  • Are new RVs really built to last? Or are manufacturers cutting corners and leaving owners with expensive problems? In today’s episode, we hear from Jerry, an experienced and knowledgeable RVer who spent nearly $35,000 on a brand-new Jayco travel trailer, only to find himself battling frustrating issues from the very start.
From electrical problems and black tank disasters to a slide-out that never worked properly, Jerry’s experience is a wake-up call for anyone considering buying a new RV. Despite his background in construction and meticulous maintenance, he’s been left questioning Jayco’s reputation for quality.
Unlike many frustrated RVers, Jerry still has a good relationship with his dealer-but even with their help, he believes Jayco has dropped the ball on both craftsmanship and customer service.
So, is this just "how RVs are" these days? Or is there something seriously wrong with the way some manufacturers are building and backing their products? More importantly, what should YOU do before dropping thousands of dollars on a new RV?

Alan, thanks again for allowing me to share my story. I naturally didn’t get the bedroom door debacle included because I’m too long winded. Also, my roof is a real concern. I’m trying to get a local rv technician to look at the slide issues, and even more critical is my roof concerns and what looks like something trying to poke up through the roof.

Unfortunately Jayco is not Jayco. Their name is Thor Industries.

Five years ago we bought a new Jayco Whitehawk travel trailer. Within a couple of months we had what I would call a major floor structural/design issue. The dealer was reluctant to work on it (they had run into this issue before) because they said Jayco would only pay them for about half the shop time it took to fix it. Jayco said they would work with us on it just take it to the dealer. Jayco would never say what they would do and would never put anything in writing, always a phone call. After two years of frustration trying to get the issue resolved sold the rig at a big loss to a handyman that said he would tackle the repair himself. Was very frustrated and disappointed at Jayco giving me nothing but lip service and no help.

We bought a Rockwood in 2020 and had a very good experience. Yes, we had a few minor issues that the dealer fixed, but none of them were items that made me rethink my purchase. We've used this rig on a seasonal lot, so it gets lots of use, but not a lot of road miles.
We just ordered a new Flagstaff (Rockwood twin) because we want to downsize a bit and we're hoping the experience will be the same. We're going to hit the road more instead of doing a seasonal lot, so we'll find out if that makes any difference.
I'm with the others that say to avoid anything manufactured by Thor Industries. I've not been impressed with anything I've looked at from them.

Thanks for this video. I have to say that after an axle-related issue on my 2022 Jayco TT, my dealer and Jayco actually addressed the problem at a minimal cost to me. I'd rather not have had to go through the churn required to get to that point, considering the TT was still in the warranty period, but I am satisfied with the resolution. Am I being an apologist or Jayco fanboy? No, but I have talked to people who've had problems with some of the lower end brands and with really bad dealers, and I wanted to at least agree that the dealer is the best asset so focus on that part of your RV purchase first, even if it means driving to a different city or state.
My wife and I know that we will eventually get to a point where we need to sell the RV we have and buy another one - will it be a Jayco? Maybe, but I'd probably be saying that if I had the problematic Grand Design that sat in the storage bay next to my Jayco, or the Cougar that was owned by the guy across from us at a campground last year because they had their own issues and stories. The chances we will buy from the same dealer are high. Yes, it is mostly true that they're all crap - but you can still be smart and minimize your risk going into the deal. No manufacturer will get a free pass on my next purchase, we will do the same research and due diligence we did on the present one, and we will gladly spend whatever is necessary to have an expert inspector check everything out before taking receipt of the RV.

Trade it in for a Intech, Oliver, Outdoors, Escape. Stay away from Jayco Thor, Forest River and Winnebago.

I actually own 2019 Destination trailer I have had very few problems. It's a little older style, not horrible. I must admit I love the look of the new Alliance Landmark. But hearing different issues and how these manufactures back their RVs. Your looking at 100k plus. Scares the hell out of me.

I bought my used Jayco Melbourne from a private person; the dealer I worked with for repairs etc told me you must condition all &seals & the arms/tracks for the awnings as well. Other things too. Seals around windows. Roof inspection etc as well. Sounds like Jayco trying to blame the recipient?? Idk . . . But fishy . .

If i purchased a used unit I would expect thet i would need to work on it but when i pay 130 thousand four something new I shouldn’t need to work on it and I shouldn’t drive it from twin falls to mn and have to have it at a dealer all summer not usable then go south for the winter and have it at A dealer getting repaired all summer again then again the-next year it has spent more time at the dealer than it has with me being used the most expensive unit i have ever purchased and the worst quality that i have ever owned

I’ll be that guy…. While I greatly respect Jerry in that his history of DIY would seem to indicated someone who could roll with the inevitable challenges faced by RV owners, he probably shouldn’t be one. Yes, he built structures long that are still standing, just like I built my own home 45 years ago with my own two hands, but he’s reached a point in life that he doesn’t want to be dealing with issues and inconveniences that a lifelong DIY guy would let roll off his back. Example: rubber seals not folding out until bumpers were installed (many brands offering premium trailers and coaches do this standard) to which he complained it shouldn’t be necessary. I respect his opinion, but he really needs to just walk away and find another way to spend his golden years with his wonderful wife.

@Roadiewing. I hear you, but the slide seals were not the only issue. Edited footage had the slide wall behind the dinette jumped off the support brackets going down the road, and the roof has some places that really concern me. Lastly, the bedroom door fell half way off, put back on, fell. Ack off, bent the clip, stayed on. Then closed the door, first time used, the whole track pulled loose from the ceiling. The track was mounted in 1’8’ or so paneling, not one piece of scrap backer even, (NO EXCUSE!O) I didn’t get to include I’m taking a vintage trailer restoration course from Mobiltec. I’m restoring a 1967 stick and tin Trailblazer. The whole back and front rotted, tore it all off, rebuilt better than new. I can build a stick and tin from scratch. It’s just the crappy workmanship. Even professionals used to say Brinkley is so much better, (TWICE TGE PRICE). now they are leaking and breaking terribly like them all. Just wanted the whole story. Thanks for watching

Spend 30 minutes on the internet researching RV’s and there is no way anyone with an average IQ and some common sense would ever buy one. It’s the same story with every one of these videos. Best advise any of these UA-camrs can give is to advise people to simply not buy one.

    • @jerrytalley802
      @jerrytalley802 12 годин тому

I agree now. For some reason I didn’t see RV Wingman, Liz Amazing, or Jacob from Rigor rv 2 years ago. Maybe once I started having issues is when I found them? Also, I’m thinking all the beginning of Covid built rv’s finally started showing up? I have no idea in hindsight what happened, just know I didn’t go into it without a lot of research and talking to Jayco owners. Sadly, the pre Covid built rv’s are the owners I talked to. 2018 bunkhouse model a couple bought used. Not one issue for example. I’m hoping this video will do at least 2 things. Make the companies realize the Gig is up with cranking out poor quality, and fix that, and the people looking at their products will pass over these new rv’s until the companies fix these ridiculous quality issues. A few more dollars on parts, more quality control along the way, and they could be proud of their products again. To me, if Jayco and others built quality before selling out to the big corporations, then they know how, and could do it again? If they don’t, sadly I hope they all fail until they wake up. And the answer isn’t always, “spend more, buy a Brinkley”. Now there’s some horror stories coming out about them, and they are double the price of my camper, ugh!
