🤣😂My first driving experience was on board this car. I was 15 years old at the time, and this is the year 1995. My uncle visited us at home and he left the car outside with its keys. I was able to start it and drive without my uncle noticing me. What a pleasure. Greetings from Algeria
I have had three Renault 5's and loved them all. My first car was a 1984 TL, I wish I could find it in a barn somewhere. I am on my second Supercinq, a rare 1986 GTL 3 door. With the 1.4 engine it is both nippy yet quiet at speed due to tall gearing. It is extremely comfortable too.
My first car was a Renault 5, second generation. It was built in 1987, and I bought it in 1994 for £850. It was my student-mobile, and had 112,000 miles on it when I sold it 5 years later. When I lived in Rennes in north-west France, many used to double-take when seeing a right hand drive version. When I lived in Berlin a few months later, the clutch cable snapped so I had to get it repaired a Renault dealership who needed to wait for 2 weeks to get parts imported from England. Because of its low weight, it could out-corner most other cars. With its manual choke and a cassette player, it was enormously fun to get around in.
So happy and proud that mine Renault 5 Campus is one of 9600200 one ever... It was my childhood-dream to have the 5...and a year ago i got one. Red, five dors... Dreams do come truth, just, sometimes, You have to help them a little... Alllllll the best Renault 5 people from Milan from Serbia!!!!
I too dreamt of the Renault 5 as a child, not only I had some of my relatives having one, but also because I used to read Spirou comics in my childhood and he had one. Eventually, when I got my driving license I bought a (used) 1982 GTL. It was a good first car.
Lucky you! We in Australia never had the privilege of the Renault 5. A few were seen here as unofficial imports, but I know of only 1 which is still 'alive'. I have heard about it, seen one photo of it, but I haven't seen it in the metal. :(
QUE PUEDO DECIR....UN REPORTE MAS QUE SENSACIONAL GENIAL.... TENGO UN R 5 Y AUNQUE LA MAYORIA DICEN QUE LO ELIMINE ESO JAMAS SUCEDERA.....YA POCOS QUEDAN..... I own one of the few Renault 5s in my province (In Canada they stopped selling here in the 80s), and I always marveled at how modern the bodylines for a 70s car. It too many more years for everyone else in the North American car market to catch up.
Yep, the Renault 5 checked all boxes. I had a dark blue one in Paris and it could be everyone's car--it defied. I actually liked the large plastic parts very much, modern and easy to clean---it went everywhere with no problems Super car.
i just bought a new... old ...1985 Renault 5 TSE.. and looking forward to hit the roads with it..just love these little sympatic cars.. very well designed.. and still economical.. :)
In the 80's Sun Imports Int. was a "grey market" importer in Florida that imported the Renault R5 TURBO 2 . The homoligated Rally version with the mid-mounted engine & tube chassis . I had the opportunity to ride in a few . They were insane fast & highly collectable today .
Wonderful little car. I wish Renault will bring it back in electric form. Originally it might have been designed for youngsters but it holds appeal for all age groups over time. One thing which I find particularly appealing is the short front overhang. Wheels in all four corners of a car (with minimal overhangs) brings technical advantages as well as esthetic advantages. Oh I so want to something like this coming back:)
Thanks for putting this up....1st car I drove was the 8, the end of that previous iteration , never thought about the 5 much , but this puts it in context . It also puts the layout of the 5 in context , the 4 & 5 the 8 layout turned through 180 degrees with CV joints & then a crisp little skin.
When I first heard that the 5 was first sold in 1972, I thought 'isn't that a decade earlier than it looks?!' For a young man to envision a design like that nearly 50 years ago, it makes the Lamborghini Miura also designed by a young man of the same year, imply the best designs are from those fresh out of college!
Best years of my teens/early 20's were spent hooning around in a Citroen AXGT. Loved that car. Now in my mature years I'd love either a Renault 4 or Citroen 2CV
I had one of the last Renault 5 made a 1996 campus with a 1.4 fuel injection engine one had great handling would and performance it would shame a lot of modern hatches much missed
I have seen all these cars in real life and have had 2 renault 5's a 5 TL and a 5TS excellent cars. I have been a macanic in a renault garage wen I had these cars. Brings back good memories.
I learned to drive, and passed my test in a renault 5. I had a 5 turbo, loved it. now I have a clio williams, had it for many years and will never part with it. I drive many different cars day in day out working in the motor trade.but I still have yet to find anything that is as good to drive as the renault hot hatches.
My Aunt had a Renault 5 LeCar, she used to drive like a rally driver it was fun to go places with her all over Vancouver, there were quite a few of these on the roads in Canada in the early 80s
Owned my R5 Gt turbo from 1990-2002. Still regret selling it... I really liked 5's in general and the turbo alpine, mid engined ones etc etc a whole lot more.
This was my family's first car around 1980 in Mexico. A 1976 Red R5 nicknamed and known in Mexico as "El Zapatito" ( The little shoe). Great memories, loved the thing :)
My first car was a 1974 Renault 5GL with the gear stick in the dash. it had a huge pull back sunroof and a little 850cc engine. it was brilliant. l owned 4 more after that, up to a new one in 1994. They were really reliable and never let me down. The worst car after that was a VW Golf, it was terrible. Renault aren't the same anymore.
Bought my first 5GTL in 1978, loved it, and I'm now (2017) on my seventh - a 1988 auto 5 Monaco, called Grace of course. Gorgeous little lady, very demure, and reliable... with THREE (count'em!) forward speeds! My most loved was a '95 1.4l Campus Prima, 5-speed manual, a real brahman of a car - I could throw it around the road or racetrack with complete confidence, and it had loading and economy performance to match any of the large 'practical' estates. So sad it rusted out in every corner. If someone could start making SuperCinq body shells, there's parts enough in garages across the UK to resurrect at least a thousand Pocket Rockets!
Has previously only been interested in Volvo, but came unexpectedly just over a R5. Never thought I would enjoy it but I did , a really cool little car. :)
i had the ts in late 70´s it had doble dash with one more square for a r.p.m counter , the side mirrors were sportive and high seats like a camaro and it was powerfull in the roads of my country, Portugal
Nice little cars. When it was replaced by the Clio in 1990 it remained on sale alongside the Renault Clio as a low spec economy car & production of the R5 was transferred to the Revoz factory in Slovenia until 1996
we had a bronze 1986 renault 5 1.1tl D57SVL it didnt like starting from cold and and rusted badly. it was pretty reliable dead easy to fix and very good on fuel. it didnt like going over 50mph due to it having 4 gears
Sold in the USA as the “LeCar”. I had one! A rare FOUR door. It rode real soft like a Caddy. Well made. Only annoying thing is it would pop out of gear. Also, the odd “U” shaped exhaust manifold down pipe cracked, melting a lot of wires. The starter motor is impossible to get at too. With that said, I loved this car!
@auxmike: Loved my R5 ("Le Car") glad to know yours popped out of gear too -- there was a kind ring that would pop off and leave you with minimal shifting ability, making the shifter feel more rubbery than usual :) In Quebec the R5's looked the same (US headlamps, which really ruined the front - I was able to source a set euro's and retrofit mine), but instead of the "Le Car" as part of the graphics package they had "La Cinq" ("the 5"). commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:La_Cinq_(Renault_5_sold_in_Quebec).jpg I seem to remember I even had the horribly ugly round single headlamps when I bought the car. Such a shame the French abandoned the US market.
French Car's.. Thy get into your Blood. I used to be a FORD guy.. I have lost could how many Mk1 Fiesta's I have owned. But for the last 15 Years and x3 Pug's and x2 Citroen's.... I could not, would not look at a another FORD.. Except for a MK1 Fiesta....
A lot , clearly not all , of Americans cannot understand the allure of a great little everyman car .In the States the Renault 5 was badged " Le Car " and had minimal success due to problems in getting parts . Most of the people that bought them were the adventurous type bored with standard fare .
I think it was only sold in Canada after a certain point because the American emission standards were more stringent in the early 1980s than Canadian emission standards. Hence why the Porsche 959 was sold in Canada and not the U.S. in the early 1980s.
What Americans don't appreciate is over priced and unreliable cars which develop rust holes in the body in less than a year. The Renaults sold in the U.S. were pieces of sh*t on wheels. My father owned one and it was unrepairable in less than year. If Renault made and sold a worthwhile car maybe they would not have had to withdraw from the U.S. market with their tale between their legs?
I have a "Super 5" GT Turbo and it's a great car, the Garret T2 turbo is a big improvement on the T1 and it's very quick and also proactical. It's my third.... Prices are shooting up too. But the video rather embelishes the fact that it took Renault until 1984 to catch up with the Mini and have an E-W engine instead of N-S, with an odd gearlever and engine protruding into the passenger cabin. The big difference was the hatch. Also, it might have "done well" in the Monte Carlo but the Mini Cooper did that 10 years earlier.
Someone at the Renault Club of North America found a leopard in the middle of a field about 10 years ago. He dropped new batteries in it and now wins burn-out contests :) I still have an '86 LeCar. So far, the only parts I've had go wrong were American made replacements :(
my stamp dealer friend's daughter had one..she had trouble of some kind and somehow I had the idea to spin the fuses around and that fixed it so from then, I was a guru of the Renault 5....the nearest Renault dealer was 90 miles away.
Some who remember this car compared it to a Yugo. I highly don't agree but loosely I could see the comparison for non car guys. The Le Car was actually a step up from such here in the states. I remember our gas station owner driving one as a young kid. He didn't seem to complain too much.
I will love my renault 5GT turbo till the day i die.i bought it when i was 18 now im 28 10 years and not a day pass.I will keep loving it and i will restore it from that crash from idiot cause too it when it was parked.i nearly had a heart stroke when i saw it that morning.
i love the look of the 80's Turbo, but the only experience i've had with Renault is in videogames, with the Rally Car in this case. so to me, they're fun to drive and they never break down, and their mileage is comparable to any other rally car. best of all, they cost practically nothing and you don't have to live with them.
the TS that appears with the blonde woman is already late 70´s dash but with 70´s finishings outside, mine was all black and the TX 1.4 had more power and seats like the turbo ,the first turbo´s only sold in red and metalized blue but more equiped than the regular model ,only later was released the alpine turbo because of it´s success in rally´s, i had both after the 70´s TS but at the same time had both renault alpine´s from the 70´s, a rich person in my city bought them and i kept them after he was tired of them
Had one. The only front wheel drive car I've driven that handled well in snow. Loved the gear stick through the dashboard - sheer brilliance. But, as with all Euro-trash cars, on a quiet night you could hear it rusting away.
HEY, HEY HEY,...... ? HIJO DE LA GRAN BRETANA!! THE MAXI 5 MADE IT INTO TO GROUP B. JUST LIKE ''''''THE BEST OF THE WORLD''''' BRITISH MINI 6R4? THAT NOW BELONGS TO GERMANY, AND THE RS200 ...... THAT GOT GROUP B RALLY BANNED....... SO YOU CAN WATCH FORMULA 1 AND TRY TO GIVE MCLAREN A HELP WITH ALL THAER TECHNICAL PROBLEMS....HAVE A BIT OF RESPECT FOR YOUR NEIGHBORS YOU PIG! AND GET YOUR SELF A MORRIS MARINA NEXTIME?
A company rep who became a family friend who used to visit here had one as a company car , then another , we liked it,s neat , clever space saving design , great fuel economy & quiet , musical engine , this prompted me to save up for a 5 TS , what more can I say .
W roku1978 dostałem takiego machbox resoraka od mamy mój pierwszy machbox piękny samochód czasami t Akiego widzę na ulicy to przypominam sobie piękne czasy dzieciństwa to był model otwierane drzwi i prze, tylna szybkie wyglądał pies. Super film pozdrawiam serdecznie
Chuck Beck made a wild Ford Festiva that was made in the shadow of the 5 he stuffed a Taurus SHO 220 HP YAMAHA V6 MID mounted wide track RWD it was called SHOGUN back in 88 think it was 1,800 lbs it out preformed every factory car imported in the US , Ferrari Lambo..
What’s yours called 😂 Thanks for bringing back some happy memories. Such a great car just don’t have an accident in one ! And you don’t giggle like that anymore when testing the latest crossover SUV 🤣
Anyone excited about the battery electric 5? I am, it could easily be a global car, not exactly affordable, but I would pay more for a hot hatch with those looks. Hopefully more people get to watch this movie now that the new 5 was announced. Thank you again for posting the video.
The only downfall i had with my Reanault % was the clutch cable assembly. It whent GY a few times, but that could have been due to sub standard materials being used in the 1990's.Other than that it was a fantastic little car. :)
It is so tragic that Renault went the front wheel drive way back then. Today and in hindsight we know that rear wheel drive, even rear engine would be much more desirable by knowledgeable drivers. None the less, the 4,5,12,16 were good cars, but the 8,10, A110 are all much more sought after today.
It was IMMENSELY MODERN for its day ánd it aged extremely well too! Give it a few tweaks and it'll be good for another 10 years. Remember thís car came to market 2 years before GOLF 1 in 1974 did.
Incredible as american car industry were such ahead in quality and design that time back and how european catch up and today is much better than american auto-industry.
I had their model called ' black beauty' - black body with a fold back top, mag wheels, leather steering wheel, tach, front hood scoop and air dam below the bumper. It was a fun car but not reliable- lots of engine problems. Cooling system was the worst. Had a friend that had one too, it lasted her about 2 years.
🤣😂My first driving experience was on board this car. I was 15 years old at the time, and this is the year 1995. My uncle visited us at home and he left the car outside with its keys. I was able to start it and drive without my uncle noticing me. What a pleasure. Greetings from Algeria
Love this film, I am lucky enough to have a 1989 Supercinq 3 door and I love it , such a rare car these days.
Wow, what a fantastic job they did on this feature! I had a 1981 four door and I miss it so....
had a 1982 gtl, 4 doors, 5 gears really miss it
Renault 5 TL ....JKF23P (GB)...my first car.....loved it!

Cold War motors on UA-cam has 2. He just bought the second one.
Great story!!! Love these little cars. When I return to Europe, I would love to own one!
Yep, the Renault 5 checked all boxes. I had a dark blue one in Paris and it could be everyone's car--it defied. I actually liked the large plastic parts very much, modern and easy to clean---it went everywhere with no problems Super car.
best care ever....I had a 1982 R5 and it was the best!
I had a 1978. Little car with such a soft ride. Loved it
i just bought a new... old ...1985 Renault 5 TSE.. and looking forward to hit the roads with it..just love these little sympatic cars.. very well designed.. and still economical.. :)
I owned a couple of TSEs in the late 1990s, both were supremely comfortable and very easy to maintain.
72hp
Renault engines were used in the 300 series. They were supposed to buy stakes in Volvo AB instead of Ford USA.
Absolutely incredible design had 2 such a car full of character. Comfortable Good to Drive Cheap to Run, absolutely fantastic.
Fantastic, the 5 really was a game changer - Owned several :)
currently fully restoring my r5 gt turbo what a big job but will be well worth it :)
In the 80's Sun Imports Int. was a "grey market" importer in Florida that imported the Renault R5 TURBO 2 . The homoligated Rally version with the mid-mounted engine & tube chassis . I had the opportunity to ride in a few . They were insane fast & highly collectable today .
My first car, an 11 year old 5L. Bought in 1984. Still with me today 2022.
Truely astonishing, one in a 1,000 from that era made it until today !
Apparently an EV R5 is coming

Mr first car a Renault 5 campus F908AHG.. Bought it new in 1989... happy days

My mom used to have one !
With a sun roof.
She always complained about the performance but she used to like it!
Best years of my teens/early 20's were spent hooning around in a Citroen AXGT. Loved that car. Now in my mature years I'd love either a Renault 4 or Citroen 2CV
Looking at buying one of these with a turbo. Quite excited for the test drive.

Should have kept the turbo could have bought the raider cheap kicking myself now!!
My Aunt had a Renault 5 LeCar, she used to drive like a rally driver it was fun to go places with her all over Vancouver, there were quite a few of these on the roads in Canada in the early 80s
They rusted too quick for us younger Canadian to enjoy. And our parent taught they were garbage because America was apparently better?
My parents had a R5
Owned my R5 Gt turbo from 1990-2002. Still regret selling it... I really liked 5's in general and the turbo alpine, mid engined ones etc etc a whole lot more.
Racked up over 100k in one. Good reliable car. Auto box was sweet and surprisingly fast.
A trifle harsh. Still a fair car for it's time.
Panda of the same generation is amazing. I have 1 (my 3rd) but the R5 is cool too. Very expensive now!
This was my family's first car around 1980 in Mexico. A 1976 Red R5 nicknamed and known in Mexico as "El Zapatito" ( The little shoe). Great memories, loved the thing :)
WE had a renault rapid, 5 and 5 cabriolet.... THESE CARS ARE FANTASTIC ... i dont know why they are so underrated
12:55 - I remember this. Ration coupons were issued 'just in case' but they were never used as rationing didn't happen.
Bought my first 5GTL in 1978, loved it, and I'm now (2017) on my seventh - a 1988 auto 5 Monaco, called Grace of course. I have one R5 alpine turbo here in mexico and I love it. Its the best car always. Better than an ugly vw beatle
The Alpines (naturally aspired and turbo) and GT Turbo are the best in the range. Some of them (GT Turbo) are still racing in rallies today.
Lovely cars. Whole story reminiscent of the Mini and Mini Cooper.
I miss my 5 ,had it for 14 years 😢
Me too, I loved my little 5...
Has previously only been interested in Volvo, but came unexpectedly just over a R5. Never thought I would enjoy it but I did , a really cool little car. :)

PLS ,DONATE A SUBSCRIBER FOR A CAUSE
Driving in the 70s isnt the same as today.
Loved my Le Car 🚗. Wish I still had it with a 5 Speed .
Wow...! is a original and beautiful french car...!
Nice little cars. When it was replaced by the Clio in 1990 it remained on sale alongside the Renault Clio as a low spec economy car & production of the R5 was transferred to the Revoz factory in Slovenia until 1996

@auxmike: Loved my R5 ("Le Car") glad to know yours popped out of gear too -- there was a kind ring that would pop off and leave you with minimal shifting ability, making the shifter feel more rubbery than usual :) In Quebec the R5's looked the same (US headlamps, which really ruined the front - I was able to source a set euro's and retrofit mine), but instead of the "Le Car" as part of the graphics package they had "La Cinq" ("the 5"). commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:La_Cinq_(Renault_5_sold_in_Quebec).jpg
I seem to remember I even had the horribly ugly round single headlamps when I bought the car. Such a shame the French abandoned the US market.
I just got myself an Renault 5 Gte!
Great film and great car 👍👍👍
I owned 2 LeCars. Loved them both!
Lovely story. I have always liked french cars
I really enjoyed that. Thanks for posting.
my first car was a R5 GTL, metalic blue with the grey plastic side panels
Cant Believe that in 2016 it will be 20 Years since the end of the Renault 5.

+The Pumpking King French cars are wretched, unreliable pieces of junk. I have yet to meet a person with a decent one.

The Pumpking King If you say so mate.
Greatest car EVER
Ha ha ha ha ha - good one
The Volvo 240 is a must better candidate for that title.
A wonderful trip down memory lane, special car with treasured memories

I really like the 5 turbo since playing GT4....midship hatchback u dont see everyday
the TS that appears with the blonde woman is already late 70´s dash but with 70´s finishings outside, mine was all black and the TX 1.4 had more power and seats like the turbo ,the first turbo´s only sold in red and metalized blue but more equiped than the regular model ,only later was released the alpine turbo because of it´s success in rally´s, i had both after the 70´s TS but at the same time had both renault alpine´s from the 70´s, a rich person in my city bought them and i kept them after he was tired of them
Excellent programme.
And with all UK-cars :)
which aspect of the 6R4 was German?
I enjoyed this greatly. What a car
I used to have '87 2-door GTL model .. very handsome little car ..:)
it was not so slow either ..
A company rep who became a family friend who used to visit here had one as a company car , then another , we liked it,s neat , clever space saving design , great fuel economy & quiet , musical engine , this prompted me to save up for a 5 TS , what more can I say .
Strong and hard to kill vehicle... Had 2 and if I see another one I buy it
It was cute, but mine was a piece of shite. (US versions)
A friend bought one and hers was also terrible.
Overheated and blew the engines on both.
my first car, i miss my Renault 5 turbo :(
i simply LOVE History.
As a former owner of an adorable little R5 I wanna say: Thank you! for this great upload
W roku1978 dostałem takiego machbox resoraka od mamy mój pierwszy machbox piękny samochód czasami t
Akiego widzę na ulicy to przypominam sobie piękne czasy dzieciństwa to był model otwierane drzwi i prze, tylna szybkie wyglądał pies. Super film pozdrawiam serdecznie
I've a Renault 5 Prima, i love it!
The R5 wagon looks great on paper. To bad it did not come in to life.
The Renault 5 will be making comeback as a retro electric car in 2022-23
Love my Renault 5 TR ...great machine! :)
Why did not show the engine and talk more about the price at the time, cylinders, mile per hour, transmission,...
It whent GY a few times, but that could have been due to sub standard materials being used
in the 1990's.Other than that it was a fantastic little car. :)
Yes, my clutch cable snapped once. Also, had to replace both drive shafts, which were noisy.
I had a Gordini turbo....for all its faults,it was the car I regret selling the most.... Like a Jack Russel,,,just got in trouble all the time
5:44. Oh my god. Someone described this picture to a guy at American Motors and they came up with the Pacer.
it looked pretty modern for 1972
I had their model called ' black beauty' - black body with a fold back top, mag wheels, leather steering wheel, tach, front hood scoop and air dam below the bumper. It was a fun car but not reliable- lots of engine problems. Cooling system was the worst. Had a friend that had one too, it lasted her about 2 years.
i have owned a few escort rs turbos,205 gti,clio 16v,clio 172,172 cup,civic type r etc etc but never got round to buying a r5 gt turbo....gutted
had a 5,if you drove it hard it boiled..suspension was comical but i still loved it..then i bought a starlet...different league.
It is amazing that the mini is popular here in the US and not the 5 as it is a much better car.
