  • The Mandalorian Season 3 brings to us the return of The Mandalorian and Grogu as the embark on an adventure to retake Mandalore from the evil Empire and Moff Gideon only on Disney Plus. This season of Star Wars: The Mandalorian heavily features the likes of The Armorer but more prominently Bo Katan Kryze. With Star Wars: The Mandalorian Season 3 focusing mostly on Din Djarin, Grogu, and Bo Katan, how did the season turn out. In this video essay, I discuss the newest Star Wars season The Mandalorian Season 3 and Why It's NOT Great.

The Mandalorian Season 3 brings to us the return of our favorite Mandalorian and Yoda esque duo in Star Wars. After the somewhat negative reception of the book of boba fett, many fans were either skeptical of this new season of the mandalorian or excited for Star Wars to get back to some high level storytelling. With the promise of retaking Mandalore, there was a lot to be excited about. With that being said, how did the Mandalorian Season 3 turn out? Was it as good as the previous two seasons? Was the dark cloud of the book of boba fett too much to overcome? Did the season do a good job at progressing the Mandoverse? Hello everybody and welcome to another video, my name is the gold man and today we are going to talk about the mandalorian season 3.
Before we discuss The Mandalorian Season 3, we need to discuss the giant dark cloud that hangs over this season. And that is the Book of Boba Fett. If you watched my Book of Boba Fett 1 year later video I made a few months back, you would know I have a strong hatred for the series. There are a lot of Star Wars shows and movies I don’t like. The Bad Batch is one for example. I may dislike it, but at least I can say it’s its own series that is completely harmless. Or a movie like Solo, a fine movie that doesn’t do any harm to anyone. I cannot say the same thing about the book of boba fett. Sure most of the series is inconsequential. Like what happened with the war on Tatooine as of right now doesn’t affect anything else. But the decisions they made with Mando and his story have great consequences. Firstly, as we all know it greatly diminishes the ending of Mando season 2. Mando and Grogu’s emotional goodbye was now undone only a year later. Now at the time I came to terms with the fact that Mando season 2 was kinda diminished, but I had optimism that this decision wouldn’t ruin Mando season 3. I thought that they would surely explain that Mando and Grogu were reunited in a different show. And for viewers that didn’t watch Book of Boba, it would be weird for a second but that’ll be it. The story would be able to progress. But boyyyyy was I wrong. The first episode of the season makes no attempt to explain what happened. All we get is Mando saying he completed his mission and then Grogu was returned to him. At the end of the day I get that this is all semantics. If we took the exact episodes of the book of boba fett and put them under “The Mandalorian” title, then this wouldn’t be a problem. It’s kinda the same thing about the complaints about there being Mando episodes in Boba Fett. People only complained because the title of the series was “The Book of Boba Fett” and 2 episodes barely featured Boba Fett. So I get those who disagree with me telling me if I ignore show titles this isn’t a problem. Sure it isn’t a problem to me, but again, what about the people who hadn’t watched Boba Fett. Other than the story, what made the mandalorian appealing to so many people was that it was its own story. I know people that watched the first season of the mandalorian when it came out without seeing any of the movies and they understood it perfectly. The Mandalorian was a show that came with no extra baggage. The Mandalorian Season 2 received some criticism for having pre-existing characters show up like Boba Fett, Bo Katan, ahsoka, and Luke. But I’ve always disagreed with this criticism. Yeah I didn’t like seeing Boba Fett, but with the other 3 you didn’t need to know who they were to understand what was going on.

Still completely baffling to me that the Darksaber, arguably this season's main focus, was handed over to Bo due to a TECHNICALITY, which was only addressed several episodes later, when it became convenient for the plot.

Should have kept BOBF Boba centered and made S3 with the main plot around Mando's quest for atonement and him missing Grogu, while a subplot focusing on Grogu's training with Luke, trauma surrounding Order 66 and him choosing to return. Make the reunion as a season final pay-off. And then, made S4 about recapturing Mandalore, with its politics as a subplot, instead of an episode's main plot.

Andor had great acting, writing, and pacing what, tbh is something I expect from every show. Mando season 3 had some great visual FX but at the same time the Imperial base in the last 2 episodes for me felt super plastic and fake. Also Andor is more realistic then any star wars content we ever seen what definitely shouldnt be the standard for Star Wars. I also found it emotionally compelling to see Bo Katan meet with Dins tribe and begin to clear her own name as a former ruler. She wasn't as bad as the rumors made her out to be.
I do think it was a little to much Bo Katan in the show, and it would be nice to have more Din.Alot of people seem to be mad it put her in position of leadership of mandelor rather than Din. But she did save his life twice, so I think it was fair for him to give her the sabot. Also retaking mandelor was originally her plan in season 2, not Dins, so they would have to work that out somehow.

My biggest gripe is that for Bo Katan basically being the main character, she doesn't progress from where she was last seen in Mando S2, coming to terms with her not being the one with the right to reunite Mandalore, but instead goes from depressed due to her failures to REGRESSING back to her her characterization in Rebels and Clone Wars where she feels entitled by her blood right to leadership of her people and regains that right due to technicality.
She could have come to terms with the fact that she's really not suited to seizing the Mandalore system, which she's basically just bungled since the middle of the Clone Wars or like 20 years in canon, and leveraged that in an advisory role to Din who really felt like her earned that right even if he didn't necessarily want it.
Instead they opted to ignore her experience and threw the legendary weapon away unceremoniously.

When he duels vizla it is more an answer to a challenge than any desire to keep the blade. It also hammers home how bs the whole concept is (further hammered home by the actual destruction of the saber), but also how Jarin is aware of and accepting of the others' customs. I also agree about Grogu being reunited so soon during Book of Boba. We could have flipped back and forth between jedi training and retaking Mandalor easily during Mando 3.
If the producers wanted to show Achmed as a jedi rescuing Grogu during Order 66, that could have easily been shown in a flashback when Luke was trying to discover any fears that block his force weilding. It didn't HAVE to be when sitting with the Armorer.
Grogu could go back to Din eventually, but let him grow a little too. Remember, Luke was not a traditional jedi. He didn't grow up with the code and rules. He probably wouldn't have forced his students to be jedi knights in the strictest form like the Old Republic day Jedi Order.

The only way the whole Gideon cloning trash would be justified is if it was all a distraction from Hux's dad's "Project Necromancer" (smt related to reviving Palpatine or making Snoke), making it seem that all the midichlorians went to making Sith-Gideon troopers to the New Republic

The final two episodes had way too many moments that made absolutely no logic.
    - Gideon doesn`t kill Din Djarin, but escort him with two (!!) troopers.
    - Gideon somehow has a tracking device on both Din Djarin and Grogu. He sees exactly where they are and he couldn`t give a fuck less that they are getting close to his clones, yet appears very angry and shocked, after something that he could have stopped, happens.
    - ...and this is a minor one, I guess, but Moff Gideon destroys Bo Katan`s dark saber, by clinching his fist, yet Bo Katan`s hand, which he was crushing as well, at the same time, is completely ok.

In general, I love Star Wars. There are always moments that could be more, in TV or Movies (I never saw the animated shows) but overall, it is a great escape from the craziness of life. The Mandalorian is the 'family' show. Andor is the 'mature' show. Boba is... variety? Haha.
Truthfully, I like them all equally. I am looking forward to Ahsoka, since I never saw Clone Wars and would like to learn more about her. I especially am eager to watch more of Andor. I hope Boba and Obi-Wan get a season 2, as I really enjoyed those shows as well.
With the announcement of Rey having a film in the future, I am just very grateful for all the fun Star Wars content. I am just a TV/Movie goer, but there are books, comics, cartoons, video games etc. Star Wars is one of the best franchises as there really is something for everyone, of any person, out there to enjoy, get into, and relate. Star Wars is just really cool, man!

One point on the darksaber, we have Ezra returning to the galaxy now and the possibility of Huyang’s return, who likely witnessed and guided the creation of the darksaber, there’s the potential for its repair - perhaps if Huyang and Sabine return, the mandalorian Jedi with an ancestral claim on the blade as a member of house visla (clan wren), as she hasn’t made a lightsaber herself, perhaps they’re hiring at the reclaiming of the darksaber from Bo

IMO third season is one big mess. I thought after parting with Grogu and being banished from his clan he would have to overcome his reluctance to lead and use previous character development to take responsibility as head of state for Mandalore, that taking back the planet would be hard and it will require building alliances and resolving conflicts (like with Bo-Katan, who wants the sabre). Instead they undone all the progress to sell more merch, and had no idea what to do with titular characters of the show. No wonder Pedro Pascal didn't even bother to come on set most of the time.

This would really explain why BoBF and mando S3 really left us feeling disappointed

I don't know if that's true either, but it would make a lot of sense if it was. There was consistency with the first two seasons of The Mandalorian--it was following a plan--and then things began to fall apart. I can say with confidence that it certainly wasn't planned for Grogu to reunite with Mando. That decision had Disney higher ups written all over it, and Kathleen Kennedy makes the most sense.

9:36 Also to note: a rule that was never mentioned in any of the previous appearances. Maul claimed it as a trophy because it was a uniting symbol, not because it was an actual rule. In rebels the Darksaber was given to Bo Katan after it was stolen by Sabine from Maul. No rule then. It was only a rule for that specific scene.

Why would there have to be some big goodbye seen at the end? In this story alone they visit everyone several times. The second season ended with Mando thinking he wouldn’t see Grogu again while here he just decides to live in a planet away from the Mandalorians. The only goodbye scene needed was for Paz and his kid. He ignores orders for his kid and that should’ve been the case in the end with him doing it mainly for his kid or asking for them to look after his kid.

  • @SirPanikalot778

By FAR my biggest problem with this season was that I did not like Boka Tan. She's stubborn, egotistical and annoying when she's on screen. And the worst part? She never had character growth. Instead of finally accepting that the darksaber doesn't belong to her or something along those lines, perhaps a character arc or something, she just gets her ego fulfilled and is just as boring as she was prior.
I would have rather seen the darksaber lost, broken, stolen, or destroyed prior to her finally obtaining it. It would bring more clarity and relatability to her character, rather than the "oh she beat the thing that jumped me while I was off-guard".
Just imagine her chasing the darksaber after it had fallen off a cliff, or desperately scrambling to repair it - some kind of struggle would have been far more compelling and entertaining.

I feel that our expectations are now spoiling the experience. I loved the season, I’m not sure if it’s what people think should happen that make them think that the season was poorly done, but I would argue it’s on par with the previous ones. Whilst I don’t want to go into too much detail, I would say that previous season had a novelty factor but if we were truly to analyse them there was a lot of silliness and supposedly weird episodes, and weird character pivots. The same goes for Clone Wars and Rebels. Having said that, I still love all of these shows and accept them as the overall story that is being told. The only Star Wars product I will never accept are the sequels. There’s not much redemption there which is why I hope the characters and those involved in set design, VFC etc will get another spin in a reset/alternate time but time will tell. I really did try to give them a chance, but to me they’re simply unwatchable. At least the shows have more or less definitive ending so one can just finish at the point they wish to finish and pretend like the rest never happened.
One point on Grogu, I disagree that there was no character development. For one you have to look at him as 3 year old child that operates on instinct and perception. He is becoming more trusting, he’s becoming more assertive in his actions as well. On that note, my question here is, what would be a character development for a 3 year old? I think them treading carefully makes a lot more sense then all of a sudden seeing Grogu having moral and existential crisis.

Overall I agree with you about the amount of extraneous stuff packed into a show originally known for having no fat on the bone. Season 1 episodes each left me wanting 5-10 more minutes of content but not able to deny that the showed and told the exact amount of story intended each time. Hopefully s4 along with Ashoka will be good. Thanks for the content 👍

Din didn't go to Bo-Katan for no reason. She knew where the Living Waters on Mandalore were, he went there to ask her.
This began her character arc, which was then continued when she went to rescue Mando, sees the Mythosaur, becomes a Child of the Watch, shows them she is still a capable leader, and shows the Armorer it's time to reunite the separate Mandalorian clans.
Would you rather The Armorer have stated "We must unite our clans and retake Mandalore" in the first couple episodes? She still believed the planet was cursed & thought of Bo-Katan as nothing more than a cautionary tale.
This is what the season was about: coming together despite their differences and retaking Mandalore, showing that it's not about whether you take your helmet off or wield the Darksaber, it's about whether or not you stick together as a family, despite your differences.

Honestly, I hope that the mandalorien start to do more standalone seasons. Each seasons with its own villain and new characters who might make an appearance later on (Either in Mandalorian or in other series). Not unlike older series such as Buffy. Having the Mandalorien being called in to defeat that villain and expand upon the lore. For example, I would have love to see the Mandalorians unite to create a Great Hunt. I assumed that this seasons would do that as they were called back to mandalore and there was mentions of beasts. Maybe we can get that in future seasons.
I would also like if there was a season (if not in Mandalorian then in future series) where the characters meet Thrawn and Ezra to fight off whatever threat is at the edge of the universe which is hinted at in several media. (The one Thrawn joins the Imperial to stop) Imagine having a mandalore, former imperial Thrawn, a jedi like Ashoka and whatever mess Ezra is (Seriously, can he be called a jedi? He was taught by Kaidan and Yoda, but also by Maul and a sith holocron along with the Bendu so what does that make him) fight a common enemy that even the sith Emperor feared. It would be something to work up towards.

However, I think my biggest problem this season is how it didn't take any risks. The mythosaur? Still asleep. Mandalore? Retaken in 2 episode. Any conflicts between the clans reuniting? Couple scenes of chess and its resolved. Honestly, I can see myself hanging up my hat on this finale if season 4 is canceled or is super bad. I'm disappointed but at the same time satisfied. I mean take the very first scene from season 1 episode 1 as a perfect example. It was badass cold and to the point, "I can bring you in cold, or i can bring you in warm". Show me 1 scene in all of season 3 that was anything close to that... The first episode of season 3 had fkn Sesame Street looking space pirates with cheesy Pirates of the Caribbean accents... It felt like i was watching a totally different show, and its not like it was TERRIBLE but after waiting years for the next season and getting what felt like a completely different show was extremely irritating....

I’ve watched your reviews of Mando S1-3 and agree with some points. But not with others like your remarks on Grogu, e. g. having no personality in S1. Even then he has shown to be cheeky, stubborn, protective, a lover of high speeds, and keen to help.
In S3 he grows and impacts others. Overcoming moments of dread, striving for more self-sufficiency, developing both Mandalorian and Jedi fighting methods, bringing out a gentler side of Din, connecting with Bo-Katan, gaining an advocate in the Armorer, and standing up for what he believes in by breaking up the Paz/Axe fight. Plus, the fight against the Praetorian Guards showcased Din & Grogu’s symbiotic progression.
You turn a blind eye to what Grogu brings to the table. It’s the father/son duo that gives the show its heart and without Grogu’s presence, S3 would’ve had even less emotional story beats.

Should they have shown more meaningful/heartfelt Din & Grogu moments in S3? Shouldn’t they have back-paddled on Din’s developments and given him stakes and sacrifices? Yes.

Nothing is ever flawless, and agreed, S3’s strengths couldn’t overcome all its flaws. Hence, plot holes became more glaring. Still, there was much to like.

I've always been of the opinion that the show was never that great to begin with, but this season took it to a whole new level.

I don't think people talk about this aspect when it comes to epsiode 6 but it's still puzzling why they decided to reverse Din's character development. They decided to make Din hate droids again and ignore his character development from season 1. Yes most of the droids were separatists but the bar scene makes it clear that Din hates all droids. It baffles me why in a filler episode the writers would actively reverse a main character's progression.

I haven't finished the video yet so if it immediately gets overshadowed in five-minutes that's my bad..but I think I have an explanation or at least a loose one. There were some rumors and statements going around (take this with a grain of salt) that John Favreau had the story being messed with for the last 2 seasons, and during this season those people were essentially kicked off or he wouldn't produce it. So my theory is that Favreau was making what he wanted in the first place which was the story of the mandalorians taking their home. He never wanted grogu to leave or maybe even for din to become an apostate or allot of season twos plot points at all..which reminds me allot of The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker which had a very similar problem.

i think a larger problem i have is that we basically know nothing about some of these characters or haven’t learnt anything this since like how moff Gideon is basically just space gus. i couldn’t really be sad about paz vislas death because we know literally nothing about him and they didn’t do anything with the visla thing you might as well given him a random name instead of wasting a cool idea
