    How much does our vision impact our opinion on sound?? Can I tell my basses apart just using my ears?! With help from Matt Parker, I'm about to see if I can rate and tell my basses apart whilst being blindfolded...

    Fun video concept! Must be weird having someone else play your basses to you, kinda like sitting in the passenger seat of your own car.

      Super strange. Different playing style really threw me off

    What is it about us bass players that compels us to engage, actively or passively (unintended bass pun) with this kind of exercise? By all reasonable measure, a long video of two (admittedly nice) blokes doing a blind comparison of bass guitars should be the musical equivalent of watching paint dry. Yet, here I am, 44 minutes and 23 seconds later having sat wide-eyed and glued to it all in wonder. This is why my wife rolls her eyes at me when I then say things like, "but did you hear how good that Squier P bass sounded?" Excellent video chaps!...and that Squier really did sound good.

      Haha thanks so much man! I think its down to a lack of attention we get as bass players...

    Unless I watched it wrong? You got the 83 Jazz correct but thought the FGN was the Glarry. So you should of re-listened to the FGN
    Matt is such a good bassist though, definitely need more episodes with him. Gear reviews would be good with the way you both discuss.

    I love how you tried to trick Jonny by playing short note with that fretless🤣

    • @mattparkerbass

      It was the only way I could try and not make it sound like a fretless, they're so distinctive! 🙈

    I wrote this before the end. YOU NEED TO REWATCH IT! You thought the FGN was the Glarry.
    I can’t believe how well you did. I was impressed. The funniest part is when it was the FNG, I wasn’t looking at the screen, and I thought it was the Glarry too. What’s interesting about that is, when i got mine, I thought it was really great, but the longer I’ve had it, i think it’s one of the worst basses I own. I think Will pumped that brand so hard, it caused a placebo…
    Brilliant video!
    Btw, I wanted to say “thank you” for pushing the gain/trim on the podcasts. I can actually hear you and Chris when I listen at work. Cheers

      That shook me. But i still love the FGN when I play it haha. We worked out we were pushing it too much to try and compensate so the platform was reducing the volume! Thanks very much for tuning in! 😁

    Great video Jonny. I'd hate to think how I would have done trying to ID my own basses blindfolded.

    I know I would suck at this.. although really tempted to try it. Great video, but I did think you got the 83 jazz correct. It was also quite mean/brilliant to use fingering, pickup selection and tone to try and trick you.

    Last evening I went to play my 4-5 year old USA Fender P bass . Admittedly it has been 5-6 months since I last played it. Instead favoring either my Spector or Sire.
    I quickly noticed that I was working too hard with my fretting hand. So I put my slotted straight edge on it and sure enough the neck relief needs to be adjusted. I then grabbed my Harley Benton Marquess 4 string. Which had also been hanging unplayed for the same amount of time, same room, same conditions. It was buttery smooth and played very easily. I put the notched straight edge on it and the neck was perfect. Chaulk one up for Harley Benton. It sure surprised me.

    Fun video you did better than thought, i could see you really listening out for tell tale character quirks. Like buzzy frets or notes..ect, on the same style or model instruments 🎸

    Well done Jonny...i think it proves that yes while what type of wood does make a difference to tone..paying £4000 for a fancy bit of rare Siberian Rock Maple or rarest African Sandle wood is not gonna make much of a difference...no-one would know what wood is under the paint...the fretboard wood does make a small difference to a bass's 'tone'...their are noticeable differences in tone due to each bass's design & build quality but after a couple hundred ft of cable into the mixing desk then back to a PA ,nowhere near the sound of your bass or back line, most people would not be able to tell blindfolded what type of bass is being played nevermind the maker...i think you done well,most people would toil to do better..the Guild,Stingray,Jazz & Precision do have different tones but live at a gig or on record it would be interesting to know how know many people could genuinelly tell which is which...very interesting...🎸👍

    The 83 setup sounds like the strings are too close to the neck, the strings are chocking ^^

    • @JonnyDibble
      @JonnyDibble  11 місяців тому +2

      It's set-up for a specific playing style, less convenient for this test, but very convenient for Matt 😊

    • @mattparkerbass
      @mattparkerbass 11 місяців тому +1

      Yeah this one is usually for slap only, so I have the action decked for those treble pops! It means for finger style there's a bit of buzz though 😬

    • @valendis
      @valendis 11 місяців тому +1

      @@mattparkerbass interesting I always thought the setup for slapping was higher action, thanks for the explanation!

    • @mattparkerbass
      @mattparkerbass 11 місяців тому +1

      @@valendis it's the opposite! Lower action is less fatiguing and you get more percussive sounds. Higher action means you're having to hit the strings further and harder for the same effect!
