We roll most of cereal crops in the spring. It helps to grow a stronger crop because u knockt once the plant over and it develops a stronger plant. Usualy u gad a bit a bigger yield but its not much stronger plant.

We used to have to fog the bush, then you’d sometimes still need a mosquito tent.. bugs can be TERRIBLE in Northern Saskatchewan.

Mike, I think you were smart to prep the land first, before seeding. Being your first time on that land, not knowing what it was like, it wouldn’t have been good if you had snagged an opener on a deadhead you couldn’t see, because it was covered with grass. I also get a lot of satisfaction seeing the row by row progress. I’m very visually stimulated. I love seeing flatbed loads of skid steers…all in a line on a trailer; or other repetitive items, etc. I also love seeing the dirt turning over from a plow, or smoothing from a harrow, etc. patterns…I love them!

Hi Mike, I have heard from a farmer that when you hit a cereal crop in it's early growth stage and slightly damage the main stem, the crop get more "sidearms" next to the main plant. So if you can provide enough water + fertilizer for the whole plant, you should get a bigger yield.

    • @Northern_Farmer

In Europe farmers using farrows for that. The Best effects are in winter wheat or rye. Harrow is also pulling out a lot of weeds, wheat is growing new stems and usually plant is healtier than normal. There is a theory that this can strees plant a bit so is better prepared for some events down the season. And this is very old tactic from times when there wast any chemicals for weeds.
