This was actually used by japanese house wives to protect their home and their children. The naginata is an extremely powerful weapon, and can double in some situations as a type of sword. The art we saw here is a tame demonstration of the form taught in days of old, and is more of a pattern or demo than an insight into the damage it can do.

    Demonstration of movements are great!
Note: When the teacher is demonstrating, it is better to remain silent, showing respect. Then, only when VERY necessary, the designated speaker explain a thing succinctly, refraining from using essoteric phrases, lest his speech make it sound mystical in any way. (It is, though called an art, really science, yes?)

They have different purposes, what you might see as a weakness gives strength in other aspects

That's because it is not a bo! It's Naginata! The staff would have a sharp blade on the end of it. Watch the episode of Deadliest Warrior where they try out the Naginata. Very effective!

It might be because this is just a demonstration, and therefore Kawashima-Sensei feels he can "show off" a bit more, but... would any of these big, flourishing and twirling strikes (which definitely look impressive) actually work in a real fight? I just watched a video of the world Naginata championships, and the two women taking part just... kind of stood there and appeared to rather awkwardly poke at each other, until someone scored a point. Nothing as graceful and fancy as this.

I am afraid you have to create time machine and go back to the era of samurai.

I would like to see this displayed in a more real world setting, becuz and not trying to start an argument this bow style does not look very effective to me, it looked as if the students where just acting and this bow movments where so slow I can not see it working in REAL life

to each their own, i see the naginata as a more (sorry if i am bad at describing this) nimble weapon, but i have always wanted to try some guan dao techniques with a naginata
