There are still a lot of people who say they dislike the headlights. That’s fine with me. I believe they were ahead of their time and they were a true result of progress. Having a couple examples of the most significant of modern 911s is fine with me😊
996.1 aero arguably the best looking 996 of them all. Was never a fan of the .2 headlights. The .1 flows so nice with the lines of the bumper, especially the aero front end.
Really nicely made video Trevor, agree with you on the 996, it’s been under appreciated for a while and the overhyped IMS and bore scoring issues have not helped. A well sorted car has everything you’d expect from a 911 and every bit of the character.
996.1 Aero is the most beautiful 911 and it's also become one of the most desirable. Also not it's the LATER 996s that suffer with IMS/borescore issues after 99 when they changed the block internally to a single row IMS and different linings on the bores ... Early 97-98 cars only akillis heel are the heads over heating, cracking or doing head gaskets although this is a common problem for any 20-30 year old engine that uses aluminum heads from any brand ... Great video Trevor really like these talk through model and history videos but I was shocked you didn't have any of mine in the video as I'm Dan Dan the 996 fan but you got an aero in there and ofcourse Tim's stunner and Sean's red beast so the model was well represented... You just needed more aero's 😂 hope it does well for you and I like your hint on future resto modded 996s from singer etc .... considering Porsche has already built one I believe that guaranteed next decade then watch 996 values rocket 🚀
Beautiful video. Great cinematography and engaging presentation, one minor point though @3:16 the Tiptronic gearbox did not debut on the 996. The Tiptronic debuted on the 1988 964 in the form of a four speed electro-hydraulically controlled unit that was developed in conjunction with ZF and Bosch. What debuted on the 996 was a redesigned version of the Tiptronic gearbox based on the 993's gearbox however the 996 now had 5 forward gears.
Wow, Trevor you’ve really outdone yourself on this one. I’ve watched this twice over this weekend. Amazing presentation and research into the 996 and its history. I loved the coverage, narration and drone footage. Very professionally done. I would say even better than some I’ve seen teams do on TV. Incidentally, I love and respect the 996, especially the GT3 which can still command close to £90k! The Turbos and especially the 4S coupe are some of the most attractive 911s made. Well done and keep them coming! G8…
First of all WOW! What a really well executed video Trevor. The production quality is amazing. Second, the 996 are really growing on me actually. In particular the earlier model with the aero kit. If I had the space and the means I would love one in my garage alongside a 991 GTS, and a boxster. Just need the garage and the 991 GTS to start with then 😂
Love my 996.2 especially as it no longer has the headlights from a beetle or mini 🤣with the added bonus of being suitable for daily driving, also last of the small and truly analogue 911’s 🍳🍳🦆
Great production on this Trevor. For me personally I had the choice when looking at getting my first Porsche. I had to go 997. It’s the round headlights . Classic. Not trying to offend 996 owners.
Cinematography is amazing and gets better with each video. As much as I like and enjoy these features, I also look forward to the next interview with an owner and his/her/their story. Keep up the good work!!!👌🏾
I think the 996 is getting the Star Wars prequels treatment - the voices of the fans(younger generation at the time of release) are now starting to drown out the critics’
Not a fan of the headlights...but it's not JUST the headlights that don't cut it. It's the oval obsessed interior that looks similar to a US Ford Taurus. That and the fact that the headlights are the same as a Boxster. But whatever, both the 996 and the 986 did save the company. Without them we wouldn't have the better looking cars that we do now. Great video. Thanks.
A beautifully shot video and great presentation, thank you for sharing. Have owned my .1 for 6 years and had a great journey putting my own twist on it with subtle mods. Every time I open the garage door it still feels special. A perfect size and performance package for the rural A / B roads. Get a well sorted one and they are so underrated. The headlight design - well I am controversial because for me the gen 1 is the most iconic front end look of any 911 & I couldn't give a s**t what anyone else thinks. As Trevor said, go spend a day in a good one on some good roads.
I still don’t get the ‘popular’ unpopular take that the 996.2 is handsome. The headlight’s weird sharp notch still looks oddball. The 996.1 however… That one HAS grown on me. 996.1 Carrera with aero pack? Yes please.
What a terrific well thought out video. I could be a litttle biased as my 996 gen1 featured many times in the video but I think they are great cars. I feel as you suggested they are now being recognised world wide as great cars.
epic video mate! Big love for the very appricating 996. My dad had a brand new C4S back in 2002 and i myself have just bought one manual C4S. The lines and hips are hard to beat. Absolutley stunning cars and there is only one way the manuals will be going in my opinion.
I have an 01 C2, with fixed wing aero. I had the amber lenses removed when the wiring and projectors were replaced with upgraded litronic versions. I also have tippie, but had a custom wheel made with paddles.
Had my 996 GT2 for 13 Years now and I cannot imagine another design of headlights on the car. The deep front chin just works. When you look at the GT1 do you even think about the headlights, Nope LOL
I do find the 996 in all iterations to be striking to me when I see them. As well as most 911s of all eras. The only ones I’m struggling to admire are the drivers in the 992s. In my 997.2 I never get a nod, thumbs up, flash of lights, salut or any kind of recognition from the 992 drivers. They all seam a bit aloof with loads of money or what ever the reason is. Maybe they are not 911 fans but just want the best sports car on sale. For many reasons this marks the 992 down a bit for me. I actually find the 997 and down the more striking cars as they are all smaller and more classic looking. I have been shotgun in a 992 c2S and loved it. So much so that I went out and bought the one I could afford. The 997.2 C2S PDK.
9x6 generation has earned it's place as a very significant part of Porsche's storied history. I quite like the headlights. These days to me, it screams retro 90's and is notable for how different it looks to any other generation. This is to be applauded. The biggest problem with the 996 is the Porsche snobs - they don't like how the 996 looks the same as the 986 from the front. This similarity is precisely why Porsche is still around today. These same snobs forget that the 986 Boxster came before the 996 911, so it was actually the 911 copying the Boxster. The Boxster has now changed its look and today's 911's are actually evolutions of the original Boxster design. Poor man's Porsche indeed. The Porsche snobs are best ignored. Let them wallow in their snobbish ignorance. Good review.
How about this,,, there is nothing wrong or ugly about the 996.1 head lights in fact it’s a beautiful coordinated part of the whole 996 design, the issue is not the lights or design the crime is the are shared with the boxster
Any particular reason you are calling them fried egg headlights but showing the updated headlights which are no longer the fried egg (no yellow bottom)? It makes it sound like you don't understand the topic
almost 2 decades later, people are still moaning about the headlights. Oy. I will say that it was disappointing to not have my values stay elevated because the 'cognescenti' didn't favor the lights, but after 20 years of owning mine, I have quite come to appreciate them....and the entire car in general (minus the interior). As the newer iterations become larger, more complex and arguably better, and certainly WAY more expensive, I do appreciate the relative simplicity and purity of these old cars without all the nanny stuff. Those who know, know.
The 996 headlights are a pure, flowing, coherent, and well resolved design. They fell out of favour through snobbishness towards the boxster. The 996.2 headlights are a kneejerk reaction to this. They are compromised and, quite frankly, ugly in comparison. The mix of flowing curves and sharp jagged angles is a mess. Time will render the mk1 headlights as the better fit for the design of the car. As it was meant to have been delivered,
Soon as the resto mod guys get on it then you will see these sky rocket in price. And like so many people have said, once you're behind the wheel you don't see the headlights
Nice film but you never actually showed a car with "fried egg headlights" that's a Gen1 996 with ambers (the amber being the yolk) and the big red arrow is not pointing to the IMS bearing , it's at the other end.
Beauty is subjective, but u still can’t say “Is the 996 one of the most beautiful 911’s?”….thats just crazy talk. It’s good value for the experience, and better looking than most cars, but not most 911’s.
Imho I think the 996 should've had the main beams and the foglights in the same position but no fried-egg glass on top. Think a design sketch flickering by showed this. More like the rally style... Can't help bein' a round-headlight purist.
The 996 is the Enterprise D of 911's. The only completely and coherently swoopy, retro futuristic 911 ever built. Don't care if anybody else thinks so or not. I love mine.
Your problem is that you talk about the original 996.1 but you promote the 996.2 - a totally different car. The 996.2 is NOT a product of Pinkey, its a product of the sales and marketing department at Porsche... Boosting sales of "Buy a Turbo (look) for the price of a Carrera". The 996.2 is a misfit. The 996.1 is a gem. The 3.4 is a far superior engine over the slow 3.6.
What a terrific well thought out video. I could be a litttle biased as my 996 gen1 featured many times in the video but I think they are great cars. I feel as you suggested they are now being recognised world wide as great cars.
There are still a lot of people who say they dislike the headlights. That’s fine with me. I believe they were ahead of their time and they were a true result of progress. Having a couple examples of the most significant of modern 911s is fine with me😊
They're uncommon but 996 sold lots.
996.1 aero arguably the best looking 996 of them all. Was never a fan of the .2 headlights. The .1 flows so nice with the lines of the bumper, especially the aero front end.
996.1 beautiful
996.2 is beautiful, turbo and 4S are gorgeous.
All those years watching Top Gear is paying off 😍🔥
Haha you noticed
Unpopular opinion but I think the 996.2 looks better than a 993.
I can tell you have really bad taste
Very unpopular… Specsavers are taking appointments now 😉.
Agree; 993 highly overrated
993 is a baby 997. They are the best.
Really nicely made video Trevor, agree with you on the 996, it’s been under appreciated for a while and the overhyped IMS and bore scoring issues have not helped. A well sorted car has everything you’d expect from a 911 and every bit of the character.

clearly one of the best looking ones.

The 996 gen 1 has aged much better than the gen 2 - I'd love a 3.4. The lights, that free revving engine, looks small, more pure
First of all WOW! What a really well executed video Trevor. The production quality is amazing.

Thanks for appreciating this generation. My 996.2 manual looks beautiful from any angle. Its joyful drivability adds to its beauty.
996 turbo; stunning.
once you drive a 996.2 GT3, you don't give a shit what the headlights look like.
Great production on this Trevor. For me personally I had the choice when looking at getting my first Porsche. I had to go 997. It’s the round headlights . Classic.
Not trying to offend 996 owners.
Yeah I hear you bro. I think once you get behind the steering wheel you forget about the front end
Very enjoyable video well put together. Love the 996
Cinematography is amazing and gets better with each video. As much as I like and enjoy these features, I also look forward to the next interview with an owner and his/her/their story. Keep up the good work!!!👌🏾
Im working on a few owners at the moment. It’s getting hard to find people which is why I thought I’d try something different.
@@RollingSlowMedia makes perfect sense! New format is still very much on point though.
Best Video yet Trevor, and thanks for the great footage of the car as usual :-)
Thank you bro!
Great video and great to meet you at The Fairmile. You caught me leaving in the blue 996TT 👍🏼
Great work as always Trevor!!!
I think the 996 is getting the Star Wars prequels treatment - the voices of the fans(younger generation at the time of release) are now starting to drown out the critics’
I've had a 996 C4S and a 996 Turbo, both fantastic cars and fantastic 911's.
Nice video, fyi 964 was the first 911 offered with tiptronic gearbox.
Well done, Trevor. Good video.

The editing of your videos has come on leaps and bounds 🎉 keep up the great work
Cheers bro.
Hope you’re well. 👊
996 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👌👌👌
I agree re the next restomod… we’re running out of air cooled 911’s!
I have an 01 C2, with fixed wing aero. I had the amber lenses removed when the wiring and projectors were replaced with upgraded litronic versions. I also have tippie, but had a custom wheel made with paddles.

Great Review TJ !!!
They do divide opinion. Personally I like the 996.1 lights if they’re clear. Looks like the 911 gt1 Le Mans car.
How about this,,, there is nothing wrong or ugly about the 996.1 head lights in fact it’s a beautiful coordinated part of the whole 996 design, the issue is not the lights or design the crime is the are shared with the boxster
I prefer late 996.1 lights, no amber indicator lens. Lighter, mine is 2000 C4 so no drive by wire.
I love the 986 / 996. the headlights remind me of the 911 GT1, what's not to like.
It’s aging very, very well.
Awesome job
I love the 996 headlights.

Sorry but gen 1 will never look great. I really cannot change my minde. The gen 2 though, they are really good looking!
Love my 996.2 Carrera.
Sell yours and get one!! Put both feet in 😊 I love mine.
Haha I’d love to have both

I like all 911s.
Nice film but you never actually showed a car with "fried egg headlights" that's a Gen1 996 with ambers (the amber being the yolk) and the big red arrow is not pointing to the IMS bearing , it's at the other end.
Porsche never made that mistake afterwards. That’s enough in itself.
You could get the 993 with tiptronic…..
Beauty is subjective, but u still can’t say “Is the 996 one of the most beautiful 911’s?”….thats just crazy talk.

996.1 have a much better design today than 996.2
The 996 is the Enterprise D of 911's. The only completely and coherently swoopy, retro futuristic 911 ever built. Don't care if anybody else thinks so or not. I love mine.
Different is good. Why go for the norm
The first tipronic? What??? Please check your facts before making a video
🤞😷🏁
best car ever made. fried egg all the way.
The exterior isn't the bad part...it's that awful interior that I can't get past. Horrible, lol.
Keep the 996 CHEAP!!! Yeah those headlights are not worth it 😅
Your problem is that you talk about the original 996.1 but you promote the 996.2 - a totally different car. For a supposed fan of the marque you could at least pronounce the name properly
What a terrific well thought out video. I could be a litttle biased as my 996 gen1 featured many times in the video but I think they are great cars. I feel as you suggested they are now being recognised world wide as great cars.
