I'm absolutely amazed by the vast quantity of piano and chamber music Sibelius composed in his ten-year apprentice period between 1882 and 1892 (ages 17 to 26). Most of it isn't all that great though there are a few works here and there that show some promise in the early 1890s. Still, his determination to stick to it until he finally succeeded is admirable. This duo composed in 1891 is just one year away from his first version of the tone poem En Saga and the same year as his first orchestral overture. He is starting to sound a bit like himself here.. almost.

Beautiful playing, and a beautiful piece. I'm not sure I would call it a duo though... More a violin sonata with viola accompaniment (I was sad to hear viola never got a melody line).

Sibelius was a violinist, but not a violist. The violin is given preferential treatment throughout.
