- Although there is lots of room for improvement this maiden went much better than expected. I thought surely that I botched something with the build or configuration that would keep me grounded.
I'm very impressed with what Tridge and team have done with the VTOL firmware. I'm going to work on making my elevons larger for better control and tuning PIDs. Then I'll work towards transitioning to forward flight and back to hover again.
Thanks for all of those that have been following along and offering suggestions. I hope to continue learning more about VTOL tailsitters.

Looking forward to the next video. I'd be glad to see it fly. Great job!
You and me both. It's going to be fun to get into forward flight! Thanks for watching.
I've been meaning to pick up a SweepWingRC aircraft.. thank you for the motivation! Congrats on the maiden.
Tom, you should definitely check them out. They are pretty indestructible. Thanks for the feedback and I've fallen in love with this VTOL platform. Hopefully forward flight goes well after some tuning and increasing the size of my elevons.
AWESOME DENNIS , keep up the good work!!!
Thank you, Aron.
ARDUPILOT FTW! Nicely done Dennis
FTW for sure! Thanks for following along.
Congratulation dennis, great work. This might be the next game changer in drone industry.
I love the platform and think you're right. I hope you're doing well.
Very nice :)
Congratulations, bring on the transition!
Hey Leonard, it's great to hear from you. I'm looking forward to the transition and will definitely be sharing my results. I still have all my notes from our Skype chat when you walked me through tuning :) Take care.
Amazing!! Can't wait for more. Great job!!
Thank you, Justing. Appreciate the good words.
Excellent 👌🏼 good job
Thank you. Appreciate you following along.
Nice!! Congrats man!
Thanks for following along.
Morning Dennis, well that was a success, well done fella! Matt
Matt, thank you for following along. Appreciate your good words.
GREAT JOB DENNIS!!!
Love watching your videos!!🖒🖒
Thank you for following along.
Dennis Baldwin we always love your content and hard work.
Here is a link to the type of UAV work I've been performing.

That is fascinating and such a great use of the technology! Great job and I'll be following your work.
Dennis Baldwin Thanks Denis, that mean a lot coming from you!! I really appreciate it!!
Can you make a video showing how to load firmware, setup channels, calibrations, etc. using Mission Planner. That would be awesome!
Dude!! It worked awesome man!
Thanks Ruben. Can't wait to get it into forward flight.
How has this been going? I'm looking at doing this as well.
Ale-er-Rons ( ale as in beer) pronounced. Great job on this project! Getting me thinking of the possibilities with sensors ~>would probably need to go larger scale but the joy of building vs buying a $50 k model gets one excited.
Looking forward to your future videos on this.
As always, thanks for sharing and keeping us excited about the possibilities of these and your other VTOLS.
Just so I'm clear here. Hopefully I didn't mispronounce anything in the video but the Flinch has elevons (elevator/aileron) to control both pitch and roll. Hope you're doing well and yes it would be awesome to do more with this platform. My goal is to do some mapping with it. Will keep you posted.
You made the sUAS NEWS!!! ~Perhaps it's on me. might need to update my vocab (aircraft structural mechanic background) !! Just learned something new.
No worries at all. We're all learning from each other. Do you have a link to the sUAS news article? I'd like to share it with a friend. Have a great weekend.

Gary Mortimer reports for sUAS News shares your success.
Have you seen the copter software conference? ua-cam.com/video/NZP4HO0kkFI/v-deo.html
Wow I was not expecting that to work so well especially with standard size ailerons...thats awesome. Will be interesting to see that in a bit of wind. Also as things progress with this format how a heavier wing with payload would handle...
Yeah I was impressed too, but there was zero wind. I am putting together a video on tuning and then will do forward flight. Yes and I definitely want to get payload in the Juggernaut, which is a step up from Flinch. Thanks for following along.
Really cool of you to share this stuff!
Quick question: are those elevons in their right positions? Looks like they'd fit the frame better if swapped.
well done!
Thanks. Have watched several of your builds over the past few weeks. I love what you're doing. I have zero design skills for building an airframe and have a huge appreciation for your designs. I'll definitely be following your work. If you have anything you're looking to sell or just get exposure for please feel free to send me something and I'll gladly review it on the channel. Keep up the great work!
Thanks, yes, the laser cutter is on the boat, maybe some adapter kits to upgrade to TVBS( twin vector belly sitter)
and also a controller naze/inav based, that's the one in illusion... ua-cam.com/video/koOqenMpvck/v-deo.html
simpler than Ardupilot but mainly for sport flying. but still in the works along with my learning Arduplane Q
Like what you do as well .. informative and easy to understand ...interesting
Great
Which fc did you use? Do you have any plans for the plane? It looks super cool!
Impressive first flight. Larger control surfaces will give you a bit more authority for yaw and pitch control, but I've found the configuration to have poor stability as soon as there is any wind (At least using the PX4 flight stack). I've yet to try the configuration Research Air pioneered with vectored thrust, but I think it's the future for practical dual motor setups.
thanks for the acknowledgment....
Thanks Guy. As you saw in the video there was zero wind, which was great for hover testing. I know I'll have much more trouble with these small elevons in windy conditions. My next steps are to tune and double the height of the elevons. Thanks for sharing and yes, Research Air is doing some awesome stuff with the vectored tailsitters!
yahhhhhh that's kool ;-)
Were you able to fix the oscillation
Does anyone know why my left propeller generates a thrust going up rather than down?
hey, I am also working on the tailsitter . but after arming the plane is not responding to the roll, pithch, yaw and throttle inputs from rc transmitter. please help me.
Awesome Dennis, Congratulations. I am also planning to build a tailsitter but I cant find any tutorial or guide for it. Do you have a link or info about it? Thank you in advance.
Hi Pablo, this is the best resource out there. Lots of great information: discuss.ardupilot.org/t/dual-motor-tailsitters/15302
Is this vtol mode available in mission planner
Wonderful work, how we can tune that copter mode plz guide
Sir got it answer from your tuning video. . . Thanks sir
No problem. Glad it helped.
Hi Dennis, I´m starting the wing vtol project. Can you give me an idea about fligth controller and where to find documentation? Thanks
I had to take a break from this project but the best resource I've found is discuss.ardupilot.org/t/dual-motor-tailsitters/15302 there's a lot of info in there and it will take some time to sift through it all. Good luck and please keep us posted on your progress.
Hi dennis really amazing build. I built a similar one too. But m have a problem. When i hover in Qstabilize mode, when i increase the throttle and it reaches to approx 4m alt it automatically changes to forward flight. I m not sure why. M using a radiolink minipix. Flightmodes m using is qstabilize, fbwa and qrtl. Can you please help.
Hey, I am going to build one of these as well. Would you mind sharing some of the parts you used? Motors/frame/props/esc's? This would help a ton, thanks.
@@randomodbuild hi. The frame i used is designed by flite test. An FT Spear. U can use any Motors and esc as long as they are 4s capable and the props m using are 8inch apc. Flight controller is a radiolink minipix.
Hi Dennis. Can you kindly supply the model number for the motor and what ESC your using. Is the Flinch a symmetric wing?
Hi! Here are the motors:
www.getfpv.com/fx2216-9-1100kv-v2.html
I pulled them off a quad build. I'm not certain if these will be what I settle on, but they are great little motors for my experimentation. I'm flying 8" props. These are the ESCs:
www.getfpv.com/lumenier-30a-blheli-esc-2-4s.html
Regarding your question about symmetric are you referring to the airfoil or something else? Good luck with your build.
Thanks - that's what I thought. Best to be sure.
Hi Dennis! Can you help me about fixing PIXhawk autopilot for FLYsky 9X radio control? also long time ago you have showed how it does it fix in the APM board. Pixhawk use only ppm to receiver. For that reason I can not do like APM 2.8 fly modes. Do you have any file in which show how can setup the FLY Sky 9x Radio Control fly modes? look forward from you regards!
I'm sorry, but I don't have any experience with the FLY Sky but have heard that it's fairly similar to Turnigy 9X. Maybe this will help:
ua-cam.com/video/6n_5wNA2jTI/v-deo.html
Good luck!
Congratulation
I'm surprised about the stability with this small elevons.
Thanks Otto. Definitely not much wind. I think it would have been a problem with more wind so I plan on increasing the size of the elevons.
Can you share the parameters
i need this too
