Stencil On Wood Projects Without Bleeding - 50 star stencil

  • This is how I use a 50 star stencil to build my flags and stencil on wood projects. Stenciling on wood without bleeding can be a challenge to say the least. A lot of times if you use standard stencils, as seen in some of my other videos, you get a lot of paint bleed under the stencil. The best way to prevent that is to have a stick on stencil. I tried craftbond to help the regular stencils stick better, but it never worked quite right. So I bought a Cricut Explore Air 2 for my stenciling. Now when building a flag, I make my own American Flag 50 star stencil. It works great for how I make wood signs and flags with stenciling. Now I get crisp clean lines when using the stencil. If the grain is deep on a piece of wood, you may still get a slight bleed, but it usually cleans up with a weeding tool you get with your Cricut. The stencil peels off after I'm done to reveal a nice crisp design. As you can see on this one of a kind wood Marine Corps flag I made recently, it came out absolutely beautiful. I recommend checking it out, or we sell the 50 star stencil on our Etsy store, linked below.

      Thanks for the video! I'm interested in getting a cricut now that I've tried to carve the stars and had a ton of difficulty making it clean. How long do you let the paint dry before peeling the vinyl?

    • @bradleygrzybek5528
      @bradleygrzybek5528 3 роки тому +1

      If you do not want it to bleed, put the stencil down paint the original color on it first. Let it dry with the stencil still on the area. After it is dry spray paint or paint the desired color and then take the stencil off. By doing these steps you create a sealed barrier on the stencil and this will prevent bleeding.

    I also have a cricket that I use for some of my stencil work on my wood signs and I have found as long as I use a white paint and a good stiff stencil brush I can get by with using cardstock paper and make reusable stencils and get multiple uses out of them you have to use the heavier cardstock and make sure that the paint that is on the stencil dries before reusing but it seems to work quite well and hit saves a decent amount of money in the long run I have been using a stencil I made of my logo to sign my work with for several months now and it seems to me work very well

    Hi really enjoying your videos, very informative and easy to follow along with. I'm new to this woodworking hobby, however must say I really enjoy it. I'm in the middle of building an outdoor piece for our backyard and just wondering can I use a stencil like this over something I've stained (gel stain) and then seal it with a clear coat or is that a no no painting over stain. I would hate to ruin my project at the last stage hence why I am looking for opinions before I just jump into something. Thanks for any help / advice you can pass along. I think my next project will be your farmhouse coffee table which was again a great video to be able to watch.

    Here is a little tip I’ve learned with painters tape, this might help with stencils,,,
    Unfortunately it’s a 2 step process...
    First step use a very dry brush,,, meaning wipe off almost all of the paint,, and very lightly brush over the edges,,,
    This very limited amount of paint doesn’t result in a lot of capillary action sucking the paint under the edge.
    This very light painting touch kind of seals the edges of your stencil or painters tape. Then go back around and use a wet brush to fully fill it in. The Beauty of this technique is by the time you have gone all the way around the stencil, the first time, the light coat will be dry and the second coat will be easy peasy.
    If you try this, please let me know if you can,,, if this also works for stencils
    Great videos

    Hey Matt. Thanks for sharing your videos. Has me back in the shop after close to a year of no interest.
    I’ve done painted wood signs for years and use a silhouette (the 1st gen) for cutting stencils. Some advise if you are still getting bleed. A coat of matte poly gives the stencil something to stick too.
    Also, after laying the stencil, use the background color first to paint in the stars. Let dry, then use white. You’ll get perfect lines every time.

      The too large is probably because you can actually only print a 11.5” x 11.5” area unless you get the 12x24 pad then you can print 11.5 x 23x5 area. I haven’t printing anything with layers. I keep it simple and get SVG files from Etsy to print

    Thank you so much for your videos. It has made want to try new things. Maybe i'm dense, but i don't understand the transfer paper part. If you put transfer paper over the stencil, aren't you covering up the holes you just cut out? Or did you remove the transfer paper after getting it in position? I didn't see that in the video.

    • @731Woodworks
      @731Woodworks  3 роки тому +1

      You used the transfer paper to get the stencil in place. Then remove the transfer paper, leaving just the stencil

      I’ve found that their service is lacking on what you can actually get. I typically go to Etsy and search for the svg file of whatever I want (for instance search 50 star svg ) and purchase the files that way. They are cheap and work great

      I'm about to pull my hair out.. the stars are about to get the best of me. I am using a mylar stencil that I got off of Amazon. I've tried 3 methods so far to get the stars on the blue background. First one I tried was using gloves and holding the stencil down by hand. I've tried using Mod Podge to seal the edges and still get the bleed thru... I tried a method of painting over the stencil with the same blue as the background then painted in white stars with little luck. Don't want to give up by any means but I am about out of ideas... any suggestions?

    • @731Woodworks
      @731Woodworks  3 роки тому

      It’s extremely difficult to get them absolutely perfect using that method. I always had some bleed through. I could usually clean most of it up with a sharp point like a razor. But never perfect. I ended up buying a Cricuit to make stick on stencils (see my video on it)

      @@Jimc4007 So I broke down and got a Cricut. Thus far this was the best way to get these things to not bleed. But I am up early as that is how I plan things.. and want to try putting polyurethane on my wood first, sealing all those little seams in the wood and then putting down the painted stars and then poly over it? That’s my next experiment! I too have been going crazy!

    Just a hint. Next time you use a stencil. Take a spray bottle with water and mist the back of the stencil. Place it on your subject. And it sticks..like really sticks! Then spray away. No bleeding

    Howdy Mr. 731...
    So...A Flag. Seems like everyone's doing them these days. Wasn't a road I was gonna travel, as I'm more of a "furniture" woodworker.
    But...I am trying to get my business up and running and.....and this is a BIG "AND"....
    My precious Baby Girl graduated High School this past year and....are ya ready....Is in her 6th week of Basic Training at the Texas Army National Guard (HOOYAAA!!).
    MY Baby Girl holding a M4, I'm gonna frame that picture.
    Anyways....So...I'm gonna make her a flag, similar to yours, but with the Army National Guard emblem.
    I went to Hobby Lobby in hopes to find a ready made emblem like the one in this video, but all they had was the one you used. Bummer.
    So, I ordered a few stencils. Was going to order yours but I guess you don't do that stuff anymore??
    Looked into getting a Cricut too....Oooyyy. I'll get one eventually as it seems like "smalls" are a good way to make money.
    Anyways...Just wanted to give you a shout....."""HEY MR. 731, MY BABY GIRL IS IN THE ARMY NATIONAL GUARD AND IM GONNA HONOR HER WITH ONE OF YOUR FLAGS!!!!""""
    Was that too loud, hahaha.
    I'm gonna torch mine though.
    I'll send ya pics in the brag board when I'm done

      Oh oh oh....P.S..
      As you do...I also watch TONS of videos to familiarize myself with the project I'm about to do.
      I found multiple videos about negating the "bleed out" of the paint using a stencil.
      Mog Podge (matte). Brush that on the area your going to stencil first, let dry (dries clear) and then do the stencil painting. Leaves crisp paint lines.

    Ah the irony of yet another patriotic person who violates the Marine Flag Code with nothing less than a Marine logo. Folks, if you actually read the Code, as we had to do in the USNA, you will see that this is desecration. Does he mean to be unpatriotic? No. Is he desecrating the flag as defined by the Flag Code? Yes.
