Greece today is not the same as it was then. People are struggling and life is difficult. We work to pay bills and support our children and there is nothing left over. Someone who gets paid in dollars and not euros cannot comprehend fully the daily struggle of the average Greek.

I live in Australia born in Evia Greece, our family left Greece many years ago. We grew up in Australia, work, marriage, children etc. After some short holidays to Greece, our plan was to make Greece our regular destination after retirement. We did just that. Retired now, have a nice apartment in Athens we live in Greece between 6-8 months of the year, couldn’t be happier, we have the best of both worlds, summer in Greece summer in Australia. Best decision of our lives.

@@rrocketman We live in Melbourne, I grew up there so all my friends and relatives are there, I love Melbourne, it has a large Greek population everything Greek you need you will find it except the Greek summer but that’s one of the reasons we travel to Greece each year. Having said that after spending half a year in Greece I do get a little homesick for Melbourne, I miss my friends and relatives. This is why for me it’s the best lifestyle, after being in Australia for quite a while we start to get an itch for Greece and the same when we’re in Greece after a long period we get itch for Australia. For us nothing is better than this.

I have been living in Scandinavia for the last 12 years and I am now thinking of moving back. After all these years of visiting back and forth and speaking with friends and family I have realized that being happy is a state of mind and being financially stable is a matter of frugality and money mentality.
Every time I visit Greece I see some people living lives that their salaries cannot support. For some it is normal to go out for a beer twice per week. Or buy 1-2 take away coffees every day. Or order take away souvlakia every week. Brand clothes, phones etc. And I see people doing this with 1000 euros salaries. Spending 20-30% of their monthly income in unnecessary expenses and then complain that the bills are too high. If you live such life in Scandinavia you go bankrupt in a week. People here stay in their homes for most of the year because it's dark, cold and expensive and they go to bed at 21.00. Their rent is almost half of their household income and they spend their money very carefully. Not to mention the minimum wage people. They don't even have a sunny day to walk outside so they literally live their life inside an apartment for most of the year.
In Greece you want to go out because of the nice weather. Tavernas are packed on a Tuesday night in November at 23:00 and the kids are running around. Greeks need to appreciate where they live. They look at the salaries we get in the north and they imagine a "Greek" life with a lot of money. Many Greeks don't realize how lucky they are to live every day and not just for 2 weeks per year during holidays. Or how much of a gift is to walk by the beach in November without spending a fortune or freezing to death.
Greece is still a tough economy yes, but I also see many Greeks who have developed their skills and do very well for themselves and their families. These people, included you, are the real winners!
Keep up the good work - you are an inspiration to watch!

Greek living in the US here! You have said everything PERFECTLY. Even though I don't live in Scandinavia, I live in fairly cold climate in Pennsylvania where the winters are very long and cold and the summers are usually very hot and humid. The most enjoyable season around here is fall. In fact late August through mid October is most comfortable here. In most areas in Greece they get like 280 days of sunshine per year where here in Pennsylvania we get less than 120... They simply don't know how lucky they are!

Some of us do, which is why we choose to avoid living in a cement monster city like Athens. :)
As the OP said, the real trick is to not be easy with your money. Bad habits of the locals include coffee twice per day, a packet of cigarettes, going out for street food or tavernas or going out at bars at least once per week and buying stuff they cannot afford, that have perfectly functional cheaper alternatives, like expensive phones/tablets or TVs. If they had invested on a healthier outlook (no coffee or cigarettes and excess drinks and street food) and they had invested their time and money on actual quality of live things (good food, a nice bicycle, having active hobbies etc) things would have been much better for everyone involved.

I’m a 60 year old Greek living in the US since I was 20. I left Greece because of the “high unemployment” back then, even though I never once attempted to find a job in Greece. All the friends I left behind somehow found a job and they’re doing pretty well today. I never regretted my decision. I’ve had a good life here in the US. Necessity forced me to put a lot of struggle and effort that I was not ready or willing to do in Greece. Even though I was a college graduate, I worked in the restaurant and construction business for a couple of years before landing the first job in my field. Something that in Greece was unthinkable and downright offensive, it appeared to me normal and logical in the US. I share your belief that if you’re motivated and hard working you’ll manage regardless where you live. By the way, many young Americans today have the same sense of entitlement that you find in Greece.

I'm glad that I returned to Greece a few years later. I have a relatively well paying job for the past 7 years, my non Greek husband also has a job of the same level and we're quite comfortable here in Greece, neither of us planning to leave any time soon. You are probably in the IT sector (same as me). We are on the same page on most of what you're saying, but there are two things I need to point out: first, the taxes here in Greece, reach a very high percentage very early on, which means you end up "contributing" a very large part of your income (around 40%) to the "community", which is the people that have access to the public money! and second, it took me around 20 years to be able to surpass in absolute numbers the income (before taxes) I enjoyed while I was in the USA (NOT adjusted for inflation). To put it another way: I am now making about the same money I used to make (in absolute numbers) 24 years ago in the US... if you are just an employee here in Greece (as opposed to free/independent contractor) you will never be able to enjoy any type of financial freedom that you can expect at least in US/Canada in high-tech positions. Still, I never regretted my decision to come back to Greece, and I enjoy every minute that life offers here!

Greece is very difficult to live in if like you and me have to be 100% mixed into society. There are many ex-pats here that live in their own bubbles, mostly retired, who never have any dealings with locals, it's a whole different world for them and us. I think if you want to come and live here you have to think logically. It's not the 'summer holiday' place that people see when on holiday. The amount of people that do not think things through, where they live, what they will do when they get older, how certain areas shut down during winter so many 'rose-tinted outlooks.

0:26 Just pickup whatever country of Central or Northern Europe and compare it to Greece. The issue with Greece is that even though you pay really high taxes, the social system is not effective.
This means that you end up spending money on private sector in order to get your job done.
If someone has above average income or income from abroad (usually 2-3 times the Greek one) then life is pretty easy in Greece.

I don’t think the point is that it’s not possible to live simply in Greece and that the same basic rules of life apply everywhere - the point is that it is a struggle in ways an outsider, especially from a western developed country, may never have imagined … and with unnecessary bureaucracy - you are MUCH better off earning overseas or at the very least not relying on a local pay check. This also corresponds to the usual Greek friendliness and warmth - this is a genuine part of their culture but it will erode and evaporate quickly when you need them more than they need you. Ask anyone who has done a “low skilled job” - from a seasonal service workers to nannies, etc and you will hear negative stories. Does this make them any better or worse? Of course not. But it does take the shine off and … let’s say balance expectations and make them more realistic. These are human beings after all. They have good points and bad points just like everyone else. When you speak with Greeks overseas on exactly this subject.. they nod sagely … they have seen these sides.

So, for the majority, with the minimum salary, working 10 hrs per day the least, you cannot preserve dignity. DIGNITY. The rest comments are personal and nothing more than that. For anyone knowing they are responsible for their life....they make up their mind. Only if it happened to have property or being corrupted or expat with foreign financial terms you can have some good level of living life. Greeks should have revolved but they just suffer...instead.

You are probably right that you do not have to see Greece only as a holiday destination, but it is also not as simple as saying that you have to have sorted out your finances. You do not live as the average Greek, in the sense that you do not depend on an employer and probably do not have to manage old inheritance or probably to deal with property law issues (buying, selling, renting) and disputes and related problems because inheritance can be shared among very many relatives. When you have to deal with these legal and administrative issues, you have to deal with a super complicated opaque set of laws and regulations written in Greek, and fees and potential fines of all kinds, that the average foreigner who is not completely integrated in Greek society does not have to deal with.

@@ioannischristou2362 The thing is that what you said is "on paper". The actual reality for laymen jobs is that they at best get paid, that is ACTUALLY GET EURO BILLS AT HAND, something along the lines of 700 to even 600€. Because that's what employers will pay "take it or leave it". Not to mention the unpaid (or in the best case scenario underpaid) extra working hours which is so widely common. And to top all that, all this with either no insurance coverage at all by the employers. The real deal here is to have some university degree, AND manage to find a strictly 8 hours work that does not scum you out considering paying off for your insurance/pension scheme as well. While on the contrary, there's hundreds of thousands of people, if not millions, that are getting hired on a FOUR hour contract, to do at least 6 hours work, on a schedule that prohibits them from being able to get hired for another 4 hour work elsewhere and in the end of the day those people have to get by with a net income of 400 or even 350/300€.
Considering the "old appartment" option you talked about, it's not as peachy as you make it sound. First of all "old appartments" come with shortcomings: they either are in degraded buildings or/and areas, probably noisy as hell, have no central heating or even no air conditioning appliances installed, with plumbing and electrical wiring in questionable status, and most importantly are not efficient considering temperature conservation because of their original materials they were constructed with (mainly windows and doors). In other words, you will have to get insanely large bills in order to keep them either warm or cool enough during winter and summer (which depending the area, is no joke anymore). Not to mention that yes probably you can find such, but how about they're too distant from work and you need to either spend a significant amount of time (and money) in order to commute. And all that you mentioned is more or less OK for a person between, say, 25 and 35 that lives on his own, with no other responsibilities to others whatsoever and can live in 20 square meters. When we're talking about families with children in which maybe not both parents have a job (because of having to raise the children), things are very different in all ways. So, in conclusion, don't be too hasty to say in an adamant fashion "minimum salary is almost 1000€ and you can also find houses for 300€ and it's mostly the media that hypes up stuff" while the majority of cases have to overcome the fact that usual minimum INCOME per person is 600-700€ and probably the average rent is around 500€ for 50sm. Yeah you should bust your ass to make more than that 6-7 no matter what, and possibly live with others as well in order to pay 2-3 for residence just to be able to make ends meet, but that's a whole different story.

Even Athens is good to live. In the past I hated the buildings built in concrete in the 60s, the 70s, the 80s you can find everywhere in Athens (they built that because a lot of population came from Greek regions to live in Athens). But I discovered that you can find absolutely everything in those neighborhoods (a lot of shops, a lot of Greek fast food restaurants etc). And if you have a problem you will always find a Greek to help you. I'm not saying all Greeks are good people but many people are warm and ready to help and very simple people. And Greek culture is so incredible. Ancient, byzantine, moderne Greek culture, all this creates an incredible mixed heritage (music, litterature etc) and a lifetime is not enough to study if fully).

Hi, really enjoy your videos and perspective, I'm a Greek, who grew in London, lived in Greece for 10y either side of that and now been in the US for over 25y (which is/has been the absolute hardest most expensive country and most dangerous country I've ever lived in btw!!) so I'm thinking of moving back, one of the many questions that you could answers how do the taxes work on your foreign earned income in Greece and the country of income origin..would you be able to do a video on this?

Hi I'm a German living in Greece. Income abroad that had ben taxed outside of Greece already should not be taxed again in Greece, as long as there's a bilateral agreement with the respective country.
So there's no general answer for this, you have to check what kind of agreement on that behalf the country you earn money in has with Greece. The Greek embassy in your country can give you information about this.

The point of the phrase "you should only go to live in Greece if you have your finances and job sorted out" , is that simply there are no jobs in Greece (huge unemployment) and the jobs that exist don't pay that good in order to have a decent life.. Soo, I don't think you can say that for EVERY country in the world...

    • @helgaioannidis9365
      @helgaioannidis9365 3 місяці тому +2

I do have a job in Greece and all my friends have.
There's jobs, but people from Athens don't want to do them. Imagine where I live they've been hiring Roma women from the camp, because they can't find enough staff. It's an island and people from Athens don't want to work 6 months in a kitchen or cleaning hotel rooms with only 2 days off per month.
I don't blame them, but saying there's no jobs is wrong. There's jobs, but mostly a kind of jobs many Greeks don't want to do.

Hello friend! Greetings from Athens! Thank you for your loving our Country and your videos who help us build a better mindset. I want to ask you something.
With your knowledge and experience can you help us, by making a guide of how to obtain skills and pursue digital jobs from Greece as a Greek?
I am in my mid 30s, made mistakes and have failures in the past, now working jobs like delivery, which can bring you an income of around 1800 per month if you work from 10 to 12 hours day, 6 days a week. But even these cannot be found easily outside Athens and here life is also very expensive. So for someone who want to move to the countryside permanently, do you think it is feasible to find some kind of digital internet job being Greek and working remotely that can generate an income of about 2000euros? I have grown without the concept of internet jobs and now I am trying to understand it, in the limited time I have during my day, but it feels very vague to me. Could you please make videos guiding us on what to try and learn, where to start and how to find and apply for jobs like these? Thank you in advance! I need help, I want to get out of here but I am stuck!

As a second generation Canadian, and a person of Greek origin who has also visited Greece more than 10 times over the last 15 years, I have a pretty good idea as to what is “wrong“ with Greece. It is a victim of its own beauty. What makes it so incredible to visit - the mountains, the islands, the extraordinary ocean views which are phenomenal for swimming - is also limiting. Here, in Canada, I can literally walk out my door and within five minutes be surrounded by lush greenery along a walking trail that is just so calming and relaxing it nourishes my wellness. Mentally. Physically. Spiritually. I cannot comprehend the vast humanity which waste its time on phones, and screens, and apps and pointless interactions. I am also a person who reads prolifically and yet I work eight hours per day, and I still have a healthy relationship with my girlfriend. And a dog! By comparison, in Greece, unless you live right alongside those scenes I noted earlier, you’re just surrounded by urban busyness and I think it’s nauseating. I could be wrong, of course, but I do have family in Athens and that is what I have observed. Finally: there’s literally a city park where I grew up that is about one third the size of some Greek islands I have actually visited.

I 've written this in other videos of yours. Since the 80's, when the socialists came to power, the average Greek became too entitled. The 2008 economic crisis (which we fully understood after 2011) destroyed all this utopian bubble, where a waiter could get a loan for a 200hp car and a duplex flat with his grandma as guarantor (among other crazy things) or a nail artist considered a two week vacation to some island as a patrimonial prerogative, not to mention that EVERYONE had to study Business Administration and no one wanted to work in the fields or become a plumber. So, still, today, in 2024, the vast majority of Greeks is complaining because the VAT for "stay in the cafe" coffee (not takeaway or supermarket) went back to 24% as it was intended because they might have to cut back from the 2 or 3 coffees they bought per day! Which doesn't even make sense, since the takeaway vat remains the same! So, no, Greece is not only for vacation, but is also is not, anymore, a paradise for laziness and under the table state funds munching, it is not for people who think that with no skillset they can live in Athens like lords.
