Awesome! My fiancé just finished my work desk. I love contrasting colors so I’m going dark with the legs, trim, and edge banding and light for the table top. I’ll mask tonight and come back with an update after staining tomorrow 🤞🏽
Update: I definitely recommend this method. I used blue painters tape because I didn’t plan on leaving my house. I was watching another video where someone suggested using a box cutter (I used an exacto-knife) or something of that sort to score the edge of the tape so the stain will seep into that line versus onto the wood under the tape that’s being taped off. I applied the stain with a napkin trying my hardest not to wipe just dabbed, then also dabbed the excess and wipe the rest as instructed. (btw - I left the tape on over night and stained the next day) I also took from that video, peeling the tape off at a 45 degree angle. Came out looking crisp very happy with the results 💜

Thank you for sharing this with us, I was thinking that I would employ this method for my kitchen cabinets. But after seeing this video I think I will not do this. You saved me a ton of time and money. Thanks

Another trick is to score the wood with the xacto knife when cutting the tape into the desired design. Capillary action will draw stain at the edges into the channel created by scoring resulting in clear, crisp separation.

so you can use that technique with normal stain? and the score isnt noticeable afterwards?

@@tyyy00 I don't imagine it would be noticeable. The score holding the darker stain will just blend into the line.

3rd time’s the charm. was searching for this info as i’m going to do some personalized staining on some of my wooden handled tools and i figured bleeding would be an issue. The first 2 videos were chaotic and not helpful but you came through! I know this vid is old but thanks for the content! Hope you have a good one ✌🏻

320 grit. The smoother the wood is the less bleed. Also pressing your tape down firmly with a putty knife helps.

What brand are you using? We tried the Minwax like in the video, but we found better results with the varathane brand. You can use either painters tape or vinyl and wipe/brush over them like crazy and they don't bleed. It's much thicker than the minwax - but also a few dollars more per can.
