wag operate since I've only gone down this road a few times. It also kindda sucks that the freight trains only come down this line like once a week now. I miss seeing them.
I like this video because of the silence at the beginning, then hearing the approaching train in the distance, and knowing the wigwag will soon come alive. Especially effective at night!
Yeah, now it's those annoying alarm sounding bells on modern crossing signals.
1:37 it officially starts
Excellent video!
Thank you.
Funny seeing the light leaking around the lens.
If on your right, usually a single signal would be on the other side of the track.
If on your left, it would be on your side of the track.
Cool seeing it spring to life, not many videos that actually show that
@AsianPerson3 I thought so. I haven't got a chance to see em up close.
I wish they had Wig Wags at my home crossing instead of those stupid traffic lights.
@AsianPerson3 The Pacific Sun Rail is the Railroad that operates trains to Escondido.
Niles Canyon Railway has these on their tracks as crossings.
Nice RS3L on the SD40-2! A little Santa Fe never hurt.
Or in vista. This may not be there any longer, the nctd upgraded crossings for the new sprinter commuter trains
I have a new video of the newer crossing signals there coming soon.
Is that wig-wag still on the Escondido Branch line since this video was taken from 2003 or it isn't there anymore?
Jonathan Bolanos it has been gone for years, if you wanted to see it in person, you should have been around when these were common like I was. When I was a kid back in the late 80's and 90's, I used to go and film there at that crossing.
Too bad this wig-wag retired due to the new commuter trains
I know UP does it's the other rr's that don't seem to care. Probably want to replace it anyway. If UP owns this signal maybe they should work on it.
This is great love the santa fe style wig wag thanks for uploading
How to describe this video in one word…
NOSTALGIA
that's too bad....there is no longer any BNSF branch lines in the county. you would think that with the size of San Diego, there would be more freight activity, but there's not....
BNSF is back in Escondido and I have new videos of them.
That horn is very eerie
Great catch!
O Hello ther
@newdealswing Where did the wig wags sent after they retired? I'm just wondering which place the railroad company sent the old railroad crossing signals like the wig wag.
Man I wish I got to see our local wig wag swing. Its gone now. It was on 49th and Santa Fe Ave
@newdealswing Hey I was wondering if you knew the name of the Rail Road doing the freight runs. I don't think its BNSF.
AsianPerson3 either BNSF, SF, or WAMX
What street in esco is this crossing?
Rat runs under the train at 2:49
2:49
love that 2nd engine
#bluebonnet
Priceless ... Thanks
AWESOME! Those were the days..... BNSF and Santa Fe....... now its all PacSun
Not anymore. The BNSF took it back earlier this month
@@StocktonSubber Is that right? Did Watco lose the contract?
@@AmtrakRailfan117 Yes. I think the contract was so that WATCO could own the line until a set date. That date being October 1st of this year.
This crossing is at Guajome St in Vista, California.
No, after sprinter service took place they took down the wig wag. It is now a gated crossing.
Kenton Richford ok
It’s got WCH e bells now with gates
@GN no. They have been replaced with regular grade crossing gates and LED lights with wch electronic bells.
are those Leslie R5ST?
A lot of people keep asking why did they get rid of theses crossings in the first place. well, the simple answer is maintenance. You see wigwags Obsolete, they don’t make them anymore ever since they invented the crossing cantilever, which was all alot more reliable due to the flashing lights, a gate arm, and a mechanical bell, which was proven to be a better way of warning when a train was coming. overtime wigwags were starting to become outdated, Railroads began replacing them with newer and safer crossing cantilevers until eventually most of them were gone. There are some wigwags left, but most of them are either abandoned or unused. you can still find wigwags on tourist railroads, but for active railroads is nearly impossible.
what road is this?
Is this the Guajome crossing?
Was this in California
There have been examples of Santa Fe style wigwags have been preserved but not to museums
I agree. I guess if it came down to a crossing gate I would rather see that happen. They should install double crossing gates at every rr crossing. Problem is they don't have the finances to do so. This would hopefully prevent accidents like the one this summer with 5 kids dead when the driver went around the gate.
Does anyone know if this was a Los Angeles or Minneapolis built one? It looks like Minn but I might be wrong.
With a GP30 (2:50) to boot!
Fun fact, As of October 1, 2020 BNSF has resumed local freight services to Escondido.
Another fun fact. Santa Fe engines were also servicing Escondido in late 2021. I have videos of them.
I remember watching this in my child hood memories eating Cheetos while watching this 9 years ago
sprinter just had to ruin everything and get rid of this piece of history, and atsf just had to merge with bn and get those damn k5hls to replace the awsomeness of those s3ls. I could go on ranting about how much better the past was but it eont chwnge what is now
I agree it's hard to come by distinct versions of wig wag Crossing signals particularly this one which is a Santa Fe ding dong wigwag
I call it a ding dong wigwag because that's the sound the gong makes as the wig wag banner swings back and forth
Nice catch! Does this wigwag still survive?
MrBnsftrain it’s gone now gates have been put in place
I’ve got a video of it on my channel. It’s Guajome Street, Vista, CA.
The Santa Fe style wigwags were distinctive because they have the characteristic ding dong sound on the gong.
Does that wig wag still stand?
Sprinter killed it.
@@floridianrailauto9032 shame on Sprinter
I agree
@@floridianrailauto9032 I only wish that at least one example of this Santa Fe style wigwag was preserved
AWESOME SHOT!
Guajome st in Vista CA
BEA-U-TI-FUL!!
Was it from 2003 or 2008
in the description it says that the original video is from 2003
Railroad crossing start at 1:38
Darn they replaced it. It was obviously replaced but they replaced it before the google street view
EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i hear an echo
San Diego County, California
The striker in the bells needs adjustment. Too bad the railroads don't take pride in their equipment!
does BNSF still operate on that line?
Yes. I have new videos of them in 2023.
I usually don’t get scared that much but this is kind of freaky
The bell lost its bing
its because the commuter trains ruin everything
Just published a new video of this crossing today.
What’s the street name
If I saw that, I would laugh at it, ignore it...and get mashed by a very slow train.
sadly they throw them out sometimes sell as scrap metal
Where is this located at?
That railroad crossing is so creepy
Is the wig wag still here?
i also recorded a wig wag to my chanell is called james macias same logo
Tick-dong-tink-dong-tink-dong
0:27 Santa Fe and car honking
