I want to make an axe this way, but I use fiberglass instead of PVC for all my cores. Where I am it gets super, super cold in the winter and the PVC cores are known to shatter. Nobody at my LARP uses PVC. So because I won't be using PVC, the pipe insulation won't work over the handle. What should I do to make the handle safe for throwing then?
TheHyperActiveDJZ depending on the thickness of your fiberglass u should still be able to use the pipe instillation. just make sure its a snug fit to the core and tape it down. it will stick just like any other foam you will be putting on the weapon. besides most fiberglass rods aren't circular or a good width for a hand and adding the pipe instillation helps give it a better grip and hand feel.
I have a couple of questions, that I would greatly appreciate if you answer. Could I use a pool noodle instead of pipe insulation? ( I know that it has a different diameter, but I was thinking that I could shove it on ) Also, what spray adhesive do you use? {Does it even matter?} Do you think I could use dowels for your arrow tutorial? [with fletchings] Thanks.
***** The pool noodle width would be much thinker and make your handle hard/impossible to grip right (over is not using for a handle then yes). 3m Super 77 adhesive glue found in the video picture (at Walmart), yes is matters. Dowels made out of wood would be more likely to splinted and hurt someone, we recommend fiber glass arrows over all but If you use some sealant to avoid splintering then it should be a cheap and slightly less effective alternative.
I myself would not use a counterweight, because axes where really quite front heavy (and adding a counterweight would just make it to heavy overall in real life). Actually I would rather put a counterweight in the axe head in terms of realism ( if the head isn't heavy enough already)
+Benni Bodin Jagell Correct! All valid and understood point. We countered weighted it to throw better. Just a way to make the foamed weapon glide better is all.
ADDITIONAL NOTES: You can use dead batteries as counterweights! dead batteries are only supposed to be thrown away at proper stations, and just tossing them in the garbage is bad for the environment. So filling the handle of the pipe with dead batteries secured together works wonderfully for reusing stuff lying around in the everyday house. Perhaps one of the best options for counterweights is to use part of an old wooden broom handle. Slide about 8 inches //wink wink// into the core of a PVC pipe (the amount may vary depending on handle length and relative diameters of the pipe and wood) It will not only help balance the weapon for easier wielding, but if it is a long shafted weapon, the PVC will not flex as much, given that it is stiff in the handle //wink wink//
Chillin' Like a Villain you can't use it to throw in amtgard however the build and these weapon in the video have been approved at events. just have to make them sturdy and cloth the whole bladed area.
This also works really well for warhammers (I found out because I made a design and when it was put together it looks like a hammer)
You could easily modify this tutorial to make a frying pan.
I love you for pointing that out lmao
YES saw this on my birthday! Thanks!
love this, that turned iut way cooler than i thiught it woukd even with my crappy camera work!

Allegora Ok thanks!

Brandon Marcial interesting suggestion, we will try this!
Allegora just make sure the wood doesn't go further than half the length of the weapon and that it doesn't go under any striking surfaces.
Idk which larp allows cored throwing weapons, but that throwing axe would be illegal in Amtgard.
Is this amtgard legal?

Allegora thanks, I'm making a battle axe so that should work out fibe
Chillin' Like a Villain anytime. thanks for supporting us and spread the word about us and of videos to thank us back!
what is the width of your foam?
+Bennett Lefebvre atleast 2 inches
Really that seems pretty thick
+Bennett Lefebvre Nope, I actually say it in the video as well. =D
Are you guys in hawaii?
Yes and Tennessee
Would this be dagorhir legal?
these are made to dag regulations. as things might change I always recommend looking at rulebook if changes were made since this video was made.
Allegora
I've memorized the MOA. I just wonder if this build is recommended
+Will Hege we have all these passed at dag events. if they are build well and do not bend on them selfsame they will be fine
Allegora
Thanks. I've been looking for a good axe tutorial :3
+Will Hege no worries. like and share for support
JUST stoopid foam... Its not durable! And Its more Hammer than axe
Lol what! 🤣
