NOTES: GUIDED BY VOICES - LIVE IN LA (Rockathon 1996). Here is my favorite live video of one of my favorite bands of all time. It was put out by Rockathon but has been out of print for years. Professionally shot at the Whisky A Go Go in Los Angeles on May 10, 1996. This performance features the "classic" GBV lineup (minus Greg Demos - Matt Sweeney from Chavez fills in). This video is over two hours long and features 43 songs and FIVE encores! Enjoy.
"Alright this is our last song"

This is the greatest rock band of all time.
yep!
And they influenced the Strokes, the other greatest band of all time.
Tied with Fugazi Sleater Kinney, Gang of Four , The Clash.
Ciaran O Sullivan Try Velvet Underground and Stooges.
yes, yes it is
“I need more bass drum”
I'm fairly convinced that Pollard keeps his songs less than three minutes in length so that he can continually quench his thirst for beer. I love that strategy.
And when he realizes he needs to pace a little bit plays mesh gear lol
Kick drum sits in the mix like my drunk uncle in a weak lawn chair.
annabelleshaus : brilliant LOL 😂
Yeah sound guy blows.
yeah gotta rolla bit of top end off, that's fer sure!!!😳
That man singing is a hero.
Legend has it they still don’t have any vocals in the monitors
GODDAMN!
Fucking Whiskey is like 400 years old. Fucking pathetic. All the feedback. Hollywood twats.
I was there! I stood next to Mitch in the bathroom during the break. I turned my head toward him and asked if I could get a job carrying around their amps. Looking back, he probably thought I was a fvcking weirdo. Some drinking implied.
Yeah well, I was at the Pukkelpop 1995 gig. Look at Bob's sweatshirt. I gave it to him. Belgium ftw.
@@jochemstruelens9410 legend 👑
And as much as Bobs voice is occasionally corrupted by alcohol and tobacco fumes it will always remain Powerful and True
hell yea
They are truly unique.
Back in 1998, i discovered them (and so many others !!!) on the MATADOR RECORDS double best of. Immediate and eternal love.
What a gift for poets.
❤
What kind of deal did he make w the devil! It's like he drinks beer, closes his eyes, and just starts singing and it just keeps coming....That's some superhuman shit right there.
Robert Pollard is the personification of the American Dream, prove me wrong.
@@mikewurzelbacher8508 Can't. Wouldn't try. Cause you right, boy!

MATT SWEENEY!
What I wouldn't give to have caught GBV in 1996. I was 19 and lived in Bob's hometown, but I hadn't yet discovered him.
I did get to attend the 40th anniversary show in Dayton last month. GBV in their hometown with my all time fave Dinosaur Jr opening up. Magical.
Sweet. I went the second night. Got too see my 2 favorite bands Built to Spill and GBV together in my home town. Crazy
Kinda makes me wanna stand in my city centre with a huge placard stating im guided by voices ,and stopping randoms saying excuse me sir /madam or sir and madam have you heard the good news ,you havent well its guided by voices and unky bob is my savior

lol encore 5
i listened to them a lot from 93-96 - i finally got to see them around this time - holy shit i couldn't believe pollard's energy live.
I have the flyer for this show hanging up at my house
Matt Sweeney has just worked and worked and worked.
Golden era Chavez
Greatest. American Band. Ever.
"where's the set list?" "Is anybody doing sound?"
Best fucking frontman ever, band ain't too shabby either, plus i've always categorised smothered in hugs as neo grunge trance
haha great categoriewvf;oerubver. no but srsly
One of the most important videos on youtube
i hope this video exists here forever. Please God don't ever take it away from me.
Monitor feedback ends around Motor Away and FOH starts to get it the mix right. This is a total gem for us GBV fans. They were so young then.
Best American band ever !!
40!
I was still in my twenties at this time!!! lol Man to be young again
They were in their mid to late 30's in the mid 90's. 😂
I dubbed this on cassette to play in the car when the VHS came out. Love it!
What I'm doing right now.
UA-cam will do, but i wish badly to go back in time to witness this lineup
I can't stand how horrific the kick drum is. The FOH engineer was probably a death metal or ska fan. The monitor feedback is usually cus of Bob's "cuffing" of the SM57. As an audio engineer I've seen this at Sapphire Supper Club in Orlando in 1999; then, they used a Sabine on the monitors. The F/B was targeted and gone in 10 minutes and Bob had all the monitor he needed at that amazingly crazy show.
I'm amazed how tame the crowd was. In Orlando 'we' were nuts and Bob was soaked with beer that was tossed on him in a total celebration of seeing GBV for the first time in our lives. It was such an amazing show. I'll never forget it.....ever.
oh, STFU.
Doug Erhard oh, SMD
there have been far far worse bass drum sounds in the history of live music
uh actually its pretty bad really and the problem is that it is way too loud and the bass guitar is nowhere
Amen. That's why I never gigged with a hole in my bass drum head. They'd always fuck it up and make it sound all metal and shit.
Robert Pollard was doing a crossword one day, looking at the hints and probably thought "wow! what brilliant song names! I think I'll be a musician!"
I've been into rock music since the British Invasion, have seen hundreds of live shows, and consider myself very knowledgeable about rock music from the 60's to now (1/1/2022). But I only ever knew one GBV song, "My Valuable Hunting Knife". I somehow missed knowing about this group until recently. A big miss on my part. They are a great band and, my God, how prolific a songwriter Bob Pollard is.
i mean, if you're only gonna know one of their songs, that's truly an excellent choice
I was at the Gibson's Tempe show the night after this....before the show, I stood in line for the men's room with Bob and he told me about his brother Jimmy playing basketball for the Sun Devils. His voice was completely thrashed from this Whiskey show.
I was there, too!
Such amazing story
ahhh the good ol' days when you could actually smoke AT A FUCKING ROCK SHOW
My brother was a doorman at Stache's in Columbus, told me to give them a listen, about 20 years ago. I had no clue I've been living in Dayton literally blocks away from these guys.
this is unreal. maybe the best setlist ive ever seen.
Moves me to tears
Most great bands have 20 good songs not 44 in one set.
Pollard is the man! He writes a song quicker then most people’s visits at a bar
Isn't that incredible what Bob can do, write songs. He still has that nitch today.
i recall a bit from a radio interview with the band long ago... "bob, I hear you write ten songs every morning on the crapper," "yeah, and five of them are good!"
the set list is WAY MORE than most all bands greatest!!....And he has been writing hists for 25 years since this was done!!
Fucking amazing hearing Tobin Sprout.
Saw them on isolation drills. Just such a great band. Wish they would be around forever
Holy cow! I was at this show. SPOON and Meshell Ndegeocello opened for GBV. So great to see it here--what a flashback :)
+Wendy Worthington Holy fuck, that must have been incredible. I love Spoon as much as GBV. What were they like back then?
That show was the first I had heard of Spoon and I was hooked. I remember thinking I had stumbled upon something very good. They were super energetic and spot on.
I wish I could have seen them back then. Would also be great to see video from that night.
This version of gold heart mountain top queen directory sends chills down my spine
an audience without cell phones, super refreshing
No monitors, no set list. Phenomenal!
I HAVE to see these guys live. Not doing so is not an option.
in 2012 I was 20 years old with the X's on my hands and Robert Pollard handed me a bottle of Crown Royal. Likely trying to hand it to the cute girls on either side of me but that show was a blast. Never had a good time at the Beachum until that point.
I got to go to Tempe tomorrow!
what a bunch of winners. A+.
I know and love all of these songs, what an amazing set- and quality recording
Oh god!!! Thanks for posting. I would have given a kidney to have been at this. I fully knew and loved them right then but I was 15 and stuck in a small town. I would have flipped my wig. This is MY classic rock.
Magical to hear him refer to "Under the Bushes" as the new stuff since in my mind it's equally classic.
America's finest export.
Such a great band - and "Under the Bushes..." is a formidable record
Good golly this is some life affirming stuff
Matt Sweeney has more cred than anyone. Ever.
For real though, google his credits. He has a stupid amount of cred. As a producer, engineer, co-songwriter. He done ok for himself. I always wondered why Bob quit working with him but its clear he priced himself out of Bob's range.
Was he just helping out here? Never knew he had a stint with them
@@lucid685 I think so, I think he was based in LA back then (I heard Chavez was a NYC band but pretty sure they had a stint in LA)
@@lotsofciggies Nah, I don't think it's a matter of money - at least not in that sense. He put music aside and focused on his day job in NYC (I believe?) in the late 90s, and likely wasn't available to move out to Dayton and join GBV
this is the best version of Wished i was Giant,(among others). i feel this song showcases why his vocals are so amazing like no other.
Even though they lack a proper "setlist", this is without argument a remarkable set. Hit after hit after hit!
One Word:
5 Encores
I am a scientist !!!!
THERE ARE NO MONITORS
Whole set but esp. the encores 👌
Just found this....what a show GBV put on that night in 1996! Greatest band I'd never heard of, until a couple of years ago.
Been listening to GBV for just 2 months now, wishing I were old enough/aware to see this show live if only for the moves @39:09
Matt Sweeney on bass. So cool.
Wow just wow!
yes omg yes
Thanks for this video!
Thanks for the upload!
this is the best video on the internet
Can we all take a moment to acknowledge that this performance of Wished I Was A Giant is the greatest vocal performance of any rock song ever?
Willing to say that Robert Pollard is the best frontman of all time.
I've been pondering your last statement a lot lately. At times, man he sure is. BAR NONE.
@@TheErikrust hi, it’s me again. Cheers! I am seriously seeing how brilliant Pollard is, after years flowing by, I understand him even better now. And watching things on UA-cam, that I’ve never seen before. I was impressed with how sometimes, he’s extremely impressive vocally, and then it’s gone back down to normal. In those moments, he is at the top of the game, like a proper rock god of any century. He is a unique character in the world of rock, and most impressive and inspiring “rock star”. He is one though, one of the greatest I say!
yeah, great performance and Gibby slept through it!
It's such a fuckin impossible song to sing, too
Knowing that I will never get to see them live, I watch this at least once a month. So great. Bob is the best drunk dude ever.
Dang where you from?
Saw them live last week.
i'm about to see them at riot fest man i'm crying as we speak
Mathew Peachey I’m from Manila and missed my chance when I was younger to see them live over 22 years ago when I visited the US.. Now health problems plague me and won’t be able to see them live anymore.
@@rickg8015 it's been a while but I hope you're doing well, if not better, since this was posted
thank you for upload!
Simply brilliant...thnx sooooo much!! killer upload

Que pedazo de concierto, gracias!!!
Mad props to the singer for wearing a pukkelpop '95 sweater.
Always gonna have a soft spot for the classic line-up
brilliant. tx for the upload.
Thank you, mumblepop. Have wanted to watch this for years. Surprisingly good audio!
I swear, I watched this VHS like 20 times back in the day.
Thanks for posting.
Awesome, thanks man!
Whoa. I've never seen this before. Thanks for posting
Bob is in superb brilliant voice through out these performances! Outstanding playing by the whole band! I have to watch this live concert over and over as to not miss anything, its my favorite of all the live videos of GBV!
Treasure trove right here
Man Marlboros were 2 packs for $5 back then
i remember when they were 45 cents!
back when life was cheap
Dude! Awesome! Miss watching this! Had it on VHS but it was destroyed. Probably from watching it 10,000 times.
fantastic show of a legendary band at the peak of their powers
some would argue they are still at their peak 25 years after this recording.
@@bookboy7007 i absolutely agree
The greatest fourth encore in the history of rock.
Great! Thanks to mumblepop for sharing this stunner.
Remarkably similar to how they sounded (even the songs they played were similar) when I caught them in 2002. Hard to believe that was almost 15 years ago. I was a sophomore in HS. Jesus.
+Jimmy Jamestown Massacre going to see them this summer. really cool but odd rock band. many great songs.
i hope robert isnt fighting with the band members when i see them
I detect a strong Ramones influence
I was there. It was fantastic!
love the telecaster and les paul together
this is the best thing on youtube. GBV!!!!!!!!!!!
yes
Some people I knew were expecting some kind of lo-fi thing...tee hee...
Damn that kick drum is LOUD!!!! :)))))
Ending is both infuriating and hilarious
Bob going hard on postal blowfish the uncles feeling it
I was here/there. grateful. sad for lost time. Typical Whisky show - no legit sound person. I actually grabbed a set list from the stage and then gave it back after realizing I was too eager. I was part of the problem. Bob's lack of vocals was a real problem. We couldn't hear any Bob in the front. When music was good and live music was great .... and real.
I was at this show. I actually had a black eye.
Commercial success aside, The Beatles, Stones, Who, Kinks, Nirvana etc. have nothing on GBV. Robert Pollard is the Loki of Rock Gods, melancholy trickster who knows the deepest truths.
Along with Ian Anderson
You said it.
but don’t understate how great those bands bar nirvana are. personally i prefer GBV to them all sure (maybe not the Beatles not sure), but that doesn’t mean GBV are somehow objectively better
@@thebasedgodmax1163 Of course not. Ranking bands is nonsense anyway, but one has a sense of who is epic as opposed to who is pretty good. Bob would be the first to admit that he could never have become the artist he is without Lennon, McCartney, Davies et al.
@@thenavajoknow i always felt like GBV were basically if the Beatles and Kinks did 90s indie rock. Bob’s voice is very British Invasion-y i think
Yeah, the VHS went dead during Johnny Appleseed, too. Thanks for uploading!
