  • This is quick and messy tutorial on how to make the most basic, simple non root shakuhachi flute from bamboo. From my Daily Zen Shakuhachi, I use non root bamboo from the upper part of the stalk as they work fine for this type of flute. These are made in a similar approach to that of an artist making a sketch. Often times, the sketch can be a great piece of art in itself. Especially of the artist had been drawing for a lifetime. These flutes are valued around $100 and available only through donations to your local food bank in this unique moment in human history. I made this tutorial because I am presently out of bamboo and if you feel learned from it, and if you feel inclined, you can make a small donation to your local food bank. Feel free to ask how you can help through my Yungflutes Facebook page, Instagram and G mail. Enjoy. Thanks, Perry

Wow! Thank you so much for this. Several years ago I was inspired to try and make a rough Shakuhachi, and went as far as to harvest some local bamboo and set it aside. It's been 'drying' for over 10 years, and now I have found myself once again inspired.

That was a terrific overview video for someone who wants to see the essence of this type of flute before dropping into the details of fine craftsmanship. Thanks very much.

Really fascinating! I've always loved the sound of the shakuhachi but never learned much about it. Thank you for sharing this!

Hi. I’m following your videos from the day I started to make and learn shakuhashi, 3 years ago.
As I can’t find proper bamboo in my area (south France) the path is an hard one. But the experience is so intense! You’re part of it. Thank you so much for that.

Sounds great the way you play. I ain't too technical so you lost me with the measurements and hole positions. How come the finger holes are positioned off centre? That a better way of playing? The ones I've seen all the holes are in a straight line

  • @taazen74

How do you decide how the holes shall be up? With root I guess it is just following the bending. After seeing the video, i would love to make one, but I also see there's much more to it though. Thanks for showing the beginners step of making a shakuhachi.🙏

Wow, that seemed very easy for you to make. I might be interested in buying one from you if you were offering any in the near future. I would be more than happy to donate to a food bank for a prize such as this. I attended a traditional concert in Saitama last year and have promised myself to get myself one. I will try to find your email now!

      No, just hand polishing.
