TDI Swap Second Gen 4Runner coolant system

I would like to do this swap on my 96 4Runner would it be hard to keep the stock automatic tranny?

As far as I know, you cannot retain the stock automatic transmissions. You'd have to switch to the r150 5 speed. Part of the good thing about the TDI is the miles per gallon, and automatic transmissions tend to make MPG worse. TDI s are pretty rough on trannies too, and the automatic tranny of those years aren't known for handling power.
