Strange Magic is from 1975! The story I heard was originally, Jeff Lynne wanted to pick up where The Beatles left off. If you keep that in mind, you can't help to hear it in these early ELO songs. Everything starts to sound like The Beatles "I Am A Walrus". As far as LIVE goes, ELO's "Wembley Or Bust" live is only a few years old & it's a breathtaking performance! Do check out clips from that show.
You haven't even scratched the surface with ELO yet guys. They have SO MANY to choose from. The word 'genius' is thrown around far too much, but in Jeff Lynne's case, its spot on. John Lennon famously said that ELO were The Beatles natural successors. He was correct.
Please do some live Jeff/ELO from the 2017 Wembley concerts! The 69 year old Jeff still sounds amazing, and the band is super tight! Strange Magic originally released in '75, on "Face the Music"! 💕
Outrageously talented bands like ELO, Rush, Styx , Queen, were all categorized as Progressive rock. There was never a More creative , and influential era than the 70's for influencing music at its best. And no one did it better than the previously mentioned
A few other gorgeous songs would include, Can't Get it Out of My Head, Shangri-la, Telephone Line, and Sweet Talkin' Woman. (Among a few dozen more lol)
Hello Dad & Son, thanks for reacting to my (& Tara's) suggestion. I am the one who wrote that, "Strange Magic", was ELO's second most beautiful song, and that is because I consider their ballad, "One Summer Dream", to be even more Heavenly. So yes, I would definitely recommend you react to it--but not next. I think you should mix it up a bit and do a more peppy ELO track, and then come back later to react to a beautiful ballad like, "One Summer Dream". For a great ELO song with more pep, I suggest you do the studio version of, "Evil Woman". It is the song that hooked me on ELO in 1975! By the way, "Strange Magic", also came out in 1975--the album you were looking at is a "Greatest Hits" album that came out decades later in the 2000s. As for a live song for you to react to, I suggest their 1976 hit song, "Livin' Thing", performed in 2017 at Wembley Stadium in London. For your convenience, I'm going to put the links to both the studio version of, "Evil Woman", and the live version of, "Livin' Thing", at the bottom of this comment. Thanks for reacting to ELO, and yes, they are hard to categorize genre-wise, because NO other band sounded like them. But, they do fit best in the "Rock" genre, although it would be fair to say they straddle two genres, by labeling them as "Rock/Pop". You see, ELO had a long career, and their sound changed with the times. They started in '72 as Prog Rock, then by the mid-70s they were Rock, then the late'70s they became Rock/Pop, and in the very last year of that decade they even went "Disco" for a couple songs. And by 1986 they were dissolved by founder, Jeff Lynne, who turned his attention to producing the likes of George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson, and The Beatles Anthology. Not to mention co-founding with George Harrison a supergroup called, The Traveling Wilburys (whom you should definitely react to at some point: two songs, using the official music videos of, "Handle With Care", and, "End of the Line", in that order). Jeff reformed ELO (now called, Jeff Lynne's ELO) in this century, and up until Covid he was touring with great success to packed stadiums (like the 90,000 they played in front of at Wembley in 2017, as hopefully you will see during your livestream!). But back to their original run, from '72 to '86, you'll be impressed to know that ELO had more Top 40 Hits in the U.S. & U.K. (47) than ANY other band in the world during that time! They are my favorite band, and you have a lot of great ELO music ahead of you. :) "Evil Woman", studio version: ua-cam.com/video/UVd4XhtpRBc/v-deo.html (Use THIS link, as others cut out part of the song. It's best to avoid "greatest hits" albums.) @@unrulyjulie4382 Thanks, unrulyjulie! It's great to see this Father-Son duo, representing two different generations, explore the great Electric Light Orchestra together! Make sure you go to their Community page and recommend the link I posted above for "Livin' Thing" live at Wembley 2017, for their upcoming livestream where they'll be reacting to a few live performances! (I don't think they put the suggestion thread up yet, but it should be any time now, so check back.)
Yes Cosmo. One Summer Dream gets the gold for me. And, Cant Get It Out Of My Head and Strange Magic for silver and bronze or bronze and silver maybe :)
It was said below, and I agree, any song from the Jeff Lynne's ELO Live at Wembley is a must. Jeff reformed the band several years ago with enough players to reproduce ALL THE NOTES from ELO's songs. Jeff at lead, and a group of real professionals making awesome music. The entire DVD is two hours long. You can watch the entire concert and still want more!
Strange Magic, from ELO, is an absolutely beautiful song. What makes it such an ethereal piece is: the two pianos (the other being electric), smooth bass, sweeping strings, solo guitars, and the acoustic rhythm guitar which is plugged into an audio phase shifter [phaser]. I'm a musician myself; I play many instruments.
I just have to chime in here. ELO, no matter how people try to compare their music to other groups, created a sound of their own. They have not been matched in their uniqueness to this day. They are my favorite band, bar none. Timeless and over time, classic. I think they will live on long after I'm gone. I just hope more and more of the younger generations listen and appreciate their style and skill.
Yes.... They are E.L.O. The one and only. Try Jeff Lynne's E.L.O live in 2014 from Hyde Park, London or live from Wembley Stadium, London in 2017..... both concerts are incredible. Thank you for a wonderful reaction 👍😊
For your Labor Day podcast, a couple of ELO live suggestions : - Evil Woman live at Wembley Stadium. A similar vibe to Strange Magic, and you really see how they pull the orchestral/rock sound together. - Roll Over Beethoven live from the Zoom concert. A classic rock and roll song covered by everyone, but elevated to a rock orchestra extravaganza.
Nope, that's not the one I had in my mind. Check my comment to see which song I do consider their most beautiful. Of course, you are correct, Tara, that, "Telephone Line", is also an exquisite beauty of a ballad.
@@taradevine6026 Ironically, it was on the same album as, "Strange Magic, called, Face The Music. And then a few years later, "One Summer Dream", appeared on the B-Side of the 45 single of, "Mr. Blue Sky". But that version cut a portion of the song out, so be sure to listen to the original album version, which has a run time of, 5m and 48s. In fact, let me just put the proper link here for you: ua-cam.com/video/lK9MFxWpHgQ/v-deo.html
The video from the live Wembley show is excellent. As Tara notes, 'Telephone' is a good choice. Also, if you like a symphonic feel mixed with rock, Roger Waters (who wrote a ton of Pink Floyd's stuff as their bass player) writes rock operas, so his stuff has that epic feel that this, and a lot of ongoing Pink Floyd stuff, also has. It's different from this, but it's extremely artful, with super high production values. I'd recommend something off maybe Amused to Death, Like What God Wants, or maybe Gunner's Dream from The Final Cut.
"Fire On High" is a trip unlike any other. Also, pretty much anything off A New World Record is excellent, with special props to "Tightrope," "Rockaria," "Telephone Line," and "So Fine" and "Livin' Thing" as a set.
Also this is the single version, the album version is longer and has even more orchestra, One Summer Dream is on there and could be one of the most beautiful songs ever
You realy need to hear ELO - Tightrope. That is a wery special sound again. In this you can realy hear the sound of a UFO. It sounds like a theme song for a sci-fi movie.
They were a group of 7 members. Jeff Lynne Lead Guitar Vocals, Kelly Groucutt base guitar vocals, Bev Bevan Drums vocals, Mike Kaminski Violinist, Richard Tandy Keyboards, and 2 Cello players. This song was released from the album Face the Music in 1976
You need to get the live songs from the Wembley or bust show (2017) on DVD. Great performance and they have a spaceship above the stage with stacks of lasers.
Jeff Lynne writes, plays, and produces all of ELO original music. He has produced famous albums for Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, George Harrison, the Beatles Anthology, Joe Cocker, Paul McCartney, Bryan Adams, etc. Today, Jeff Lynne's ELO has a completely different lineup. The only original member who occasionally joins him is Richard Tandy, the keyboardist. Jeff's last two ELO albums has Jeff playing every instrument on the album. When he mixes a song, NOTHING gets lost or buried. Every instrument/lyric is heard distinctly. He truly is a musical genius.
this group was born out of the late 60s into the early70s, then founder member Roy wood left for creative reasons of his own and had his own group, ELO under Jeff and the other band members never looked back and rose to international super star status, and personally i cant name a bad number from ELO they have poured out great amazing music for 50 years or more,,geff has produced and performed with many superstar musicians even produced tracks for the Beatles the guy is super talented and is out there with other special artists, sadly many dead and gone from us now ,maybe performing for the gods
The much underrated 2001 album Zoom is one of my favourites and was my awakening to music, made me want to make music, I recommend from zoom, Ordinary Dream, Moment in Paradise, and State of Mind. Almost 100% of the album is played by Jeff Lynne himself and had one of the last ever George Harrison guitar parts on the album. Also for live videos, check out Telephone Line Live at Wembley, he's nearly 70 but his voice is soooo fuckin good still, like honey!
Jeff Lynne is a genius and sounds just as good if not better live even at the age of 74. You should listen to 'All Over The World' flash mob as it is such a happy song.
Best Elo song ever tightrope,in fact I think you can safely one of the best songs of all time, and the man in the band that played the violin he was called violinski fact.enjoy your vids.
For live ELO - try something from the mid 1970s - raw sound with 1x violin, 2x cellos (e.g. Portsmouth Guildhall 1976) or something from recent years with full orchestra (Hyde Park or Wembley shows) - you'll get totally different (but equally classy) vibes.
Formed from two bands in 1970,their early stuff is brilliant right upto when they disbanded in 86,Jeff went onto form The Travelling Wilburys with Tom Petty and a few other really big musiciansthe remaining band members formed ELO 2 who had a fair few years touring and playing existing ELO tracks......
For what it’s worth, this is the radio, or edited version of the song. There is a full version of the song which adds about 20 seconds of strings in the beginning that in my opinion is the only way to hear this song.
Jeff Lynne was a very good friend on the Beatles. But the original ELO was a collaboration between Jeff and Roy Wood from Wizzard. Roy left because he didn't like Jeff trying to rock it up (despite Roy's See My Baby Jive being so rocky.. I defy anyone to stop their feet from tapping), so it became Jeff's baby.
I would say at the time they came out, (and Yes I have seen them live since the early 70's) they were not hard Rock, now that leaves "Prog Rock" ( prog..restive Rock that came out of the UK, along with Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Yes, Blind Faith, Steve Winwood, Moody Blues,Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Alan Parsons Project, Procul Harem, Supertramp, and more. There are a few with part or full symphony with bands like Moody Blues, ELO, Procul Harem, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, as well occasionally touring with small symphonies some of the above bands. I have seen all these bands with and without symphony, indoors and outdoors. All were Brilliant, and saw most of them several times, everything they toured N. America, I am in Vancouver, Canada. I can listen to any song now, and am taken back to that very concert, very song played live, loud, with lasers, light shows etc. They are fond memories, being part of music, I saw many of the best bands, some are still going, and some retired or gone solo. I f you get a chance to see one of your favorite bands, you will remember it forever. Choose one you like and it transcends music into an experience, and you will leave with a great smile, lasting a few days, and humming or singing for days. Go with special friend or group that share musical likes. Enjoy your experience of music from the 70's, 80's, 90s.

People will go with 'Telephone Line' as their best 'slow' song, although 'Shangri La' is beautiful, as is 'Need Her Love' and 'Wishing'. However, ELO really come alive with their amazing song called 'Tightrope'. You won't be disapointed with all those instruments. If you want rock from ELO then try 'Do Ya'. You arn't even at the entrance of the rabbit hole yet 😁 ua-cam.com/video/j7cyiWpX_HU/v-deo.html Try this link for a live version of 'Evil Woman' at Wembley. I wouldn't listen to others' ratings of the songs. You might be able to get a general consensus into the better songs, but individually they vary so much as to subjective analysis. I like more of their lesser-known songs than their hits, actually. Like Last Train to London, Believe me now/Stepping Out, Night in the City, Standing in the rain, Twilight, Secret Messages, Tightrope. I keep discovering new ones I like.
Please react to: “Let’s Go All the Way” by Sly Fox (1985). If you do, you’d be one of the first to do so. It was a very popular song at the time, but has been since forgotten. You’d be bringing some high school memories back for some of us.
They have so many more hits! "Evil Woman" "Last Train to London" "Fire on High" "Showdown" "10538 Overture" the list goes on and on...

LED ZEPPELIN "WHEN THE LEVEE BREAKS"..It Is IMPORTANT To Know That This Song Was Inspired By The Great Mississippi Flood Of 1927..The Most Destructive Flood In U.S. History..Over 500+ Souls Would Be Lost..
R.I.P...Because Of The Lack Of Accurate Record Keeping At The Time,, It Is Believed The Number Of Lives Lost Is Actually Much Higher..In Some Areas The Flood Waters Would Reach Over 30 Feet (Roughly 2 Stories High)
Spring of '76 was when this si gle was a hit.
Strange Magic comes from Face The Music in 1975.
You need to see live footage of them. Try Their Wembley concert. They are using cellos violins guitars
Great review of a great song.
Shangri-la is another great song.
ELO. I NEED HER LOVE ❤️ 👍
wow guys you have to see there wembley concert it is epic
this song gives me a men who stare at goats vibe 🤣😂👍👍🌞✌🏻
The verse section of this song always make me think that Radiohead was perhaps listening to this when they wrote "My Iron Lung" from THE BENDS..
You arn't even at the entrance of the rabbit hole yet 😁

1976 off the album A New World Record
check out Last Train to London. it's a jam.
elo fushion which works very well, vey also did diferent styles of music, versatile.
I believe it's called classic rock...
Checxk out ELO's "Night in the City" and "Big wheels" off their OUT OF THE BLUE album.
Can you look into Lonesome lullaby by ELO?
Olivia Newton John Xanadu Original Version Remastered HD (1980)
You need to listen to Living thing , you will love that one 👍
You should do ELO's evil woman live at Wembley
Please react to: “Let’s Go All the Way” by Sly Fox (1985). If you do, you’d be one of the first to do so. It was a very popular song at the time, but has been since forgotten. You’d be bringing some high school memories back for some of us.
Came out in late 70s early 80s
'75 actually.
BTWAYYYY LIKE BYRON COMMENTED ( FIRE ON HIGH ) OPENS UP FACE THE MUSIC AND IT'S FYYYYYYYRRRRRRR!!! LMAO :)
You should listen to ELO "Turn To Stone".
