The "wingtips" on the dashboard are for the digital side mirror screens in other markets where the IONIQ 6 does not have normal side mirrors. The US still doesn't allow this, so that's why it is this way.
When it comes to US regulations, they are slow as molasses.
Do you think the average American Hyundai buyer would fix their broken screen mirror? Nope, so they leave the dummy mirror on.
@@HughesEnterprises I don’t see a difference , they won’t even fix a regular mirror when it breaks
Tbh it looks better with the side mirrors than with the cameras.
I'm not convinced that cameras are better than real mirrors. IMO side-view mirrors should stay mandatory.
Frankly, I think Hyundai keeps winning.
Hyundai and Kia both have been killing it with their vehicle designs
@@Shocked- Kia hiring that audi designer was a very smart move
@@Shocked- both ICE and EVs!
Lol they were caught intentionally ignoring issues that cause their engines to blow up
@@brenchyalowicois6748 lol every car manufacturer have cheated, ignored and swindled throughout history
Also to note: the four pixels in a row on the steering wheel also serve a design purpose. In morse code, 4 dots represent an "H" which is a nod to Hyundai :)
Hyundai and Kia have been getting wild with their new designs and I love it. I still don't like EVs but if I had to choose between this and a Model 3 I'd pick this car all day
Yup those companies have been on point the last couple years. I rather buy this too
Have to give credit for a bold design, it's weird but I don't hate it
I am just about to do that. Agree the model 3 looks like "a car" these guys are at least coming out with interesting designs.
Teslas are poor quality
@@RockinLoud360 agree
Hey Doug! The "wingtips" are more or less placeholder inserts where the Korean version would have screens for the sideview cameras. Regulations prohibited Hyundai from using it in the US so we get the traditional mirrors and just caps where the screens would be.
Makes sense. Hyundai has been very forward focused.... just gotta wait on the dinosaurs in U.S. DOT legislature to change their rules...(oh and pleeease drop the chicken tax! But I digress)
He doesn't do research
How does he not know this? Maybe he doesn’t want it to seem like the US is getting an inferior product.
Yeah, I was gonna say I'm surprised he didn't mention that the dash "wing tips" were where the original spec had side "mirror" screens. Im sure other countries as well allows for side mirror cameras, but some like the US have regulations against it. Kinda silly if you ask me, I would say cameras would have a much better view and could even cover blindspots better.
Yeah, that was my first thought regarding the wingtips.
The translucent material in the interior is definitely for the ambient lighting. You can see how it kind of lights it up in some of the shots here, and at night I'm sure it would look even better.
I was thinking cost/weight saving but that makes sense too.
@@AhuizotlXiuh cost OR weight... and loool weight saving??? ahahaha what an idiot
Also, so you can see if there's anything in there that's not large enough to see otherwise?
You’re right!
@@godofbiscuitssf Agree, i really like it for this exact reason
the wingtips on the dashboard are for screen placement. in korea they can use cameras instead of side mirrors so there are 2 always on screens on those wingtips
This car also has sky high efficiency which is a key selling point. It's the reason for this body shape and is a differentiator between this and the Ionic 5.
Ah I never considered that. True I've always favoured the EV6 over the Ioniq 5 due to the economy being so much better despite identical drivetrains
i really don't understand how it doesn't have more range, given how efficient it is
I think Hyundai has truly focused on optimizing aerodynamics and design to deliver a top-notch electric vehicle with exceptional performance and range
Hyundai is totally reinventing itself with this new Era of electric cars. If they keep this up, I honestly can see a future where Hyundai is one of the top car brands people want
It already is one of the top brands people want
The dash is copied from audi, the gear lever is copied from mercedes, the back l looks like an amg gt mixed with a panamara, “reinventing itself”

@@davidtheboy they're coming! The X concept is showing where they will go with coupes and convertibles. They have trademarked all the GT names.
I believe the wing tips are there because in the other version they'd have the camera as the mirror and have the screens that display the feed on those wings
Yeah, I saw a video from Korea that showed their version with the cameras. Kind of cool!! The US version does look weird with the wings.
Yup, exactly. US regulations haven’t allowed for side mirrors to be cameras yet so we just get funky wing tips😂
I like that it's giving an older Saab feel on the exterior. Love the gear selector, very intuitive. I wonder how well it would be cleaned in all it's crevices in a car wash.
ahh...that's the reference I was looking for. Reminded of some car, just couldn't get my head around it.
Doug is the main target audience for the sounds of nature. Somewhere in Hyundai there is a guy making new sounds just to make Doug's day a little better
I'm kind of surprised Doug didn't make a bigger deal about the fact that one of the "sounds of nature" is ... "City at Dawn." Isn't that kind of the opposite of nature?
Enough with the bootlicking. He's only does car reviews not the preaching of men's soul. Calm that chit down...ugh.
The wing tips mentioned at around 8:56-9:15 are blanking plates for the OLED screens that would be there if you added the camera “mirror” option instead of the real wing mirrors this particular car is equipped with.
The four pixels in the steering wheel mentioned around 9:16-10:08 are also cool. Don’t forget to mention: four dots is the morse code for H. Yes, that’s instead of the Hyundai H logo.
Thanks for watching and commenting.hit me on telegram to claim your prize..
Yes, I can confirm because I’ve been to South Korea several times
Wow....morse code H on the steering wheel in place of the traditional Hyundai logo, now THAT is an Easter Egg!
Hondas used 4 short beeps as the key chime when you open the door for years and years, Morse code for H
There’s no camera mirror option…
Just got back from a trip to S. Korea. Wild to see they have Ioniq 6 taxi's over there like it's no big deal.
…..just like Mercedes E-class taxis in Europe.
The rear view of the car (in the opening few seconds) seems a mix of Porsche & Audi and is starting to grow on me. I live in California and the Ionic 5 is starting to get a bit more popular and despite the slightly limited rear seat headroom, I'm starting to favor the 6 over the 5. But I still have my eye on the Genisis GV 60. 800 volts is what it's all about.
it really looks like a porsche panamera
Hiring those German engineers and other European designers seems to me like it’s saved Hyundai. The first Hyundais introduced to North America were crap. They later learned from other carmakers’ past and upgraded everything. Now they’re leaders.
So true! Looks like someone dreamed of a Porsche and made this
It’s nice
Its also reminds me of the oldschool Saab body with that little wing on the sloped back
It does look like a Porsche
Hyundai's design team deserves an award for their output this year. Some of the most creative and interesting cars.
Also, was really expecting a "Hyundai IRONIC 6" joke when you mentioned the EQS Egg shape of the car juxtaposed against the pixel theme.
As a retro electronics enthusiast, i really enjoy seeing translucent plastics in the car
Credit for stealing other designs? Lmao
@@k.matthews1158 stealing who’s design? I haven’t seen anything like this anywhere I’ve been lately nor in various car vids. Besides… much like music, there is really nothing in car design that has truly not been done before at this stage of humanity. These guys are doing it better and more consistently than most these day (and with what seems like actual desire to please their customers, unlike many car brands which seem to be actively hostile to their customers).
Every new car is an evolution of what has been done before, that's a good thing for consumers!

I never been interested in Hyundai as a brand and their products up until the past 4-5 years where I became a huge fan. For how much you can get for the amount you pay and the reliability too, they became what Toyota used to be and even more. I am honestly considering giving them a shot with the Genesis G70 now as I feel like they are the only brand worth their prices.
No. Hyundai's are NOT reliable lol.

I believe when there are some small pixel details on the IONIQ 6, they are a group of 6 pixels. On the IONIQ 5 I think it is group of 5. Nice little detail. Also, if you get the car outside of US and you have the cameras except physical mirrors, the covers are also translucent which makes it look futuristic

@let me show you You're about a month slow. What does some dirty lake have to do with Hyundai's Ionic series?
This has been the electric car I have been waiting for for. Nice range, not a Tesla, good styling, not a Tesla, and affordable. Oh and that it’s not a Tesla.

I've recently driven the IONIQ 6 AWD, and it looks and feels stunning! Hyundai/Kia are doing an excellent job with their designs. I was impressed with how the car drove - it felt very European with its taut body control and potent acceleration, and it was hushed at high speeds. The only downside, if any, was the smallish trunk due to the tapered rear. Nevertheless, the car itself is phenomenal, and rapid charging is unbeatable 💯
Great review! I appreciated the demo of the aero panels, mirror signal and translucent antena. Other reviewers mentioned but didn't demonstrate these.
Hyundai is slowly becoming cool. I live in a town where Hyundais are unacceptable and we LOVE getting down and dirty with our Super Dutys and Silverados. But Hyundais are kinda cool. Nice Video, Doug! You never disappoint.
Hyundai's are not remotely close to being cool.

Doug, I’m not sure if you’re biased against Hyundai as you kept describing this car as being “weird” and quirky but I don’t find any of the features weird. In fact, i think it looks incredible and that seems to be the consensus with all the all other reviewers. I heard these sold out in the first 24 hours in Europe and imagine it’ll do the same in the US. I love that a carmaker is making bold moves to set the new industry standard and absolutely killing it. Please be more unbiased in your reviews. That’s what we’re here for.
The winglets are on the dash because on the international model those are raised a little more and house a side view mirror display for the digital side view mirrors, which are cameras housed in translucent material rather than a bulky side view mirror. This will add about 5ish miles to the range and also drop the coefficient from 0.22 to 0.21.
This car looks like it should be in a Sharper Image catalog! 😄Great videos Doug, you are much appreciated! Thank you!!

Yea Hyundai/ Kia only seems to be improving with that lately, They've come a long way and I can honestly say I like the brand entirely.
It looks like a Porsche and an Audi mated.... it's....just...so.... beautiful!
The "wing tips" on each side of the dash are actually where a screen would go for rear viewing, because in Europe they get a rearview mirror that is just a camera and then it shows what the camera is recording live. And those with that kind of mirror get a little bit better of range because of better aerodynamics.
Also in Morse code four Dots is an H, so not only does it say H for Hyundai but also goes with the pixel theme of the whole car.
Hope this was helpful😊
I think it has distinct ties to the Tiburon, especially in the front. I think the spoiler and the sporty sleek kind of look also pays homage to the Tiburon.
The winglets on the dash are meant for screen in other markets that uses cameras instead of traditional side mirrors.
For American they just slapped some plastic winglets to give it some kind of finished looks
I love the design of this... They are being so good lately. They dare to do something different and they do it right. 🤩

Wow cool! 😎 The rear end got design inspiration from the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door. 🚀
The transparent antenna cover is very cool! The condensation inside the antenna cover? Not so much.
More facts!
1. The wing shape on dash is for screen for digital side mirrors. If you select the digital side mirror option(which is camera), there will be screen for that like Audi e-tron.
2. The 4 dots on handle means "H" by morse code. So that represents H from Hyundai, but with Morse code.

I've been waiting for this one from Doug. Personally, I love the design of it (although there are some changes I would have made especially at the front) and its great to finally see a car of this type go head to head with Telsa in both style and performance. A lot of brands are going way off the deep end trying to make cars look futuristic just because its an EV. The Ioniq 6 does that a bit, but also has some old school styling with the Porsche-like rear.
Hyundai has seriously been knocking it out of the park and is building up a portfolio that makes it a serious competitor. I appreciate the Veloster N as a hatchback with a manual. I quite like the styling of the new Elantra/Elantra N and I think it definitely looks like a car outside its price range (although I only like the front bumper WITH a license plate ironically). The Ioniq 5 is a very classy looking EV SUV as well.

Incredible nice new car. Thanks for the review. 👍 Note. All these Hyundai workers trying to sway public opinion. Dummies
The wings in the dashboard, I think because this car has the option in some markets to have cameras instead of traditional view mirrors, the space left is for the screen. Is an optional just like the e-tron
the wing tips is for the digital side mirrors, the US did not allow this feature but other markets do. Good video!
this car also exists with cameras instead of left and right mirrors. This might explain the weird dashboard shape on the left and right side, because it's there where the screens would be integrated.

These cars are great looking when they’re new. Interesting to see how interior would hold up after 10 years of use with kids and pets.
Especially when they're recycled materials. Not saying it won't hold up but the longevity is definitely a question mark.
Eh, I don't think longevity matters much at all on EVs, since the battery lifespan and evolving tech will mean a vehicle lifespan of around 8-10 years is all these are meant to last before they get recycled. And far, far less in the event of even a minor wreck.
@@matthewbowen5841 Huh? This is not a Tesla, I'm sure you could get it fixed easily after a wreck.

The batteries have a lifespan far beyond 8-10 years. Just because they have 8-10 year battery warranty doesn't mean the batteries will only last that long lol. Basically all ICE cars have like 5yr powertrain warranties and SIGNIFICANTLY out-last that.

I wanted that giant glass roof in the Ioniq 5 but once I realized it didn’t even crack open with the usb a ports, it’s just not where I need it to be. But with how aerodynamic this car is that the RWD model can get ~340 miles of range, makes it perfect for road trips and commuting. But if Hyundai doesn’t get their ev tax credit by 2025, then I’ll have to settle with the chevy bolt euv.
That front trunk space is perfect for cables and the V2L adapter. Could have been bigger but at least you don't have to empty your trunk to get the cables out from the sub-trunk space like you do in other EVs
Great place for the jumper cables :)
I think this looks pretty good! Hyundai and Kia are doing big things. The only things I could wish for is a panoramic roof and a more powerful RWD version, maybe an N-Line version?
I also notice, they apparently try to stick to six pixels (or some derivative of it, like one and a half or two times this amount), which could potentially reflect the model number.
Oh, I bet you are right! Good call.
Very good video thanks
Other versions of the car have side cameras instead of side mirrors. In those versions the 'wingtips' on the dashboard make place for the screens.
Doug the kind of guy who licked the windows on the school bus.
Hyundai doesn’t seem to have a design language for their EV models. Other than the cube lights, it seems like they’re not concerned with having a “design DNA” when it comes to the Ionic series. Maybe it’s because they’re using the Ionic lineup as an experimental design series. Either way, they’re doing great with the Cyberpunk aesthetic
I think they want to be different than every other company that literally makes the same exact car in 6 different sizes (like Audi) which I think is great
@@wynn324 I was just thinking that. Mercedes, Audi, BMW, all have the same looking cars inside and out. With this brand all the cars look different inside and out.
Hyundai has always struggled with settling on a design language, changing it frequently, causing their vehicles that are only a few years old to age quickly. Their lineup of ICE vehicles all have inconsistent styling too, not just their EVs.
They deliberately design each car to be unique. Tbh I think keeping the pixel accents is holding this one back, I would've gone with triangular "polygon" accents
A bet each way and something for everyone
The coolest looking key fob ever.
Love this car! Super cool and slick. 👍
Hyundai has developed the strength and confidence to be whimsical. They certainly appear to be automotive company with an excellent future.
Kia just took a 55% hit to their Q3 2022 profits and Hyundai took a 77% hit to their Q3 profits, totaling about $2 billion for both. All this due to warranty claims on their POS engines. They are in a world of hurt because of their crap quality and quality control 😂
I’m liking the contrast between the curvy aerodynamic shape vs the square/pixel. I wonder how long it’ll be before we all get tired of pixels everywhere?
I’d love to see this as a hatchback or even better - a wagon.
It would’ve been nice if Doug would’ve shown the rear turn signals. Red? Amber?
In the US the turn signals are unfortunately red and override the brake light in that segment. Notice how when the taillights are on only the top half of the light bar lights up? The lower half on the small segment outside the trunk is the amber turn signal overseas. The top half outside and the full bar in the trunk is still the brake light.

Hyundai killing it in the electric game. If I hadn't scored a crazy deal on my 19 Elantra GT N Line pre pandemic I'd really consider the Ionic 5. I liked the 6 a lot more than I thought I would before this review. Can't wait to see how far things will have advanced in the next 5 years or so.
Love the retro futurism thing they’re doing
Apparently all of you hyundai bots love the new look
@@macbook802 literally just a regular person I own a ford truck. I just think the vibe they’re going for is cool
@@matthewcashews I'm sure you're reporting back to the mother ship now. Do you eat hamburgers and watch football too?
The only thing surprising is that there aren't more car companies doing that; using classic, popular, and well regarded car design elements that stood the test of time, and somehow add a modern twist to it!...
Not every car model needs to be retro-futuristic, but I think Hyundai nailed 2 good ones for their current car lineup...
@@you2be839 Imagine something that looks like an old 46 Buick Roadmaster cruising up, but it's made out of Aluminum and carbon fiber and has 700 electric horses under it's massive frunk.
I'd deal with a 250 mile range for that.
The 4 dots/pixels in the steering wheel also has another significance. 4 dots in Morse code means "H" which is the Hyundai logo
The ambient lighting which is nice😍
After seeing how great the ioniq 5 is this one has me very exited! 😃
This design looks insane but not a fan of back spoiler
Got Ioniq and it’s better than anything I have driven before amazing 🤩
iv heard that's a great car
Looks like a crazy mashup of the first cls, a 996 911 and the weird GM electric car from the 90s.
When it plays synthwave whenreversing, I'd buy
Bet there will be aftermarket led strips for the translucent parts ... Damn
Great video
It's kinda weird looking but I like it. A much better execution of the slippery shape than the EQ Mercs in my opinion. Hyundai gets better and better!
