  • It featured in Never Say Never, one of the most iconic car chases of any Bond Film. As a mid engined hatch back it also possibly one of the craziest designs of all time. Everybody loves it.. and this is the extra special first run car too.

Jack, it's a typically French car for it's time, a time when Renault said, "we are the French, we will make this car any way we like it", and they made fantastic "drivers" cars, pieces of stylish art. Beauty in the eye of the beholder. You come up with some very"entertaining " picks, excellent 👍.

I can't tell you how lucky I was as an Irish immigrant growing up in Canada. Same age as you, and getting a R5 Gordini as my very first car. Took my license test in it. I remember the tester asking me, what was it? He hadn't a clue. They were somewhat popular in Quebec but not in English speaking, Toronto. Mine had the same Moto Lita steering wheel as the series 2 turbo cars had.... Loved that. Of course, I always wanted one of these so I did what any sensible teenager would do and put the widest set of tyres I could possibly fit on the back. 195 versus the 145's on the front. I'd kill to find another one!

Have driven the Series 2 extensively & worked on it, not difficult to maintain, just time consuming as various bits of trim have to be removed to access the engine.
Unbelievable to drive, even if it is slightly “cammy” & the boost delivery is a bit sudden. With modern tyres it’s absolutely amazing!

I used to be VW mad so got a '72 Beetle when I was 17 and had a '61 bug also... used to say shit like "air cooled all the way", but then one freezing cold winter's night I got a lift from a girlfriend's brother in his black R5 Turbo, with blacked out windows and a nice sound system, all dark and warm and cosy inside. I had been scraping ice off the inside of my windscreen in the bug that day... Something fundamental changed within me that night, and within a year I had my very own R5 Turbs. I worked my arse off and got myself a sound system too - Cerwin Vega sub, Alpine 6x9s and a big Kenwood amp. Owning and driving that car was an amazing feeling - I used to drop my friends off and try to head home, but I was addicted to the feeling of driving this car with my favourite tunes blasting, just carving up the country roads by myself.
Then one day me and a friend were racing down one of our regular country roads late at night. He was in his Clio 16v (Mk1), and behind me putting some pressure on. As I was coming around a gradual bend at 80-odd mph, I saw the mud tracks on the road where a tractor had been coming in and out of a field during the day. I hit the mud, and the car instantly spun, sliding sideways over the kerb which deleted all of the wheels. The car the smashed into the drainage ditch between the road and field, and ricochet back out and over the road into the ditch on the other side. I came around to the fire brigade getting me out of the back seat of the car, the driver's seat was there empty with the seatbelt still done up. My Sub box, shelf and amp, along with everything else that was in the car like tools, was scattered all over the road, as well as in the hedge and field. I suffered a broken shoulder so went off in the ambulance and got loads of drugs and gas which was nice. I came to again in A&E, to the sight of about 6 friends looking down at me, all of them absolutely gurning their faces off on E's - they were out at a rave (Exodus) and heard about the accident and just left the rave mid session to come to the hospital. I'll never forget that - the 90's were a wild time!
Anyway that turned out to be more waffle than I planned. But cars can do that to us... I am very passionate and emotional about certain cars and the R5 will always hold a special place in my heart.

Regarding the handling, I completely agree. It feels like a much bigger car. Utterly planted. I drove mine pretty enthusiastically, and never got close to its limits. I did get it sideways on a roundabout once, but just eased off the power slightly and it immediately came back into line. Fun, yes. Scary? No. Mind you, I never drove it hard in the wet!
Don't forget that the Turbo 1 or 2 can corner at 0.94g. Only slightly less than the 1998 Subaru Impreza 22B, for example. Incredible for its time.
Oh and the ride comfort? Sublime. Not even "good for a performance car". Sublime. Not Citroen-esque, but never harsh or hard. Puts many a modern car to shame.

The Tyres are called Michelin TRX . They were all the rage back then. You could get them on R30TX, Peugeot 505turbo, 604gti, CX turbo2, BMW 528i 6 and 7 series. And some Ferrari's. Probably some other cars i forgot. These days new repops are quite expensive and modern tyre technology has advancced quite a lot. What many owners did was swapping the TRX wheels for Gotti wheels.

Currently about £280 + VAT per tyre. Metrics are not for regular use these days. I remember the Michelin TRXs I had on my 635CSi would be fine for the first year or so, but then the rubber would harden after that.....which was less than helpful if the road was greasy or wet.

My uncle bought a T2 in 1983. It was in a metallic brown with a lighter brown shade of seats and carpet. Not his first choice but it was someones order that he managed to get and it was still a good looking car. I do remember it being off the road for 3 months while tyres came from France though. Back in the day it felt very quick indeed when 160bhp was enough and cars weighed less than a tonne.

  • @clockdva20
    @clockdva20 Місяць тому +1

The Turbo 1 was built to the Group 4 rule the later Turbo 2 ran in Group B.
I saw both the works Turbo 1 and the Later Turbo 2 Works Rally Cars doing a Demo at a Renault racing weekend driven by the winning of the 1980 Monti. The car was at its best on Tarmac and since the French domestic Rally Championship is run on that surface it was the car to beat , whereas the WRC Features sealed and mixed surface event basically the Works team targeted the French Monti and Corsica where the cars had their best results. Some of the works drivers would take bets with each other on whose engine would blow up first .because they used even more boost in the Works cars and some very special fuels that poor push rod 1.4 ltr was stressed to the limit 200 bhp + but some estimate say as hi as 350 bhp far win at all cost Corsia Rally. The Turbo 2 or Maxi turbo I have seen quote in the History of Group B saying their last victory with Car on the I'll fated 1986 rally the cars were said to be near 400 bhp but unofficial some say 500 using trick fuels that were probably far from legal. But that rally was only remembered for the tragic deaths of the Lancia Deltas Driver and Copilot so we may never know what is fiction or fact. I would have been 13 in 1980 there were a couple rare cars at that time in the town where I lived one was a series one Audi Quattro owned by the printer of the local newspaper and the other was a yellow Renault 5 Turbo. works colours replica. I think that was owned by a local car insurance salesman. Who I later got to know better. He had a really nice car collection hidden away in a warehouse in town. Were I late rented a workshop were to my lasting shame I passed on the chance to buy a Lancia Delta HF Integrale EVO 1 the first 16 valve version for 3000 pounds in top condition though it had been standing for a while. I needed the money for my business at the time whereas a Van was needed over a car. Still when you see how much they fetch now though the real silly money is still for the last EVO 2 Cars.
Still getting back to the R5 Turbo always loved the car and Renault never really came up with anything as good again. Yes we had the Clio V6 but it was not the same looks or fun wise.
But the late 70's through to end of Group B From the Stratos to the Delta S4 they just designed pure Race/Rally cars and then sold a few to the public. We will never see that again.

But it sounds from Jack as though it's really quite competent all round. Also, it has the image in this video of being a big performance car, like it could be an alternative to an Esprit Turbo or Alpine A310, and it looks surprisingly roomy inside. Jack has just mentioned that in video, damn it!

The driving experience, the sound, and the power reminds me of my car, a 1979 Subaru DL (hatchback/wagon) with a 1989 Subaru EA71S (factory race engine from the FJ1600 open wheel cars in Japan) and a 1972 Subaru 1300G 5 speed dog gear transaxle. The engine is further modified with 12.5:1 compression, oversized intake and exhaust valves, an even larger 310/310 duration camshaft, a modified single carb intake manifold with a 1 barrel Holley from a Ford inline 6, and GM HEI ignition triggered by an 85 Subaru hatchback distributor. The engine is a 1.6l flat 4 and makes 120hp at 6700 rpm, naturally aspirated. The car only weighs 1800 lbs. It definitely doesn't look anywhere near as cool, but it does have similar go kart like handling, fast acceleration (as long as you hold it to redline in each gear, the engine makes no power under 3500-4000 rpm), and a similar, but more rumbly sound, with crackles and pops on deceleration. The dog gear transaxle along with a 4 puck unsprung clutch makes for very quick shifting. Because it is a dog gear transmission, you can shift it clutchless once you've taken off from a stop. It's much less refined than the Renault though. The interior is basically made of cardboard, vinyl, and hard plastic that vibrates and creaks from the engine noise and vibration. The suspension is extremely stiff so the whole car rattles going over a bump. It has manual brakes and manual steering, which is fine for such a light car. On the road it is not that fast, compared to some of the cars that are out there. On dirt, gravel, mud, or snow it's unstoppable though, especially since I have 175R13C mud terrain tires installed. It's such a basic car and has so few things installed (not even a radio), that I can carry every tool needed to fix most problems with it in a bag in the trunk. Now of course it is front engine and front wheel drive, not mid engine rear wheel drive. However with the low center of gravity because of the flat engine, the extremely light weight of the car, and the fact that the weight distribution is almost exactly 50/50 front to rear, it handles extremely well. The front wheel drive along with the low center of gravity means it can go through turns extremely fast without breaking traction in the rear at all and with no body roll. The only thing I wish I could find for it is the dual port cylinder heads from the 1971-72 EA63 engine, along with the camshaft from the same engine to use as a model for a custom cam. The EA71S is limited by the fact that it only has a single intake and exhaust port per pair of cylinders. You can somewhat get around that by using a large diameter exhaust header, and by replacing the intake manifold with individual carburetors directly over the intake ports, which is what I'll do next, but the EA62 heads are on another level. At one point I thought about building a spare EA71 block I have for a turbo, using the special carburetor off of, funny enough, the Renault 5 Turbo but I never got around to it, and I've decided I really like the naturally aspirated, high compression, high revving engine that is currently there.

I owned one for 2 years (from new). Off boost, an old stock volkswagen (not surprising with its 1.4 liter engine). On boost, a Porsche. I bought based on the car magazine articles, and I was very disappointed.

Just curious but what were you expecting? You have to plan ahead, stir the gears and wait for the hit in the R5T. After all, it was a homologated rally car, not a Corvette. As you said, an R5 Turbo has NO torque below 3800rpm but once on boost, it's an angry box of French hate and way more interesting to drive then a Porsche 911. Porsche made 198,000 G-body 911's compared to just under 5000 R5 Turbos. I don't think I could ever bring myself to sell my R5 Turbo. It embodies everything that makes cars interesting.

This car gave me a bigger ******** than anything back in 1981, when I was 16 and an eager car enthusiast trying to get his license. To me, this was more real-world exciting, if you can believe that, than other exotics like the Countach or the 512 BB.
