- The bamboo flute is one of the oldest and simplest musical instruments in the world. We've stopped carrying these particular flutes, but we have a great substitution that we think you'll love!

Most cultures of the world have some type of transverse flute (which simply means a flute blown across, a side-blown flute.) Because bamboo grows in most tropical and temperate climates of the world, many cultures use bamboo flutes as their primary wind instrument. Their ease and playability make them a natural choice for many looking to enter the musical arena.
These instruments are well-tuned to major keys with a quartz tuner, to A440 standard pitch. They are fully chromatic (play all sharps and flats), with a minimum 1-2 octave range. They have an individually colored burnt-tone.

Very true! And the placement of the holes are similar to what we find in Bansuri, used in folk music and classical music in India.

Hey, I am learning bansuri right now and as far as I know in raga music they tune all flutes in lydian from the 3rd hole (meaning major from all holes closed). The raag on that flute sounds like raag bhairav, it's very interesting how a raga works, you should learn some things about it! Very interesting to see flutes tuned to different scales and the possibilities it opens up. The amount of pitch bending the indian musicians do really twists with my mind haha
Side blown bamboo flutes are wonderful. You can really be creative and create music on that pentatonic exotic scale. Wonderful video I have recently been playing around on my medium size Arabian flute from Erik the flute maker and I have enjoyed this Man's videos and tips. Well done!!
It's a nice variation on practice to play a different type of flute! There are many types of world wind instruments out there.

Very nice, love the Raga scale, just not sure my hands will make the reach at this point in time. I just started learning to play the transverse flute, a Vivaldi Minor from Eric the Flutemaker, I absolutely love it! I have a few of Eric's flutes. My first was a small Vivaldi minor in Ab and my most recent is one of his carbon fiber flutes. A Vivaldi minor in Ab an octave lower. I like the carbon fiber a lot. It has very steady tone and dynamic range at both ends of the scale. It does not have the burnt bamboo smell though. I have others in major and Arabic scales. I will probably check out some the flutes shown on this channel soon.
@@DavidJohnson-mc1yu I've been looking at Eric's carbon fiber flutes, as well, thanks for the input on them. I do love that burnt bamboo smell, first thing I do when I pick up one of Eric's flutes is smell it. I'm glad I chose that Vivaldi to start my transverse flute odyssey, was much easier to learn on. I obtained a Hall Crystal Flute around the same time, and am just now getting to where I can make steady tones on it, much harder than the Vivaldi.

Hey friend. You sound wonderful. I have discovered a great practice technique of trying to articulate a “poo” sound at the start of phrases instead of “Tu”. The rest of the phrase can transition to normal tonguing. I find this helps in extreme low registers. Hope you don’t mind the share. Cheers
The poo sound is used with transverse flutes quite commonly. You can also use duh and ha with other flutes.

Thank you for your videos on different flutes. I started with Brent Haines flutes years ago, but after several years I moved on, primarily because I could not find Native American flutes in the major scales. Is there a reason why the Native American style cannot be made in major scale, or is it just "style"? A the bamboo flutes stable in dry climates? In the past I have found bamboo would have a tendency to crack. Thank you. Enjoy your music.
The Native Flute can be played in major scales with some adjustments for notes based on fingerings. Major scale tunings can be obtained from some flute makers on request. Here is an example.

Hello, there! Thank you for your purchase! I hope you can enjoy your new instrument. Most of the sheet music I sell is geared toward Native Flute in Minor tuning. A good bet for you would be to try some ambient pads in the D Major key or percussion tracks that will work with any key that you can play to. I do offer both of those. There will probably be sheet music in Major keys available online aside from my site also. A great opportunity for improvisation with your new flute exists here.

How is such a beautiful vibration made? Abdominal diaphragmatic breathing or tongue in mouth?
I use several techniques depending on the speed. Most of the time it is done with the diaphram, but once it reaches a faster speed I move it up to my throat.
You can buy the best of these flutes under US$ 100 in India. Hindu music is based on it since tens of thousands years with written records.

The F has a bit of a jazz sound. Are the holes a bit smaller on the shorter higher key flutes?
Hello! Thanks for asking! The F is actually has a Raga tuning which is more like the sound of North Indian music. The holes on the small A Minor transverse flute are not so small like most high pitch Native American flutes. They are more like the size of most mid-range NAFs.

Yep. Because you need train your mouth, lips, tongue and throat to blow correctly and then catch high or low tones with quality. Hope, I helped you 😊

Can the notes be bent...to become sharp or flat and are all the fingerings the same in all the keys ?
Yes you can bend notes. The fingerings would be the same, but obviously the notes would change, based on the key of the flute.

Are these indian style flutes...?
They are closer to being like a bansuri than a Native American flute. I no longer stock them, but you can get one through Medicine Wind Flutes.
I bought one from George in the Key of G but did not have the good luck you had. Mine was totally out of tune and and non usable. Could not get even near to the base note G. George gave me a refund. Just to see how far out it was I had to add 3/4" bamboo to the end of the flute and then plug up all the finger holes to be able to attain the G note. Basically useless since the holes were calculated for a different length flute.
I’m sorry to hear that. Mistakes do happen. I’ve had good results with carrying a selection of keys and inventory from George. Good to hear that the maker worked with you on that. I think it’s worth another try.
