I’m Greek but I’m living in the US since college. I always find it funny that Greeks have a pessimistic view of Greece while Americans think that the US is the best country in the world. They’re both wrong. In my experience the average Greek has a much better life than an American, all things considered. I think the people that think this way are the ones that haven’t travelled much out of their country and they get brainwashed by the local sentiment. I used to be like that when I was living in Greece. But believe me, the grass always looks greener on the other side. Appreciate what you have and you like most and don’t let negativity poison you.
My relatives in Greece haven't travelled abroad because they can't afford to, they live pay cheque to pay cheque and even that isn't enough. Australians always say the same thing......that the average Greek lives a better life than we do in Australia, but they have never actually asked a Greek or lived in their shoes for a day. They holiday each year in Greece in nice hotels, rent cars, eat out every day and night and romanticise life in Greece because they can afford to go there for 5 weeks every year, spend $20,000 and live large. That's not the life of the average Greek, far from it, in fact.

It is best we compare apples to apples because I’m certain there are millions of Americans, Australians, etc that live paycheck to paycheck that have never left their hometown let alone their country. IMO an average greek family with average income for greek standards lives better overall than an average american family. Yes the average american family has an income much higher than the greek but if you compare lifestyles there is simply no comparison. In the US we do nothing but work. The Greeks work enough to get by. I’m 57 and about half of my friends in Greece have retired already! In the US the question is if retirement is affordable to keep up with the lifestyle we live!
Living in America here, not sure where you live and what kind of people you hang out with, but many of the people I know are despondent with this country and where it's heading. I lived in Greece for four years a long time ago, and it was way better there.
And of course, I LOVE living in Greece, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else... I am a Greek born abroad, I am living here 34 years now, I have chosen to live here and I don't regret any day of my life here, despite the many issues we have as a country. Who can mention a place without any problem??? He would lying... So, to all those who write sheets full of negativity about Greece, you either shut up, or work to improve things, or just leave and be happy elsewhere. Healthy criticism with ideas and proposals for improvement is welcome.... Plain hateful negativity isn't... So ante kai koureyteite, to put it mildly....
the fakelaki thing is fading away, at least in the health sector. I have experienced many (young mainly) doctors that deny any attempt of "tipping", and regard it as an insult. Stray dogs are slowly also fading, in fact i haven't seen a stray don in my area for quite some months (i live in Athens). Cats, it's a different story, they're everywhere, but i love them and they don't pose a danger. About rubbish, it's all about education and what people are tought in their houses. I don't have any hope, kids are brought up without any respect to anything, no fear of anyone, the whole society is going downhill in a very ugly way.
I think the younger generation are more principed to some extent, they do care about animals and i also remember getting into a taxi in Athens with a young driver, i was impressed by the hygiene, no-smoke and not pushing extra fees compared to older generations taxi drivers that are bit careless and a bit dishonest about their fees.

What I hate about this otherwise beautiful country is damned stupid graffiti everywhere. Even here in the first seconds of the video. It is on walls of friendly churches, on majestic rocks. Literally everywhere. Yes, there is absolutely stunning street art on the walls of big cities. I admire it. But that crap... It looks like youngsters try to destroy everything that they are able to reach. It was told in another video how Greece provides children with a very good environment to grow, how great it is to raise children in Greece. I definitely agree with that. But how come Greeks cannot teach their children to respect their own homeland? Why are natives being raised here so eager to make the land they grow up on look like a landfill? It blows my mind off. I just cannot get to understand it.

There are no proper families in Greece the last 20 years. Parents got tired trying to survive every single in a non stop crisis environment. They don't have the courage anymore. So they let their kids do whatever they want without checking or caring about them. The new parents don't care to teach their kids respect, manners and other important things. They just care to make money to survive and provide food. Things have changed drastically in the last decade. Families are not like what they used to be.

My mom lives here in the USA all day long the craziness about the news! I tell her “ you live in the gun capital of the world! Why you even talking crazy about Greece?” They get pissed when I tell them (we come often) “ stop complaining about life here come to America and see life through our eyes! Wishing our children ‘ be safe ‘l daily that’s not normal life! Greece is FAR from perfect but I regret not bringing my boys there when they were little! BTW my kids speak fluently and they tell me “ the people are genuinely nice”! I think it’s also cos the locals (in Alimos area of Athens) we are from abroad they are proud to see 2nd generation not your typical Greek Americans! I've been living in the UK for the last 34 years and in London in particular in a great area. For all the things I'm grateful in the UK coming back to Greece hopefully will be my next adventure within the next few years as travelling around the world I've realised that there is no better place to live in despite the negatives. I've completed my ground up renovation of my ancestral home in Evia for the last five years and I'm looking forward to a simpler village life. My Italian wife is also learning Greek that gives me hope that our move will be sooner rather than later. I appreciate your calling out the Air BnB problem in Greece and its nefarious effect on the local social fabric of cities and towns. We here in Annecy in the French Alps (not a a big town) have to deal with overtourism and a dire housing problem while almost 3000 Air BnB rentals have turned the place into a Disneyesque tourist attraction for consumers who leave their waste beside overflowing garbage containers and all along the shoreline of our beautiful lake. Much like the woman in your excellent video, I too go on cleaning binges during my daily walks, picking up stray bottles and discarded take-away pizza cartons. I simply cannot understand what is wrong with people.
Hello again from the Southern US! I see a lot of the same issues in the United States as well. The United States is a wonderful country, but faces a lot of similar issues as most other countries in Europe. Overconsumption of news media and talk shows, loss of patriotism, litter, housing issues. Sure, the issue is spread out over such a large area, but it’s still a problem. Corruption is certainly the biggest problem in this country as in many first world nations. For the US in particular it’s the companies that cause the biggest problems (and yes they try dodging taxes too). I’m not sure about strays, but I know bad owners contribute to dog attacks in the US more so than strays. Certain areas have stray cat problems (my university’s area to give an example), but over all, local spay/neuter programs have helped. Every country has pros and cons. There is no perfect country or government. I absolutely love your channel! It’s very informative, and the way you present things is very clear and simple. I hope to visit Greece soon and live there some day. Maybe once I move there, I’ll make my own channel about my unique experience! Καλή συνέχεια! ❤

From a Greek living in Canada.... 1. We are also constantly bombarded with American (and Canadian) news. It is what it is. You can turn it off. 2. Canadians are becoming more and more cynical about living here each day. We have large numbers of professionals and general people leaving the country daily because it is too expensive to practice or live here, there is a housing shortage, and the "Canadian way of life" faded into the background years ago 3. Not as much of an issue as in Greece but it still happens as it does everywhere in the world 4. The amount of McDonald's and Tim Hortons coffee cups flying around outside is alarming. Again, the simpler and cleaner Canadian way of life is gone and the overall cleanliness of our cities is deteriorating each day. Local governments are managing more with much less and it shows on our streets around the country 5. Good luck owning and AirBnB in Canada with these interest rates... ha! We also have a nation-wide housing crisis. Again, Greece is not special in this scenario 6. Bribery and corruption is all over the planet. Come on now... 7. I love your channel and I am so glad I found it In my opinion, too many Greeks have the "xorio mindset" and when they come to either Canada and/or the USA they cling desperately to their roots and usually find out that North American and the "American (or Canadian) Dream" is actually a fabricated commercial from the 1950's and doesn't exist anymore. I've had many friends who have had family come here from Greece only to leave 1-2 years after and go back to Greece due to not being able to find work, living here is too expensive, and the "go to work, go home, sleep, wake up, go to work, go home, sleep" lifestyle isn't what they're used to coming from a more social climate "sthn Ellada..." I don't know where you are in the country, but here in southwestern Ontario (around Toronto) it is a chaotic mess each and every day and especially with the cost of living day-to-day. Him going to the water for his morning swim is outstanding and I love that he is living in a good way. It's beautiful to watch. I am so proud of him even though I do not know him. Another thing I didn't mention was, at the moment, it costs about $1,500.00 (CDN) to fly from Toronto to Athens and again, with the cost of everything, going to Greece to see family and/or friends is not on my radar. Travel for most Canadians (inside or outside) is off the radar as well. We cannot afford to travel as much or freely as we once did. Thank goodness for FaceTime and WhatsApp, I guess. These videos are wonderful and I am glad you are enjoying them as well. They offer me a small "break" from reality "ston Kanada..." Cheers!
@@ThunderDome74 I am from Montreal. The cost of living here is not as bad as in Toronto or Vancouver but it's getting there. I went to Greece last month for 2 weeks and it cost a fortune. Definitely not something you can do every year. Concerning the flight it cost me $1045(CDN). But I booked just a few weeks before. My cousin on the other hand booked from March and she paid $1600 (CDN). Everything he mentions in the video I experienced first hand, especially with my friends and relatives there. They believe that everywhere else is much better than in Greece. They talk about their struggles never once thinking to ask how thing are for you. They just assume that things are great for you because you live abroad. They should come and experience a Canadian winter. I feel at times that Daniel is more Greek than the Greeks in Greece. He is a true Φιλέλληνας.

I enjoy your outlook and positivity of Greece.Yes there's corruption, yes nowhere is perfect, but YES things can change if you remain optimistic and just focus on the positive. The country itself is infinitely plentiful to help fuel you with positivity. People should stop focusing on other people who do bad things and just focus on themselves and on what little they can do to make where they live a slightly better place. No judgement on anyone feeling negatively of course but I just suggest for their own sake, to try the best they can and focus on the good because you will just end up feeling depressed all the time... take care of yourselves! ❤🩹

Having lived in UK, Greece, and Canada, i can safely say the grass is never greener on the other side. We all have a choice of how to live when we get out of bed though. Needless to say i should listen to myself. My uncle in Greece said to me 2 weeks ago, take the word Hellas and take the a and s off and you're left with Hell. It sums up the love hate relationship us with Greek blood in us have with the country. Be smart, people. Always choose hope! It is never too late to re-create society so that it works for everyone. As a Greek, living in the capital, I confirm the issues depicted in this video. The fact that you mention these issues as a big concern, shows that you have been incorporated into the greek way of thinking, making you one of us. We are many with the same concerns,but apparently we aren't that effective in bringing change.
As a foreigner living in Athens, I agree with this video, and love it! In Greece I found my eftyhia! Now I will share what are a few thing I personally hate about living in Greece: 1. Agree on the part about news and negativity. It is a southern European problem. I am from Croatia, I have lived in Portugal and I have family members and great friends in Italy, Serbia, and Bosnia as well. In all these countries including Greece, the issue is the same: people are brainwashed that Northern European countries are inherently better because they have better politicians. Complaining about politicians as if they were not just a consequence of the common traits is a result of that “small individual” mentality, where, for example, the garbage thing is a result of the lack of the efficient law enforcement rather than lack of good manners. 2. Driving culture. I just hate how much people in Athens use their cars to go everywhere, how often the traffic is dense, and how every attempt from local governance to reduce driving lanes in favor of walking ones results in the protests of these, again, “small individuals” who just need to drive their cars everywhere. Not mentioning parking on all kinds of places, driving motorbikes into the sideways, not respecting basic rules of the road. 3. Forest fires. Again, it is always a result of some stupid act going wrong. Some retarded individual just needed to throw his cigarette somewhere. Someone just needed to light up a grill outside. Someone just needed to burn the scraps. Or, someone needed fireworks for some stupid celebrations. 4. The belief that Greece is expensive. No, it is not. Try going for holidays in Croatia. You will find underwhelming food and accommodation for exorbitant prices. In most of the European countries people pay a lot for anything fresh or whole food. In Athens, you fill your friedge with fresh fruit and vegetables for 2 people for a week from laiki for 20 euros. Things such as toothpastes shampoos, or packages food such as pasta are indeed cheaper in bigger countries.
I'm watching from Dublin Ireland. Visit Greece every year! Love it & the people, I agree with you about the rubbish and stray un-neutered cats & dogs as much as I love animals, they really need to be neutered & dogs shown more compassion in Greece. I've spent entire holidays cleaning the beaches I swim in, cigarette butts & plastic bottles everywhere, Ive seen entire 'greek' families come to a beach and leave ALL their rubbish there including beer bottles 😢 I watch & like all your videos and I also like your music. Keep going your channel is great.
I love everything about Greece except one thing...the fires in the summer. That turns me off. I have almost the exact same problems where I Iive including the fires, unfortunately.
I am a Greek that has grown up in Greece until the age of 15 years old. Every country has its problems. I think people get to choose what gives them a better life. Greece is very beautiful ofcource. I might disagree with some things but it will always be in my heart. I had the opportunity to come back and work in Greece when I was 26 and when I was 29. 5 years all together. I cant say I had a good experience. I think its very hard to work for a Greek boss. I am glad though, as free humans have the opportunity to choose where we want to live. And that's great. It actually up to us to make a good life wherever we are......Different lifestyles suits different people. The Fakelaki or Bribery is more common when dealing with the Public Health System or anything to do with Government processes. It is usually needed if you want to "Speed-Up the process". Another name is also known as "Ladoma" which came up since in the old times they used to give containers of Olive-Oil as payment.
Being Greek and having lived in England and Sweden for almost a decade I can assure you that those who think everything is bad in Greece have no idea whatsoever how life in northern Europe actually is. Most Greeks that live abroad dteam of coming back to Greece some day. Btw, the stray dogs and rubbish issues are not the same all over Greece. You most probably have worthless local administration, which does happen often but definetely not all over Greece...

Smoking indoors has been banned in Greece for 18 years. This is pretty well observed from what we have seen. Smoking is permitted in outdoor seating unless the owner has established the entire property as non smoking. While some non smokers may find outdoor smoking bothersome, it is not against the law.
I am a Greek that lives 6 months in Athens and 6 months in Sweden for the last 6 years . Every time I come back to Athens I am more disappointed with the things I experience . I agree with you about the news . They love to dramatize and terrorize . It doesn’t affect me though because I realize what they are trying to do . What affects me is how dangerous it is to live in Athens !!!!!!! A stop sign and a red light means nothing !!! A one way street is not a way one street !!!! It terrifies me to drive amongst irresponsible people . The stray cats that people continuously feed which results into multiplication is also hazardous to our health !! The pigeons that have taken over our balkonies because some people feel they are pet friendly are a huge health bomb . The trash and cigarette buds everywhere isn’t a nice view either . And I could go on and on about situations that easily could be solved . On the other hand Sweden is completely different BUT is very boring !
Daniel, I'm Swedish, living in Bulgaria since 1996. I travel and work all over Balkans, and it is the same problem, identical, in all of the countries, and it will never change. I find Greece somewhat better and will settle in Kavala. Keep in contact. Lars
1. News can be ignored personally. I do it in my country, so I don't think it would a problem for me specifically, but I get it, people lack of critical thinking. 2. Negativity about own country - the same problem is in Poland due to historic reasons. That slowly changes but in overall, Poles don't appreciate Poland as foreigners do. 3. Stray animals - that is a problem that was solved in Poland years ago. 4. Rubbish - a pity, but I saw more rubbish in Italy... which was surprising, because they were everywhere, even in touristic destinations. This is a problem of most southern countries. The places I visited in Greece (Crete) was not so bad, so I guess it depends on a place. Hopefully this improves in time. I don't even know when or how it happened that Poland became so clean. It just did, naturally, so when we go abroad, we are negatively surprised, because we are no longer used to it. 5. I still managed to rent Airbnb in the remote village with natives - it was awesome! So tourists have a choice. Living there permanently - I understand how this could be a problem. Nice places are taken for rent and became too expensive, so you are forced to live more remote. 6. Bribery and corruption - again, we had that many years ago and somehow fixed it. Too bad that many countries don't address it. I remember how government introduced strong laws against corruption and it all changed in a few years. From the usual "gift" to everyone, it was gone - clear prices, fair treatment. I think you omit obvious cons that people from colder countries experience - not insulated and not heated houses that make the mild winter into something horrible, even colder that we experience. Tied with the winter emptiness and void - makes winter unbearable and the biggest con for me. I would love to live in Greece from April to October, the rest of the time I would prefer to be in Poland, in constant heated place. Or ideally, if I could move my house in Greece ;) - then I could live there the whole year.
Great video. Most issues we also have in Italy and several other "old" countries I have visite. Do these issues make living in these countries undesirable? No. Can things be better? Yes. So I feel that we'll balanced content such as this are valuable.
You know what? We live in Southwest Florida, and almost all of the awesome things that used to make Florida great are disappearing fast. It's overcrowded, and the conservative government is making life here very unpleasant. My wife is Greek and our greatest desire in our life is to get to Greece and stay. We don't care about the few minor problems in Greece. All that matters is that it is HOME. We will sell our house and cars and buy a big sailboat, and then we are coming home to Ελλάδα.
the greek government is way more conservative than Florida's government; go to California to enjoy the utopia of fully liberal government; complaining about how Florida's government makes life hard for the people after 3 years of covid insanity pushed by all "liberal" governors (on top of the federal government) is hard to grasp... "All that matters is that it is HOME", "coming home to Ελλάδα" - you actually sound pretty conservative yourself, only greek conservative, not American conservative...
greece is great as any balkan and e euro countries if you can take your US work remote keeping the dollar salary even if only part time 40k a year is king over here, or you have skills that are rare and in high demand otherwise you have to go into the corrupt ways to earn every euro you can to make it the month
1) Fully agree on the news, so much sensationalism, what I do is read and I curate what I want so I focus and read more in depth on the positive stuff like infrastructure projects etc, but I just check headlines on the more negative stuff I find you still stay informed but don’t get drawn into it the same way as when you watch it on TV. The US is also horrible with this one. But entertaining for people that don’t live there so I tend to watch on youtube. As it’s far removed and it’s more like a drama series and doesn’t affect me. 2) people being negative is a pet peeve of mine everywhere on the world, and I find I see it in people that are less travelled, I just don’t put up with it and stop the conversation I just say I don’t want to hear it sorry. 3) trash, yes but it has improved and you are seeing a lot more people having their sensitivities of cleaning up. You should have seen how much trash was around in the 90’s. People even collect their cigarette butts at the beach. Nevertheless much room for improvement. We all need to do our part and call proper out when we see something or show by example.
Also on the stray dogs., before the Olympics there used to be sworms of dogs in Athens everywhere groups of 20 dogs or more full out gangs, chasing cars etc. you couldn’t walk down certain streets once a dog almost jumped through the window of my car as he was chasing me down the street. They rounded all the dogs up before the Olympics and I don’t so as many anymore. I don’t even remember the last time I saw a dog chase a car. It was like their national sport
Very spot on and a very novel take! And by the way, re. 5:19 - they are already educated about this (over and over and over: at school, from the news, from the internet etc.) Sometimes education is overrated. What is needed is a campaign and it needs, not just the government, but the entire political regime to support it. Everyone is responsible for this situation: locals and visitors, simple citizens and officials. employees and businessmen, children and parents.
well said...im 50 years and im greek...i have an oppinion and nobody and nothing it will change it....greece is the most beautiful place on earth with the worse politicians..and the worse citizens (the most at least) same time.,..dont get be fooled from theirs smile and kindness ..most are bads...other things they say front of u other things behind u...its so sad to have have a paradise on earth and to not have the right people on it.
You know it is funny, my parents are both natives of Greece but they feel more pessimistic about Greece. Me being born abroad have a very different and positive perception of living in Greece. Its interesting to see how perspectives change based on where you are born.
Greeks aren’t really animal people. In my experience. I am very much a pet owner and I take great care of them. It’s depressing to see these poor animals
I have considerable problems with stray dogs when I am riding the bicycle. In general I do not fear dogs at all and can handle aggressive dogs but on the bicycle there is no solution.
When i walked up to palamidi last august i came back down with two full plastic bags of rubbish that i collected because i love my culture and have deep respect for the land after all greece has endured through the ages, it's very tragic to see how careless people are, absolutely respect is becoming more non existant in todays world and the actions are a reflection.
I'm more like a negative guy, and gotta point out that the news in Greece are literally glorifying the country's situation right now. Someone watching and believing the news right now should believe he/she is living in the most blessed country in the world... Just watch the statistics for freedom of speach in public media and it points out. Also some of the problems you mentioned are mostly related to Athens and Thessaloniki, the main metropolitan areas of Greece where pretty much 70% of Greeks live. In a lot of things you are right that living in a town like Nafplio or similar is nice and calm and close to nature without many bigger problems than other societies. But gotta think that for most professions nowadays there's no job to be found in the country side, therefore we got internal immigration, that gradually made our 2 big cities full of problems. And what affects the 70% of the population (specifially the working ages) is what moves so much negativity I guess.
One thing i personally don't like about greece is drivers. They don't want to follow the rules and they threaten pedestrians every time they cross the zebra crossing or near a traffic light. Tourists are always told by greeks to be warned and cautious in the roads when drivers should learn to give way to pedestrians.
I love Greece. Have been living here for 20 years now. Something I hate about Greece is the panellinies. My daughter did them this year and she did very well, but the last 2 years she had to study so hard and it's all bulimic learning by heart. In 6 months most of what they studied will be forgotten. I think elementary schools in Greece are good and I think Greek teachers actually see themselves mostly as educaters, not just as someone who fills kid's brains with knowledge. But the whole thing about panelling es is sick!!!
As a parent i understand the pressure of panellinies, but dont forget if you pass the test you enter 4 years of university study free, rather than having huge student loans like the kids in America
@@lenaannis8787 as a German who studied in Italy I can tell you in both countries there's nothing as exhausting as panellinies, yet in both countries students have access to very good education without needing student loans. The USA are really not what we compare with here in Europe, rather countries like the Netherlands, Finland and Denmark when it comes to education.

I'm a greek living in the UK for over 30 years and I agree 100% with you. Only I could not survive in Greece and I'm grateful to the UK that gave me the opportiunity to make a living according to my moral code. I hope you have more stamina than me. Have spent a lot of time in Greece the last 3 years and I find that very few things have changed and not for the better. I was collecting trash from the beaches then, there's even more trash now. Corruption is rife not only in the health sector. And I see the greek kids to grow up thinking that all this is normal and that there is no other way of doing things. Good luck! BTW I ended up renting a house and have already gathered 3 dogs and a cat so I'm desperate to leave because I will end up with more...Anybody wants a dog?
We are living in one of the most beautiful countries in the world...(if not the best of all) Nothing will change my mind about my beautiful country no matter how hard some people try for the opposite. The worst thing I hate is politicians.They are the curse of Greece. About pollution... education starts from the family before school.When our young generations don't have values, nothing can change.I love animals, but I hate seeing them causing problems and suffering in life. Bribery will exist as people 'exercise' it to doctors.We dont have hard laws that will put bad people in their places, and when citizens see that nobody is punishment, they will keep going against laws.
as a greek having been able to visit other countries(via work) even latin america, in my opinion greeks(the majority of them), somehow really have to visit first their neighboring countries such as turkey and bulgaria and then other countries either in europe or in latin america or even usa to properly re-evaluate their own country and see that is not as what the news media portray it to be. I stopped watching TV in general cos I feel tv stations and news media in general are very corrupt and always give you their truth that suits their economical/political agenda. I try to stay positive and if I dont understand sth, I ask multiple greek friends that have actual degrees in that specific field I have questions.
Bless that woman picking up the trash. I was honestly shocked that the road (Πολυζωίδου) up to Arvanitias beach was an utter trash heap. Even at the beach people had thrown garbage on either side of the walkway. (Visited Aug/2024). You find scenes like this throughout Greece on rural roads. We have trash in my country as well, (not nearly as much), so I simply occasionally take a bag with me on some of my morning walks to pick some up.
You are practically Greek after all these years. Everything you pointed out is exactly like that. I (more or less) watch your videos and I agree with most of what you say. This is a good place to be, in the end. We don't realize it. When things are bad, they are BAD, irrelevant where you are (and I've traveled to a few countries to understand this). We are not in the worst place for this. My 1st son (16), wants to move to Toronto, even before actually deciding what he is going to do for a living. Seeing all those super-rich youtubers, he thinks he will find perfection and the American dream, the Canadian way. A couple of people from Canada we met the last couple of years, tried to reason with him. :D Things are good wherever you are WHEN your problems are already solved. We came to Nafplio a month ago, would love to have bumped with you, but didn't happen. :D

There are no countries with just positive things and no negatives. As a Greek, I do not know whether we have more negatives in Greece than other countries but I do not believe that. You just survive like everywhere.
For me there is really only 1 - the smoking. It’s bad enough that a huge % smokes - it’s when I am trying to eat that everyone is smoking at the taverna/cafe/restaurant whatever. FYI - In Aus we have a more formalised φακελάκι program. If you a see specialist most procedures will incur an out of pocket cost. This is no different to a φακελάκι.
That’s a bit of a stretch. In the US too if you go to a specialist you will have to pay a larger co pay and possibly some out of pocket expenses. I don’t really consider that a bribe. By the way smoking indoors in public places has been banned in Greece for a long time. If someone reports a violation of this ordinance it will be investigated and the owner of the establishment will be subject to a large fine.

All Balkan peninsula countries are doing the same, particularly watching the news too much, and all of them are very often talking negatively about their countries, mainly about governments not really about countryside. And yes all of us have a problem with stray dogs and rubbish. As a matter of fact every single thing you're mentioning here is same problem in Serbia (my origin country), Romania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Ahahahahaha.... as a Greek living in the UK this is the main thing I complain. The lack of good news coverage. I'll tell you what the problem is in a country like the UK that does an excellent job with foreign affairs journalism but terrible with internal. Scandals not only go unnoticed they even get normalised. In the UK for years, politicians blamed the EU for anything going wrong. No matter how unrelated to the EU, to get out of trouble. The media never held them in any effective way accountable for that. In Greece, they would have torn them a new one. The flip side is that countries like Greece feel they have far more corruption than they do when compared with abroad, whereas here in the UK they live in a fantasy land by which they think they have far less corruption than other European countries. They are happier and prouder though for it!
I'm from Serbia and amazingly everything u wrote is 100% true . You literaly described all Balkan countries. Macedonia, Serbia , Bulgaria,Romania,Croatia,Bosnia.Albania.
What you talked about is true, and it reflects the corruption of politicians on society, and there is a lot that we can talk about, but I love Greece and its people despite that.
The garbage issue in Greece is not due to the lack of ability to collectively put them in a bin but its always seen as a task for someone else to care about. My father noticed it first hand in our village, in Kyveri, there is a Green Trash bin about 10-15 meters away from our house. This women, if you want to call her that, finished her apple and just tosses it on the ground in front of our house. My father, who knew she dropped the remaining apple, told the woman in Greek " Miss you dropped something" and which she replied " Its Ok" as she passed by that Green Trash bin. Its a mentality of those that are ignorant in Greece that truly upset me. Ohhh and don't get me started on the Stray dogs and the Shit that you see on the street. I always find it funny how Greeks who have immigrated abroad, are always coming to videos, posts or whatever about Greece and writing negative things about the country. If you were truly happy about your life in the place you went, then why do you still bother to spend energy about Greece.

It's so good that you're talking about the stray dogs & the rubbish. I want to move to Crete but I'm very worried about how I'll cope with the abandoned, abused dogs. I think it will be very difficult emotionally. There are laws to protect the dogs but they're not enforced. I think the Greeks have really let themseves down where the stray dogs are concerned, just ask Takis of Takis Shelter. Thank you for talking about this problem.
For the rubbish, it really, really depends on the area of Greece or within the city in which you live in. For example, in my suburb in Athens, it's not a big deal, as it's mostly clean, but there are still a few empty plots of land that are concentrating some rubbish. As for that lady, she isn't the only one. I actually gather rubbish (the recyclables) and throw them in the bins. Many actually do that, as I've seen it.
I think seeing as Greese is not yr country of origin, you speak and explain very fairly about Greese. Every country has negative points but its always good to hear so you can go to that place and see for yr self .
I am negative about my country because it is pushing me away. I can't go out to eat , I can't go for a vacation to an island, I must only work work work long hours to afford my rent and bills. My country is for tourists, not for me. Hope that helped.

The claim Greeks see the news as the truth couldn't be further from the truth. Most Greeks watch the news but distrust it. I for one don't trust practically anyone in the news, including foreign news, ever since so many so-called journalists ridiculously start claiming Skopjans are "ethnic" Macedonians. That's like claiming they are Athenians or Spartans. To make matters even worse , ever since Skopians turned into ancient Macedonians, masses of liars in the media, human rights groups, and politicians all unethically evade to hide their mistake of recognizing the frauds as "Macedonians".
I think talking negative things about the country is not bad as long as they are aimed to change something. Some negative things that I find in Greece as foreigner quite often a surprise for Greeks with whom I am dealing with. And I had discovered that they just do not know that some things could be done differently…

All the money we make doing Air BNB in Philippines 🇵🇭, we are spending on vacation in Greece 🇬🇷 lol ❤ - currently staying at an Air BNB in beautiful Kalamata - My wife is a really good cook and Air BNB let’s people take a break from eating g out all the time and makes the trips better than just hotels and indigestion! For many home owners that do Air BNB they are making enough money to improve their lives ( and go on vacations too maybe 😊)
My compliments, as a Greek who’s lived his life entirely abroad, we the Greeks of diaspora value the country more than those that remained. It’s unfortunate but often I hear the most nostalgic people left Greece and those who remained do not realize what a wonderful country it is. Thanks for focusing on the positive.

Many choose to leave and never return, as over 500k of the best and brightest have done since the financial crisis. I’m not criticizing the ones who stayed just stating facts. Look around you, people are frustrated in Greece, especially the ones who can see beyond the hypocrisy that successive governments sell as progress. When regular people are still making 500 euros a month while politicians milk the system, why would those who remain be better off. It’s not an indictment of those who remained, just reality. I'm planning to return. If we want Greece to get better we can't all be living in the diaspora. We need too return and help the country out.Not everyone as we still need a diaspora for lobby reasons and etc but a large percenatge of us need to return to help the patrida and what our ancestors fought for in 1821
Well said. Might I add: 1. F*ckin' graffiti everywhere. Mind you, graffiti can be awesome. But taking a spray can and just smearing almost EVERY free surface without purpose or reason? No. Same with posters, stickers etc. 2. Following the previous one: Rampant vandalism. From damaging public property (traffic signs, park benches, trash cans, ANYTHING) to keying someone's car "just because"... it's just wrong. And so shameful. I'm gonna be 44 in about a month and I've been saying this since my early teens: Greece is a blessed place (not in the religious sense), but with people who do not truly appreciate or love it. Sure, not all of them. But I dare say a majority.

I agree that there is a problem with strays but I don't agree with the killing "shelters" policy they have abroad in many "civilized" countries. Killing the strays in order not to have to see and deal with them on the streets, is not a solution either. And I am only saying this because that's how they clean the streets from the strays abroad. And this is not acceptable here. Of course, there should be good practices for the welfare of animals and people as well, and the municipalities should follow the law and do their job as they are supposed to. State malfunction is the real problem right now.
All countries of the World are facing various problems not only Greece. Greece has his shadow site and his sun site like all other countries. Someone that has lived abroad for a long time or have travelled a lot is certainly aware of this. Greeks ( especially the young Generation) have to learn the pros of their country to appreciate and at the same time not to complain regarding the problems that the country is facing but despite of it to try to find a solution to these issues. When someone loves his country , treat it with respect.That means, that he doesn’t speak negativ of it and also cares about the environment by keeping it clean. Greece with his unique nature and great history deserves really this esteem.

I’m Greek but I’m living in the US since college. I always find it funny that Greeks have a pessimistic view of Greece while Americans think that the US is the best country in the world. They’re both wrong. In my experience the average Greek has a much better life than an American, all things considered. I think the people that think this way are the ones that haven’t travelled much out of their country and they get brainwashed by the local sentiment. I used to be like that when I was living in Greece. But believe me, the grass always looks greener on the other side. Appreciate what you have and you like most and don’t let negativity poison you.

My relatives in Greece haven't travelled abroad because they can't afford to, they live pay cheque to pay cheque and even that isn't enough. Australians always say the same thing......that the average Greek lives a better life than we do in Australia, but they have never actually asked a Greek or lived in their shoes for a day. They holiday each year in Greece in nice hotels, rent cars, eat out every day and night and romanticise life in Greece because they can afford to go there for 5 weeks every year, spend $20,000 and live large. That's not the life of the average Greek, far from it, in fact.

IMO an average greek family with average income for greek standards lives better overall than an average american family. Yes the average american family has an income much higher than the greek but if you compare lifestyles there is simply no comparison. In the US we do nothing but work. The Greeks work enough to get by. I’m 57 and about half of my friends in Greece have retired already! In the US the question is if retirement is affordable to keep up with the lifestyle we live!
Living in America here, not sure where you live and what kind of people you hang out with, but many of the people I know are despondent with this country and where it's heading. I lived in Greece for four years a long time ago, and it was way better there.
And of course, I LOVE living in Greece, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else... I am a Greek born abroad, I am living here 34 years now, I have chosen to live here and I don't regret any day of my life here, despite the many issues we have as a country.

the fakelaki thing is fading away, at least in the health sector. I have experienced many (young mainly) doctors that deny any attempt of "tipping", and regard it as an insult. Stray dogs are slowly also fading, in fact i haven't seen a stray don in my area for quite some months (i live in Athens). Cats, it's a different story, they're everywhere, but i love them and they don't pose a danger. About rubbish, it's all about education and what people are tought in their houses. I don't have any hope, kids are brought up without any respect to anything, no fear of anyone, the whole society is going downhill in a very ugly way.
I think the younger generation are more principed to some extent, they do care about animals and i also remember getting into a taxi in Athens with a young driver, i was impressed by the hygiene, no-smoke and not pushing extra fees compared to older generations taxi drivers that are bit careless and a bit dishonest about their fees.

What I hate about this otherwise beautiful country is damned stupid graffiti everywhere. Even here in the first seconds of the video. It is on walls of friendly churches, on majestic rocks. Literally everywhere. Yes, there is absolutely stunning street art on the walls of big cities. I admire it. But that crap... It looks like youngsters try to destroy everything that they are able to reach. It was told in another video how Greece provides children with a very good environment to grow, how great it is to raise children in Greece. I definitely agree with that. But how come Greeks cannot teach their children to respect their own homeland? Why are natives being raised here so eager to make the land they grow up on look like a landfill? It blows my mind off. I just cannot get to understand it.

There are no proper families in Greece the last 20 years. Parents got tired trying to survive every single in a non stop crisis environment. They don't have the courage anymore. So they let their kids do whatever they want without checking or caring about them. The new parents don't care to teach their kids respect, manners and other important things. They just care to make money to survive and provide food. Things have changed drastically in the last decade. Families are not like what they used to be.

My mom lives here in the USA all day long the craziness about the news! I tell her “ you live in the gun capital of the world! Why you even talking crazy about Greece?” They get pissed when I tell them (we come often) “ stop complaining about life here come to America and see life through our eyes! Wishing our children ‘ be safe ‘l daily that’s not normal life! Greece is FAR from perfect but I regret not bringing my boys there when they were little! BTW my kids speak fluently and they tell me “ the people are genuinely nice”! I've been living in the UK for the last 34 years and in London in particular in a great area. For all the things I'm grateful in the UK coming back to Greece hopefully will be my next adventure within the next few years as travelling around the world I've realised that there is no better place to live in despite the negatives. I've completed my ground up renovation of my ancestral home in Evia for the last five years and I'm looking forward to a simpler village life. My Italian wife is also learning Greek that gives me hope that our move will be sooner rather than later. We were in your Nafplio this time last year for our anniversary and can relate to your experiences. Take care and all the best.
I appreciate your calling out the Air BnB problem in Greece and its nefarious effect on the local social fabric of cities and towns. We here in Annecy in the French Alps (not a a big town) have to deal with overtourism and a dire housing problem while almost 3000 Air BnB rentals have turned the place into a Disneyesque tourist attraction for consumers who leave their waste beside overflowing garbage containers and all along the shoreline of our beautiful lake. Much like the woman in your excellent video, I too go on cleaning binges during my daily walks, picking up stray bottles and discarded take-away pizza cartons. I simply cannot understand what is wrong with people.

Hello again from the Southern US! I see a lot of the same issues in the United States as well. The United States is a wonderful country, but faces a lot of similar issues as most other countries in Europe. Overconsumption of news media and talk shows, loss of patriotism, litter, housing issues. Sure, the issue is spread out over such a large area, but it’s still a problem. Corruption is certainly the biggest problem in this country as in many first world nations. For the US in particular it’s the companies that cause the biggest problems (and yes they try dodging taxes too).
I’m not sure about strays, but I know bad owners contribute to dog attacks in the US more so than strays. Certain areas have stray cat problems (my university’s area to give an example), but over all, local spay/neuter programs have helped.
Every country has pros and cons. There is no perfect country or government.
I absolutely love your channel! It’s very informative, and the way you present things is very clear and simple. I hope to visit Greece soon and live there some day.

From a Greek living in Canada....
1. We are also constantly bombarded with American (and Canadian) news. It is what it is. You can turn it off.
2. Canadians are becoming more and more cynical about living here each day. We have large numbers of professionals and general people leaving the country daily because it is too expensive to practice or live here, there is a housing shortage, and the "Canadian way of life" faded into the background years ago
3. Not as much of an issue as in Greece but it still happens as it does everywhere in the world
4. The amount of McDonald's and Tim Hortons coffee cups flying around outside is alarming. Again, the simpler and cleaner Canadian way of life is gone and the overall cleanliness of our cities is deteriorating each day. Local governments are managing more with much less and it shows on our streets around the country
5. Good luck owning and AirBnB in Canada with these interest rates... ha! We also have a nation-wide housing crisis. Again, Greece is not special in this scenario
6. Bribery and corruption is all over the planet. Come on now...

In my opinion, too many Greeks have the "xorio mindset" and when they come to either Canada and/or the USA they cling desperately to their roots and usually find out that North American and the "American (or Canadian) Dream" is actually a fabricated commercial from the 1950's and doesn't exist anymore. I've had many friends who have had family come here from Greece only to leave 1-2 years after and go back to Greece due to not being able to find work, living here is too expensive, and the "go to work, go home, sleep, wake up, go to work, go home, sleep" lifestyle isn't what they're used to coming from a more social climate "sthn Ellada..."

I don't know where you are in the country, but here in southwestern Ontario (around Toronto) it is a chaotic mess each and every day and especially with the cost of living day-to-day. Him going to the water for his morning swim is outstanding and I love that he is living in a good way. It's beautiful to watch. I am so proud of him even though I do not know him.
Another thing I didn't mention was, at the moment, it costs about $1,500.00 (CDN) to fly from Toronto to Athens and again, with the cost of everything, going to Greece to see family and/or friends is not on my radar. Travel for most Canadians (inside or outside) is off the radar as well. We cannot afford to travel as much or freely as we once did. Thank goodness for FaceTime and WhatsApp, I guess.
These videos are wonderful and I am glad you are enjoying them as well. They offer me a small "break" from reality "ston Kanada..."

@@ThunderDome74 I am from Montreal. The cost of living here is not as bad as in Toronto or Vancouver but it's getting there. I went to Greece last month for 2 weeks and it cost a fortune. Definitely not something you can do every year. Concerning the flight it cost me $1045(CDN). But I booked just a few weeks before. My cousin on the other hand booked from March and she paid $1600 (CDN).
Everything he mentions in the video I experienced first hand, especially with my friends and relatives there.
They believe that everywhere else is much better than in Greece. They talk about their struggles never once thinking to ask how thing are for you. They just assume that things are great for you because you live abroad.

I enjoy your outlook and positivity of Greece.Yes there's corruption, yes nowhere is perfect, but YES things can change if you remain optimistic and just focus on the positive. The country itself is infinitely plentiful to help fuel you with positivity. People should stop focusing on other people who do bad things and just focus on themselves and on what little they can do to make where they live a slightly better place. No judgement on anyone feeling negatively of course but I just suggest for their own sake, to try the best they can and focus on the good because you will just end up feeling depressed all the time... take care of yourselves! ❤🩹

Having lived in UK, Greece, and Canada, i can safely say the grass is never greener on the other side. We all have a choice of how to live when we get out of bed though. Needless to say i should listen to myself. My uncle in Greece said to me 2 weeks ago, take the word Hellas and take the a and s off and you're left with Hell. It sums up the love hate relationship us with Greek blood in us have with the country. Be smart, people. Always choose hope! It is never too late to re-create society so that it works for everyone. As a foreigner living in Athens, I agree with this video, and love it!

Now I will share what are a few thing I personally hate about living in Greece:
1. Agree on the part about news and negativity. It is a southern European problem. I am from Croatia, I have lived in Portugal and I have family members and great friends in Italy, Serbia, and Bosnia as well. In all these countries including Greece, the issue is the same: people are brainwashed that Northern European countries are inherently better because they have better politicians. Complaining about politicians as if they were not just a consequence of the common traits is a result of that “small individual” mentality, where, for example, the garbage thing is a result of the lack of the efficient law enforcement rather than lack of good manners.
2. Driving culture. I just hate how much people in Athens use their cars to go everywhere, how often the traffic is dense, and how every attempt from local governance to reduce driving lanes in favor of walking ones results in the protests of these, again, “small individuals” who just need to drive their cars everywhere. Not mentioning parking on all kinds of places, driving motorbikes into the sideways, not respecting basic rules of the road.
3. Forest fires. Again, it is always a result of some stupid act going wrong. Some retarded individual just needed to throw his cigarette somewhere. Someone just needed to light up a grill outside. Someone just needed to burn the scraps. Or, someone needed fireworks for some stupid celebrations.
4. The belief that Greece is expensive. No, it is not. Try going for holidays in Croatia. You will find underwhelming food and accommodation for exorbitant prices. In most of the European countries people pay a lot for anything fresh or whole food. In Athens, you fill your friedge with fresh fruit and vegetables for 2 people for a week from laiki for 20 euros. Things such as toothpastes shampoos, or packages food such as pasta are indeed cheaper in bigger countries.
I'm watching from Dublin Ireland. Visit Greece every year! Love it & the people, I agree with you about the rubbish and stray un-neutered cats & dogs as much as I love animals, they really need to be neutered & dogs shown more compassion in Greece. I've spent entire holidays cleaning the beaches I swim in, cigarette butts & plastic bottles everywhere, Ive seen entire 'greek' families come to a beach and leave ALL their rubbish there including beer bottles 😢 I watch & like all your videos and I also like your music. Keep going your channel is great.
I love everything about Greece except one thing...the fires in the summer. That turns me off. I have almost the exact same problems where I Iive including the fires, unfortunately.
I am a Greek that has grown up in Greece until the age of 15 years old. Every country has its problems. I think people get to choose what gives them a better life. Greece is very beautiful ofcource. I might disagree with some things but it will always be in my heart. I had the opportunity to come back and work in Greece when I was 26 and when I was 29. 5 years all together. I cant say I had a good experience. I think its very hard to work for a Greek boss. I am glad though, as free humans have the opportunity to choose where we want to live. And that's great. It actually up to us to make a good life wherever we are......Different lifestyles suits different people. The Fakelaki or Bribery is more common when dealing with the Public Health System or anything to do with Government processes. It is usually needed if you want to "Speed-Up the process". Another name is also known as "Ladoma" which came up since in the old times they used to give containers of Olive-Oil as payment.
Fantastic point about the news. 99% is negative. Pretty much 100% is out of your control. 0% chance of feeling good after watching it.
Being Greek and having lived in England and Sweden for almost a decade I can assure you that those who think everything is bad in Greece have no idea whatsoever how life in northern Europe actually is. Most Greeks that live abroad dteam of coming back to Greece some day. Btw, the stray dogs and rubbish issues are not the same all over Greece. You most probably have worthless local administration, which does happen often but definetely not all over Greece...
The graffiti and disgusting smoking in restaurants next to children is in every single location in Greece.

Smoking indoors has been banned in Greece for 18 years. This is pretty well observed from what we have seen. Smoking is permitted in outdoor seating unless the owner has established the entire property as non smoking. While some non smokers may find outdoor smoking bothersome, it is not against the law.

I am a Greek that lives 6 months in Athens and 6 months in Sweden for the last 6 years . Every time I come back to Athens I am more disappointed with the things I experience .
I agree with you about the news . They love to dramatize and terrorize . It doesn’t affect me though because I realize what they are trying to do . What affects me is how dangerous it is to live in Athens !!!!!!! A stop sign and a red light means nothing !!! A one way street is not a way one street !!!!
It terrifies me to drive amongst irresponsible people . The stray cats that people continuously feed which results into multiplication is also hazardous to our health !! The pigeons that have taken over our balkonies because some people feel they are pet friendly are a huge health bomb .
The trash and cigarette buds everywhere isn’t a nice view either .
And I could go on and on about situations that easily could be solved .
On the other hand Sweden is completely different BUT is very boring !
Daniel, I'm Swedish, living in Bulgaria since 1996. I travel and work all over Balkans, and it is the same problem, identical, in all of the countries, and it will never change.
I find Greece somewhat better and will settle in Kavala.

1. News can be ignored personally. I do it in my country, so I don't think it would a problem for me specifically, but I get it, people lack of critical thinking.
2. Negativity about own country - the same problem is in Poland due to historic reasons. That slowly changes but in overall, Poles don't appreciate Poland as foreigners do.
3. Stray animals - that is a problem that was solved in Poland years ago.
4. Rubbish - a pity, but I saw more rubbish in Italy... which was surprising, because they were everywhere, even in touristic destinations. This is a problem of most southern countries. The places I visited in Greece (Crete) was not so bad, so I guess it depends on a place. Hopefully this improves in time. I don't even know when or how it happened that Poland became so clean. It just did, naturally, so when we go abroad, we are negatively surprised, because we are no longer used to it.
5. I still managed to rent Airbnb in the remote village with natives - it was awesome! So tourists have a choice. Living there permanently - I understand how this could be a problem. Nice places are taken for rent and became too expensive, so you are forced to live more remote.
6. Bribery and corruption - again, we had that many years ago and somehow fixed it. Too bad that many countries don't address it. I remember how government introduced strong laws against corruption and it all changed in a few years. From the usual "gift" to everyone, it was gone - clear prices, fair treatment.
I think you omit obvious cons that people from colder countries experience - not insulated and not heated houses that make the mild winter into something horrible, even colder that we experience. Tied with the winter emptiness and void - makes winter unbearable and the biggest con for me. I would love to live in Greece from April to October, the rest of the time I would prefer to be in Poland, in constant heated place. Or ideally, if I could move my house in Greece ;) - then I could live there the whole year.
Great video. Most issues we also have in Italy and several other "old" countries I have visite. Do these issues make living in these countries undesirable? No. Can things be better? Yes. So I feel that we'll balanced content such as this are valuable.
Mass consumption of news is a problem in the US too, although the news is so bad right now some people are avoiding it.

You know what? We live in Southwest Florida, and almost all of the awesome things that used to make Florida great are disappearing fast. It's overcrowded, and the conservative government is making life here very unpleasant. My wife is Greek and our greatest desire in our life is to get to Greece and stay. We don't care about the few minor problems in Greece. All that matters is that it is HOME. We will sell our house and cars and buy a big sailboat, and then we are coming home to Ελλάδα.

greece is great as any balkan and e euro countries if you can take your US work remote keeping the dollar salary even if only part time 40k a year is king over here, or you have skills that are rare and in high demand

1) Fully agree on the news, so much sensationalism, what I do is read and I curate what I want so I focus and read more in depth on the positive stuff like infrastructure projects etc, but I just check headlines on the more negative stuff I find you still stay informed but don’t get drawn into it the same way as when you watch it on TV. The US is also horrible with this one. But entertaining for people that don’t live there so I tend to watch on youtube. As it’s far removed and it’s more like a drama series and doesn’t affect me.
2) people being negative is a pet peeve of mine everywhere on the world, and I find I see it in people that are less travelled, I just don’t put up with it and stop the conversation I just say I don’t want to hear it sorry.
3) trash, yes but it has improved and you are seeing a lot more people having their sensitivities of cleaning up. You should have seen how much trash was around in the 90’s. People even collect their cigarette butts at the beach. Nevertheless much room for improvement. We all need to do our part and call proper out when we see something or show by example.
Also on the stray dogs., before the Olympics there used to be sworms of dogs in Athens everywhere groups of 20 dogs or more full out gangs, chasing cars etc. you couldn’t walk down certain streets once a dog almost jumped through the window of my car as he was chasing me down the street. They rounded all the dogs up before the Olympics and I don’t so as many anymore. I don’t even remember the last time I saw a dog chase a car. It was like their national sport

And by the way, re. 5:19 - they are already educated about this (over and over and over: at school, from the news, from the internet etc.) Sometimes education is overrated. What is needed is a campaign and it needs, not just the government, but the entire political regime to support it. Everyone is responsible for this situation: locals and visitors, simple citizens and officials. employees and businessmen, children and parents.

Keep going, we need more positive people and positive thinking in Greece. Every country has its good and bad sides.
I have considerable problems with stray dogs when I am riding the bicycle. In general I do not fear dogs at all and can handle aggressive dogs but on the bicycle there is no solution.
When i walked up to palamidi last august i came back down with two full plastic bags of rubbish that i collected because i love my culture and have deep respect for the land after all greece has endured through the ages, it's very tragic to see how careless people are, absolutely respect is becoming more non existant in todays world and the actions are a reflection.
I'm more like a negative guy, and gotta point out that the news in Greece are literally glorifying the country's situation right now. Someone watching and believing the news right now should believe he/she is living in the most blessed country in the world... Just watch the statistics for freedom of speach in public media and it points out.
Also some of the problems you mentioned are mostly related to Athens and Thessaloniki, the main metropolitan areas of Greece where pretty much 70% of Greeks live. In a lot of things you are right that living in a town like Nafplio or similar is nice and calm and close to nature without many bigger problems than other societies. But gotta think that for most professions nowadays there's no job to be found in the country side, therefore we got internal immigration, that gradually made our 2 big cities full of problems. And what affects the 70% of the population (specifially the working ages) is what moves so much negativity I guess.
One thing i personally don't like about greece is drivers. They don't want to follow the rules and they threaten pedestrians every time they cross the zebra crossing or near a traffic light.
Tourists are always told by greeks to be warned and cautious in the roads when drivers should learn to give way to pedestrians.

Something I hate about Greece is the panellinies. My daughter did them this year and she did very well, but the last 2 years she had to study so hard and it's all bulimic learning by heart. In 6 months most of what they studied will be forgotten.
I think elementary schools in Greece are good and I think Greek teachers actually see themselves mostly as educaters, not just as someone who fills kid's brains with knowledge. But the whole thing about panelling es is sick!!!
As a parent i understand the pressure of panellinies, but dont forget if you pass the test you enter 4 years of university study free, rather than having huge student loans like the kids in America
@@lenaannis8787 as a German who studied in Italy I can tell you in both countries there's nothing as exhausting as panellinies, yet in both countries students have access to very good education without needing student loans.
The USA are really not what we compare with here in Europe, rather countries like the Netherlands, Finland and Denmark when it comes to education.

I'm a greek living in the UK for over 30 years and I agree 100% with you. Only I could not survive in Greece and I'm grateful to the UK that gave me the opportiunity to make a living according to my moral code. I hope you have more stamina than me.
Have spent a lot of time in Greece the last 3 years and I find that very few things have changed and not for the better. I was collecting trash from the beaches then, there's even more trash now. Corruption is rife not only in the health sector. And I see the greek kids to grow up thinking that all this is normal and that there is no other way of doing things.

as a greek having been able to visit other countries(via work) even latin america, in my opinion greeks(the majority of them), somehow really have to visit first their neighboring countries such as turkey and bulgaria and then other countries either in europe or in latin america or even usa to properly re-evaluate their own country and see that is not as what the news media portray it to be. I stopped watching TV in general cos I feel tv stations and news media in general are very corrupt and always give you their truth that suits their economical/political agenda. I try to stay positive and if I dont understand sth, I ask multiple greek friends that have actual degrees in that specific field I have questions.

Bless that woman picking up the trash. I was honestly shocked that the road (Πολυζωίδου) up to Arvanitias beach was an utter trash heap. Even at the beach people had thrown garbage on either side of the walkway. (Visited Aug/2024). You find scenes like this throughout Greece on rural roads.
We have trash in my country as well, (not nearly as much), so I simply occasionally take a bag with me on some of my morning walks to pick some up.
You are practically Greek after all these years. Everything you pointed out is exactly like that. I (more or less) watch your videos and I agree with most of what you say.
This is a good place to be, in the end. We don't realize it. When things are bad, they are BAD, irrelevant where you are (and I've traveled to a few countries to understand this). We are not in the worst place for this.
My 1st son (16), wants to move to Toronto, even before actually deciding what he is going to do for a living. Seeing all those super-rich youtubers, he thinks he will find perfection and the American dream, the Canadian way. A couple of people from Canada we met the last couple of years, tried to reason with him. :D Things are good wherever you are WHEN your problems are already solved.

There are no countries with just positive things and no negatives. As a Greek, I do not know whether we have more negatives in Greece than other countries but I do not believe that. You just survive like everywhere.
Totally correct and objective overview of Greek life !
For me there is really only 1 - the smoking. It’s bad enough that a huge % smokes - it’s when I am trying to eat that everyone is smoking at the taverna/cafe/restaurant whatever. FYI - In Aus we have a more formalised φακελάκι program. If you a see specialist most procedures will incur an out of pocket cost. This is no different to a φακελάκι.
That’s a bit of a stretch. In the US too if you go to a specialist you will have to pay a larger co pay and possibly some out of pocket expenses. I don’t really consider that a bribe. By the way smoking indoors in public places has been banned in Greece for a long time. If someone reports a violation of this ordinance it will be investigated and the owner of the establishment will be subject to a large fine.

All Balkan peninsula countries are doing the same, particularly watching the news too much, and all of them are very often talking negatively about their countries, mainly about governments not really about countryside. And yes all of us have a problem with stray dogs and rubbish. As a matter of fact every single thing you're mentioning here is same problem in Serbia (my origin country), Romania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Ahahahahaha.... as a Greek living in the UK this is the main thing I complain. The lack of good news coverage. I'll tell you what the problem is in a country like the UK that does an excellent job with foreign affairs journalism but terrible with internal. Scandals not only go unnoticed they even get normalised. In the UK for years, politicians blamed the EU for anything going wrong. No matter how unrelated to the EU, to get out of trouble. The media never held them in any effective way accountable for that. In Greece, they would have torn them a new one. The flip side is that countries like Greece feel they have far more corruption than they do when compared with abroad, whereas here in the UK they live in a fantasy land by which they think they have far less corruption than other European countries. They are happier and prouder though for it!

The garbage issue in Greece is not due to the lack of ability to collectively put them in a bin but its always seen as a task for someone else to care about. My father noticed it first hand in our village, in Kyveri, there is a Green Trash bin about 10-15 meters away from our house. This women, if you want to call her that, finished her apple and just tosses it on the ground in front of our house. My father, who knew she dropped the remaining apple, told the woman in Greek " Miss you dropped something" and which she replied " Its Ok" as she passed by that Green Trash bin. Its a mentality of those that are ignorant in Greece that truly upset me. Ohhh and don't get me started on the Stray dogs and the Shit that you see on the street. I always find it funny how Greeks who have immigrated abroad, are always coming to videos, posts or whatever about Greece and writing negative things about the country. If you were truly happy about your life in the place you went, then why do you still bother to spend energy about Greece.

I want to move to Crete but I'm very worried about how I'll cope with the abandoned, abused dogs. I think it will be very difficult emotionally. There are laws to protect the dogs but they're not enforced. I think the Greeks have really let themseves down where the stray dogs are concerned, just ask Takis of Takis Shelter. For the rubbish, it really, really depends on the area of Greece or within the city in which you live in. For example, in my suburb in Athens, it's not a big deal, as it's mostly clean, but there are still a few empty plots of land that are concentrating some rubbish.
As for that lady, she isn't the only one. I actually gather rubbish (the recyclables) and throw them in the bins. Many actually do that, as I've seen it.
I think seeing as Greese is not yr country of origin, you speak and explain very fairly about Greese. Every country has negative points but its always good to hear so you can go to that place and see for yr self .
Spend a fortune feeding stray cats when visiting Rhodes..Fallaraki is pretty litter free.My estate in England is full of uneducated litter bugs.
I am negative about my country because it is pushing me away. I can't go out to eat , I can't go for a vacation to an island, I must only work work work long hours to afford my rent and bills. My country is for tourists, not for me. Hope that helped.

Για το φακελάκι στους γιατρούς παράξενο σου φαίνεται και δίκιο έχεις, όμως αν δεν το δώσεις θα δεις τα ραδίκια ανάποδα και αυτό στο λέω με την όλοι σημασία της λέξεως ειδικά σε καρδιολογικές κλινικές στην Αθήνα, εδώ παλιότερα είχαν γίνει συζητήσεις για να το νομιμοποιήσουν το φακελάκι!!!
Λόγω υποχονδρίασης, ιδίως για θέματα καρδιολογικά (φοβόμουν μην πάθω, και ακόμα φοβάμαι μην πάθω, καρδιακή ανακοπή) και έχω γυρίσει ΌΛΑ τα νοσοκομεία στις καρδιολογικές κλινικές τους τελευταίους 7 μήνες.
Δεν έχω ακούσει μεγαλύτερη μαλακία από αυτό. Διότι αν ίσχυε αυτό, πραγματικά δεν θα έκανα καν τα δεκάδες καρδιογραφήματα, υπερήχους και εξετάσεις αίματος αυτό το διάστημα. Διότι θα μου ζητούσαν φακελάκι.
Διότι παλιά, και για αυτά ζητούσαν φακελάκι. Τώρα όμως δεν τα δέχονται καν.

The claim Greeks see the news as the truth couldn't be further from the truth. Most Greeks watch the news but distrust it. I for one don't trust practically anyone in the news, including foreign news, ever since so many so-called journalists ridiculously start claiming Skopjans are "ethnic" Macedonians. That's like claiming they are Athenians or Spartans. To make matters even worse , ever since Skopians turned into ancient Macedonians, masses of liars in the media, human rights groups, and politicians all unethically evade to hide their mistake of recognizing the frauds as "Macedonians".

I think talking negative things about the country is not bad as long as they are aimed to change something. Some negative things that I find in Greece as foreigner quite often a surprise for Greeks with whom I am dealing with. And I had discovered that they just do not know that some things could be done differently…

All the money we make doing Air BNB in Philippines 🇵🇭, we are spending on vacation in Greece 🇬🇷 lol ❤ - currently staying at an Air BNB in beautiful Kalamata - My wife is a really good cook and Air BNB let’s people take a break from eating g out all the time and makes the trips better than just hotels and indigestion! For many home owners that do Air BNB they are making enough money to improve their lives ( and go on vacations too maybe 😊)

My compliments, as a Greek who’s lived his life entirely abroad, we the Greeks of diaspora value the country more than those that remained. It’s unfortunate but often I hear the most nostalgic people left Greece and those who remained do not realize what a wonderful country it is. Thanks for focusing on the positive.

Many choose to leave and never return, as over 500k of the best and brightest have done since the financial crisis. I’m not criticizing the ones who stayed just stating facts. Look around you, people are frustrated in Greece, especially the ones who can see beyond the hypocrisy that successive governments sell as progress. When regular people are still making 500 euros a month while politicians milk the system, why would those who remain be better off. It’s not an indictment of those who remained, just reality. I'm planning to return. If we want Greece to get better we can't all be living in the diaspora. We need too return and help the country out.Not everyone as we still need a diaspora for lobby reasons and etc but a large percenatge of us need to return to help the patrida and what our ancestors fought for in 1821
Well said. Might I add:
1. F*ckin' graffiti everywhere. Mind you, graffiti can be awesome. But taking a spray can and just smearing almost EVERY free surface without purpose or reason? No. Same with posters, stickers etc.
2. Following the previous one: Rampant vandalism. From damaging public property (traffic signs, park benches, trash cans, ANYTHING) to keying someone's car "just because"... it's just wrong. And so shameful.
I'm gonna be 44 in about a month and I've been saying this since my early teens: Greece is a blessed place (not in the religious sense), but with people who do not truly appreciate or love it. Sure, not all of them. But I dare say a majority.

I agree that there is a problem with strays but I don't agree with the killing "shelters" policy they have abroad in many "civilized" countries. Killing the strays in order not to have to see and deal with them on the streets, is not a solution either. And I am only saying this because that's how they clean the streets from the strays abroad. And this is not acceptable here. Of course, there should be good practices for the welfare of animals and people as well, and the municipalities should follow the law and do their job as they are supposed to. State malfunction is the real problem right now.
All countries of the World are facing various problems not only Greece. Greece has his shadow site and his sun site like all other countries. Someone that has lived abroad for a long time or have travelled a lot is certainly aware of this. Greeks ( especially the young Generation) have to learn the pros of their country to appreciate and at the same time not to complain regarding the problems that the country is facing but despite of it to try to find a solution to these issues. When someone loves his country , treat it with respect.That means, that he doesn’t speak negativ of it and also cares about the environment by keeping it clean. Greece with his unique nature and great history deserves really this esteem.
