Great video! I like that the artist names were kept up top during the examples, and how you showed the specific aspects of their styles that we’d recognize.
I really think that these animator catch really well the first manga episodes of Soul Eater, I love the manga as well because, holy the battle episodes are insanely drew, it's a bit sad that Atsushi Ohkubo doesn't care much about battle scenes like he used to in Soul Eater, like... he now focus more in fan service than dynamic poses, this is why I love Soul Eater anime so much but it won't get any new seasons, just cameos on other animes like Soul Eater Not, there you can clearly see how much his style changed
Great video, though kinda sad that you didn't mention shin matsuo lol. Episode 23 is my favorite soul eater episode on a technical level, not only because of yutapon but mainly thanks to matsuo's incredibly atmospheric and eerie direction for asura's awakening
Thanks, unfortunately tho considering the topic is centered around the show's animation and for the sake of brevity, that's an area i couldn't give too much time to. Although i just realised i forgot to mention him when doing the lil overview of the regulars. My bad there haha
I remember the first time I "saw" Soul Eater. Everytime I would go to the mall and I'd sit in the food court there was this anime store nearby that sold anime stuff like Pokemon, Dragon Ball Z, etc and one of its interesting aspects was the TV it had facing towards outside the store (to the passerby). I am not sure if it was reruns or it simply liked to show it but I remember seeing Soul Eater there all the time. If I being honest, I thought it was weird at first, Im not sure what it was exactly (maybe the dark attire some of the characters wore as well as Death) but I thought I would never watch it but years later when I was a teenager, with netflix (i think I cant recall) I decided to try it out (especially since I was getting into anime) and I loved it so much! It makes me sad that I didn't "discover" it sooner but it is what it is.
Blackstar v mifune is LEGENDARY. I LOVED IT, the red with the lines back and white at the time BLEW ME AWAY. Animation and composite are important I rely on story and substance more. But, man did Soul Eater slap harder then a wife beater.
Thanks for this video. It’s been years since I’ve seen Soul Eater, but it always stuck with me and I always thought it was just because how epic the opening was. I knew the animation was good, but damn I never appreciated it was much as I am right now. Gonna rewatch it
As my first major anime Soul Eater has a special place in my heart, I'll always love it The way this show looks will hold up for ages, it's looking good as always. I do still hope that one day after Fire Force maybe we can get a reboot green lit... It would be amazing
as a huge soul eater fan this is so interesting, i had no idea such big animators worked on the show! i absolutely love the art and animation style of soul eater and i wish we had more anime with that unique edgy art style. or i wish we would get more soul eater XD i think another thing that made the anime so memorable is that their voice dubs were really good and seemed to fit the characters perfectly. i can still hear all their voices in my head loll
Soul eater taught me things dont have to look more and more realistic just do be considered good. I didnt like the animation the first time i tried watching it but when i tried again a few months later i really fell inlove with it
I like to call those Action Flow Frames, for obvious reasons. Soul Eater definitely showed how they could change up the feel and dynamic of an action scene. Shows like Fate UBW and Demon Slayer have shown just how refined AFFs have become. There are a ton of other examples of them in other works and it's one of my favourite techniques that have been used in animation.
I would love to see a soft reboot of Soul eater where they don’t redo the whole anime but go back to a certain point in the story and continue from there. Like if they started where Medusa (possessing a child) surrenders to the D.W.M.A or redo the story from the start of the Arachne arc and then just follow the manga. If you still don’t understand what I mean look at the Blue Exorcist anime for reference. The end of season 1 had some anime only stuff from what I understand and season 2 over writes that ending and continues. When’s season 3 coming out?!
Love your work every time you upload, I click on the video. I would love to see a video for one piece on how its animation got so good. You don't have to listen to me, but I would love to see it keep up the great work.
Soul eater is my special interest and I’m a super nerd for animation, so this video was super interesting!! I’ve always thought the soul eater anime was beautiful, even though the story lacked comparing to the manga, the songs, animation and style made up for it big time!
I haven't dropped this in a while but maybe I'll try again. I think I good video for your channel would be how baki uses limited animation perfectly. And maybe point out how some shows do limited animation poorly
Straight facts, I'm surprised you didn't include Fire Force since it has the same creators and it has a Soul Eater easter egg of Maka's dad. Although that could be another video idea. Still a quality video regardless!
Story Board Play A Very important role when it comes to Key Animation Also man I love your channel and how you break stuff down for people who don’t know stuff about animation
Hey man I absolutely love your content and how it covers the real talent and substance behind what makes the anime we watch great, do you know any other content creators like yourself that you could recommend? I find it hard trying to find channels that highlight people like the individual animators and staff behind anime
Anime Ajay is one of those that highlights different animators, although he consistenly works with another youtuber called Totally not Mark so check him out as well
It's unfortunately one of Wakabayashi's last major contributions to the industry but certainly one of his most ambitious, which is saying something considering his previous work on Naruto. It's controversy tho is no surprise, anime fans typically react negatively to staff that vear off model, and this one was probably one of the extreme examples of that. Overall it's totally fine if people don't like it, when I first saw it the episode left me quite mixed. Although the criticisms leveled at it were often ignorant blaming budget or laziness.
I honestly really wish that if a Soul Eater remake would ever get actually greenlit, Takuya Igarashi could get another chance at it. Although that could be unlikely considering he's been stuck with Bungo Stray Dogs.

I really think that these animator catch really well the first manga episodes of Soul Eater, I love the manga as well because, holy the battle episodes are insanely drew, it's a bit sad that Atsushi Ohkubo doesn't care much about battle scenes like he used to in Soul Eater, like... he now focus more in fan service than dynamic poses, this is why I love Soul Eater anime so much but it won't get any new seasons, just cameos on other animes like Soul Eater Not, there you can clearly see how much his style changed
god damn this show doesn't QUIT! so flippin' good.
Really excellent informative video. Thank you.
Dude this show goes hard
Literally the coolest looking show ever I love everything about it so much ty for this
Two shows we need a full remake for
1.soul eater
2.berserk
Great Video! I can put a name to Soul Eater ed 1 now. Which is great cuz it's one of the best animated endings ever made.
Gonna rewatch it
As my first major anime Soul Eater has a special place in my heart, I'll always love it
The way this show looks will hold up for ages, it's looking good as always.
Great video 👍
Such a memorable show. It was *the* show that got me into anime. It’s great. Great video, cheers.
I’m loving the drawings in the videos as of late man!
1:29 ‘Eyyy! That’s a classic~
this video just made me start soul eater
FINALLY YOU COVERED IT!!!! Fuck work… time to watch this 👀👀👀
Huge Soul Eater fan but I've never seen that flip book animation. Wow, love it.
Soul eater taught me things dont have to look more and more realistic just do be considered good. I didnt like the animation the first time i tried watching it but when i tried again a few months later i really fell inlove with it
Wow I never realized how incredible the animation was in soul eater!
Starting recently reading OP, and will get to the anime soon, so there will be be some OP animation videos in the future :)
@@forgottenrelics1197 would love to see if you could do a collaboration with Skippy, another OP anime animation reviewer.
Men, I've forgotten about this anime! I've watched as a teen but never actually finished it, now I think I gonna start it again
Huh, it’s kind of crazy how much thought goes into animation. Some people really just have crazy artistic talent.
Omg the way you brought up saint Seiya, one of my favorites 😭😭
Love the long format videos
I wish I could play a part in amazing collaboration efforts like this...But I could never do those insane animates and draws...
Anime Ajay is one of those that highlights different animators, although he consistenly works with another youtuber called Totally not Mark so check him out as well
getinthemecha covers a lot of shows, animeajay for Dragon Ball although there's also some great non db content on his channel and The Canipa Effect
MankoMan is another very good example
Soul eater was one of my first and will always be one of my favorite anime
I really hope they make a season 2 after fire force finishes
Soul Eater was way ahead of its time.
Obnoxious fanservice is honestly the only problem I have with this show, people complain about the ending but I actually really enjoyed it.
wait until you see Fire Force
didn’t appreciate Blair enough until Tamaki was introduced in Fire Force
at least the fan service wasn’t so bad that it took away from the show at least
I remember this show having some jojo level poses
Very happy to see people like myself wanting a damn brotherhood revamp series.
I'll still be waiting.
11:15 good lord I remember this part that lip sync was absolutely out of this world
Can we PLEASE get a FMA:B treatment for Soul Eater, please? ;_;
I loved Soul Eater so much when I was younger, it was great!
Another banger!! Kinda curious what your opinion is about the Pain vs naurto fight and why it's so controversial!
Although the criticisms leveled at it were often ignorant blaming budget or laziness.
do you know who animated mosquito getting sliced? that part is so smooth
we still want proper adaptation there so much staff left there. Manga is gorgeous.
I think most here thought of this: "man I should rewatch Soul Eater"
Great and interesting video
