    As a former Correctional Officer,,,I can say that what worked for me was simple. 1. Keep your word-Period!!! 2. You are not Judge,,,Jury & Executioner,,, they're doing there time. Treat them like you want to be treated. 3. Respect -Give it & it will be given,,,often earned. 4. Be brutally honest. That's well appreciated. 5. Do NOT try & be a tough guy w a loud mouth,,, you'll catch a reality check sooner or later. The goal is to go home @ the end of your shift.

    I worked corrections for 3 years. On the midnights, I had 188 inmates to myself. This is the tour we did building maintenance, cooked two meals (1400 trays), and got inmates ready for transports. Inmates never bothered me. Staff did. They snitched, undermined others, brought in contraband, and slept with inmates. Cops wrote us parking tickets while we worked. They hated us because so many of us got arrested. I say never take this shit job. Even the public doesn't like you. Just wait for mandatory overtime forced down your throat.

    After a while you just don't want to do this anymore, the mandatory overtime is MASSIVE driving factor that kills a lot of correctional careers before they even have time to really start.
    Toxic Leadership that work 8 hour days, while your being mandated to work mandatory 16 hour shifts back to back and then questioned why you can't stay awake or get to work on time because your a zombie after a while and then get disciplined for it.
    Your friends will promote from officer to sergeant and become an entirely different person, you'll see officers in relationships with sergeants and then they'll abuse that persons power if you disagree with or step out of line with them.
    Prioritize your mental health first, this career can be rewarding but a lot of problems out of your control can also drive you away very fast as it has me.

    I've been in the service for 20 years and have now decided to change careers... you don't get the appropriate appreciation from your superiors or from the public. The press only reports when an official has done something wrong. Otherwise we are on our own every day. It is a corrupt world where nepotism is practiced and those who belong to a certain circle are promoted. It is one of the most frustrating jobs. no backing from anyone. everything you do can and will be used against you. You have to put up with a lot and you won't be a happy person that way. Three COs in Dekalb county jail died off of work. They bullied an inmate because they were being disrespectful. Instead of de-escalating the situation they decided to escalate it. It took the inmate 6-7 months to get information. This inmate was still making more money in jail than out of jail and they were even warned by other COs.

      County jail is ran by the sheriffs, and the prison is ran by Correctional Officers. The jail has more equipment for combative situations than the state corrections, but the harder of the two is for the inmates. They have issues cause of gang sets, etc.

    In any law enforcement agencies, usually its some of the staff who would snitch on their fellow officers. Especially in correction departments, the inmates are usually friendlier than coworkers. I was always talking & joking with inmates. I had/ have positive attitudes and personality and had constintency at work. However, respect has to be earned. Not given.

    I’m not a new CO by any means, but I was hoping some of you could help me out.
    I worked in a medium security unit for several years and was well respected. All my yearly reports were at least 4/5s, and I never had any counselings or similar.
    Unfortunately, I made some poor personal decisions (not employment related) and I wound up in prison…. Ironically where I worked before.
    During my time as an inmate in this unit things were different. “When in Rome” I suppose is the best example of what I changed into. I would use drugs, yell and got tattoos.
    A few years later after I was released, I reapplied for my old job. Since I had experience they rehired me of course, but I lost ALL my seniority.
    My issue is that my fellow officers look at me very differently now. It’s like they think I’m someone else. It makes work very hard and I want to try something else. One of the female COs won’t even talk to me because of all the cat calls and exposure I did to her when I was locked up.

    • @SinisterShift
      @SinisterShift 4 місяці тому +1

      I'd recommend going elsewhere then, you're not gonna be treated the same there as you may have been when you first worked there. Times changed since then, people came and went, you changed as well. You left the job, for whatever the reason can came back years later you're not gonna have the seniority even if you didn't spend time as an inmate there as well. That's normal to happen, but your situation is you're also going back to work, which is interesting they even hired you back in the field and in the same place nonetheless. But also having just came back from being locked up in there people all around are gonna have their opinions and feelings about you. You either take it all in stride and show you're a different person and start from the bottom as a new guy and hope in time it all changes or go elsewhere. But know either way you're 9/10 times gonna start fresh its just how it is.
      Look at it from their perspective, think how would you feel and think about a person if roles where switched and instead you're seeing this guy who was for the last few years an inmate and was like you said you were. It's understandable they'd feel a certain way, it's understandable how that female CO might feel and how she treats you after how you said you were.
      Now that's not to say you can't come back from it all but you have to understand you've gotta work through a lot of stuff and show you're not that guy they saw as an inmate. But know it's work and takes time to change all that.
